Mindset of a designer in the twentyfirst century

THE FIVE ESSENTIAL HABITS OF A ||21ST CENTURY DESIGNER Many design schools are attempting to recreate education fit for future design by integrating movements such as Open-design, Service-design, Critical design and other design methods. But questionable is if they are taking some important parameters into account whilst teaching their students the methods.

FUNDAMENTAL THEMES ||21ST CENTURY DESIGNER The coming themes are fundamental to register a 21st century design mindset. The five habits can help harness amongst some future obstacles explored but are to be explored within the triangulation of ‘Dynamic vs temporal’ , Human vs nonhuman intelligence & ubiquity of communication

DYNAMIC VERSUS TEMPORAL ||21ST CENTURY DESIGNER The dynamic timeframe has assembled a shift from linear to infinite. Non-linear approach asks not to problem solve but think in constellations, traveling from question to the next question. This constellation is intertwined with the decentralized landscape disputing the categories we valued for a long time, hierarchical systems should be examined and potentially reframed.

HUMAN VS NONHUMAN ||21ST CENTURY DESIGNER The relationship between humans versus nonhumans is challenged. Once we have created classified terminology’s to shape our thoughts and structures around them; objects, users, producers and designer. But in the 21st century we should understand the shift of our relationship towards nonhumans and question how we use or even co-create or cooperate with them

UBIQUITY OF COMMUNICATION ||21ST CENTURY DESIGNER Essential is to create sociality amongst the actors within this network, roles challenged because of the ways we are able to communicate. Being aware of the difference in cultures within variable disciplines is utterly important within the 21st century. communication is key.

THE FIVE ESSENTIAL HABITS OF A ||21ST CENTURY DESIGNER With ‘The five essential habits of a designer’, it is crucial for designers to let go of some 20th century thinking patterns. With this I am referring to vertical thinking, object thinking, and working in isolated silos of design environments and lacking scientific imput.

OPEN FRAMEWORK ||21ST CENTURY DESIGNER This manifesto is presented to pass on knowledge of some important changes within our reshaping landscape. Because I believe that knowledge is liquid and co-oporation is key, this manifesto is an open framework making it possible for everyone to contribute interesting methods and findings to integrate in ones learning regarding the five habits. The contributions can be done and explored by clicking on the icon that accompanies the ‘habit’.

DYNAMICS OF TIME ||21ST CENTURY DESIGNER The digital environment creates an time to be more dynamic. Formerly time was exclusively linear with a beginning and an end. Nowadays this temporality has become non-temporal. The future is able to happen before the present. This speculative time-complex asks a drastic shift in mindset. This helps to reshape timeframes and speculate of (nearby) futures based on events happening

REPRESENTATION OF THE DESIGNER ||21ST CENTURY DESIGNER Artifacts or nonhuman are no longer static in form. New forms of technology reshapes the way a designer can create value. Nonhumans can also be ‘data’ taking on ephemeral shapes or even living entity’s. The artifacts carry different forms of temporality. Designers should shift the mindset from solely crafts on static product to data driven. Data is able to distribute value through it instead of making it the final subject of matter.

THE WORLD AS A LAB ||21ST CENTURY DESIGNER Cross-functionality increases spreading knowledge amongst disciplines. Designers are working within a variety of fields. Fields are opening up to work with more then scientific statements. And designers do the mixing. But this raises criticality’s about incomplete knowledge. Scientists apprehend if designers bear respect for complexity towards scientific processes and methods. Designers should have a fundament of scientific understanding to interact with various stakeholders alongside of an actor-network. This value can be gained by updating knowledge on innovations and trends within the scientific fields.

EAT CRITICAL ||21ST CENTURY DESIGNER A stable triangle to build up a critical perspective on the world as we know it. Designers should be able to switch in mindset and create a meta-critical view on contemporary and future changes within our world. This can help by feeding of the -EAT- framework

SOCIALITY IN COMMUNITY’S ||21ST CENTURY DESIGNER Participation can open up new perspectives Not only within design community’s but also combining the group with a variaty of disciplines. This last seems to be a difficult task for design education.

Cultureberg Workshop The Cultureberg Workshop is a futures scenario-building workshop, developed from the critical futures technique Causal Layered Analysis (CLA). Building on the same processes and methods as CLA, Odd Studio have designed creative tools and tasks which help participants to form and visualise future worlds. By adding creative dimensions to the existing CLA method, we believe that engaging with current and future problems can be made more innovative and accessible.

Future Interactions Game

https://www.tudelft.nl/io/onderzoek/research-labs/connected-everyday-lab/future-interactions-game/

How can new technologies enrich our everyday lives and how can they be embodied in a meaningful way? With the Future Interactions game we have created a board game to explore the social value of new technologies. The aim of the game is to conjure future interactions by using our imagination and creativity, and to reflect on the possibilities and challenges that these futures impose upon our everyday lives. Physical playing cards are used to help conjure these future interactions in an experiential manner.

The Design Boat

Mailboat Mailboats are message-sized vessels, originally sent from remote islands to reach unknowns shores, designed to carry words on the tide from one beach to another, to send questions and receive floating replies. Initially a mailboat was sent from the Orkney Islands destined towards the mythic place of Silicon Valley saying “I know your world by its absent presence in mine. You haunt me. Your home haunts me. Where does Silicon Valley not haunt?
