Editor’s Letter
T
his Evanston Magazine issue carries a conversation. The conversation represents clear sight toward a better world. I am a man on a mission to bring back the ‘art of being “incredible” while maintaining true lady like grace and/or true manliness. After literally dreaming about Evanston Magazine, I set out on creating a magazine that speaks to the modern person. Having discovered a niche that wasn’t fulfilled here in the North Shore, and wanting to offer a unique point of view on the magazine industry, as well as Evanston’s unique “common” touch. Evanston Magazine is dedicated to the person of style and substance. I’ve set out to mark a new course in publishing, and this is only the beginning. I bring two decades of branding & marketing experience. Evanston is currently leading the country with the use of marijuana sales in the cities conversation about reparations. The city has always had a reputation of having productive conversations based on race and fairness. Therefore, I enjoy watching businesses grow in Evanston as Evanstonian’s know the secret. Evanston is a great place to live and raise kids. In this issue we partnered with one of the leading diamond experts in the State of Illinois- The elegant Heather S. Bormann a true lady, who has signed on to write a limited series of articles. In this series she will explain the rules of fashion from a fashion and jewelry expert perspective. She will teach the readers of Evanston Magazine a blending of fashion and diamond knowledge for the finest of women. Explore our Cover Story. In Evanston Magazine, we shine the light on what I believe is one of the biggest losses in the history of Evanston. The retiring and relocation of THE UNOFFICIAL MAYOR -DICK PEACH. 2020 Subaru Crosstrek What’s New for 2020? Subaru’s popular subcompact crossover gains a host of new features for 2020, starting with an auto stop-start system for models equipped with the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Automatic climate control, Subaru’s Intelligent Drive (SI-DRIVE) selectable driving modes, and a new collision-detection automatic door-unlock system are also standard across the range. The mid-range Premium model now can be equipped with a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and keyless entry with push-button start. Limited models get new LED fog lamps, and both the Limited and the hybrid come with rearseat USB charging ports. Subaru also moved the Crosstrek’s front-seat USB and auxiliary input jack from the center console to a bin at the bottom of the center stack, and the doors now lock automatically when the vehicle reaches 13 mph.

The Crosstrek’s base 152-hp four-cylinder engine makes a lot of noise but doesn’t offer a lot of motivation. As with many of its competitors, getting up to highway speeds can be a bit painful, no matter whether you choose the standard manual transmission or the optional automatic. In our testing, an automatic model needed a leisurely 9.2 seconds to reach 60 mph. The plug-in hybrid model proved to be quicker and shaved 0.9 second off the gasoline-only model’s zero-to-60-mph time. With its well-weighted steering and composed ride, the Crosstrek feels solid and planted through corners. The suspension is tuned to be firm but not harsh, and soaks up larger bumps with ease.

“Family always comes first, but civic duty a close second,” says Jorja McEwen of her brother Dick. Since its beginning, Dick has played Santa during Downtown Evanston’s winter Holiday Bash. He writes the awardwinning column Hooked on Fishing for the Evanston Roundtable. He has served in leadership positions in numerous Evanston’s community organizations: Evanston’s 4th of July Association, Evanston Chamber of Commerce, City of Evanston’s Liquor Control Review Board, Evanston Community Foundation, Evanston Environmental Association, WE Foundation, to name a few. He’s been president of 10

DP: When I came back from the Air Force I lived for a few months in the San Francisco bay area in Sausalito. When Rand McNally asked me to go into sales in 1975, I moved with Shelley and [step-son] Sean to Maryland. We were there for a little more than 3 years when we moved back to Evanston in 1979. We have been living on Greenleaf St. since then. KK: So there was a time you didn’t live in Evanston, outside of your time in the Air Force? DP: After I got out of the service I started helping a friend with his race car, working evenings and racing on weekends. Shelley came along to run timing and scoring for us. We were really low budget racing and we met others who were all weekend warriors racing Datsun 510 sedans. When we raced at the bigger tracks like Road America or Mid-Ohio we’d run into Paul Newman, figuratively and literally. We would sit around after a day of trading paint over a few beers. This was when we were not at open race days. When the public was allowed in, Mr. Newman never left his trailer, except to drive. At Road Atlanta for the National Championships all the crew trailers and motor homes were parked next to one another. For four or five years our crew would sneak over to Newman’s motor home and steal his Weber grill, and each year the challenge got more involved with chains, welded in brackets, steel bars. We always managed to steal it and they always knew where to find it. Good times. Shelley and I still see the racing gang once a year at their annual Christmas party. Two KK: Is there anything you’d like your neighbors to know about Kyle? DP: Kyle was more complex that most people would have known about. He made friends all over the world through his video gaming, and from the notes and letters we have received touched my people in profound ways that Shelley and I were totally unaware of. He was also the best fishing partner I have ever fished with, capable beyond his young years with his knowledge of not just how to fish, but also the impact on the entire eco-system he fished. KK: Is there anything you can think of that would surprise folks about you?

developed. We are all still friends today and get together once a year to make sure we stay in touch. They are the brothers I never had. Dick hasn’t always worked Dempster Auto Rebuilders. He’s only been there the last 34 years. While studying at the School of the Art Institute, Dick worked at Rand McNally making printing plates for the 4-color presses. After his stint in the Air Force he worked there for 13 more years as a data supervisor running the corporate computer complex, and worked later in sales. KK: Let’s Let’s get get personal. personal. How How did did you you meet meet your your KK: wife Shelley? When did you know she was the one? DP: I met Shelley at Rand McNally, I was her supervisor. We went out a few times and we both knew that we were always going to be together. When I was being transferred to the East Coast I asked her come with me and she did, we’ve been together ever since.
DP: They might be surprised to know how much I love to spend time in the kitchen cooking. I probably do 90% of the cooking in our household, and it is how Shelley has said I won her over when on one of our early dates I made a fabulous dinner with Filet Mignon, braised asparagus spears, and twice baked potatoes for her. I really enjoy trying new dishes from almost any cuisine, and there’s nothing better than fresh made pasta. I love making that. Saving for College
A 529: An Account Specifically Made For College Savings Having children changes everything. Suddenly you’re focused on their future as well as yours. Most families want to do everything to help their children succeed, and one way is to pay for some or all of college. Let’s explore one way to save for college:
Prerequisite: Like taking a 100 level course before the 300 level course, there is a prerequisite to hit before saving for college. First, take care of yourself get comfortable with your emergency and retirement savings. After all, your child can take loans for college, you can’t take a loan for retirement. Also, most would rather pay off student loans than pay for you in your old age (trust us, we see both circumstances). If you aren’t comfortable with your retirement savings yet, review our previous article for Evanston Woman.
529 Plans College Savings Plans: If you believe you are ready to save for college, the best option is a 529 college savings plan. Why? Because any yearly investment growth is not taxed; additionally, the growth isn’t taxed if you withdraw it to use for education. That’s right, you never pay taxes on the investment growth if used for education. Another advantage of 529 College Savings Plans: if you live in Illinois, 14

you can get an Illinois income tax deduction for contributions of up to $10,000 per year ($20,000 per couple) to one of the Illinois sponsored plans. The Illinois Bright Start plan has solid investments and low costs. It is a good option for most people in Illinois. That said, each state has a 529 plan, and they don’t limit your student’s college choices. So you could, for example, live in Illinois contribute to a plan in Nevada (you would not get an Illinois tax deduction) and pay for college in Delaware. With these plans, you open an account as the owner and contribute money for a beneficiary (your child). You then invest your contributions from several choices offered within the plan. One way to approach this decision is using the age-based mutual funds offered in all plans. 529 FAQs: Extra money – If you have extra money in a 529 (a good problem), you have options: You can change the beneficiary of the account to a relative (normally from one child to another).
You can save it for a child’s graduate school. You can withdraw the money, but you will pay taxes on investment growth AND a 10% penalty. Scholarships – You can withdraw the amount of a scholarship without penalty (you still pay taxes on the investment growth). Or you can use the money for room and board and other qualified expenses. Financial Aid – Yes, a 529 plan reduces your child’s aid eligibility. However, when the assets are in your name, it reduces aid only by a maximum of 5.64% of the account value.
What else should I know? There are two types of 529 plans: prepaid tuition plans and college savings plans. Hoops, Studs or Dangles There are many types of earring styles available, making it difficult to choose what to wear, and even harder to decide what to purchase when picking a pair of earrings for the perfect gift. Should the earrings dangle and catch people’s attention? Should the earrings be understated, small and close to the ear? If I go for a hoop, how large is too large? The number of options can be as overwhelming as the opinions that are available on this subject. If you are choosing the perfect earrings for a special occasion, give yourself time while getting dressed to try on a few options. Look in the mirror after your hair is styled, to make sure you are seeing the right balance of impact and subtlety you are going for. They should catch the eye, but not detract from your overall look. There are no rules about when to choose a hoop, a stud or a dangle, but it’s important that the chosen earrings do not compete or clash with the necklace that is worn. When choosing a really dramatic earring, in any style category, the loudest version can always safely be paired with no necklace at all, bearing in mind that it’s easier for a necklace to compete with an outfit than your earrings. If you are making the decision on which style of earrings to purchase as a gift, ask for help, and have someone try them on so you can see them on someone. Then, try and imagine the earrings on the recipient to see if you think that’s an attractive look. A gift does not need to be a carbon copy of something the person 16

already owns. The gift of jewelry is a sentiment that says “this made me think of you”, and no one can have too many earring styles in their life. Choosing the right earrings for work, however, can be less of a tricky decision, and more of a very dull business. Conservative styles such as stud earrings and tiny hoops can be a safe choice if flash and flare are not appropriate for the work atmosphere, but mix-matching these can add a little spice to an otherwise ordinary accessory choice. A small, sparkly aquamarine stud in one ear and the same size white pearl in the other ear may not catch everyone’s attention around you, but the pay off you will enjoy comes from the feeling of making a fun accessory decision on what would be just an ordinary Tuesday. How large is too large? The question of the ages in the hoop department! Size does not matter, but how they hang on the ear absolutely does. No matter how attractive the earring, if it pulls the lobe down in a stressed or wrinkled way, this will take away from the attractiveness of the earring, and even cause discomfort while wearing them. If the hoop is large, but sits nicely on the lobe and doesn’t create any drag or pull downwards, try the next size larger and see if the same is true. Just go for it! LIFE IS SHORT. Wear the hoops. Studio SLK is a small minority minority owned and operated business. I am able to make a difference by supporting other small businesses. Once a month, Studio SLK host a Pop Up Shop where small businesses get the opportunity to showcase their work, get recognized , and consumers are able to support them. We also partner with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Chi Omega Chapter ( Soles for Souls, Eye Glass Collection ) , ( The Ivy Pearl Foundation( sponsoring signature event “Casino Royale since 2017)Inc., Womens Club Of Evanston ( Dreams Delivered Prom Boutique), Northwestern University ( Art of Black Hair Care) just to name a few. We are continuously making a difference one way or another.
My Husband and I have been married for almost 16 years and for that to work, it takes love, respect, understanding, nurturing , patience and giving each other space to develop into ones true self. We do our best to have date nights even if it means simply relaxing on the couch and watching a movie and We also travel as much as possible.

W
ould you like to learn how to move from feeling closed off or slightly curious about planning for death to feeling more open and enlightened about the choices you have? I have been involved in caring for the dying for over 30 years. I’ve studied the topic in school and in seminars. I am not afraid to “go there” with people and have followed my path to help those in need. I have in a sense befriended death because I have lived professionally and personally around it.
I have witnessed the pain and suffering of people who haven’t had the chance to plan for the day they end up in the hospital. I’ve felt the difficulty families have in making decisions when they really do not know what to do and if they are making the right call by continuing with life support. There is an entire generation of baby boomers (including me) who are getting a little too close for comfort to their own mortality. And you know what? I understand. I get it. After the loss of my Dad and one of my dear friends, I formally completed my living will and have been inspired to help others with theirs. Preparing your advanced directives is a process you can grow through. It allows you to examine your priorities, your hopes and wishes for yourself and your family, and a way to protect yourself and family in uncertain times. Learning about choices, making your decisions and talking about them with your friends and family enables you to breathe a little easier and inspire others to do the same. Imagine how that would be. You get to decide what “living” really means to you and what you would consider a “good” death. An advance directive package includes a personalized review of your current and future health concerns, a designation of power of attorney for healthcare, a complete advance directive outlining your decisions regarding life support, comfort care and after death planning and up to four hours of personal consultation.

Considering A Divorce Before Retirement

ndividuals over the age of 50 and approaching retirement may begin to consider their options for a major lifestyle change. The rate for couples choosing to go ahead with a “gray” divorce has increased twofold since the 1990s, based on studies conducted by the Pew Research Center.
Some couples may decide that dissolving a long-term marriage allows each individual to pursue his or her own goals without any restrictions. Financing a newly single lifestyle, however, may require dividing a variety of assets during a divorce proceeding. Illinois divides a couple’s property under its equitable distribution system. As reported by Reader’s Digest, the court divides everything by what it considers fair or “equitable.” From the family court’s viewpoint, all properties and assets obtained during a marriage belong to both individuals, but they should not expect an equal or 50-50 division. Splitting Property Between Two Spouses Some factors a judge considers when determining how to split property fairly include each spouse’s age, health and ability to generate income. An individual who will rely upon financial support or alimony may decide that selling property

and splitting the proceeds is fairer. Negotiating the sale of properties and splitting proceeds between two ex-spouses may, however, require several discussions before finalizing a divorce through the court. Requesting A Payout From A Retirement Plan Some individuals may need to determine how to “cash-out” from a spouse’s employer-sponsored retirement plan. An individual has the right to a portion of a working spouse’s pension plan including a 401(k). As reported by Kiplinger magazine, federal law requires that a spouse request a qualified domestic relations order from an employer during the divorce procedure. An individual may request a percentage of the plan or a set dollar amount of a spouse’s workplace retirement fund.
