EVANSTON MAN MAGAZINE

EVANSTONMAN Magazine is proud to innaugerate our first issue with Steve Pemberton as EVANSTONMANs -Man of the Month. The main

reason we picked Steve Pemberton is because he epitomizes that excellence EVANSTONMAN Magazine will exemplify. Steve was a forgotten child, abused and neglected, kept under the thumb of a punishingly cruel foster family in Massachusetts. Through sheer force of will, he decided to get revenge on the family that told him he was worthless by setting his sights on the highest of achievements. That single-minded drive helped him graduate from Boston College, and eventually find a wife, have children — and become a top executive at companies such as Monster.com and Walgreens. Now a human resources executive for Globoforce, Pemberton, 50. His personal accomplishments are too numberous to place in this article space so you will have to go to Evanstonman.com for more of his incredible story. His whole life, he’d seen people avert their eyes from situations that are difficult or make them wince. But when his son asked him about his past, he thought he owed his children the truth. It was complicated, and they were young, so he wrote a book about the horrors he endured as a child, how he uncovered his identity and how he was able to eventually piece together the life he was told he could never have. Pemberton imagined the book would sit on the family shelf for future generations to read a chapter every now and then. (For More go to Evanstonman.com)

The People Voted For Another Billionaire?Whats Next?

EVANSTON MAN SAT DOWN WITH JB PRITZKER 01 Tell the readers- Who you are and your position. I’m a husband and father of two great kids. I grew up in a home where my parents taught me to fight for social and economic justice, and I’ve spent my life doing just that. 02 What is JB Pritzkers Personal Position For two decades, I’ve been a national advocate for early childhood education, providing childcare and preschool for Illinois children and organizing the White House Summit on Early Childhood Education for President Obama. I helped over 200,000 children in low-income school districts receive school breakfast. I’ve fought bigotry as the chair of the bipartisan Illinois

Human Rights Commission and leading the building of the Illinois Holocaust Museum. I led efforts to turn Chicago into a technology startup hub and founded 1871, North America’s top startup incubator that has created over 7,000 jobs. I ran for governor because the values that I’ve fought for my entire life are under assault and I believe I had the record of accomplishments, vision, and leadership that Illinois needed. 03 Why another Billionaire for Governor? This race was a matter of values, and Donald Trump and his partner in Springfield, Bruce Rauner, are trying to destroy many of the things I’ve spent my life fighting for. Bruce Rauner has decimated public education, slashed funding for social services, and cut healthcare for working families, and we can’t afford four more years of his failure. I’m running because everything I care about is under siege, and we need to fight to

defend our values and move this state forward. 04 People are moving out of Illinois in great numbers- Name three things you think might be the cause. What will you do to stop this? Instability, mismanagement, and disinvestment are the top reasons people are leaving Illinois. People have uprooted themselves and their families in search of good paying jobs, a stable educational environment, a fairer tax system, and a state with a plan for economic development and opportunity. Unfortunately, Bruce Rauner’s fiscal mismanagement and manufactured 736-day budget crisis blocked critical investments in higher education, human services, and economic development in some of our most economically challenged communities. We can reverse outmigration if we provide workers, children, and families with the tools they need for success – like quality, equitable public education, stable and affordable higher education, wage growth, and job opportunities. That’s why, as Governor, I’ll remain committed

to creating jobs and economic opportunity, expanding healthcare, and investing in quality education, including universal preschool and quality childcare. 05 Scott Walker is a Republican who is very near and has one of the states with the lowest unemployment rate. What policies will you implement to close the gap between Illinois and states with the lowest unemployment and poverty rates? I have put forward real plans for improv-

03

06 What can we do to assist the homeless population? Bruce Rauner’s 736-day manufactured budget crisis caused lasting damage to our human service infrastructure, including funding for homelessness prevention services. I will reverse that disinvestment and support full funding for homelessness prevention. I will also support Permanent Supportive Housing, transitional housing, and job training and job placement services. 08 Any policy programs involving entrepreneurship?

Why Another Billionaire

ing Illinois’ economic climate, including a five-point plan to create jobs throughout the state, a plan to lower healthcare costs for small businesses, and a plan to foster inclusive economic growth for every community in Illinois. The best long-term incentive Illinois can offer to bring businesses to our state is making sure we double down on our most attractive feature: our dedicated and talented workforce. But there’s nothing that drives businesses away from Illinois more than the instability caused by Bruce Rauner’s failure to propose a balanced budget, and the 736-day devastation of human services meant to strengthen Illinois families. If we want to create jobs, we must work together to rebuild from the damage done by Rauner. To attract businesses from other states and encourage existing Illinois businesses to grow, we must stabilize our economy and invest in our people. We must commit to investing in quality public education that ensures employers in Illinois have access to a large, skilled workforce and that sets our children on a path to success from cradle to career.

My plan for Illinois jobs includes a focus on small businesses by providing access to capital and training, particularly focusing on our state’s forgotten communities. My plan would also invest in economic development projects and infrastructure with a comprehensive 21st Century Capital Bill,

entrepreneurs to help build true wealth and prosperity in black and brown communities. The plan will help reverse decades of systemic disinvestment by expanding access to capital for small businesses, diversifying the pipeline of workers into building trades and contractors, and expanding youth employment opportunities. And my criminal justice reform plan would work to end mass incarceration and imprisonment, getting Illinois communities the support they need to thrive. My plan would legalize marijuana and modernize sentencing, reduce recidivism and re-entry by removing economic barriers, reform our juvenile justice system, and treat gun violence like a public health epidemic.  10 Thoughts on Governor Rauner statement of “what he’s done best for Black business” Bruce Rauner fabricated a track record of standing up for the black community when he’s been nothing short of a failure. While Rauner pays lip service, Illinois’ black unemployment rate is the highest in the nation. That’s after Rauner’s 736-day budget crisis

07Views on the legacy of Rauner? Failures, successes. and invest in higher education, lifting up community colleges and universities as economic hubs. By implementing my plan and stabilizing state government, I’m confident we can support entrepreneurs and small business owners and create good-paying jobs throughout our state.

crushed small businesses, decimated social services, reduced access to child care assistance for working families, and forced anti-violence programs to freeze operations.

09 What significant accomplishments have you completed that impacted black people since you’ve been running for Governer? I’m was proud to run on real plans to move every community in Illinois forward by investing in education, creating jobs, and expanding healthcare for working families across the state. Now that I an Governor, my plan for economic inclusion will support minority

The new 935 relies on a twin-turbo 3.8-liter six-cylinder that Porsche says is largely identical to the engine found in the 911 GT2 RS. This engine can put out a 700 horsepower, just like the aforementioned GT2 RS. Mated to its engine is a seven-speed PDK gearbox transmission. As for the foundation of the car, it’s based on the incredibly capable 911 GT2 RS sports car. Unlike the 911 GT2 RS, however, this new race car has a long and sweeping body that’s filled with details many enthusiasts would appreciate Fans of the classic Porsche 935 can rejoice because a new version of the iconic car has been released. The car’s design was inspired by the 935/78 “Moby Dick” that was in production in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. “This spectacular car is a birthday present from Porsche Motorsport to fans all over the world,” says Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser, Vice President Motorsport and GT Cars. I’M NOT HERE TO TRY TO GET YOU EXCITED ABOUT FASHION

’M HERE TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND the power of a more thoughtful wardrobe. From the simple pleasure it gives a woman to look at you to how you

feel about yourself and how you are perceived by others. As adults we should know better than to judge people by their appearance. Well that takes work ,

undo what our minds do that naturally. that tends to define a man’s wardrobe but this doesn’t mean that it has to be boring. It also doesn’t mean that you’re off the hook from trying new things. In this issue I offer some simple ideas taken from the runways of the 2018 Men’s Fall/Winter collections to help give you a little nudge in the right direction.

For simple layering ideas look no further than this season’s collection by John Varvatos. The palette was neutral but rich and full of

LAYERING

Start small by adding a lightweight printed scarf. As the weather gets cooler layer a luxurious knit zip hoodie or lightweight down vest under a blazer.
