FROM THE EDITOR

his past month has been an eye opener for me. I decided to take Evanston Woman from profit to non-profit because I felt Evanston Woman is so much bigger than I. We have businesses going under, losing revenue, and trying to stay open with little or no access to capital for advertising and marketing. With these simple resources a business can expand their business model and generate more revenue. Our focus is to create one-on-one relationships between community members and local businesses. My passion is to empower women, non-profit organizations, small and minority businesses by providing media and advertising agency services at little or no cost. EVANSTON Woman Magazine’s goal is to support and create opportunity for non-profit organizations, small owned, and minority businesses through education. • Do you need to grow your business, though have limited capital? • Would you like to make a connection with the community and share your services, but have limited resources? • Would you like to continue learning about how to grow your company with business development classes? • Would you like to network with other leading and growing companies that work with Evanston Woman?

Alim means Scholar or Expert. Therefore, Alim Insurance Brokerage is a proponent of higher education and expertise in our field. We work hard to stay up to date with the most relevant insurance related information.

I know owning your own small business takes money, resources, and the only way to sustain your business besides capital, is the right marketing. I believe that education is the key to success. Let our team help you create a sustainable marketing plan to help you grow, and promote your business. You’re invited to join Industrious Evanston & Evanston Woman Magazine for Summer Social Mixer: Speed Networking! July 18th 5:30pm - 8:00pm. Exchange real leads, meet great people, grow your network, and win great gift cards by local venues! Limited space - open bar - photo booth & speed networking!! pet is so much more than just fun for the family; in countless ways, pets become members of our families. They bring their own personalities, and they make us laugh or comfort us in hard times. It’s only right to give back to them what they give to us, and quality healthcare is an important place to start. At Evanston Animal Hospital, Dr. Gail Henry knows the important role an animal can have in our lives. Her caring spirit and attention to the whole animal makes her a distinguished practitioner of veterinary medicine. Dr. Gail Henry loved animals at a very young age, and that love set her on her journey to pursue veterinary school. After her undergraduate studies at Loyola University in New Orleans and joining Louisiana State University Health Center as a research associate, she applied to veterinary school and found herself at the Royal Veterinary College of London where she obtained her degree.

The beginning of Dr. Henry’s career led her to Chicago where she worked as an associate at Hyde Park Animal Hospital and Clinic for just over 6 years. She speaks about her time as an associate as formative years during which her colleagues and supervisors inspired her to open her own hospital, “When I was starting to feel I had reached my potential as an associate, this network helped me to move into practice ownership...I have not only been motivated to work hard... but to continue to learn new things about veterinary medicine.” In July of 2017, Dr. Henry opened Evanston Animal Hospital, a single doctor practice that provides “quality, personalized veterinary care to every client and patient.” Thirty minutes are designated for each appointment to ensure thorough examinations and focused consultations. With modern diagnostic equipment such as digital radiography, digital dental radiography and in-house lab machines, Dr. Henry and staff continually meet the health needs of their patients and answer clients’ concerns with excellence. Dr. Henry’s drive certainly comes from her competitive, entrepreneurial nature, but her true motivators are her friends and family. “I want to be an example of what you can achieve with hard work and I want to be a model of a strong woman in science and in business. I especially want to do this for my son because I feel that it is important for young boys to see powerful women in their lives.”

NIGHT OF DREAMS GALA RAISES AWARENESS AND FUNDS FOR LOCAL AUTISM PROGRAM

O

On Friday April 27, 2018, over 300 community and business leaders gathered at the Ritz-Carlton, Chicago to honor Morton Schapiro, President of Northwestern University, with the 2018 Dream Maker Award at their signature Night of Dreams Gala event. President Schapiro was honored for creating inclusive communities, as exemplified by his partnership and support of Have Dreams and the Project SEARCH Collaborates for Autism program, a business-based transition to employment program at Northwestern University. The benefit raised awareness and funds for Have Dreams, a local nonprofit that serves children, teens and adults with autism. Chaired by Night of Dreams gala event co-founders and longtime Have Dreams supporters Adam & Denise Hoeflich of Chicago, this year’s event raised nearly $500,000 for Have Dreams’ programming and mission to help individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) learn, function independently and socialize so that they may realize their full potential and develop into contributing members of their communities.

a trip to the Emmy© Awards, a Chicago Bulls Suite, and a seven-day trip for 10 with accommodations in a luxury home in Costa Rica, among other items. In addition to gala co-chairs Denise and Adam Hoeflich, the gala committee included Rebecca and Charlie Besser, Michelle and Ted DeGaetano, Philip Lee Harris, Andrea and Matt Johnson, Christine and Bob McQuinn, Jill and Fred O’Connor, Julie and James O’Connor, Jr., Nancy and Michael Reinsdorf, Julie and Kenneth Sacks, Honey and Sam Skinner, Ariel and Jonathan Towers, and Roni and David Vucovich.

“The advancement of advocacy, education and innovative employment training for individuals with ASD is only possible through partnerships with visionary organizations and their valued benefactors, working together to bring forth progressive change. These collaborations, including the transformative Project SEARCH program implemented by Have Dreams at Northwestern University, maximize the potential of individuals with autism through every life stage,” says Kristina Johnsen, Executive Director of Have Dreams.

ACCIDENTALCAREGIVER There are four kinds of people in the world: those who have been caregivers; those who currently are caregivers; those who will be caregivers; and those who will need caregivers.” – Rosalynn Carter, Former First Lady

his column was created because I’m often asked many questions by overwhelmed caregivers to older loved ones. As an Aging Life Care Professional I provide Answers, Advocacy and Alternatives to individuals coping with this challenge while maintaining their life responsibilities. Please send your questions to: info@AccidentalCaregiver.info. CAREGIVER’S QUESTION “I am so overwhelmed with trying to balance work, my family and the needs of my mother who has so many health issues. It seems impossible to please her. I try to do the right things, but at the end of the day I’m exhausted. What should I do?” CB: Sometimes there just doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day to get everything done, but it also sounds like you have a bit of self-talk here as well… and you are not being very kind to you. Each week, make a list of what you will be doing for your mom. Check off each task as you complete the task. At the end of each week, take stock of all that you’ve accomplished…not what you have NOT accomplished. Compliment yourself. Know it’s OK to be “good enough:” 1. Recognize there’s only so much that one person can do. 2. Delegate by accepting help from friends, family. 3. Appreciate being “Good Enough.” I invite you to send in your questions to: info@AccidentalCaregiver.info Charlotte Bishop, MS, CRC, GCM,CCM, LCPC, President Creative Care Management E VA N S TO N W O M A N .
