TOP’s JAPAN

4

JAPAN I am totally in love with Japan!

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

This is the only country where I am crazily in love with every destination they have to offer. Every place is so amazingly picturesque. I keep travelling back for more than 10 times with family and friends. I love specially to travel with my son "Ifan" as I get to know more about him on every trip we make and to see his excitement experiencing new things was so priceless.

Japan is the one and only place where the beauty of its nature blends in perfectly well with the politeness of their culture. The pictures are from Mount Fuji, Shirakawa-go with the snow and Tokyo with its Disneyland.

LONDON

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

United Kingdom November 2017. A memorable holiday with my husband, Sam, to my most favourite city in the UK. A belated wedding anniversary celebration which was postponed since June due to our busy work schedule. Regretted not going on the London Eye, one of the world’s tallest Ferris wheels. Enjoyed a pub lunch for the first time and I had the best fish & chips and mushy peas ever! My wow moment was our stay at the beautiful Corinthia Hotel in a suite with the most stunning view of the London Eye, no regrets at the end! Aaishah Bohari Bangkok

TRINIDAD & VIÑALES Cuba

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

I chose to share which is just the perfect escape destination for a short break while living in Havana or is just a must-go when coming to Cuba: Trinidad and Viñales. Each place is 3 hours away and those two places fascinate me. For me, it's not only important where I go but most importantly as well with whom, and this trip I made with my wife and family, my brother-in law and his wife. It was their first visit to Cuba, so of course, Trinidad and Viñales was a must-see and it was my first time, too. And I was really happily surprised. This is the beauty of Cuba, so full of surprises and contrasts. I regret not having stayed some more days to explore more of the nature or more of the beaches in Trinidad. I totally enjoyed staying totally disconnected for more than 4 days and although it was only a short trip, it was relaxing like a two weeks holiday. Alessandro Benedetti Havana

12

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

Trinidad and surroundings: what I loved about this place is the combination between an amazingly picturesque and ancient Spanish colonial town, where the clock seems to have stopped two centuries ago, full of Cuban life and spirit…

…and the beautiful nature of the surrounding attractions such as the mountain area (Tope de Collantes) where you find yourself in the middle of a lush tropical nature, untouched, with beautiful waterfalls, rivers and small lakes to discover or the Sugar Valley (Valle de los Ingenios) with the ruins of dozens of Sugar mills, warehouses or colonial style mansions or the nearby Playa Alcón, one of the best beaches on the Cuban south coast.

13

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

Viñales Valley: despite it being a touristic spot it is still incredibly unspoiled, so quiet and just beautiful and a destination where I can truly relax and disconnect from the "outside world".

My highlight was riding 4 hours on a horse through the valley, seeing oxen working the rust-coloured tobacco plantations and fields driven by a cigar-smoking “guajiro”... it takes you to a different era and time. There is no data connection, no internet and the name of the valley does honour what it says... The Valley of Silence.

AMANDA’s EASTER ISLAND

RAPA NUI Also known at Easter Island, Chile

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

As the Easter Islands are under the remote rule of Chile, we boarded a ship in the colourful town of Valparaiso in Chile and sailed 2300 miles west (4 days) before arriving to this remote and little explored Pacific Island, also known as Rapa Nui. The mystery and history of this Island is very unique with hundreds of giant stone Moai statues of 13 feet high, scattered throughout the Island. The volcanic crater was beautiful! It is extremely difficult to get to, however it was well worth the long trip and has always ranked amongst my most incredible travel adventures. Amanda Elder Dubai

21

PERU For this scrapbook, I would like to talk about Peru. Since my mother is half Peruvian it is a country that is very close to my heart :)

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

We went on a family trip for the first time in 2006, I was only 14 years old. In the picture on the right (please do not laugh!) you can see an image on the top of Machu Picchu with my 3 brothers. I would really recommend you to go there. The friendliness of the people is rare and the country's nature is absolutely overwhelming. We were supposed to go back during this Easter vacation but due to the current situation we had to postpone the trip, that is why it couldn't be any other destination for me right now!

PANTELLERIA Italy

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

Where is this place? Hardly anyone has ever heard of that small islands, which belongs to Sicily, but is actually closer to Tunisia – on clear days you can even see the Tunisian coast which is 60km away. With 7,700 inhabitants the volcanic island spreads over 85 km² and can be reached by plane from Palermo or Rome. Who did you go with? With my partner Jérôme What made it so special? We found that incredible Dammuso KUKA, a typical Pantelleria stone house converted into a stylish holiday home with design furniture, outdoor pool and a view to die for. The next village was around 2km away, where we used to go for our morning coffee surrounded by the locals….The house came with an old Range Rover allowing us to discover every corner of the islands. CALIFORNIA United States of America

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

My most favourite and an another home for me is Central California - San Francisco Bay area, Silicon Valley, and Santa Cruz Mountains where I lived for a couple of years. First time I went was in high school for a year. I gained a true second family there and kept going back, and most recently for vacations. It is an amazing place nestled in the mountains, but mere 20 minutes from the beach. Amazing escape and an extreme mind-relaxation for me. The most eye-opening was how different people there were at first, or more precisely how they did things differently. One of the best experiences are often the simplest ones - for me it was the ocean and having a bonfire on the beach, listening to the waves crash; or running along the coast at sunrise. I regret not travelling more, not seeking out more experiences in the area. And not taking more pictures as I was barely able to scramble a few to send you :) Michal SĂĄdovskĂ˝ High Tatras

CESME Turkey My favourite holiday destination is a small town in western Turkey called Cesme.

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

I have been spending most of my summer holidays in Cesme over the years with friends and family. We usually rent a small casual apartment which has direct access to the beach and one of the most amazing sunset views you can imagine, where the sun sets behind the Greek island of Chios. What makes its special is its climate, always windy and pleasant, no humidity, ice cold sea water which I am a fan of, amazing seafood and restaurants. All restaurants and hotels are boutique and family owned, so no mass tourism. All of this provides a perfect environment for a peaceful holiday at amazingly reasonable prices too. Now I will leave you with some photos, hope you enjoy it.

PETER’s PAMIR ROADTRIP

37

THE PAMIR Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan With two friends I would embark on an unparalleled journey in summer of 2018. None of us had any idea of what to expect but we knew it would be a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that would have the power to change us as a person.

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

We took off for legendary Pamir – a mountain range in Central Asia close to the Himalayas, part of the ancient Silk Road and right next to Karakorum, the highest road on earth. The Pamir Plateau covers one of the most remote and untapped areas of the world. Feel inspired by a total absence of the internet during at least a week, by talking to unique people whose lifestyle is so different from yours, by meeting other travellers from all over the world who are looking for what you are looking for. In short, a book would not be enough to describe all that you gain on such a trip. If you have gotten hungry now, take your chance as soon as you can, as this travel destination is becoming increasingly popular! Peter Trampert Geneva

38

Our mind-blowing journey started in beautiful Osh, Kyrgyzstan's second biggest city, not only famous for its lovely bazars. After crossing borders with Tajikistan we would take off for an idyllically unreal trip through nature that is spiked with virgin paths, untouched lakes and impressive small towns – with awesome homestay experiences, which could potentially be complemented with a Kempinski luxury camp one day, as this would be totally aligned with the pioneering atmosphere all over the place.

Gifted with all climate and vegetation zones in a relatively small area, you would face rough and icy conditions at a height of several thousand meters. Right next to it, you’d find sandy deserts with an astonishing view on gigantic mountains that look like fallen out of time. Shortly after you would indulge in juicy green landscapes embedding little rivers and waterfalls – a real paradise for any instagrammer, by the way.

39

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

Our trip would also take us through locally famous Wakhan Valley, along a beautiful Afghanistan with unbelievable views spanning from little Afghan villages to the Pakistani parts of the Hindu Kush mountain range.

Slowly leaving the Pamir Plateau we would then finally approach Tadjikistan´s vibrant capital Dushanbe in one of the lovely Mashrutkas, where this amazing experience would finish for us – while others started off from here.

What makes it so special is that it’s a very small island (3 km2), on the Pink Granite Coast with a luxurious vegetation, lots of flowers and no cars. You can only walk or bike across small trackways. Of course it’s in Brittany, and it’s in the English Channel, so the weather is not always the best and the water is super cold… There is nothing hype or trendy in this place but it’s amazingly beautiful and the light is stunning. This is my favourite place in the world and I’ve been going there since I’m a child so I have so many great memories with family.

In February 2020 my cousin was in Unawatuna for Ayurvedic treatment so I decided to spend time with her and visit the country. With palm-lined beaches, turquoise waters and a good selection of guesthouses and restaurants, Unawatuna is very popular with travellers. The location is great, with the historic city of Galle just 6km away and a wooded headland to the west dotted with tiny coves. Generally all kind of beaches ring the island so that no matter where you go, you will be near a sandy gem. You should not miss a Jungle Beach when visiting Unawatuna. Anna Soukup Munich

One of the top places I can recommend is Fraser Island. It´s is a heritage-listed island on the coast of Queensland, Australia. The visit was one of the most memorable experiences during our trip to Australia´s East coast 1,5 years ago. Apart from it´s natural beauty the island is supposedly one of two places worldwide where planes are allowed to take off and land on the beach (I didn´t check but the second spot should be somewhere in Ireland). Anyways, this was an incredible experience and Australia will definitely be on my travel list again.

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

My wife and I have always loved to travel. Before we had children, we were sure we would never have to change our ways of life (how foolish we were), so after our daughter was born, to prove to ourselves we could still travel, we planned a 2-weeks adventure from Switzerland to Denmark, then on to Iceland, then to Sweden and back to Switzerland… with a 10month old baby. Iceland was really a fantastic discovery. Stretches of empty vastness, majestic glaciers, black sand beaches, waterfalls, geysers, volcanoes, and much more. We rented a Jeep with a baby-seat and explored the island as much as we could. But there’s so much more to discover, so much sea and sky and wildlife. Now we have two children, and we keep on travelling, although we go for more “relaxed” destinations ;-)

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

I went to Menjangan Island with my family right after the New Year 2020 to GET TOGETHER as my elder daughter was in Bali from Jakarta for her studying, to share our loves and of course to enjoy the beauty of Bali and the best Coral Reef on the Island. Menjangan Island is part of West Bali National Park. You can cross over to this small island by boat from the port of Labuhan Lalang near Pemuteran Beach in North Bali. The island spans around 38 km2, with savannahs that are home to the rare Javan rusa deer (called “menjangan in the local tongue and which gave the island its name). Down at the coastline, calm waters and coral gardens teeming with marine life offer diving and snorkelling with excellent visibility year round. WHY Menjangan Island for us as family: to Introduce the beautiful nature of Bali to my children and sightseeing around the Island to discover Menjangan Temple. We spent almost a full day and returned in the afternoon with a very calm sea, so no one got sea sick. Kadek Budiasa Bali

MARIO’s STROMBOLI

61

STROMBOLI Italy

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

Stromboli is a tiny island off Sicily’s coast in Italy. You might also know about the island’s most peculiar feature – an active volcano that has been in continuous eruption for at least 2,000 years. I honestly can’t think of many places of a similar tranquillity and simplicity. Stromboli town is not a luxurious place where you can buy everything at any time. It consists of simple cubical whitewashed houses and their equally simple green gardens. There is only a tiny shop offering the absolute minimum you need in daily life, and apart from a few hotel restaurants there is only one pizzeria. In the evening, the day tourists leave the island and it becomes really quiet. The island is car-free and also there aren’t even street lights. Having a thing for geography and geology visiting Stromboli wasn’t just for switching off and disconnecting. It had been a dream since childhood to visit this island and observe volcanic activity in real time. Mario Stöger Geneva

62

For your safety, it is strongly forbidden to cross a 400 metres altitude level on your own. But you can join a guided tour to the crater. You are provided with a helmet, goggles and a torch but you should bring good hiking shoes. You start climbing the mountain in the late afternoon. It is not a very hard hike but there can be a very sticky heat and in the end and be aware that you will climb from sea level to 918 meters.

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

The view is stunning, obvioulsy. Stromboli town will become smaller and smaller below you, and at good weather conditions, southwards you can see Sicily and the Etna. When you think the hike will never end you are shaken by a loud bang announcing that you are almost there. Here, above 400 metres, it is crucial to wear a helmet and to stay alert at all times as you can be hit by volcanic bombs. The goggles are there to protect your eyes from ash containing extremely sharp particles of volcanic glass. Once you reach the summit you have an incredible view into the crater but also over the sea, and the neighbouring islands. With a frequency of a few minutes you will see vapour columns rising from a crater on the left. A couple of minutes later, with a hissing sound, a pitch black ash cloud rises from the middle. And then you have the lava eruption on the right, with the earsplitting bang reaching you a second later. You watch it several times while the sun goes down over the sea. When it’s time to leave it is almost dark and you take a route through an ash field, which is like walking over a sand dune in the desert. If you are as lucky as I was, the moon is shining, turning everything into dark blue.

SANTORINI Greece This Greek island is simply stunning and definitely worth a visit.

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

The deep blue waters, the warm-hearted people and of course the picturesque scenery with its famous white houses make it a very beautiful place. The most wonderful thing we did was a catamaran-sunset tour. It may sound a bit of a cliché, but I have rarely seen a sunset like this: it was really magical with the sound of the saxophone version of "Despacito" in the background.

Even off-season in September/October it is warm and less crowded, and renting a car exploring the island is definitely a good idea, when being an experienced driver. I would recommend not to get a hotel in the most renowned cities such as Oía or Firá, but would go to the beach side to Kamari. And the food - just yummy! Kathrin Sengotta Dominica

TUSCANY Italy

MAKE A TRAVEL PROMISE

The first place that comes to mind for me is Tuscany, where we had our first holiday as a family of three. We're lucky to live close to the Italian border so we drove there, which is always helpful since toddlers seem to have more baggage than someone ten times their age... The first week was spent in the countryside in Castelfiorentino, going for day trips to beautiful nearby towns including Lucca, Certaldo, San Gimignano, Pisa and Siena, admiring the views and eating as much ice-cream as we possibly could. A visit to Giardino Zoologico di Pistoia was definitely a highlight for the smallest one of the group! After a few days splashing around on the beach at Forte dei Marmi there was a stop off in Genoa. And so, as parents, the late nights in bars were replaced with cosy nights in admiring the sunsets, and snoozing on a sun lounger became a distant memory. But if you've got sun, pizza, and even a few penguins, you're going to have a pretty unforgettable holiday. Jaclyn Thomas Geneva

I visited Mauritius Island in 2013 with my husband, and we stayed at the beachfront house of our close friends, who had exchanged Moscow for this truly magnificent place. The Republic of Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean, about 2,000 km off the southeast coast of the African continent. The island is surrounded by more than 150 km of white sandy beaches, and its lagoons are protected by the world’s third-largest coral reef. Mauritius is perfect not only for sunbathing, but also for experiencing a full variety of water sports – windsurfing, diving and snorkelling. And of course, this is a real paradise for all photography amateurs – one can endlessly capture all the diversity of the local nature, having the crystal-clear ocean and white sand in the background. No Photoshop needed! And in the night sky, you can see the Southern Cross he, and other constellations that are not visible in the northern hemisphere. Lana Melnikova Moscow

And, of course, you should definitely taste the most famous vanilla tea, boxes of which completely filled my suitcase on the way back to Russia.

In the southwestern part of the island, there is the most iconic landmark of Mauritius, which I can definitely include in the list of my personal wow-places – Chamarel’s Seven Coloured Earths Geopark, where you can see a truly surreal landscape. This small area is covered with sand dunes, representing seven different colours (red, brown, purple, green, blue, purple and yellow). The unique feature of this place is that these colours do not mix in rainy or windy conditions.

It is also a timely but a sombre reminder also now that the US is suffering the most from this Pandemic. I'm very impressed by how important it is to be with family and have conversations with them. More listening and paying attention to every detail during the trip.

I wish humans would pay more attention to the natural environment and love our planet. Travel plans can be to go out of the city to take a look at our forests, our rivers and our flowers. I wish that our company would open a new luxury resort there. Larry Zhong Chengdu
