We’ve made sure to programme a wide variety of events, so that no matter how you get your kicks we’ve got events that will suit you. From the infamous freshers’ week club nights in Potterrow to relaxing coffee crawls and opportunities to get involved in sports teams and societies; you’re going to have a busy week. Take the opportunity of freshers’ week to really explore your Union buildings. Teviot is the oldest purpose built student union building in the world, but you would never expect it! If you’re the more active type we’ve just redeveloped Potterrow, home to one of the biggest clubs in Edinburgh and open every night of freshers’ week. Don’t worry if you study down in King’s Buildings, we’ve got a great student union down there for you to discover too including a whole gym in KB House. Hopefully I’ll see you around. Enjoy your freshers’ week and good luck with your studies! Max Vice President Services
My name is Robert T. Moose and I’m a third year at Edinburgh Uni. Two years ago I had a cracking freshers’ week and this year I’m really excited to be a freshers’ volunteer! I’ll be around all week; if you see me please come and give me a hug, we’ll be getting loads of pictures up on Facebook and you can also collect ‘Moosa dollars’ from me and my pals, which you can spend at the freshers’ auction on Friday 14th. Watch out at The Big Cheese – as you can see from my Facebook profile one of my favourite things is dancing. I’m on twitter too @robertthemoose so follow me for all the freshers’ week fun!

The freshers’ week pass is only £35 for free entry to all events for the whole week, will save you ever having to pay on the door and get you quicker entry into events. Welcome to Freshers Week
Union Bars, Cafés, Shops and Coffee Houses With four great union buildings, there’s always somewhere to go to eat and study, or drink and be merry.
Potterrow
Teviot Row House
Potterrow’s all new tree-filled dome is a now a stunning place to eat, meet and study.
Built over 120 years ago, Teviot House is the oldest purpose built student union building in the world and the heart of student life in Edinburgh. Hosting a number of unique bars and cafés, Teviot is also home to an impressive formal Dining Room, a huge Debating Hall, The Underground nightclub, and many excellent meeting rooms, all in one of the most stunning and imposing buildings in Edinburgh.
With The Dome Café serving fresh hot meals every lunchtime plus great coffee, sandwiches and irresistible cakes, there’s nowhere better to eat under the clear blue skies of Edinburgh, or to shelter from the occasional rain cloud. The brand new Potter Shop now offers grab and go fresh food and a wide choice of great value Co-op products to stock up your own kitchens. Also new for 2012 is Potter Coffee, a street fronted take away coffee shop for those in a hurry to get to lectures, and our all new Box office and Reception area where you can buy your tickets for any of our live events. Up one floor and you’ll find The Venue, our huge club and live music venue, which hosts fantastic live acts, our unique big Sports Club and Society night every Wednesday, and the cheesiest party in town, the Big Cheese, every Saturday night.
The New Amphion, is a wonderful classic coffee bar, café, wine bar and restaurant in the middle of Teviot House. The Library Bar, the most popular bar in any of our Unions, is full of incredible character. It is an essential part of any student night out, with great drinks at unbeatable student prices. For a more relaxed atmosphere, settle into one of the comfortable leather armchairs in Teviot Lounge; chat with friends, play cards, read, or just ponder the world passing by listening to live Jazz. With regular live acoustic music nights (Jazz & Folk) this is a great lounge bar for more relaxed socialising in the evenings or study during the day. Head to Teviot’s best kept secret, The Loft Bar, for a rooftop drink with an impressive range of cocktails. As the name suggests, this gem is tucked away at the top of one of Teviot’s turrets.

For big screen sports in a great atmosphere, The Sports Bar in Teviot shows all major sporting events. The Underground has undergone makeover for 2012, with a great new look and new programme. For a more alternative nightclub scene, and live music this could be the venue for you.
The Pleasance Hosting one of the most famous venues in the Fringe, The Pleasance is also your own professional live performance venue plus your fabulous societies centre for the rest of the year. With rooms to suit everything from ballroom dancing to chess, and the friendliest bar in Edinburgh, The Pleasance is at the heart of student society life.

Venture upstairs and you’ll find Pi in the Sky serving freshly prepared healthy hot meals every day and a hugely popular noodle bar. The newly refurbished KB Gym, with fantastic value membership deals for students, badminton and squash courts, and busy shop, makes KB well worth a visit for a drop in lunch or a quick workout.

The Underground is a fantastic live music venue and tonight we bring you an example of why Scottish live bands are where its at this year. Describing themselves as a ‘Gig attacked by an axe-wielding maniac’ Bwani Junction headlined the BBC Introducing stage last year at T in the Park and have recorded a full Radio 1 session at Maida Vale for Huw Stevens. Also having been nominated for ‘Scottish band of the year’ – Bwani Junction are definitely on the up – see them while you can people!
Dirty Hearts Club DJ’s After the bands have finished, we’re going to round the night off with a set from the Dirty Hearts Club DJs. Creating legendary status pretty quick-smart in Aberdeen with their weekly night, the Dirty Hearts Club went from strength to strength and celebrated its fifth birthday with special guests Frightened Rabbit. Now a monthly event, the night has seen the likes of Optimo, Errors, Hot Chip, Filthy Dukes amongst others, and the DJs have played at T in the Park, Triptych, and DJ’d with Calvin Harris, Zane Lowe to name a few!
The Little Kicks are another of Scotland’s proud exports – they have become very well known for their catchy upbeat Indie pop songs and reputation for a great live show and have had a fantastic summer of festivals. Having shared stages with the likes of Foals, The Vaccines, Frightened Rabbit, Glasvegas, Maximo Park, Mystery Jets, Errors, The Kooks, Editors, The Macabees and many more – they are very much looking forward to pleasing your ears and making your feet dance like crazy in The Underground.

Monahan is the proud owner of three vastly different cultural influences. Born in his mother’s home country of Iran, Patrick’s dad is from Ireland, but our fella grew up in Teeside, in the 1980s. Monahan’s appeal is wide and varied. The non-smoking, non-drinking comedian relies on a clean-cut image and easygoing style to put his audiences at ease; his jokes are anecdotal and storytelling in style. Even his improv skills are nifty. What’s not to like?

The Historic Vaults Tour Meet at Bristo Square, Point C • 3.15pm If walls could talk, these are the stories they would tell! A great bridge was built spanning the deep valley to the south of the Royal Mile. Under its 19 enormous arches, in a catacomb of underground chambers, a community began to thrive. Trades, first legal and then illicit, flourished – and in hard times there was nothing that couldn’t be bought or sold! Created in the late 18th Century, the Underground Vaults had been abandoned by the 1830s, and were only opened again to the public in 1996. The labyrinth of corridors and chambers you visit therefore remains unchanged from two hundred years ago. Visit this unique attraction and capture a very special moment in the evolution of this city.
