CARBON 12 A REVOLUTIONARY WOOD HIGH RISE
Design: Path Architecture: Ben Kaiser, Kristin Slavin, John Carhart, Evan Stravers, Serena Rebers Construction: Kaiser Group Under Construction, Completion Expected Spring 2018 All Images by Evan Stravers unless otherwise noted Portland, OR 4
Carbon 12 is currently the tallest engineered wood structure in the United States. It serves as a demonstrator of wood’s ability to make structural systems more sustainable in the U.S. construction market through the use of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) as a oor slab. The primary structure is wood, with a steel buckling-restrained brace frame in the core area to resist seismic loads. This hybrid structure represents a viable prototype for wood towers in all parts of the US moving forward, showing the potential for cost savings and carbon footprint reduction nationwide.

WILLAMETTE FALLS FOOD HUB RESIDENCES, MARKET, AND AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH IN THE FORMER BLUE HERON MILL Graduate Work Willamette Falls Legacy Studio: Instructors Becca Cavell, FAIA, Jake Freaff, AIA, and Randy Gragg Oregon City, OR 2015 10
The Willamette Falls Food Hub is a building featuring residential and retail space housed in prototype new construction and a market and sustainable agriculture research in an adaptive reuse of several connected mill buildings. The project aims to connect the history of the site with its future by planting the initial “seed” of residential and economic activity from which a prosperous district can grow. The district urban design will shape a promenade framing vibrant public and semi-public spaces. The architecture will support community-building efforts with a unique residential experience of a“vertical street” within an exciting building form that will galvanize public support.

Vertical street
A pedestrian promenade—a “vertical street”—rises around the building, offering cinematic views across the development and climaxing in a public terrace overlooking Willamette Falls. One of the site’s original mill races will power the new development with hydroelectric district energy, while another mill race will serve as a heat-sink for the building mechanical system. Food innovation has already been identified by Oregon City, Portland Metro, and other stakeholders as possible focus for the Willamette Falls district. The housing portion benefits downtown Oregon City, which, due to its historic buildings and the need for office space near the county seat, has had trouble luring new residential development. 12

Due to historic ooding of the area, this block is the closest site to the falls in which residential projects are feasible. The development of the new district is aided by providing a crucial amenity for residents: easily available fresh and nutritious food. The existing downtown farmers market gains a more permanent and omnipresent market hall while the district gains a cornerstone building.

PORTLAND SUSTAINABLE DESIGN CENTER SUPPORTING SMALL CREATIVE BUSINESS GROWTH
Graduate Work Buildings for Makers Studio - Professor Howard Davis Individual Design Work Portland, OR 2014 24
This studio’s aim is supporting Portland’s small-scale industrial, design, and craft artisans in a competitive market. We began the studio by researching several different types of small businesses and interviewing them about their spatial needs, then designed a building to meet their needs and the needs of the next generation of small design-oriented businesses. This building is intended to serve as a new center for sustainable creative culture in Southeast Portland, to augment and connect professionals with the opportunities that will help their small businesses thrive.

MCHENRY COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER A COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER SERVING NW CHICAGOLAND Design: Sharp Architects - Lisa Sharp, Principal, Evan Stravers, Intern Construction: Shales McNutt Construction The McHenry Community Health center is a crucial part of the affordable health care network in the Northwest Chicago Suburbs. The client, The Greater Elgin Family Care Centers organization, works from several large clinics in the area to provide signiďŹ cant amounts of the area Medicare and Medicaid care as well as selected specialist appointments. The building features extensive solar daylighting features for such a clinic, including sun tunnels in interior spaces.

The DeKalb County Community Foundation is a non-profit which funds numerous projects in DeKalb County (IL). The building houses the organization’s offices and a large community room which they make available for meetings and other public gatherings. The design meshes modern, functional and historical aspects to create a bright, vibrant and useful new space.
Size: 5,100 sqft. Cost: $818,000 All Images by Evan Stravers unless otherwise noted Sycamore, IL 34
The intent was to closely match the original design as was practical, but to also open up the freight room for the public. The rehabilitation included cleaning and tuck pointing of the brick and stone foundations and replacement of the roof. New aluminum clad, low-e glass windows and doors replace all of the existing openings. The Italianate frieze was re-built with fiber cement.

IN PROGRESS: HIVE MIND SELF-SHADED SUPERTALL SKYSCRAPER
Evolo & Bee Breeders Architecture Competitions “Skyhive Skyscraper Challenge” Ancitipated completion January 2018 Individual Work 2017/8 36
Hive Mind explores the formal possibilities of a honeycomb-inspired tower. As the world urbanizes, the concept of an opaque and self-shading tower could be a sustainable alternative to all-glass skyscrapers. As recent advances in drone technology can allow, this project proposes their integration at the construction stage and as a building amenity. This is a project I’m currently working on in anticipation of submittal into a few competitions later this year. I was intrigued by the challenge of bringing a formal concept I had in my head into a building design by way of a computational definition in Grasshopper.
