This Election Issue was a thrill to publish. As you read through the magazine, you will find some insight into the 2021 city elections. Evanston Magazine is honored to endorse Darlene Cannon as 2nd Ward Aldermanic Candidate. Cannon’s commitment to her community is outstanding. Her experience in working with community members goes over and beyond. She is an amazing leader, graceful heart, and ready to provide the community with support.

As we say goodbye to the old council, “Thank you” for working with Alderman Robin Simmons to pass Reparations for the first time in history. The result of that work is not done which makes the upcoming election extremely important. The next city council will receive the torch and must be able to see the path to complete this endeavor.

February 23, 2021, Evanston’s Primary Election had five candidates running for City Clerk. Two of the five candidates have moved on to the April 6th ballot. I believe either of the two standing candidates understands the strain and the impact Devon Reid (current City Clerk) endured. Evanston Magazine uncovers the most qualified candidate- that didn’t make the cut. We took the time to examine why Misty Witenberg lost in the Primaries for City Clerk. As you read through the feature, you will realize the outstanding citizenship she has contributed and what a loss it is for Evanston.

Comedy is an unpredictable journey of highs, lows, and everything in between, without any patterns or predictability. While the advice to avoid getting too high after a good show or, too low after bad ones is sensible, it’s also easier said than done.

Experiencing a poor performance (or several) can be devastating, but success can also lead to complacency and a lack of preparation for future shows. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that one has figured out the formula for success and become immune to future failure.

But, this is where one is most vulnerable to having a bad show. It’s important to enjoy the high from a successful performance, as it keeps us motivated, but one must also always be aware that every show can go either way, and the thrill of uncertainty is what makes comedy exciting.

Alfa Romeo: Stelvio Quadrifoglio

The new 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio is the fastest Alfa Romeo model on the road, as it can go from 0-to-60 mph in just 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 176 miles per hour. Right behind it is the 2020 Giulia Quadrifoglio, which has a top speed of 191 miles per hour and can go from 0-to-60 mph in 3.8 seconds.

Unsurprisingly, the engine is a straight forward transplant from the Giulia Quadrifoglio. It’s the 2.9-litre twin-turbo with 503bhp and 443lb ft of torque. Peak power comes in at 6500rpm, but the turbocharged torque is on tap between 2500 and 5000rpm.

That gives it plenty of pace, you’ll be pleased to hear: top speed is a distinctly un-SUV-like 176mph, while 62mph comes about in just 3.8 seconds from a standstill thanks to the obvious traction gains of four-wheel drive. That, you may have noticed, is a tenth faster than the lighter Giulia

Normally the car’s Q4 four-wheel drive system directs all of its power to the rear axle, which is to say the correct one, but to maintain stability and traction it can send up to 50 per cent to the front wheels. It’s a live, active system that switches power forward only when needed.

This hot Stelvio gets Active Torque Vectoring as standard. Two electronically-controlled clutches in the rear differential control torque flow to each wheel, letting the car feed the outer wheel more at the limit, tightening the car’s line and ramping-up corner speed to the point where your face might actually come off.

Helping you with all that handling malarkey is ‘perfect’ weight distribution across the two axles. The engine and transmission are mounted as far back as possible, spreading the Quadrifoglio’s not inconsiderable 1830kg kerb weight evenly front to back. Alfa’s patented ‘four-and-a-half-link’ rear suspension helps keep things tidy in the twisties, too.

Alfa Romeo, to its eternal credit, listened to the customers and the critics. The only real changes to the 2020 Giulia were laserfocused on addressing those complaints. We have an in-depth review of the updated interior for you to peruse, but suffice to say, they fixed what needed fixing.

The infotainment system is updated with all-new and substantially improved software. The cheap-feeling rotary controller that went with it has been replaced with a piece that feels as hefty as the price tag commands, and now you can just touch the screen if you’d prefer. The team also carved out some space on the center console for more places to stash your stuff and added an optional wireless phone charger. The shifter is new, as well; it’s now both easier to use and nicer to touch. The steering wheel has been upgraded and gets nicer leather.

While browsing my favorite liquor store, I stumbled upon a new spirit that caught my attention. The salesman explained the price and style of the product, and I decided to give it a try. Now, as a reviewer for Evanston Magazine, I want to share my thoughts on this delectable spirit.

The first thing observed is the luster or sheen which indicates that the cigar is quality. In order to enjoy this cigar I dipped it in my favorite whiskey and gave it a good twist so some of the sweet liquor rubs onto it. With a strong draw I found a very smooth and lightly spicy flavor with a note of whiskey.

When I pinch / squeeze the cigar I discovered that it has no weak spots. Wrapper offered nice flavor and aroma. Smoke picked up in spiciness after the first inch. The cigar had a little note of peppery spice on the finish. The flavors started to bloom around the 1/2 way mark. Peppery notes inchedup a bit, while the nutmeg flavor remained constant. The smoke was very consistent. Some notes of espresso leakedin, but this was primarily a very rich-tasting smoke with dark, spicy tobacco flavors.

Aroma: Earthy and relaxing and nutty

Burn / Ash Quality: Inconsistent at first, but fell into line at about the 3½-inch mark. Ash was granular and a bit loose but stood up to the flame and never loss glow.

Balance Of Flavors: Very good sweet tobacco and Nutmeg

Consistency: Very good.

Retrohale: Very smooth and lightly spicy with a note of whiskey.

Upon first opening the bottle, I noticed a very sweet aroma with hints of vanilla and caramel, but what really stood out was a smooth and spicy smell that reminded me of an oatmeal cookie. After taking a sip, I noticed notes of fruit, honey, caramel, and vanilla, with a strong and warm flavor profile that eventually gave way to the taste of oak, caramel, and honey. While rye was noticeable, it played more of a supporting role in the flavor profile.

This spirit offers a unique and complex flavor profile, with a peppery kick that is balanced out by the sweet and softer tones. What’s even more impressive is that it is competitively priced and offers quality that rivals Bulleit Bourbon. After conducting some research, I discovered that this spirit is sourced, distilled, and bottled by a company owned by a friend, which only adds to its appeal.

In fact, I found several reviews online that echoed my own sentiments. According to Distiller.com, the spirit offers a “silky, delicate body with flavors of black cherry, orange peel, honey, and caramel,” and received a rating of 88/100. Other reviewers noted the spicy kick and smooth finish, as well as the fact that it can be enjoyed both on its own or in a cocktail.

Overall, I highly recommend giving this spirit a try. It offers a unique and complex flavor profile at a competitive price, and the fact that it is sourced and distilled by a friend’s company only adds to its charm.

IAccording to an NYU study, I have only seven seconds before the person across from me makes up their mind about who I Am. Seven seconds to get someone to ask for your number, or be offered the job, or close the deal. only seven seconds. Now, you know me as a dating expert, but I actually started out as a casting director. And in my work, I saw tons of actors who were talented, but couldn’t book a part because they didn’t know who they truly were. What if Melissa McCarthy thought she was a Jenny McCarthy? Or if Taylor Swift was trying to be Beyonce?

The first time I became aware of the principle “of self awareness” was during a theater class in college. Yes, I was a nerdy theater major. We did an exercise that was designed to teach us about our essence, which is basically just a fancy theater term for the way that you present to others physically and emotionally. The way that people perceive you the minute you walk in the room. We walked around the theater waiting for the teacher to call out a student’s name. When that name was said, we were supposed to embody that person’s essence and express how we perceived their energy. I thought I was doing a great job of hiding away the broken misfit inside and parading her around the mask of a discriminating artist. But in an instant, they had all seen behind it when everyone in my class did Dimona, with crossed arms and that look, I had to acknowledge what they were seeing. Who was this critical, uptight girl in black? Was that who I had become?
