The city has always had a reputation of having productive conversations based on race and fairness. Therefore, I watch black businesses grow here as Evanstonian’s know the secret that Evanston is a great place to live and raise kids.

In this issue of EvanstonMan, we shine the light on three of the retail game changers in Evanston. Game changing men who saw a need and created the opportunity to make a difference by raising the bar in fashion and jewelry. We invited Joseph Meyers (Ten Thousand Villages), Ira Rose (Cottage Jewelers) and John Liberty (Gracie’s) to share their profiles. They each run one of the boutique shops that make Evanston worth driving to. The culture provides that upper tier feel while also presenting a welcoming environment. In this issue we partnered with the Evanston Fire Department and will assist in its efforts to find more recruits. Evanston prides itself in creating true efforts to find diverse candidates. So through our email lists and media marketing we continue that legacy.

LG’s New 8K TV BY ROBERT ROSS
ike opening a window to a panoramic landscape, the new LG Signature OLED 88ZX—debuted at the 2020 CES in Las Vegas and recipient of a 2020 CES Innovation Award—brings important industry firsts to the category of state-of-the-art television. For viewers who appreciate size, the LG is the world’s largest OLED TV, with an ultra-large 88inch screen, and has plenty of high-tech behind the remarkable picture. Developed and produced by LG, the Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED), which greatly enhances clarity and resolution, produces a display that is brighter, with outstanding black levels, higher contrast and faster refresh rates than the ubiquitous Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) flat panel screen technology commonly used in today’s TVs and computer monitors. Advanced 8K Ultra High Definition (7680 pixels × 4320 pixels) offers the highest resolution; 33 million self-emitting pixels and 130 million sub-pixels provide four times the resolution of 4K. Do You Have Chronic Pelvic Pain? Here’s a constellation of symptoms guaranteed to make a guy miserable: urinary frequency/ urgency, painful and/or slow urination, perhaps there’s a little dribbling as you walk away from the restroom, and add to that, pain with or after ejaculation. Oh, and throw in some low back pain for good measure. Symptoms might dissipate only to return with a vengeance. Perhaps you notice it is triggered by intense physical or sexual activity, and that stress dramatically worsens your symptoms. You might have a deep ache in a testicle, or you describe a sensation of “a golf ball in the rectum” that just won’t go away. You visit the doc who prescribes antibiotics, perhaps several times. You notice improvement after the first course, but the problem returns. Symptoms wax and wane, never truly resolving, greatly affecting your quality of life. You start to feel anxious and/or depressed anticipating the next bout. What is this phenomenon that literally has a grip on you? Chronic non-bacterial prostatitis (or chronic pelvic pain syndrome) accounts for 90% of all cases of prostatitis according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It is believed that an initial infection may have set the wheels in motion, or perhaps a physical trauma is responsible. Injuries to consider: hard fall to the tailbone, a straddle injury on the crossbar of a bike, or overzealous weight training with loads that are too heavy. As a result from the injury, pelvic muscles spasm and inhibit circulation. Besides antibiotics, common medical treatments include antiinflammatory medications and alpha blockers. THE THOROUGH YET GENTLE FACE WASH THAT WE CAN’T STOP USING
It’s easy to think about your face wash as the least important part of your skincare routine. Cleansers don’t stay on your face for very long, and as a category, they tend to be a lot less expensive than the hyaluronic acid moisturizers and Vitamin C night creams that get so much attention. But I’d argue that your cleanser is every bit as important as the rest of the products you put on your skin, because it sets the stage for everything else that follows it. Of late, I’ve been using Plant Apothecary’s excellent cleanser, called simply Wash Your Face, and I’ve found that it’s thorough enough to make my naturally oily skin feel clean, but so gentle that it doesn’t feel like my face has been sapped of its acid mantle when I’ve finished using it.

Wash Your Face has a texture that’s somewhere between Aesop’s Amazing Face Cleanser and Glossier’s Milky Jelly Cleanser. It’s not quite a gel, but it’s elastic enough that it does foam a little bit. This is all down to its ingredients: It features aloe, alongside sunflower seed oil, olive oil, jojoba oil and a battery of other natural ingredients. Most of them are derived from USDA Certified Organic sources, and while I’m not above using a chemical-infused skincare product here and there, I do like having the right tool for the right job. In my case, I’ve found that this cleanser is a great accompaniment to the rest of my routine— and, most importantly, it makes my skin balanced and healthy.

Ira Rose
fter returning from a trip to India, Ira Rose, the owner of Cottage Jewelry, had become intrigued with the beautiful gems and crafting of jewelry across the countryside of India. He bought various bracelets, necklaces and gemstones and returned to the states and sold these wonderful items at flea markets and art fairs.
Cottage Jewelry opened its doors in Evanston in 1975 as a small jewelry store in an old Pure Oil Gas Station building which resembled a small cottage. Today Cottage Jewelry is a thriving business on the corner of Chicago Ave. and Dempster St. Cottage Jewelry is a fine jewelry store specializing in engagement rings, designer jewelry, pearls, sterling silver and has a large selection of Antique and Estate Jewelry. Cottage Jewelry is also a center for custom made jewelry and has a Gemologist on staff. Cottage Jewelry has been happily serving three generations of customers from Chicago and the North Shore. The commitment to customer service and good value is first and foremost at the store.

The nature of the business has changed over the past 47 years and Ira has kept up with the times. The store has been recently remodeled and Cottage Jewelry is selling a vast array of both Natural Diamonds and Lab Created Diamonds as well as many other types of gems and metals to keep up with current trends. Cottage Jewelry also buys unwanted and estate jewelry. Ira has a saying, “If you’re not wearing it sell it or let us make it into some thing you will love!”. When not at work Ira enjoys spending time with his family, including his two chocolate labs. You will often find the dogs at the store to greet you. He enjoys traveling, meditating, and volunteering his business skills to charitable ventures. This brings him much joy and has provided him an opportunity to follow his passion for service, gratitude and the opportunity to spending time with his family, 2 daughters and 2 dogs

In 2012, restless to try something new, John considered several franchise opportunities, but nothing seemed quite right. He was looking for a sign to point the way to his next venture when he found it two blocks from his Evanston home and in an area he knew and loved: a For Lease sign in the window at 1939 Central St. in Evanston. Formerly a women’s wear store, the space was completely built out. He signed the lease within 48 hours and headed to L.A. the next day for a buying trip. John opened Gracie’s on November 30, 2012. A lot has changed from his early days in retail. John takes cues from Gracie’s customers, who give him feedback on everything from fabric care, price, looks and styles. He listens, and he values and attempts to honor their feedback. “I only buy what my customers tell me they are looking for. It’s as simple as that,” he said. “Occasionally, I try something new to mix things up just for the sake of variety. So far, so good.” John isn’t done exploring his creative side and has taken up abstract painting at the Evanston Art Center. Come meet John at Gracie’s, 1939 Central St., Evanston, where you’ll often find his pup, Freddie, sleeping under one of the display tables or awake and eager to greet you.

John Liberty
ohn Liberty, owner of Gracie’s on Central Street in Evanston, got an early start to his retail career. His grandparents owned a combination jewelry store and flower shop on the south side of Chicago and “put him to work” when he was just 6 years old. He learned his first lesson in retail when he sold a bunch of tulips at the wholesale price. His grandparents sat him down and explained the facts of store ownership.
John would go on to obtain Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Urban Planning. After graduation, he headed to Lake Tahoe, where he figured he’d work on a mountain while doing some skiing before putting his education to good use and finding a “real” job. But Tahoe hadn’t seen a significant snowfall, and there were no jobs. Instead, John was hired as a salesperson at a men’s and women’s store located in the lobby of Harrah’s Hotel and Casino. He put his childhood retail experience to use and soon was promoted to a junior-buying position for men’s wear and then to a senior position. He also bought men’s wear for the company’s outdoor shop (think Evanston’s Uncle Dan’s with skis). After three years of skiing and working retail, John returned to Chicago and joined a consulting company that helped retailers with profitability by implementing finely attuned buying plans. He spent 11 years as a consultant before impulsively buying out one of his clients, Handle with Care, in Chicago’s Old Town. During his 17 years of ownership, sales increased six-fold. After selling the store in 2008, John returned to consulting. He also successfully completed his Teacher Training at Yogaview and now teaches Gentle Yoga and Multi-Level Yoga at Evanston Athletic Club.

Considering A Divorce Before Retirement
I
ndividuals over the age of 50 and approaching retirement may begin to consider their options for a major lifestyle change. The rate for couples choosing to go ahead with a “gray” divorce has increased twofold since the 1990s, based on studies conducted by the Pew Research Center.
Some couples may decide that dissolving a long-term marriage allows each individual to pursue his or her own goals without any restrictions. Financing a newly single lifestyle, however, may require dividing a variety of assets during a divorce proceeding. Illinois divides a couple’s property under its equitable distribution system. As reported by Reader’s Digest, the court divides everything by what it considers fair or “equitable.” From the family court’s viewpoint, all properties and assets obtained during a marriage belong to both individuals, but they should not expect an equal or 50-50 division.

Negotiating the sale of properties and splitting proceeds between two ex-spouses may, however, require several discussions before finalizing a divorce through the court. Requesting A Payout From A Retirement Plan Some individuals may need to determine how to “cash-out” from a spouse’s employer-sponsored retirement plan. An individual has the right to a portion of a working spouse’s pension plan including a 401(k). As reported by Kiplinger magazine, federal law requires that a spouse request a qualified domestic relations order from an employer during the divorce procedure. An individual may request a percentage of the plan or a set dollar amount of a spouse’s workplace retirement fund.
Splitting Property Between Two Spouses Some factors a judge considers when determining how to split property fairly include each spouse’s age, health and ability to generate income. An individual who will rely upon financial support or alimony may decide that selling property

Saving for College
A 529: An Account Specifically Made For College Savings Having children changes everything. Suddenly you’re focused on their future as well as yours. Most families want to do everything to help their children succeed, and one way is to pay for some or all of college. Let’s explore one way to save for college:
Prerequisite: Like taking a 100 level course before the 300 level course, there is a prerequisite to hit before saving for college. First, take care of yourself get comfortable with your emergency and retirement savings. After all, your child can take loans for college, you can’t take a loan for retirement. Also, most would rather pay off student loans than pay for you in your old age (trust us, we see both circumstances). If you aren’t comfortable with your retirement savings yet, review our previous article for Evanston Woman.
529 Plans College Savings Plans: If you believe you are ready to save for college, the best option is a 529 college savings plan. Why? Because any yearly investment growth is not taxed; additionally, the growth isn’t taxed if you withdraw it to use for education. That’s right, you never pay taxes on the investment growth if used for education. Another advantage of 529 College Savings Plans: if you live in Illinois, you can get an Illinois income

tax deduction for contributions of up to $10,000 per year ($20,000 per couple) to one of the Illinois sponsored plans. The Illinois Bright Start plan has solid investments and low costs. It is a good option for most people in Illinois. That said, each state has a 529 plan, and they don’t limit your student’s college choices. So you could, for example, live in Illinois contribute to a plan in Nevada (you would not get an Illinois tax deduction) and pay for college in Delaware. With these plans, you open an account as the owner and contribute money for a beneficiary (your child). You then invest your contributions from several choices offered within the plan. One way to approach this decision is using the age-based mutual funds offered in all plans. They have funds for children of various ages (e.g. funds for children aged 0-2 or 3-5), which are great, simple options if you don’t feel comfortable making complex investment decisions.
529 FAQs:
Extra money – If you have extra money in a 529 (a good problem), you have options: You can change the beneficiary of the account to a relative (normally from one child to another). You can save it for a child’s graduate

school. You can withdraw the money, but you will pay taxes on investment growth AND a 10% penalty. Scholarships – You can withdraw the amount of a scholarship without penalty (you still pay taxes on the investment growth). Or you can use the money for room and board and other qualified expenses. Financial Aid – Yes, a 529 plan reduces your child’s aid eligibility. However, when the assets are in your name, it reduces aid only by a maximum of 5.64% of the account value.
What else should I know?
There are two types of 529 plans: prepaid tuition plans and college savings plans. We find prepaid tuition plans restrictive and normally recommend savings plans (which we described earlier). Born and raised in Minneapolis, MN, Chef Matthew Wilde’s interest in the culinary world was sparked at a young age. The son of an avid hunter, fisherman, and gardener, Mathew Wilde has always held a deep appreciation for fresh, locally grown produce and ingredients. Which ultimately fueled his interest in the world of culinary arts. Chef Matthew Wilde graduated in 2000 with honors from the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Minneapolis. Shortly after he traveled to Le Petit Pigeonnier in Chinon, France where he learned classic techniques and supercharged his passion for food. After returning home, Wilde brought his culinary methods and skills to a variety of fine dining establishments including Dakota Jazz Club, Lord Fletchers, Fhimas and La Belle Vie, where he worked under James Beard Award winner, Tim Mckee. In 2007, Chef Matthew Wilde moved to Chicago and engulfed himself in the city’s progressive dining scene. While taking on numerous chef roles in some of Chicago’s hottest restaurants including 312, American Junkie, Black Bull, and Hubbard Inn, just to name a few, he became a notable “chef to watch”. In the fall of 2019, Chef Matthew Wilde joined the leading team at Whiskey Thief Tavern, sharing his exceptional craftsmanship in the kitchen. His creativity and passion has led the way to new fare that has Evanston buzzing. Locals can indulge juicy burgers including the ever popular Bison Burger redesigned with wild mushrooms, black truffle and aged swiss cheese, while enjoying new whimsical twists on America’s comfort food such as Chicken and Waffles, blended with apples, scallions and spices served in waffle cones. he’s on her home field in Evanston talking with a group gathered to hear her story and find out how she’d do things if she were to land her dream job as Cook County State’s Attorney and replace Kim Foxx.
“I am passionate about the criminal justice system,” she tells the diverse audience. “It’s a place where the law counts, where public safety and justice coexist, where we have the power to hold violent people accountable, and the discretion to give non-violent people second chances.” More, who beat breast cancer earlier in the decade and says the “life-is-too-short” episode inspired her to follow her dream no matter the risks, doesn’t mince words about her plans if she is elected State’s Attorney. She believes that the system is tilted in favor of the rich, the famous and the politically connected.

Her views were formed early in life. The family lived in Evanston and she is a product of ETHS. Mom graduated from Northwestern and taught school. Dad was a lawyer who delighted in having his daughter at his side while he advocated in court for his clients, often giving voice to defendants in the criminal system. “The first time I saw my Dad making an argument, I knew I was going to be a lawyer,” she says. “And when I graduated from Georgetown Law and landed a job in the state’s attorney’s office, I knew right then I wanted to be the top prosecutor.” More, an experienced state and federal felony trial lawyer who has managed and won cases against murderers, rapists, and armed robbers, says the State’s Attorney isn’t charging cases, and the consequences can be devastating. “We’re engaged in ‘catch and release,’ a phrase used by law enforcement to describe how they apprehend gunwielding carjackers, for example, and six-hours later they are back on the streets. Murder suspects are out on electronic monitoring in alarming numbers, and Sheriff Tom Dart doesn’t know where half of them are.” “Foxx announced to gangs that she won’t charge thieves with a felony unless they steal more than $1,000 worth of merchandise from local stores. A Night at the Blind Pig Speakeasy An Evening to Enrich Evanston’s History
January of 1919, the Prohibition Amendment to the Constitution went into effect. Evanston was already the epicenter for the temperance and prohibition movements, modeling and influencing national trends and opinions. In this centenary year, the Evanston History Center turns its summer gala into an opportunity for the community not only to view the “Dry Evanston: The Untold Story” exhibit, but to experience a little of the Prohibition Era vibe as our history comes alive!
