about the

COVER BWL’s largest power plant is the Otto E. Eckert Station. It was named after the utility’s general manager from 1927 to 1966. The coal-fired generating station is located in downtown Lansing on the Grand River, adjacent to General Motors’ Grand River Assembly Plant and the now-demolished Lansing Car Assembly Plant. The Eckert Power Plant — arguably the capital city’s most iconic building, besides the Capitol itself has been given the nickname Wynken, Blynken and Nod by area residents. LOCAL > NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER

WELCOME TO

GREATER LANSING As a born and raised resident of the Greater Lansing area I take pride in welcoming you to your new home. I grew up in Mason and during my younger years, Lansing was not the desired area to live. Downtown didn’t have much to offer and most residents stayed in their own towns to work and play. A lot has changed in the area over the last 20 years.

Insert BeLocal Greater Lansing. Our goal with BeLocal Greater Lansing is to provide needed information, perspective stories from locals, tips and hidden gems that you can only get from those who have lived in our city. All of our business sponsors have gone through a vetting process and most have been recommended to us as some of the very best in their industries.

Lansing is home to the Lansing Lugnuts, the AAA baseball club that calls Cooley Law School Stadium home. Lansing is also home to the states only professional soccer team, Lansing Ignite who also call Cooley Law School Stadium home. As the capital city, we have a lot of state government happenings in Lansing which brings excitement to the Capitol lawn on a regular basis. But this area has a lot more to offer, from a beautiful river trail, hunting and fishing opportunities, urban living, Michigan State University, and much more.

I hope you have had a chance to settle into your new home, start a conversation with your neighbor or visit a local farmers market. I have found over the last 6 years that this city is very small. Everyone knows everyone, which is great. People truly care about others, Lansing has more non-profit organizations than I can count and the business community seems to always be stepping up to make a difference.

Moving can be an exciting time but also can be stressful. Our team has been working in the Greater Lansing area for over 6 years working with specific communities helping build community and friendship. Over the years we saw a need for a product that can help families moving into and around Greater Lansing get acclimated quickly and offer options for reputable businesses to hire or visit.

Welcome to your new home! I hope to run into you on the river trail, your new favorite BBQ joint or at the ballpark.

What I dream of is an art of balance. - Henri Matisse, French Artist, 1869-1954 So you’ve recently moved to the Lansing area, and perhaps the idea of being in balance is one you can only dream about, one which seems entirely out of reach right now! Moving to a new location is most QHVGP UVTGUUHWN UECT[ NQPGN[ CPF ſNNGF YKVJ WPGCUKPGUU I well remember our family’s first major move almost 23 years ago when my husband Steve and I piled into our 1993 Subaru Impreza with our firstborn infant daughter in tow and motored the 935 miles from Chapel Hill, North Carolina to Madison, Wisconsin‌ and then four years later, in the Spring of 2000, another major move, this time with our weeks-old second daughter, to Lansing, Michigan. Each move for medical training, a career path we had agreed upon at the onset of our marriage – to Wisconsin for four years and to Michigan for what we thought would be one. 14 BeLocal

But as the Lansing area has become home to us over these past almost 20 years, I look back and know how blessed we are to be in this amazing city and how I would have explored the many gifts of this location earlier and differently. Let’s look at how you are moving to the other side of this adventure of transformation and ways to find meaning, fulfillment, and balance in your new life. When we experience a dramatic change, like relocating to a new place, we go through a grieving process 2020

LOCAL > PERSPECTIVE

– denial, anger, bargaining, depression (associated with mourning), and acceptance. I remember the initial shock around the simple fact that we were moving from Chapel Hill, a warm-weather location, to someplace that could be 90 degrees colder on any given day! Or feeling angry about having to leave everything and everyone we’d known as a married couple – all our common friends and shared interests – gone! Then thinking (bargaining) that perhaps after my husband’s four years of training we could return to North Carolina. And being pregnant with my first child was already emotional enough, but packing throughout the entire last trimester was very depressing for me. The real moment of acceptance didn’t come until we were pulling into the parking lot of our new apartment in Wisconsin. The grieving process is rarely straight forward; nor do we move through the stages in a tidy manner. Most people jump around from one to the other but recognizing that grief accompanies change is important for all of us to understand. It’s normal and it’s healthy. This is how we make sense of our new normal and begin to create a meaningful life in a new place. Perhaps getting stuck in that grieving process was one reason it took me so long to embrace living in Lansing. By the time we arrived, it was my eighth move in ten years, and I anticipated moving again so why get to know anyone? I was afraid to get close to people for fear of having to say goodbye. My advice to those of you who may be feeling the same way – do it anyway! Explore for the sheer adventure of it! There are so many ways to feed the mind, body, and spirit in our beautiful city! Have you ever wanted to learn how to play an instrument? The Michigan State University Community Music School has programs for all ages. Need continuing education? Lansing Community College offers in-person and online classes year-round. Try a spin class at the YMCA or check out the many independent workout facilities across Lansing. Enjoy an eclectic selection of restaurants and food trucks throughout the area. And fill your spirit with everything from natural settings to metaphysical boutiques to church communities and art museums. When you take time to venture out and invest in connection, you will find that Lansing offers something for everyone.    The key to an abundance of ideas lies in the Greater Lansing Convention & Visitors Bureau. Hop online and search lansing.org or walk in and say hello at their office on Michigan Avenue! They have great suggestions for where to find PEOPLE, NATURE, ATHLETICS, KIDS ACTIVITIES, CULTURAL ATTRACTIONS, and even

SENSORY-FRIENDLY areas of the city. I once discovered a Canadian architect who makes stunning jewelry when I was vacationing in Cape Cod. Upon returning home, I searched his website to determine if I could buy his jewelry online. I quickly realized he was only in a handful of boutiques in the United States – Absolute Gallery in Old Town being the only one in Michigan! It’s those serendipitous delights I began to discover once I opened my heart to the possibilities within my community.    As I observe the new construction going on all around the Mid-Michigan area and listen to people discuss the growth and opportunities associated with that, it creates a sense of real pride! Saying that I live in the Capital City of Michigan means I live in an innovative, intelligent, diverse area of the country where the people share a growth mindset and a genuine concern for one another. Achieving the art of balance comes from having awareness about how we are attending to our inner messages of well being while using our outer environment and resources to help support it. Make it a strong day!

FUN FOR

FINDING YOUR FAMILY FUN IN GREATER LANSING

ALL!

By Amy Romback, local Macaroni Kid Publisher

As a mom of two active little ones, finding ways to entertain and exhaust them is one of my top priorities. It’s also kind of my job. I’m your local Macaroni Kid Publisher. I find your family fun! Thankfully, it’s not hard to do in the Lansing area. Our Capital City and surrounding areas are full of family-friendly activities for all ages. No matter the weather, you are sure to find something fun to do both indoors and out. Here are my 5 top “must-explores” in Greater Lansing. DOWNTOWN LANSING: Take a trip to Impression 5 Science Center. My husband and I have as much fun as the kids do with the many exhibits and activities that they have to experience. Take a guided tour of the Capitol. They are available every half hour beginning at 9 AM, Monday-Saturday. After, hit up Lansing Brewing Company for a meal. It’s one of our go-to places to eat when we are with our kiddos. Sweet tooth? Strange Matter Coffee has some of the most delicious and fancy donuts you’ll find in the area. On a nice day you’ll want to catch a Lugnuts baseball game or Lansing Ignite Soccer Game. These are affordable and fun for the whole family! Old Town, the original Downtown Lansing, is not to be missed either. With the many boutiques, galleries and restaurants you could spend all day there. Show your kids how to play some old school video games at The Grid, visit the animals at the famous Preuss Pets or take a short walk down to the Brenke Fish Ladder. 16 BeLocal

MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY: Being so close to a huge university has major perks. MSU offers so many family-friendly events and activities. Explore the 4-H Children’s Garden. It’s quite literally one of the most magical places on campus. Visit the MSU Museum to learn about fossils, artifacts, and more. See a performance at Wharton Center. We are so lucky to have this incredible performing arts theatre right in our backyard! Check out a planetarium show at Abram’s Planetarium. They offer public shows specifically for children. If you appreciate art go visit the MSU Broad, our contemporary art museum. They host a free Family Day once a month and it’s sure to get your kids creative juices flowing. Local Tip: The cafeterias on campus are open to the public. Eat at Brody Cafeteria (a personal fave). No one fights over what’s for dinner because the kids can pick out whatever they want. Of course, we can’t forget the MSU Dairy Store. Go there. Now. They serve up the area’s most delicious, creamy ice cream. It’s definitely a Lansing area favorite!

THE LIBRARIES: We are huge fans of the libraries in our area! They do such an incredible job offering activitiesand events for every age and interest. Some of our personal favorites are their story-times, visits from the reindeer during the holidays, cooking classes for kids, family movie times, Storywalks and their Summer Reading Programs. Did you know that you can check out more than just books? They have launchpads, movies, toys, games and even zoo passes! The Capital Area District Libraries have 13 branches throughout Ingham County and you only need one card to get into them all! We also have the East Lansing Public Library, Dewitt District Library and the Bath Township Public Library. Our libraries offer a little something for everyone and are such a wonderful, free resource to our communities. Make sure you utilize them!

PARKS, TRAILS AND NATURE: The Lansing area boasts some of the best walking/ hiking trails around. One of our favorite things to do as a family is hiking the trails. Meridian Township has numerous wooded and paved trails as do our nature centers, Harris, Fenner and Woldumar. The longest trail in the area by far is the Lansing River Trail. This paved trail stretches over 20 miles through parks, natural areas and Downtown Lansing. You can catch it from Potter Park Zoo all the way into MSU. Speaking of Potter Park Zoo, plan a trip to see our animal friends! Local Tip: Ingham County Residents get in free on Mondays before noon. You just pay for parking! Some of our favorites are Patriarche Park in East Lansing, Lake Lansing South in Haslett, Hawk Island in Lansing and Wiswasser in Bath.

MACARONI KID WEBSITES: If you want to stay up to date on the events and activities in the area you are definitely going to want to subscribe to Macaroni Kid. My goal is to bring you all of the best family-friendly events, activities, and businesses in our area. MacKid also provides articles of interest to parents on everything from local business reviews, crafts, recipes, and much more. Oh, and giveaways. We have lots of great giveaways! Besides being located in the center of this great state and being the capital, there is so much outdoor wildlife to be enjoyed in and around our urban center. LOCAL > RESTAURANT Crunchy’s Pub, East Lansing: Starting off our list is a staple of the Michigan State Campus town. Located in the heart of the historic Spartan campus, Crunchy’s Pub has the best burger in the area that has stood the test of time. My father would tell me stories about how he and his friends used to go to Crunchy’s back in 1982 when the restaurant was opened. He spoke about how he had written his name in Sharpie somewhere in the restaurant, but we didn’t dare to look because the entire restaurant is cloaked in Sharpie sentiments. The burgers themselves are phenomenal. A half-pound patty cooked to perfection, and when combined with “Signature Toppings,” makes for one of the best burger experiences I have ever had. My favorite offering thus so far is the Famous Crunchy Burger. The “Shroom” topping (which adds Mushrooms and Swiss cheese to an already incredible patty), will make your mouth water. The classic sports bar feel of Chrunchys makes for a great place to bring a group of friends to watch your favorite sporting event and has reasonable prices to not break your wallet in the process. MEAT BBQ, Old Town Lansing: While walking down the colorful streets of Old Town, you’ll come across a building with wrought iron, gated fence. Proceed indoors and you’ll be greeted to a welcoming atmosphere filled with Star Wars paraphernalia, pictures of the staff with Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives star Guy Fieri, and the numerous awards the barbeque fare and the sides have won. MEAT Barbeque has a plethora of delicious meats to try. My favorite, the fatty brisket, cuts with the side of my fork because the brisket is so tender. The pulled pork and chicken wings are also items I tend to gravitate toward. MEAT Barbeque pairs their selection of meats with 6 delicious homemade sauces, which range from a traditional sweet BBQ sauce (“Jazzy Q”), a tangy classic Carolina mustard sauce, to a coffee-infused BBQ sauce (“Black Magic”) which carries a sweet and savory combination. I find myself putting Black Magic on everything! MEAT also offers a variety of stupendous sides. The mac and cheese (while it might have a little kick) is hands down the best mac and cheese in the area. The seasonal fruit cobbler is a sweet escape from the savory of the barbeque and the cornbread is light, moist and serves as the perfect tool for cleaning up the scraps from your plate. MEAT Barbecue is my go-to spot after class and is a great place to bring the family for a filling, tasty meal. 2020

LOCAL TIP Everyone should check out Old Town! It’s full of amazing shops and great restaurants. Always something interesting going on! Jason C., Lansing 30 years

Steakhouse Philly Bar and Grill, East Lansing: Located just off the highway and just outside of Michigan State’s campus, Steakhouse Philly has the best Greek specialties and Philly cheesesteaks in the area. The Gyros are by far the best I’ve ever tasted. The lamb is skewered and prepared fresh daily and is paired with fresh tomatoes, onions, and a homemade tzatziki sauce (which is the icing on the juicy lamb cake) served on a warm pita. The Philly cheesesteaks are fantastic, offering many takes on the Philadelphia classic, from a gyro Philly, which combines both kinds of meat into one sandwich, to a chicken Philly which is my personal favorite. The Greek grilled chicken combined with lettuce, tomato, and melted provolone, served with their fantastic fries makes steakhouse Philly a must-visit for any Lansing area resident. These items are just the start for the steakhouse. The chicken wings are fantastic! Guests may choose to enjoy wings marinated in homemade Greek seasoning or chicken wings tossed in buffalo or homemade barbeque sauce. Don’t forget to try their homemade rice pudding as a great palate cleanser or a treat for later. Steakhouse Philly provides a different style of food from your typical burgers and fries sports bar scene, this is what keeps bringing me back, to find a new selection of Greek specialties to enjoy, anytime my family or friends ask where they want to eat, I always suggest Steakhouse Philly. Thank you for reading about three of the many fantastic restaurants in the Lansing area. More and more businesses are coming to Lansing… more restaurants are coming to test the waters of this market… I hope this list helps you when you are deciding where to venture!

WHOLE FOODS

Whole Foods is going to be your ideal destination for all of your specialty organic food needs. They have an amazing produce selection including many local options. If you are a fan of sweet potatoes, definitely try the Japanese sweet potatoes (they have a red-ish skin and are white on the inside). They are my favorite for making crispy sweet potato fries. Whole Foods also has you covered for fresh meat and seafood. They have high animal welfare standards and plenty of local, organic, and grass-fed options. Definitely check out the Atlantic Salmon. This salmon is TO DIE FOR and a family favorite at my house. Typically, I only eat wild-caught seafood but at Whole Foods, the quality of farmed fish is much higher. The fish live in a healthy environment where water quality is monitored and they are fed an all-natural diet. Whole Foods carries many gluten-free, grain-free, vegan, dairy-free, etc. products making any dietary restrictions a

breeze. Also be sure to check out their bulk section for amazing prices on things like oats, beans, dried fruit, nuts and seeds, and almond flour!

EAST LANSING FARMER’S MARKET

My favorite Sunday tradition from June to October in East Lansing! The EL Farmer’s market is open 10am-2pm on Sunday’s at 280 Valley Court. Here you’ll find live music, food trucks, local and organic produce and meat, artisan bread, cheese, beautiful flowers, and more! A great opportunity to check out authentic Michigan goods and support local vendors!

Also, be sure to make a pit stop at their hot bar/salad bar for healthy on-the-go meals, their smoothie and coffee bar, and pick up a bottle of local wine on your way out! FAVORITES Atlantic Salmon 365 Spicy Arrabbiata Pasta Sauce with Calabrian Chiles Japanese sweet potatoes Siete Foods almond flour tortilla’s and dairy-free queso Ancient Nutrition vanilla collagen powder (I blend into my coffee and it’s amazing! Also great for adding extra protein to smoothies, oats, and baked goods) FitVine wine (lower in sugar than most wine and no added sulfites! My favorite is the Cabernet)

COMING SOON…
