Lansing is truly the heartbeat of Michigan. Besides being located in the center of this great state and being the capital, there is so much outdoor wildlife to be enjoyed in and around our urban center. You are never far from a refreshing walk in the woods and you can easily dip your toes in a fresh, clear body of water.

Our community has a thriving and passionate culture of hunting and shing enthusiasts and many places to enjoy both of these sports. Let’s take a look at some of the popular spots, organizations, and hidden gems.

HUNTING AND FISHING ORGANIZATIONS IN LANSING If you are new to the area, new to the sport, or simply want to connect with more people are love hunting and shing, here are some great groups to check out.

Safari Club International, Lansing Chapter Safari Club (SCI) is an international organization that primarily focuses on Hunter Advocacy with chapters all over the world. The members are passionate about sportsmanship, laws regarding hunting rights, and sharing the love of hunting with younger generations. The group is very generous to the Michigan DNR, funding many studies and projects. SCI also sends local teachers to Wyoming every summer to learn more about outdoor education through their American Wilderness Leadership School (AWLS.) While there, teachers also have the option of becoming certi- ed to instruct archery. They can then start an archery program at their school and SCI helps provide the necessary equipment to get the program started. The Lansing chapter holds several meetings a year, social events, fundraisers, auctions, and ra’les. To nd out more information or to attend their next event please visit lansingsci.com

The Demmer Center The Demmer Center is part of the Michigan State University Campus and is open to the public. Demmer is a shooting sports training facility with both indoor and outdoor archery ranges (including a 3D walking course). They also have indoor rearm ranges. Demmer o’ers a variety of shooting experiences ranging from beginner to advanced in both archery and rearms including our Introductory Archery and Firearms sessions. They also o’er experiences designed specically for women and children, as well as classes such as the Basic Pistol Certication Class and frequent Concealed Pistol License classes. Capital Area Sportsmen’s League This club is a membership club that provides indoor and outdoor pistol and rifle ranges, indoor and outdoor archery ranges, and an outdoor shotgun range. Members enjoy access to the beautiful ranges, a hall to rent and many fun activities and clubs. This club also hosts the annual Michigan Youth Hunter Education Challenge is a youth program of the National Rifle Association of America and is recognized as the most comprehensive youth hunting program anywhere in North America. Rose Lake Shooting Range The DNR-sta†ed Rose Lake shooting range o†ers a safe shooting environment and is family-friendly. You will work with highly trained employees that are very friendly. Rose Lake has a rifle/pistol range, hand trap range, and an archery range. The range is available for youth groups and hunter education programs. Rose Lake also provides public hunting land. POPULAR PUBLIC FISHING SPOTS IN LANSING You are always within casting distance of many public ‰shing spots in the Lansing area. You will ‰nd an abundance of freshwater ‰sh including trout, bass, walleye, pan‰sh and more! Here are some of the better-known spots.

Hawk Island Park. 100-acre, all-seasons park that is family-friendly. It also features boat rental (seasonal), swimming (beach and splash pad), trails, large playground, snowboarding and sledding, and a dog park. Several pavilions and a bathroom. Fitzgerald Park. The beautiful “Ledges” park in Grand Ledge (just west of Lansing) boasts one of the best spots for Fly Fishing on the Grand River. Check out the section from Lansing downstream to the Fitzgerald Dam in Grand Ledge. 133 Fitzgerald Park Drive, Grand Ledge, MI 48837

Lake Lansing. Lake Lansing is located in Haslett, Michigan (just a few miles northeast of Lansing) and is a 450-acre natural lake approximately Access the lake through Lake Lansing Park where you can rent a boat, enjoy their ‰shing dock and picnic shelters, and swim at the beach. Sleepy Hollow State Park. Sleepy Hollow is located 18 miles northeast of Lansing and includes a boat launch, campground, hiking, biking, equestrian trails, picnic shelters, and snowmobiling and ice ‰shing in the winter. Nice little park next to the Red Cedar River along the Lansing River Trail. It is across Pennsylvania Avenue from Ingham County’s Potter Park and Zoo.

Brenke Fish Ladder. Located in Lansing’s Old Town district and situated along the Lansing River Trail. The ‰sh ladder is architecturally beautiful while also serving an ecological purpose. Shubel Park. A great little park for ‰shing. It is bordered on three sides by the Red Cedar River and has a short path for hiking. 1655 Lindbergh Drive, Lansing, MI 48910

Moores Park. Community park, playground, basketball courts and public pool located next to the Red Cedar River close to downtown and in view of the automotive plants. A beautiful, natural space in an urban setting. 400 Moores River Dr, Lansing, Michigan

HIDDEN GEMS FOR FISHING The following two spots are lesser-known (well, not anymore!) and provide some very peaceful ‰shing options.

Lake Delta Park. A serene lake that lies beside an industrial smokestack on Lansing’s westside in Delta Township. Park in a gravel lot of canal street and walk a shady trail around the lake to several ‰shing spots. There are a couple of docks or you can shore ‰sh. Lincoln Brick Park. A county park located in Grand Ledge (Eaton County) just west of Lansing. This park has many trails, a beach, and river ‰shing, as well as a couple of smaller ‰shing holes.
