RESALE | UNIQUE GIFTING
S
ince 2014, the Main-Dempster Mile has served as a commonwealth for over small 200 businesses in south Evanston and has strengthened community ties for both retailers and customers alike. The walkable neighborhood offers Evanston residents and visitors a variety of unique options for shopping, dining, and entertainment all while supporting their local community. There’s something for everyone in the Main-Dempster Mile district. Restaurants range from high end seafood at Oceanique to traditional Greek and American fare at Cross-Rhodes. The organization includes insurance companies, cafes, specialty shops, law firms, and even a brewery. With special events throughout the year, like Small Business Saturday and the annual sidewalk sale, Evanston residents have an opportunity to come together and support their neighbors. The district recently hosted the Evanston Charity Wine Walk, which brought in over $6500 to benefit Mudlark Theater. “The Wine Walk is special because it gets people into businesses they may not otherwise go, like an auto dealer or a rug repair store,” says Squeezebox Books & Music owner Tim Peterson. “Evanston is a city that has a great civic pride and an extremely strong sense of community,” says Katherine Gotsick, Main-Dempster Mile Executive Director. Besides just shopping, many businesses on the Main- Dempster Mile offer classes and collaborations. At See Jane Sparkle, in addition to shopping for vintage accessories, customers can host a gathering to learn about jewelry design with their friends. “Our Beads & Bubbly parties are perfect for birthdays, bachelorette parties, girls’ night out, or anyone looking for a little special “sparkle” time,” says owner Sara Jane Abbott.

EVAN STON WINE WALK “I’ve been open on Washington Street for over six years and am really enjoying the new energy the Main-Dempster Mile association has brought to the district,” says Malik Turley, owner of Hip Circle Studio and president of the Main-Dempster Mile. Hip Circle Studio offers bellydance, yoga, personal training, as well as specialty workshops such as CampConnect Evanston, in partnership with The Collage Café and See Jane Sparkle. Jaime Leonardi is the co-owner of Stumble & Relish, a gift shop featuring handmade goods with a vintage flair. “The Main Dempster Mile brings local businesses together in a whole new way. We get to work with local artists and independent designers who are our neighbors. We are big proponents of cultivating community and are excited to be a part of this vibrant business district,” she says. “This is my community. I’m serving my childrens’ teachers and schoolmates,” says Eric Young, owner of La Principal and Lucky Platter. La Principal recently opened a window on Custer Ave that serves coffee, churros, breakfast tacos, and other morning essentials right across from the Main Street Metra and El platforms. They host local talent for their Monday Night Music series and partner with other organizations within the Main-Dempster Mile. “Our bread comes from Hewn, our whiskey is supplied by F.E.W. Spirits, and Sketchbook Brewery makes a beer that you can only get at La Principal. We want people to see that the Main-Dempster Mile can provide everything they need,” says Young.
