Reclaim Your Own Power
S
BY LINDY STOCKTON
elf-empowerment. This idea is one that is near and dear to my heart. I am passionate about people having a voice and the power to make choices and decisions. At its core, self-empowerment is, quite simply, another way of describing personal responsibility.
• Shift your language from a victim-ese (I can’t, I don’t know, I don’t matter…. ) to one of success (I can, I will, I’ll figure it out, I matter)
Self-empowerment is not something that someone can give you. It is something you give (or take) for yourself. I know that circumstances can often times leave us feeling as though we don’t belong… that we are on the outside looking in… or that we don’t really make a difference or matter.
• Stop playing the ‘Blame Game’; blaming others only leads to feelings of helplessness
Now more than ever it is critical that we seek ways to reclaim our own power. And perhaps even more importantly, we need to engage with and support each other on this quest.
If you’ve been feeling less than empowered lately, there are some specific steps you can take to transform your outlook... • Identify your personal core values -- - these are the things that drive the decisions you make. The more aligned to your values, the better you feel about your decisions • Banish the word ‘SHOULD’ from your vocabulary; should is usually an expectation others have of you
• Identify small achievable and actionable goals that align with your core values to strengthen that muscle
• Rewrite your script; your story is based in truth, but if it keeps you stuck and unable to move forward it is time to create a new one • Surround yourself with a supportive people who value you and have your best interest at heart Be gentle and courageous. Sustainable transformation is achieved one small change at a time.
You’ve got this. Lindy Stockton After 20 years helping large organizations through transformational change, Lindy now focuses her time on making a difference in people’s lives as the owner/artist/coach of The Collage Cafe. thecollagecafe.com E VA N S TO N W O M A N . C O M 3

Life is not only meant to be lived
Life is to be created BY CHRISTINA TU
I
t was about a year after leaving an unhealthy relationship, graduating college, and not knowing what I wanted to do with my life; was when I saw the movie Eat Pray Love. After I saw the movie something inside my heart started to feel hopeful and I thought I could be just like the heroine in the movie and find myself too. I walked into a Body and Brain center back in 2009 hoping to find the solution to my depression. I had experienced other different yoga practices, but there was something about this particular kind of yoga that I felt attracted to and at the time couldn’t explain what that was; regardless, it resonated with me in more ways than I could ever imagine. When I experienced my first brain wave vibration class, I cried in relief. It was then that I realized how desperate I wanted to feel and move freely. I became very intrigued by the new feeling of hope and I wanted more. So I signed up for a workshop called Finding True Self. After experiencing the workshop, my journey on the path of happiness and inner joy started to unravel slowly and steady. Once the momentum got moving I felt unstoppable. I started to love better, to eat better, to make brighter choices for myself and care more about my well - being. I was determined to make a positive impact on the world and I felt that this particular yoga practice would help me find the solution. I became very passionate and revived my original dream, of creating a more peaceful world, and what this practice helped me realize was that I needed to become the solution.
Today most people walk into a yoga center wanting either to lose weight or to be physically healthy and fit. Which is possible, but to achieve and sustain those goals we need to realize that connecting with our True Self is what needs to be done first. When we connect with our true self, we can harmoniously align our mind and body to achieve our goals. The World Health Organization defines health as, “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” As a Body and Brain yoga center manager my dream is to help every single person who walks through the door see their true potential and inner beauty. How is this possible? Simply by connecting the mind with the body and feeling your own energy. Body and Brain Yoga is a national leader in holistic health and wellness. Invest in your well-being, come to Skokie center and experience a free trial class!

Q
MEGAN DILLOW DIRECTOR OF PILATES: THE BENEFITS OF PILATES How long have you been with CAC/EAC? A: I have been teaching Pilates for 16 years. 10 of these years I have spent teaching at Chicago Athletic Clubs. I became the Director of Pilates for CAC about 3 years ago. Since that time I have taken the reigns of 3 studios; Lincoln Park (LPAC), Bucktown (BAC), and Evanston (EAC). CAC/EAC is comprised of incredibly talented and passionate people from our members to the management team. The best part of working for CAC/EAC is getting to do what you love, with amazing people, every day. Q: Do you have a favorite quote? A: My favorite quote by Joseph Pilates is “10 sessions you start to feel the difference, 20 you see the difference and in 30 you have a whole new body.” The way I interpret that statement is; after your first session, you will stand a little taller and have a little more awareness of your posture and quality of movement. That however will only last a few hours initially. As muscle memory starts to build you will see those qualities extend and last from session to session. You may then find yourself thinking about how you sit in a chair, how you stand or walk, or how you sleep. Once you start applying these principles and concepts into your daily life; that is where the “whole new body” happens. Q: What are the misconceptions about Pilates? A: Few of those misconceptions include; That Pilates is easy; it is only stretching exercises; and it is only for women. Pilates in its entirety is all about the mind and body connection. The more a person focuses on the specific movements and isolation of muscle groups, the more intense the workouts will become. While Pilates is known for increasing flexibility, it is through the exercise techniques and motion that help achieve this flexibility, not just the stretching. The Pilates industry does have a significant amount of women who do find value in the exercise. However, many do not know that Pilates was designed by a man, Joseph Pilates, for recovering soldiers during the 1920’s. These recovering soldiers were in traction, muscle atrophy would be inevitable. Through Josephs carefully designed exercise techniques, soldiers were able to exercise the body and mind, which aided in speeding up the recovery process. Jumping to today, with how the techniques and equipment have evolved; the value of Pilates is now experienced by more than just soldiers! Ranging from those seeking mobility therapy, injury recovery, whole body strengthening, to professional athletes too (#GOCUBS). Q: What is the most important factor or benefits of Pilates? A: Both are mind and body workouts, however, Pilates is based on the anatomy and biomechanics of the body. With Pilates, you are working to achieve strong healthy movement patterns, modifying the exercise for the injuries and limitations one might have. Pilates feels good! When people take a break from Pilates and come back, they always say, “I missed this” and “I need this”. Pilates builds the strength and flexibility simultaneously, we do not tear muscle and rebuild to create bulk. Therefore you will not feel sore or fatigue after the workout. Instead you will feel more connected to your body. Q: Can you combine other workouts with Pilates? A: YES! Absolutely! Not only is it good to combine with other workouts, but applying the Pilates principles will make other workouts more effective and efficient.

“I am so proud of my staff and my team,” Tenore says, “and I love what I do, addressing the human spirit and the brain/body/psyche connection.” When asked if there’s anything wrong with looking old, Tenore says, “Absolutely not! To me, it’s all about quality of life, self care, and self preservation. If you’re confident in your skin and it doesn’t have a negative impact on your quality of life, leave it alone. I see my patients eating right, exercising, getting manicures, getting their hair done, wearing nice clothes…they do their own work to feel good about themselves. Using my scientific background and cutting edge technology, I just complete the painting.”
Upon earning an advanced degree from Harvard University’s School of Public Health, Northwestern University recruited Tenore to help develop its Family Practice Residency Program. Eleven years later, Tenore said to herself, “No one likes the aging process. What can I do to help?” In 2005, she opened her first medical spa. Five years on, Tenore founded FreshSkin Medical Spa & Wellness Center.

Giving Young Adults a Path to Succeed
M
ore than fifteen years ago, Center for Independence co-founders Kay Branz and Jane Doyle came to a realization about the opportunities their daughters would have available to them after high school. The conclusion was stark: the options that their daughters desired and deserved simply did not exist. “To discover that there was really nothing to transition to for young adults with disabilities once they left the school system was breathtakingly eye-opening,” Branz said. “We realized that if there was going to be any opportunity, we’d have to do something.” Since 2002, Center for Independent Futures has supported individuals with disabilities to build full, independent lives. Here in Evanston, the organization offers life skills tutoring, housing options, social activities, and more. Locally and across the country, Center for Independent Futures supports schools, agencies, and family groups to create innovative, person-centered solutions.
At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Evanston, staff member Kathy Lyons shared the organization’s newest partnership with Evanston Township High School: creating employment opportunities for and with young adults with disabilities so they can leave school with bright futures. Made possible by a grant from the Evanston Community Foundation, Lyons’ work focuses on helping students identify their unique skills and interests, then reaching out to employers to determine how these strengths match busi-

ness needs. For individuals with disabilities, employment is a path to income, independence, and inclusion. One of the students working with Lyons, Demetrius Whitehead, shared his experience at the Rotary meeting. Demetrius spoke about his job search and dream of becoming a motivational speaker, leaving the meeting with names of people who could provide him with ideas or support. Making connections, often challenging for individuals with disabilities, is crucial to future success.
On Friday, April 28, Center for Independent Futures celebrates 15 years of supporting individuals to realize their dreams at its signature SPARK gala at the Hilton Orrington in Evanston. To learn more, visit independentfutures.com or call 847-328-2044.

interior is fantastic for indoor play, a highly versatile space capable of six fields of simultaneous play. The owners, who met as traders in Chicago in 1985, were leaders in their kids’ youth sports pursuits. Randy Mayne launched Evanston Youth LaCrosse, and Bill Kindra served as President of Chicago’s Powerstrikers Soccer Club. “Based on our own experiences driving all over the Chicago Metro area to play indoor games each winter,” Kindra says, “we wanted Evanston to have this type of a facility.” Founded primarily on a youth sports platform, Quad Indoor Sports naturally drew the attention of youth soccer, baseball, lacrosse and field hockey organizations. Soon, Quad welcomed men’s, women’s and high school soccer leagues, followed by a Latino soccer league and Loyola University’s varsity soccer team. Working 12-18 hour days, 7 days a week, the owners couldn’t be happier to be here. “The City, and especially Ald. Rainey, are incredibly supportive,” Kindra says. “We’re evolving as we grow, listening to our clientele and what they’d like.” For example, as of January 1 st , the concession stand began serving alcohol, including Evanston’s own Temperance beer.
“Balloon is the real four-letter word around here!” jokes co-owner Bill Kindra, who, with co-owner Randy Mayne, opened Quad in January, 2016.

Literature for All of Us
Celebrating 20 Years of Opening Worlds by Opening Books
K
BY LAUREN BERNDT aren Thomson is the Executive Director and Founder of Literature for All of Us, an organization that provides nurturing, safe book groups for young people who live in under-resourced neighborhoods.
20 years ago, Karen was inspired to create Literature for All of Us after her 15 years as a professional book group leader focusing on women’s literature. She wanted to do something for people who didn’t have a book store or a library right in their neighborhood. Karen learned
about a group of teen mothers in Chicago who were interested in her work. In those early sessions, both she and the participants enjoyed discussing Maya Angelou, Sandra Cisneros, and Zora Neale Hurston. The first book read in a group was Sandra Cisnero’s House on Mango Street. Today, Literature for All of Us serves over 800 people a year through nearly 30 book groups each week. Each session, Literature for All of Us book leaders introduce culturally relevant books and lead discussions with participants. After their conversations, participants have the opportunity to write poetry. “Our work is beautiful because it connects people to their strengths,” Karen said. “Many times we introduce people to reading in a way that they have not been before due to interruptions in their educations. Participants of the book groups discover the ability to use reading and writing as tools.”
