Becoming financially literate… On Saturday, April, 25, the Mount Alvernia High School (MAHS)’s Women of Tomorrow (WOT) Mentorship Group celebrated its second anniversary. The meeting which was held on the meeting room of the Rex Nettleford Hall, located of the University of the West Indies’ Mona campus. The guest speaker for the evening was Mrs. Rose Miller, who is the Grants Manager at the Jamaica National (JN) Foundation. Her topic, Financial Empowerment, a topic which many of the mentees admitted that they were never given a formal class about. Mrs. Miller presentation was filled with many applicable take away points, many of which the ladies in attendance planned to apply to their personal lives. What made the presentation all the more beneficial to the young mentees is that, their mentors offered real life experiences wherein they did or didn’t apply these financial gems to their own lives. After Mrs. Miller’s presentation, small tokens of appreciation were given out to not only to the guest speaker, Mrs. Rose Miller but also to the programme’s mentors: Mrs. Janet Genus, Mrs. Janyce Hearne as well as Mrs. Jacqueline Nicholson. The tokens were in recognition of the mentor’s commitment to the group for the past two years. Of note, Ms. Yanique Baker from UWI Western Jamaica Campus in Montego Bay was in attendance at the meeting. Ms. Daena Plowright, one of the mentees, was rewarded for her assistance with the group’s fundraising efforts. The funds Daena raised were used to purchase the cake for the event as well as the tokens of appreciation the mentors. The group’s activites will resume it’s activities in September 2015. 2
