t’s my favorite season of the year, the holidays! Where family and friends gather to create new memories and share our gifts of joy with our social media community. As we prepare for such a fabulous season, I ask each of you, my loyal readers, to shop local. I embrace the convenience of online shopping and appreciate the time it saves me, though this year I will shop local to support our businesses here. As a small business owner, my business is small business; without our small businesses, we would not be Evanston. I challenge each of you to shop at all the wonderful stores on Central Street, in Downtown and on the Main-Dempster Mile to celebrate the uniqueness each store has to offer. I am sure you will find a gift for everyone on your list! As we pull out wrapping paper, ribbon, and the double sided tape, let’s wrap a bow around our small businesses and support them as we bring in the new year!!

WELLNESS
THREE HOLIDAY EATING TIPS WITH D21 FIT STUDIO 1
TRY NOT TO GO TO YOUR HOLIDAY PARTIES/DINNER PARTIES HUNGRY
Have a protein smoothie, a PB&banana sandwich, a banana and almond butter, 3 hard boiled eggs, a turkey or hummus/veggie sandwich, almonds/nuts before you leave. Even if you are going for dinner, if you are on a good path with your health and fitness routine and do not want to eat unhealthy foods during the holidays, make sure you are satiated with good nutrient dense foods BEFORE you enter temptation.
2
REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN LOOK AT THE HOLIDAY’S AS A CELEBRATION OF PEOPLE NOT FOOD
If you are visiting family or friends and you are enjoying the company of the people you are with, stay focused on them and not on the food/alcohol. The holidays were meant to bring people together for a fun evening/day/weekend. Of course you will have some treats and drinks but changing the way you approach the holidays can help prevent weight gain and hangovers!!!
3
BRING YOUR OWN HEALTHY FOOD/TREATS FOR EVERYONE TO ENJOY
Why do you have to bring unhealthy food? Instead, bring some yummy, healthy foods that you like to eat. It is interesting to see how many people will want to eat the healthier, tasty foods if they are offered. You can bring hummus with healthy crackers or veggies, roasted veggies as a side dish or try one of Food Print for Life’s recipes. Enjoy and have a fabulous, healthy holiday season!!! www.d21.fit 4 E VA N S TO N W O M A N . C O M

Spreading Holiday Cheer on Central
BY NETTA KEESOM
W
ith the holiday season fast-approaching, the Central Street business district in North Evanston is preparing its stores for customers. One sentiment shared by the street’s shop owners, “it is a lot of work.”
“It’s charming. It’s mom and pop shops. There’s a uniqueness – a one-of-a-kind feel,” said Rachel Hershinow, owner of Stella Boutique. It is because of this special ambiance that Central Street is so beloved by Evanston residents.
Though it has served as a main artery connecting Evanston’s neighborhoods since the city’s founding in 1872, Central Street represents much more. Frequently cited as a cultural gem, the mile-long stretch represents an era that is increasingly difficult to conjure in the age of on-demand groceries and one-day shipping. “That’s what I love about this street,” says Gretchen Vetter of Tag’s Bakery, “It’s families that know families, and merchants that know families.” It is this feeling of community and camaraderie that makes the intense holiday season worth it for the strip’s dedicated business owners. Even though it is hard work, Patty O’Neill of Perennials loves the holiday season. Her eyes light up as she describes some of the unique finds stowed in the basement, awaiting their time on the store’s main floor. “Our basement is filled to the brim,” says O’Neill, “it’s total chaos, but really fun.” What ultimately makes the stroll down Central Street during the holidays most special is the care with which the shop’s owners treat their customers. “I have a customer who still has to get her gingerbread men decorated the way we used to… because that’s the way her son grew up with them,” Vetter said. Despite the cold weather that inevitably comes with the holidays, Central Street is all about warmth. With the golden lights strung up above, twinkling ornaments to catch the eye, and wafts of cinnamon drifting from the bakeries, shopping on Central Street during the holiday season is a delight––even before you unwrap the presents.
