Boxing champ knifed in road rage incident SPAIN’S 1997 featherweight boxing champion says he feels ‘lucky to be alive’. Francisco Javier Gual was allegedly stabbed by a neighbour during a road rage incident in Palma. He was parking his car at the Rafal

community parking on Calle Cirere, and almost crashed into the alleged assailant’s vehicle. Leaving his wife and 17-month-old son in the car, Francisco got out and the two men started to argue. “When they started to shout at each

other I asked them to shut up, because my son was sleeping in my arms,” his wife said. “I grabbed hold of Francisco and pulled him away to put an end to the fight.” The assailant’s wrath seemed to be provoked

when Francisco walked away after supposedly saying: “I don’t want to argue with old men,” he told a Spanish daily from his Son Espases hospital bed. “I saw that he was going to stab me so I crouched down. I then felt a sharp pain in my heart. I thought I was going to die and even said goodbye to my wife,” Francisco recalled. The 37-year-old is receiving treatment at the hospital for a punctured lung and a fractured rib. When arrested, Jesus RC admitted stabbing Francisco with a small knife carried on a keyring but claims it was after being threatened and struck by the boxer with a set of keys. The boxer’s wife said: “The police have told me they are going to release him and that these incidents don’t go very far. But we see each other in the parking lot frequently and I fear he might do something similar. “I am going to ask for a restraining order,” she added.

CUCUMBER sales in Mallorca have dropped by 80 per cent, according to Union de Pagesos. Mercapalma calculates the fall in sales to be a more moderate 30 to 40 per cent. This follows the E.coli outbreak scare in Hamburg (Germany) which has decimated Spanish fruit and vegetable exports. Pagesos calculates weekly lost revenues of approximately €200 million a week nationally. German authorities initially pointed to organic cucumbers imported from Almeria and Malaga. Shortly after Spain was ‘cleared’ on Tuesday government demanded the European Union compensate Spanish farmers for the millions of euros lost since the outbreak began. In the five days that followed the outbreak, widespread media reports of ‘killer Spanish cucumbers’ saw orders throughout the province, and elsewhere in Andalucia cancelled. Countries which removed Spanish-grown cucumbers from sale included Germany, Russia, France, Belgium, and Holland, among others. Even after Hamburg’s Health Minister Cornelia Prüfer-Storcks on Tuesday revealed analysis of the cucumbers in question revealed these were not the cause of the outbreak, news continued to appear on the internet to suggest the contrary. According to the manager of a fruit cooperative based in Andalucia blaming Spain for the outbreak was “very strange given nobody here is infected.” “People have no idea the damage this has done to us. It is not just a financial matter, given seeing your whole life collapse in 24 hours and 15 years of work go down the drain,” he added.

By M Mynor TWITTER is close to acquiring London-based startup TweetDeck in a $40m (€28m) deal, making the company’s founder Iain Dodsworth a multimillionaire. The microblogging website has finalised a cash and shares deal with Dodsworth, which is expected to be officially confirmed today, according to media reports. Twitter has remained quiet on the speculation, which first emerged last month, and issued a statement saying that it will ‘continue to not comment on rumours.’ TweetDeck’s software enables users to organise their various Twitter accounts from a single launchpad, while also integrating data from other social networks including Facebook. Dodsworth, a programmer who has worked at the Prudential and PricewaterhouseCoopers, founded TweetDeck in 2008 after becoming frustrated at missing messages from friends. The company employs 15 staff and is based in the Old Street area of London, dubbed the ‘Silicon Roundabout’ due to the large amount of technology startups. Despite TweetDeck failing to ever turn a profit, the company has received the support of many high profile Twitter users, such as Stephen Fry and Ashton Kutcher. Twitter’s interest in TweetDeck accelerated after reports emerged that internet entrepreneur Bill Gross’s UberMedia company had submitted a $30m (€21m) offer.

www.euroweeklynews.com Tax inspectors take more tax out of the rich HM Revenue & Customs set up its High Net Worth Unit in 2009 specifically to investigate the tax affairs of the UK’s wealthiest citizens. So far it is proving a great success for the Treasury. The High Net Worth Unit replaced the Complex Personal Tax Team which used to bring in £25 million annually. In its first year the new unit managed to net £86 million. According to reports it has now almost doubled this achievement, generating £162 million extra revenue for the 2010-11 tax year. This is on top of the tax already paid by the individuals concerned. Treasury Minister, David Gauke, commented: “These are economically challenging times and it is absolutely essential and only fair that everyone pays their share of tax.” The Treasury acknowledges that high net worth individuals tend to have complicated tax affairs, but says this complexity should not prevent accuracy, and that the “very rich” must “pay the tax the law says they should”. The Unit works with representatives of the individuals to ensure tax rules are applied correctly. The extra tax becomes due when rules have been misunderstood or incorrectly applied to the taxpayer’s particular circumstances. If the Unit finds evidence of tax evasion the matter is referred to another HMRC unit. This is an example of why it is important to get your tax

planning right from the outset so that you do not end up with an unexpected tax bill. Switzerland Some taxpayers could also find themselves paying more tax when the agreement between the UK and Switzerland is finalised and launched. According to all reports, under the agreement Swiss financial institutions will start to deduct a withholding tax from interest earnings, dividends and capital gains earned by British taxpayers. The tax collected will be anonymously remitted to HMRC. The Treasury expects to earn £3 billion in extra income over the next four years from the agreement. While the withholding tax was initially expected to be between 25% and 35%, the Financial Times has since reported that, according to a source familiar with the investigations, it will

actually be 50%. The actual amount still needs to be officially announced, however. Also as part of the deal, investors will also pay a one-off levy in recognition of past unpaid tax. The announcement on the final deal is expected soon. The talks between the UK and Switzerland were held against a backdrop of changing tax transparency standards. The conclusion is anticipated to set a new precedent in tax information exchange and for the Swiss banking industry. The UK is not the only country negotiating with Switzerland. Germany has already started discussions on a similar agreement and France and Italy are expected to initiate similar talks in the near future. A similar deal with the US has also been suggested, with Switzerland’s Finance Minister saying that a withholding tax would be the “right instrument” to resolve remaining tax issues with the US. HMRC’s latest initiative HMRC has set up a new task force, with specialist teams to “undertake intensive bursts of compliance activity in specific

high risk trade sectors and locations across the UK”. This initiative is part of the £900 million allocated in the government’s October Spending Review to claw back around £7 billion lost to tax evasion annually by 2014/15. The restaurant trade is the first to be targeted. The first task force will be deployed in London, but will later cover the North West and Scotland. There will be another nine task forces over the next year, followed by more in 2012/13. Mike Eland, Director General Enforcement and Compliance, said: “The message is clear – if you deliberately seek to evade tax HMRC can and will track you down, and you’ll face not only a heavy fine, but possibly a criminal prosecution as well.” Over the past year HMRC’s increased targeting of tax evasion and avoidance has brought the Exchequer an additional £8.5 billion of tax revenue, nearly 50% more than the total for the previous three years. It is aiming to undertake 1,000 criminal prosecutions a year. New penalty regime The start of the tax year in April introduced a new penalty regime

for people found to have evaded tax. The amount depends on which jurisdiction the undisclosed assets were held in. For tax evasion within the UK and countries which automatically exchange information with the UK - up to 100% of the tax owed. For countries which exchange information on request – up to 150%. Other countries – up to 200%. Commenting on the changes, David Gauke, Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, said: “The time is running out for anyone going offshore to evade tax. Get your tax affairs in order, or face the risk of a penalty worth up to 200% of the tax evaded.” Wherever you live, be it the UK or here in Spain, it is important to make sure you get your tax planning right so that you do not have to face the consequences later. Get by with help from your friends HAVE you ever considered how paying off debt is a bit like dieting? It all starts off with the best of intentions, but once nobody is looking you’ve got your face stuck in the fridge, taking large and cheeky bites out of a chocolate tart. Weight-loss experts are always harping on about how support groups are essential to starting and sticking to a diet. Apparently, succeeding in shedding the pounds is not only reliant on yourself, but on a whole host of other people, too. Which is why WeightWatchers is such a success. The concept of the group is to band together, support each other and most importantly communicate how much weight is being lost. It seems the very idea of having to confront other

Loose change A look at finance for females Jane Plunkett jane.plunkett@euroweeklynews.com

people with the number of kilos being shed gives even the most slack of dieters motivation. Conclusion – it’s much easier to lose weight when you have a support network – so why should paying off debt be any different? In America, the latest trend in the financial world is a debt support group. And, goodness knows, thanks to the recession, there are enough financially crippled people in the

States to utilise them. One such support group is called DebtGoal – an organisation that looks at your debt, monthly income, spending habits, and specific personal challenges. Like WeightWatchers, DebtGoal gives you financial ‘exercises’ each month. A homegrown solution to this type of organisation would be to team up with some close friends and family and start your own ‘DebtGoal’ support group. Lay all your debts on the table, then arrange to meet your ‘DebtGoal’ buddies twice a week and analyse each other’s progress. A supportive shoulder and some preying eyes over your accounts could be all that’s needed to whip any financial mess into order.

Good client relationships are key MY father used to say that he closed more business on the golf course than in the office. I am not suggesting everyone go out and learn how to play golf, but the sentiment is to build a relationship with the client. Often when you wish to have a new customer or keep existing ones, the initial reaction is to give them a discount on the price of the product or service to close the sale. In the long-run, this may not be the best tactic.

B

est Practice

With Stephen Boss

www.sgbconsultingspain.com

The most important reasons not to apply this strategy are that it suggests the initial price was too high, and there is now a relationship based on price not trust. Business is more than just selling stuff. It is the relationship

you build with the client. A client might be willing to pay more for a product or service for a longer period of time if they like and trust the person proving it.

Are they married? Have children? Do their children like football? Buy tickets if you can. The initial cost dwarfs the longterm benefits.

Show you care In this age of email, the personal touch is often lost. With social networking it is very easy to find out when is their birthday and other personal details, or simply ask them and send a card; yes, use the post office not a virtual card.

Price of loyalty If unsure of a customer’s loyalty, ask them to fill out a questionnaire with a benefit attached such as the possibility of a plane ticket or free dinner. It is better to know where one stands than wonder and be surprised at the end of the day.

Have male entrepreneurs become too complacent?

IT seems the power behind the throne has come out of hiding. Female chief executive officers in Spain are on the increase. At a 10 per cent presence, there is still some way to go, but the gap is narrowing. Discount supermarket chain DIA is set to have as its president Ana Maria Llopis; it will be the biggest Spanish company run by a woman. A phenomenon not yet recognised is the huge potential shown by businesswomen. Men are being sharp-elbowed aside by female dynamos. This is not confined to the upper echelons of corporate power, it is self-evident across Spain’s Mediterranean business communities. I noticed the female assault on traditional maledominated business bastions when attending networking events in the UK. It was not unusual to find many of those attending were women; mostly self-employed entrepreneurs. Noteworthy was their enthusiasm and almost evangelical selfbelief. Whereas the men tended to be laid-back, their female counterparts

I

n my view

with

Paul Polke were wearing their business not just talking it. As business assessor for Britain’s leading quality assurance trade association,

Female CEOs in Spain are on the increase. I was in no doubt as to women’s important role in business. Most of the companies I visited were headed by a male boss who looked after the trade. It was the woman who took care of the sharp end by providing the skills of financial management, marketing and risk-taking. To my knowledge there are no business groups exclusive to male membership. I have no doubt that any suggestion that one be formed would be dismissed as ludicrous. On the other hand, women’s business networking groups are plentiful. They are vibrant, inter-active and their members are up for any

challenge. One can only marvel at their passion. What has brought about the change? Are women in business more driven than men; have male entrepreneurs become complacent? Alison Meehan of networking group Costa Women, says: “Over my 30 year working lifetime, the stereotypical view of women has changed dramatically. Successful women in business are no longer the exception, they are the norm. “Women traditionally created and led social and supportive networks. With the arrival of the internet this ability moved into the social media/social

business sphere. Information Beautiful report reveals Twitter and Facebook have 57 per cent women users. Morgan Stanley say the fastest growing demographic group on Facebook is women aged 55 and older; up 175 per cent since September 2008.” Karen Love, VicePresident of Company Women, Costa Blanca, has a UK banking background where the men are entrenched. She says: “They can be difficult to edge aside. Here on the Costas the glass ceiling hardly exists. This gives businessminded women more free rein and they make the most of it.” Karla Darocas, artist, educator, entrepreneur and founder of Women in Business Club (WIBC), now retired as president but still a member, is in general agreement: “When I moved to the Costa Blanca in 2000 there were no women’s business clubs. I found that shocking. I set up WIBC so that I could make contacts, find clients, and educate women about business and cybernetics. “I know from experience that women are natural at being entrepreneurs. For thousands of years women ran the household, which is basically a family business. Women are creative, they take risks, they communicate with great skill, and they balance budgets and many other things that are the foundations of entrepreneurialism,” she added.

Obsessed with cookery shows IS it not ironic that when two thirds of the world is on the breadline, the West, particularly the Brits, are obsessed with cookery programmes? These days you simply can’t tune in to the box without eyeing a variety of individuals endeavouring to disguise some lump of flesh or another. Celebrities, glamorous gourmets, hairy Hells Angels, foulmouthed oafs... There is no escape. As the cook in my family (especially since the wife walked out) all I need in the kitchen are reasonably priced recipes, with plenty of nutrition that keep the interest of the kids, month in and

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT month out. I’m afraid Vietnamesestyle Prawns with Hearts of Palm and Green Tea Noodle Salad, doesn’t quite hack it. Another TV offering I have followed with some amusement over the past couple of years has been the ads for Qatar Airways, which sponsor Sky News. The correct pronunciation for Qatar rhymes with catarrh.

DEPÓSITO COMPROMISO. RELIABILITY AND PROFITABILITY, HAND IN HAND.

Obviously the hierarchy of Sky decided that to pronounce it in this way could be considered somewhat unsavoury. The results have been quite hilarious. It would be impossible to print the different pronunciations they have tried out over the years. I can’t resist one more moan. Why do we still grovel to the Americans? To me both the Obamas displayed a condescending attitude towards their British hosts last week. Michelle’s speech to the schoolchildren I found particularly patronising. When are the British going to realise that as far as the

Americans are concerned we are nothing more than a funny little quirky island, full of people forever grateful to them for saving us in the Second World War? Even that is a fallacy. The Americans finally joined in that war only when they realised that if Hitler was victorious in Europe they would be his next target. Meanwhile, if there are any selfsufficient, unattached ladies out there, interested in an aging unattached pop singer, I’m all ears. Have a good week. And, whatever ya do, always keep the faith. DRIVING from Almeria to Mojacar on the motorway recently, the rear nearside tyre punctured. I stopped the car on the hard shoulder. Being in my 80s and not having changed a wheel for many years, I considered the situation. What happened next was remarkable. Within a minute or two a car pulled up on the hard shoulder just ahead of me and a young Spaniard wearing a suit and tie came to assess the problem. He immediately set to, loosening the wheel nuts, jacking up the car and fitting the spare tyre. As he waved goodbye, I slipped a €50 note into his shirt pocket. With a shake of the head and a charming smile he removed the note, dropped it on the driver’s seat of my car and was gone. Aren’t guardian angels wonderful? John van Dijk, Mojacar

Would-be voters WE did try to vote in the local elections, but were instead led on a ‘car treasure hunt’, never finding our allotted polling station in an obscurely named local school. First we went to the school where we voted four years ago, but that had been pulled down. After a discussion with several other would-be voters we decided

I FOUND the article ‘On yer bike and watch your savings grow’ ( Jane Plunkett, Finance Issue 1350 ) interesting and factual. My wife bought me a mountain bike on my 64th birthday, and I have spent the last two summers increasingly enjoying setting out on short shopping trips on two wheels, rather than four. WALKING along the Paseo Maritimo in Fuengirola, I came across a group of people lighting Chinese lanterns. When I asked why, I was told that they - the Socialist party - were doing this in lieu of their end-of-campaign party, which the Popular Party had obstructed. It was touching to see everyone participating in such a symbolic act.

Wrong again. We were directed to various other locations, each time it was not the right place. On our forms it said Urb Torreta 111, Patricias. In the end we drove home, despondent and fed-up. Matthews’, (EWN Sports Writer) list. In the first of his twopart exclusive on Lionel Messi, I was rather surprised that he did not have the good grace to give a mention to another great footballer, Sir Stanley Matthews. In his day, Sir Stanley was another great crowd puller and always ‘a gentleman’, both in and out of the game. As of many, in those years gone by, he played football for the honour and pleasure of being lucky enough to be selected, and for whatever small income the clubs could afford. Go on, Tony, be gallant in your second-part and apologise for the oversight. Raymond Hull, by email

Tony Matthews reply: I personally did not compare Messi with other greats; pundits on TV/radio, magazines and other newspapers did that. I compare Messi with my namesake, Sir Stan, Finney, Edwards, Bobby Charlton and Cruyff. If Messi had been playing in the 1908s, I do not think he would be the player he is today.

Hats off THANK YOU for the excellent write-up of our concert ( Costa Blanca North, Issue 1350). What it does not tell is of the stunning

contribution, the effort and courage of Pat Pyne. Deprived of leader Jo Baldwin, she was thrown in the deep end and rose to the occasion, putting aside her own health problems. Not only did she save the day, she made it. Coral Clasica Javiense founder

I HAD my wallet lifted at Puerto Pollenca market recently. When I went to the police station, which is as big as Manchester City Hall, they did not want to know unless I had an interpreter. Seeing there appeared to be more police than we have troops in Afghanistan, no wonder Spain will probably be next for a bail-out. Arthur Arnold, Puerto Pollenca

Up in smoke REGARDING Mr Kennedy’s letter (Issue 1351) on the subject of smokers, he cannot have it both ways. He has been quite happy all winter for smokers to be banished to the outside terraces, but now that the sun is out he wants the terrace for himself. Sorry, chum, that is just tough. But, he does have the freedom of choice. There are bars whose owners ban smoking even on the terrace, so if he objects that much he should find one of them. Live and let live. Andrew Coates, Fuengirola Editor’s note: Andrew is just one of many readers who wrote in with similar sentiments.

Just a name! THE article ‘What’s in a name?’ (Issue 1351) was very readable. It also reminded me of how politically correct the world has become in recent years. Forty years ago, my sister married a man known since schooldays as Dick, a favoured short-form for many christened Richard. About five years ago – by now a pensioner – an instruction went out to all that he wanted everyone to call him Richard as his grandchildren had enquired why he had such a dirty name. Although Richard is now known as Richard by the majority, just occasionally a reference to Dick slips into conversation. Ooooops! R Major Aguilas

Time Out

A love triangle with an elephant in the room

Weather today 19 - 13

BASED on Sara Gruen’s acclaimed bestseller, ‘Water for Elephants’ the film is the story of an unexpected romance in a uniquely compelling setting. During the Great Depression, Jacob, a penniless and recentlyorphaned veterinary school student, parlays his expertise with animals into a job with a secondrate travelling circus. He meets and falls in love with Marlena, one of the show’s star performers, but their romance is GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) This is your week to sparkle and show how clever you are. Why be modest? Let others know what you are capable of; your talents will come out sooner or later. Don't be embarrassed when paid a compliment, for it is richly deserved. You have put on a jolly good show of late and it is now time to listen to the applause.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Something that you had set your heart on, although still coming, is terribly slow. This is not a time to be a pessimist. Please don't, however, allow your tendency to put all your eggs in one basket trip you up. It is not necessary to go about things the way that you normally do. Remember that variety is the spice of life. LEO (July 24 - August 23) You are moving on in an important area but do not burn bridges before you have others to cross. You will know why I mention this later in the week. You are able to influence others far more than you realise, but with your wish to keep things on an even keel you may be giving away too much. You need to keep a balance.

FILMS complicated by Marlena’s husband, the charismatic but unbalanced circus boss. They discover beauty amidst the world of the Big Top and come together through the compassion they feel for a special

Y our S tars

elephant named Rosie, the circus’s main attraction. In this film adaptation, not only does Jacob (Robert Pattinson) have little or none of the mystical connection he shares with Rosie in the novel, but also there is a lack of chemistry with Reese Witherspoon, who plays Marlena, which makes it very hard to believe that the two have found

an undying love despite everything they have against them. Luckily, Christoph Waltz, as Marlena’s husband, brings a little fire to the movie, but the production focuses more on the love triangle between the three characters than it does on portraying what life with a circus was like in that era, and the special connections which can be made between humans and animals.

Rafael Nadal,

Born June 3, 1986, Rafa Nadal is a Spanish tennis player. His took part in his first official competition when he was just nine years old and won. He later became the youngest player in history to win an ATP match at the age of 15. At 24 he became the youngest player to get the Career Golden Slam (four Grand Slam tournaments and n Olympic Gold medal).

VIRGO (August 24 - September 23)

Is there a chance that you are burying your head in the sand? It is likely that something happening right in front of you is being overlooked or ignored. You are able to deal with this more easily than you think. Just take one step at a time and stick to your plan. Simply telling someone what to do instead of asking them to do it can work wonders.

LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) This is not a time to take anyone for granted. At this time of the year people tend to look at their situation and ask if they are getting

enough out of it. Neglecting someone now could store up a lot of problems for the future. Avoid doing anything that could lead to you being blamed later.

SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) Now is your chance to go straight for what you want. The shock of having this opportunity could cause you to hesitate. Do bear in mind, though, that he who hesitates is often lost. The temptation to keep something for yourself is not selfish but sensible. You may not have the chance again in the near future.

SU DOKU

IF ITʼS YOUR BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK: There are few areas where you can go badly wrong for the rest of this year. Finance is one of them and it is important to keep tabs on your spending. The second is love.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) A big change means big chances, so don't let small things get you down. In the past six months you have come a long way. You are not back where you started. You are being given the chance to start again, but this time you have far more experience..

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Challenges that do not please you are inevitable. That does not mean that your attitude towards them could not change. Indeed, unless you want to continue to be upset, it must. Luckily, you have mostly had your own way recently. Try to be a good loser when you have to accept second best.

AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) You have a chance to give someone great delight, so why not go ahead? Your insecure side tells you that it is too good to be true and there must be a catch. Why should there be? This is a situation that you may relax into as only you know how.

HOW TO PLAY Fill the grid so that every row, every column and every 3X3 box contains the digits 1-9. There’s no maths involved. You solve the puzzle with reasoning and logic.

PISCES (Febraury 20 - March 20) Don't look for spooks in the closet when there are none. Not only does it look silly but it wastes good time. Basing your actions on past disappointments can only lead to more of the same. Show confidence in others and they will show it in you. Sometimes, your patience wears thin but it is in your best interests to remain calm.

ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Is someone that you are closely involved with trying to drive a hard bargain? Are you surprised at the amount of time and energy that they are throwing at it? It could be that they are more passionate about it than you realised.

TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) You have been learning about certain people very fast. Do you feel as though you are in the middle of a soap opera? With the summer sun high, it is possible that passions will fire up. Everything seems to revolve round one person and it is upsetting everything else. Try to spend more time with people who have a warmth and generosity about them.

Mallorca Rocks Hotel ready to rock and roll THE Mallorca Rocks Hotel in Magaluf has been receiving a lot of coverage in the press recently over licencing. The Spanish press said that the licence last year was for an ‘extraordinary concert’, but that since this year the concerts are on a more regular bases a ‘permanent’ licence is required. “There has been both positive and negative press about Mallorca Rocks,” Mallorca Rocks CEO Andrew Clemence told EWN. “The facts are that all the events last year were fully licensed and operated within local laws. “We were told that this year if we wanted to go ahead with the concerts on a weekly basis that we

guests spend money outside of the hotel on other nights,” said Mr Clemence. “Generally the local people are supportive of our venture and most of the local bars and restaurants appreciate the business that comes from our guests.” This is not the case with everybody. “There are one or two detractors who do not welcome any

competition and are kicking up a fuss.” “Although we have been operating in Ibiza for many years, this is a new concept for Mallorca. We had our first event Tuesday night and that was done in full compliance with local legislation and we did not have any problems, and will be going ahead as planned with the rest of the summer’s concerts,” said Mallorca Rocks CEO.

Slipped disc: Tips to prevent and ease symptoms A DISC is the cushion between the bones in your spine, a cartilage pad with a jelly like centre. This disc has three main jobs: • To create a space between the bones of your spine. • Acts as a shock absorber from movement. • To allow movement of the spine; tilting, bending and twisting. Whilst technically a disc cannot ‘slip’ this is the term often used when the jelly centre of the disc is compromised and starts to affect the cartilage rings that surround it. At its most extreme, the jelly breaks through all the cartilage rings and ‘slips’ or leaks out. However, it is more common that the jelly becomes distorted rather

then rupturing completely and applies pressure to the cartilage rings and to the nerves around it. Slipped or herniated discs are usually caused by sudden extreme changes in activity: for instance lifting heavy objects. Or they can be caused by prolonged and unbalanced pressure on the spine caused by poor posture. When such an event happens, back muscles lock up to try and prevent movement. It is quite common to feel pain into the legs as the disc becomes inflamed and applies pressure to the nerves (sciatic) that run through the spine and down the legs. Many people think that you become more vulnerable to slipped discs as you age, however, you are actually more prone to them when you are younger as there is more jelly inside the cartilage ring. As we get older the disc becomes drier and flatter and we are more likely to lock up due to a loss of ‘bounce’ rather then damage to the jelly of the disc. What to do: REST: You need to lie still while the body adjusts. ICE: The disc and the muscles will become inflamed so apply an ice pack wrapped in a damp tea towel for up to 10 minutes every half hour to reduce inflammation and help with the pain. If, after 48 hours you are still struggling then you must seek professional help. If you are a regular sufferer of back pain there are things that can help. For example, Magnetic

A ‘slipped’ disc can also cause sciatica. Resonance Therapy, can help strengthen the jelly making it less likely to ‘slip’ under pressure. It hardens the cartilage allowing it to do its shock absorbing job. Also computerised prescriptive orthotics can help by preventing you ‘walking in’ or even developing a problem in the first place. These insoles have been described as ‘therapy in motion’. Also consider pilates. Your back muscles are for movement not stability, and by strengthening your core internal abdomen muscles, your back is under less strain and you run a lower

risk of injury. If you have any questions, call Estelle Mitchell at The Bodyworks Health Clinic on 952 883 151. www.TheBodyworksClinic. com

Keeping children busy I can’t decide which is annoying me more... The fact that our streets are still lined with political propaganda posters almost two weeks after the election, or the fact that we have less than a month to go before school ends and the seemingly never ending summer holidays begin. On the one hand, it would be great to think that the newly elected politicians are all busily getting down to their new jobs with extra gusto, but on the other, I know that none of them actually take office until the middle of June. So whose responsibility is it to take down all of these posters that were so eagerly and obsessively put up in the middle of the night (waking up my sleeping child in the process). Nobody seems to know, or care. At least in my little borough of Andratx the streets are tidy, but drive through Santa Ponsa or Portals and the many and varied faces of wannabe mayors are still gurning at us. I am sure our VIVs (Very Important Visitors, aka our tourists) are fascinated to see the litter and shredded, sun bleached photos instead of taking in the view of the beach. It’s so nice to see that our environment really matters to the people in charge.

Streets lined with posters.

Family Matters By Vicki Mcleod

Although, here’s a thought, why not hang on until the middle of June when all of our school children won’t have a thing to do for three months. Perhaps we can organise a clean up campaign to keep the kids busy

whilst we all work the hardest we possibly can to try to make the 2011 season a success. Isn’t it mad? Not only does Mallorca rely on tourism for 80 per cent of its income but it makes it almost impossible to have kids and work in the busiest months of the year. Ah, yes, summer school. So that will be another expense, and one that I can’t claim for in my autonomo expenses. Negotiate with the teachers’ union, make the holidays shorter, get air con for the classrooms, or make it easier for small business owners and employers to help their employees get through the crucial months when we can all hope to put some cash in the bank. And get the bin men to go out around the streets and take down the hundreds, possibly thousands of those signs. I am a bit fed up with the ‘hey, that’s the way it is in Mallorca’ answer, accompanied with a heavy shrug of the shoulders. I hope the new administration hits the ground running, with a pair of sharp scissors and a great idea what to do with a five-year-old for three months. It could be as easy as child’s play, if they want.

Sebastian Vettel wins the Monaco Grand Prix for Red Bull.

Gamble pays off

SEBASTIAN VETTEL won his fifth race of the season in Monaco, after taking a gamble and running 56 of the race’s 78 laps on the same set of harder compound tyres.

Holding off Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button in a tight finish around the streets of Monte Carlo, Vettel held firm for his first win in the principality.

SPANISH cyclist Alberto Contador has his sights set on winning a fourth Tour de France title. This would see him equal with Lance Armstrong for Grand Tour victories. Despite having an alleged illegal drug hearing hanging over him, the Spaniard won the Giro d’Italia for the second time last weekend, finishing six minutes and 10 seconds ahead of Italian rider Michele Scarponi. Holding the leader’s jersey for 13 days of this year’s tour, Contador bagged

two stage wins on his way to victory. The first was on the ninth stage on the slopes of Mount Etna. From that point on he took charge of the race. He celebrated Sunday’s win in traditional style by beating his chest and firing a pistol shot into the air as he crossed the line. “It is an amazing feeling to win the Giro here today and it is a dream finale,” the Madrid-born rider said. “My team was really supportive throughout and we didn’t really have a bad day,” he added.

Luke Donald becomes world’s number one golfer after winning the PGA BRITISH golfer Luke Donald has overtaken his fellow countryman and Ryder Cup team-mate Lee Westwood to become the world’s number one golfer. The 33-year-old won at the first play-off hole to win the PGA

Championship at Wentworth, climbing one spot to the top of the rankings. Shooting a final round of 70 to Westwood’s 68 to tie on six under, Westwood then found the water in front of the 18th green, handing

Donald the win. Donald said afterwards: “It’s something I’ll be very proud of. Obviously, there’s a lot of work still to do and hopefully there’ll be much more to come, but I’ll savour this.

“It’s a lot of responsibility and I’m looking forward to the challenge of being number one and hopefully I can hold on to it for a few more weeks. “I know Lee and Martin (Kaymer) will be chasing me hard.”
