Student Groups Guide 2019/20
Get involved, meet people, discover new interests!
Societies What is a Society
A Society is a group or club created by students, which brings people together, usually around a common interest or activity.
Societies are a big part of the student experience and can be a great way to enhance your social and academic life. The Students’ Association supports over 300 Societies, so there’s tons to choose from! Some Societies support charities and social causes; others serve academic purposes, while a few even function as businesses!
How to join a Society The Students’ Association holds Fairs throughout the year, including the Activities Fair during Welcome Week, where you can come along, meet current Society members, and get your questions answered. Each Society has guidelines for how to become a member – some charge a small fee for membership, others are free; some are open to non-students, others are not. See the full list of Societies and sign up online at eusa.ed.ac.uk/societies
Sports Clubs What is a Sports Club A Sports Club is a group of people formed for the purpose of playing a specific sport. The Sports Union supports 65 different Sports Clubs ranging from American Football to Windsurfing, and from Archery to Weightlifting. There is no requirement to have played or competed previously – anyone can play any sport, with inclusivity at the heart of the Sports Clubs’ offering.
How to join a Sports Club You can try all Sports Clubs for free before you join. The best way to meet Clubs is to visit the Sport & Fitness Fair during Welcome Week. Alternatively, visit eusu.ed.ac.uk/clubs for a list of all Sports Clubs. If you have questions about trying the sport, training sessions, or the wider Club offering, simply email the Club Committee. It’s recommended to speak to the Committee of the Sports Club you are looking to join before purchasing a membership. To become a Club member you must purchase a Sports Union and Club membership online, as well as a Sport & Exercise membership for Sports that use the University’s facilities.

Peer Learning & Support
Liberation Campaigns
The transition to University is full of new experiences, including coming to grips with a new academic environment and settling into student life. Peer Learning & Support allows you to learn from fellow students who have been where you are now! From joining Peer Assisted Learning Schemes (PALS) to help you with your studies, to attending Peer Support socials and wellbeing activities, there’s lots to choose from.
Our five Liberation Campaigns provide a space where Black and Minority Ethnic (BME), disabled, LGBT+, trans and non-binary, and women students can come together, discuss their experiences, and campaign for a more inclusive and equal University and society. Get involved by joining our online communities or coming along to our events, and if you have any questions, get in touch with the elected Officers who lead each Campaign.
