appy Summer Evanston!! It has been a nice and quiet season. I just completed Leadership Evanston through the Evanston Community Foundation. The 10 month program was an eye opener and gave me a new perspective and lens about our community. If you would like to know more about Leadership Evanston visit evanstonforever.org - Please stay tuned for more features about the wonderful works of Evanston Community Foundation in the upcoming issues of Evanston Woman Magazine.
Issue 2 Volume 9
As quiet as it has been, Evanston has seen a lot of changes within the city. New roads are being paved, new storefronts are opening their doors, and more businesses have been expanding. One landmark I would like to point out is our new Fountain Square. As many of us have beared the route of the construction, I must say this new look has given our city a facelift. We love Evanston for the old buildings, churches, and the history it has created. But, if we do not continue to evolve our community will not be able to gift back to our locals as it should. Hats off to Downtown Evanston, West Village, Central Street and Main-Dempster Mile for working continuously to keep our business and art districts thriving.

Accidental Caregiver Caregiver’s Question:
Q A
I AM SO overwhelmed with trying to balance work, my family and the needs of my mother who has so many health issues. It seems impossible to please her. I try to do the right things, but at the end of the day I’m exhausted. SOMETIMES THERE JUST seem to be enough time in the day to get everything done, but it also sounds like you have a bit of selftalk here as well…and you are not being very kind to you.
Each week, make a list of what you will be doing for your mom. Check off each task as you complete the task. At the end of each week, take stock of all that you’ve accomplished…not what you have NOT accomplished. Compliment yourself. Know it’s OK to be “good enough:” 1. Recognize there’s only so much that one person can do. 2. Delegate by accepting help from friends, family. 3. Appreciate being “Good Enough.” This column was created because I’m often asked many questions by overwhelmed caregivers to older loved ones. As an Aging Life Care Professional I provide Answers, Advocacy and Alternatives to individuals coping with this challenge while maintaining their life responsibilities. Charlotte invites you to send your question info@AccidentalCaregiver.info

The Future of Medicine By Josie Tenore, M.D. FRESHSkin Medical Spa & Wellness Center
F
OR THEPAST SEVERAL decades the practice of medicine has been based on “randomized controlled trials”, “the standard of care” and various other buzzwords that worked on patients for many years. While I have ALWAYS appreciated the “science” of this, I have practiced “logical” medicine for my entire career and I am really happy to see that patients are now jumping on that bandwagon. In the “old days” we recognized that family history [genetics] was the strongest risk factor for the development of diseases like cancer, cardiovascular [heart and artery], diabetes, autoimmune [such as Crohn’s], psychiatric, and even neurological [dementia] diseases. We made some “generalized” attempts at interfering with the effects of the environment on genetics. For example, eat a “healthy diet, exercise, and avoid stress and too much alcohol”. While all of these recommendations remain appropriate, we now have much more robust tools to individualize the risk to a much higher or lower extent. What I mean by that is that with the advent of genetics testing, more specific blood testing, and advanced technology we are much better able to deliver health at the individual level, rather than at the population level. We also have access to improved supplements that can be used in the place of drugs for better health and fewer side effects.
With that we now have much more control over our health, how we age, and even on the diseases that we may be vulnerable to on the basis of genetics. The days of sitting placidly by and stating that it is inevitable are over. Take charge by finding a health care provider who is well versed in these tests and can customize the best health and healthy aging plan for you.
Just because people in your family developed colon cancer and died from it, the same is not necessarily destined for you. We have genetics tests to Be Well and Beautiful! Dr. Josie Tenore see if you carry the gene, colonoscopies that find early signs of disease; stool tests that look at the type of bacteria in your body, and supplements and diet recommendations to change even that. This is just the tip of the diagnostic iceberg. We can do testing to see what type of diet you should be eating, what forms of exercises are better for your health, and so on.

Bucking The Trend With Dr. Tara Troy
Comprehensive Gastrointestinal Health So why is Troy, an Inverness native and Wilmette resident, starting her own practice? “I prefer the intimacy of a small private practice to the larger and less personal medical institutions,” Troy said. “I have thought for a long time that I should focus GI more on prevention with a goal of prescribing the fewest prescriptions because that’s what I have heard from my patients. … I’m responding to what I hear from patients are saying they need and their frustrations, and I’m creating the job that I want.” Troy’s 3,638-square-foot practice will be located just west of the U.S. 41/Lake Cook exit. She said there are no other gastroenterology practices in nearby Deerfield, Northfield, Glencoe, Bannockburn or Winnetka. Troy spent the previous 12 years at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital, where she said 85 percent of her patients were female. Troy said her target audience is 50-year-old women and their 20-year-old daughters. “Many times, the moms’ husbands become her patients as well,” Troy said.
ARA TROY, M.D. loves that she’s bucking the trend by opening her new medical practice, Comprehensive Gastrointestinal Health, in Northbrook on Sept. 1, 2018. Troy, 43, her passion to serve patients was close to her heart as a young child.
T
In addition, her practice will include five full-time and five parttime employees. This will include an in-house dietitian and counselor/psychologist to help target some of the most common gastrointestinal conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome and obesity. There will be an in-office endoscopy suite with little touches like a more palatable colonoscopy preparation and the ability to choose their own music for procedures like colonoscopies to make the experience “as pleasant as possible,” Troy said.
She mother, Martha who was a beloved nurse at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights was her influence to care for others. When Troy was 7 years old, she drew a picture with a caption that read “Someday I wish to be a doctor. I can’t wait till I grow up. And get my first patient.”
“We’re going to have TV’s in every room with PowerPoint slides to educate patients as much as possible,” Troy said. “We want to provide a well-rounded treatment plan and engage with our patients on how they would like to approach their own health issues. With a smaller practice, we will be able to offer our patients more of our time as well.”
Troy gives accolades to her high school teachers at Fremd High School, especially from memorable AP teachers; Richard Bokor (history) and Helen Schersten (English), who helped her find a college with a strong medical background while continuing to nourish her interest in history and literature, both of which have become lifelong passions to serve her well in medicine and patient care.
Troy received her undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and her medical school degree from Rush Medical School. Troy completed her internal medicine residency from the University of Chicago, where she also earned a Gastroenterology and Hepatology Fellowship. Troy said starting a business from scratch has been “a little terrifying but also a little exciting.” She said it wouldn’t have been possible without the tremendous support of her husband, Jon, a pediatrician at Sanders Court Pediatrics in suburban Buffalo Grove and Arlington Heights, and her children: Kyra, 13, and Taylor, 9. Troy said her family has helped her choose office colors and furniture, and Kyra has even assisted with proofreading paperwork and helping her install tech equipment. “I have a family that is fully on board and supportive, and that’s a huge part of this,” Troy said.
Of the doctors in Troy’s field, gastroenterology, only 12.9 percent are female, according to Becker’s Healthcare. The publication also notes that only 23 percent of all female physicians work in a private practice. And, according to the AMA’s Physician Practice Benchmark Surveys, less than half of all physicians are practice owners for the first time ever.

Pelvic Floor Muscle Fitness: The Truth About Kegels
The pelvic floor muscles (PFMs) are a group of muscles that form a “hammock” at the bottom of the pelvis. PFMs support the organs of the pelvis, thus helping to improve bladder and bowel control, and are essential in sexual sensation and satisfaction. They are important stabilizers of the pelvis and spine, and are a key part of our “core.” When these muscles are fit, flexible, and healthy, we can enjoy the following benefits: Good bladder and bowel control Enhanced sexual satisfaction (= better orgasms!) Spine and pelvic stability Decreased back and pelvic pain

Although kegels seem like “no-brainer” exercises, they must be done correctly to get results. However, research shows when given a basic written handout on “kegels,” 50% of women do not perform the exercises correctly! Dot is a social enterprise selling menstrual cups one-for-one: for every Dot Cup sold we donate one to a woman or girl in need, allowing her to take control of her days and prioritize what matters to her during ALL times of the month. We launched on International Women’s Day in March and the response has been incredible. People love their Dot Cups and I feel so humbled to get to help people embrace a natural and beautiful part of their anatomy while changing the life of a woman at the same time. This summer, in partnership with World Vision, we will hold our first Dot Drop in Zambia, donating 1,500 Dot Cups to women and girls. To follow along, check us out on instagram @dotcup or visit our website dotforall.com. Photos: © Dot International 2018 and © World Vision 2018

In 2011 I was introduced to (and fell in love with) a menstrual cup, a medical-grade silicone cup, worn in place of tampons, that collects menstrual fluid instead of absorbing it. One cup can be worn for up to 12 hours and used for up to 10 years, making it extremely environmentally friendly, economical, and convenient! Shortly afterwards through a trip to Kenya with World Vision, I was introduced to the plight of women and girls without access to menstrual products. The problem and it’s solution collided in my heart and hands and the idea for Dot was born.
You’re Invited To Share Learn & Gather
Imagine what your life would look without products like tampons and pads. How would you prevent leaks? Would you risk embarrassment and go to school or work? Millions of women and girls around the world are faced with this unfair decision each month, and as a result, miss about 60 days of school or work each year. Many young girls fall so far behind in school that they just drop out, marry young, and the cycle of under-educated and thus undervalued women continues. Education is power, and menstrual cups are transferring the power back to the women who have lost it.

MEGHAN MARKLE A TRUE PRINCESS OF EVANSTON
A
S A WILDCAT [1999 to 2003], Meghan joined the sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma that warmly embraced her. She enjoyed the Dance Marathon, and chatted up a storm with Sherman, a local favorite associate that works mid-night shift at Burger King. Markle enjoyed hanging out at local venues, and used a fake ID at the Keg, the club the city closed down for allowing underage drinking in 2013. Markle studied at the School of Communication, and secured an internship at the U.S. embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and studied in Madrid in 2002. Her passion for acting was a slow transition from Deal or No Deal briefcase model to Hallmark movies, Markel’s appearance on Suit as attorney Rachel Zane placed her on the map. Evanston’s Princess was born and raised in Compton with a strong role model, her mother. [As watching her mother’s participation in the wedding, I believe the largest percentage of credit should go to her.] Markel was a product of a divorced couple, with financial hardships. Even before the official release of Prince Harry’s romantic intentions the disrespectful media sources began circulating headlines calling Markel, “(almost) Straight Outta Compton” and scrutinizing her life. A British tabloid published apiece saying the prince might marry into “gangster royalty.” It is common for the media to push hurtful stories no matter how joyous the occasion. Luckily, The royal couple did not succumb to the negativity. The polished Meghan Markle like Diana (the original princess of the people) has been very active in civic and charitable work. Involvement includes Meghan Markle as a counselor for international charity One Young World. In 2016, Markle became a global ambassador for World Vision Canada, traveling to Rwanda for the Clean Water Campaign, the agen-
is on a very exclusive list of American born women who joined the royal family. There has been only one Duke of Sussex, his name was Prince Augustus Frederick and he was not married. This leaves Her Highness, Meghan Markle with the honor of being the first Duchess of Sussex. She has also worked with the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women as an Advocate, Markle identifies as a feminist. In 2018, she was included in Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World”. “Women don’t need to find their voice, they need to be empowered to use it and people need to be urged to listen,” Markle says. She believes that empowering younger women with education will cultivate women who are emboldened to effect change within their communities and on a global level. She is proud to front in center during the #MeToo and Times Up movement, as there is no better time to continue her work and shine a light on women’s rights, feeling empowered. This beautiful, little but resilient girl grew to learn world level poise and married her prince. She stepped into a symbolic horse and carriage as Duchess. She is a real life Cinderella story and it could be that Evanston was that crucial puzzle piece. I am sure Princess Diana is in heaven, pleased with her new daughter in law her Royal Highness Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle. Evanston is proud to be included in her story.
