Discover Lansing’s Community of Fishing and Hunting

By Amy Zander

Lansing is truly the heartbeat of Michigan. Besides being located in the center of this great state and being the capital, there is so much outdoor wildlife to be enjoyed in and around our urban center. You are never far from a refreshing walk in the woods and you can easily dip your toes in a fresh, clear body of water. Our community has a thriving and passionate culture of hunting and fishing enthusiasts and many places to enjoy both of these sports. Let’s take a look at some of the popular spots, organizations, and hidden gems. HUNTING AND FISHING ORGANIZATIONS IN LANSING If you are new to the area, new to the sport, or simply want to connect with more people are love hunting and fishing, here are some great groups to check out. Safari Club International, Lansing Chapter Safari Club (SCI) is an international organization that primarily focuses on Hunter Advocacy with chapters all over the world. The members are passionate about sportsmanship, laws regarding hunting rights, and sharing the love of hunting with younger generations. The group is very generous to the Michigan 24 BeLocal

DNR, funding many studies and projects. SCI also sends local teachers to Wyoming every summer to learn more about outdoor education through their American Wilderness Leadership School (AWLS.) While there, teachers also have the option of becoming certified to instruct archery. They can then start an archery program at their school and SCI helps provide the necessary equipment to get the program started. The Lansing chapter holds several meetings a year, social events, fundraisers, auctions, and raffles.
