The ‘Real’ Start of the Half Marathon

More than a thousand runners crossed the finish line Sept. 30 at this year’s Evansville Half Marathon. On the 20th anniversary of the event, I found myself looking back at how it got started.

In early 2002, I received a call from YMCA of Southwestern Indiana executive Derrick “Big D” Stewart and Old National Bank executive Jim Sandgren. They asked to meet with me in Tucker Publishing Group’s conference room at the Old Post Office. Since most of Evansville’s citizenry is in no hurry to meet with me, let alone have to sit down together, I knew they must want something. (I’m not as dumb as I look. Debatable, I know.) But I had no idea why or the lengthy path that meeting would lead to.

To no surprise, they indeed did want something, and it wasn’t my stellar conversation. Despite all appearances to the contrary, I was in the mix of training for and competing in numerous half and full marathons and triathlons all over the country. And while I never have had illusions of qualifying for the Boston Marathon or the World Ironman Championships in Kona, Hawaii, I had mostly chosen large races in fun, exciting places — think the Chicago Marathon with 40,000 participants. If nothing else, we could draw on my experiences participating in several large-scale events. We didn’t want “just” another race.

Derrick and Jim were asking for my assistance in designing a top-notch community event that also would help fulfill the Y’s mission while raising needed charitable dollars for the organization’s programming needs. Although our collective desire was to establish a first-rate event, we also sought to offer a race that featured a running benchmark of 13.1 miles; would bring in runners, friends, and family members from Evansville and other cities; and included a training program that would offer help in completing a half marathon. Get off the sofa, follow the plan, and you could complete a half marathon. This is where the YMCA excelled in developing the popular Team 13, which now has trained more than 8,000 runners.

The shared goal was to make the course as memorable as possible, starting at Reitz Hill, running through Bosse Field, and finishing right past the Four Freedoms Monument on the thenfairly new Riverside Drive streetscape. I am proud of the role I played in helping get the race underway. We had a top-tier committee, and the YMCA is terrific at events. (Shout out to Sally Kroeger and Barb Dykstra.) The first race brought in around 2,300 runners. Over the course of 20 years, 30,235 people now have completed the half marathon. We faced many initial challenges, including spreading a 13.1-mile race throughout the city; I remember Andy Chandler of the Evansville Police Department being particularly helpful with logistics. The half marathon has evolved over the years: The course has been altered, and the race now is held on a Saturday morning. German American Bank has replaced the inaugural sponsor, Integra Bank, and does a tremendous job as presenting sponsor. But the crowning glory is, in the now two decades of the race, the half has raised more than $1.6 million for YMCA programming. My sincere congratulations to them on 20 great years and to everyone who has participated and volunteered.

One thing is for certain: I had a whole lot more energy back then – and both Jim Sandgren and I had considerably more hair.

As always, I look forward to hearing from most of you.

‘All That Light’

Danco Construction’s airy headquarters displays its quality of work

Danco Construction’s employees were getting cramped in their old headquarters at 3201 Interstate Drive. The solution: build across the street. The construction and design firm’s new space at 6505 Loehrlein Drive was completed in 2021 and took two years of planning, designing, and building to finish.

“We’re constantly growing,” says executive vice president Sandy Jones, who co-owns Danco with her husband Dan, who also serves as president.

Sandy and Dan took their time, focusing on Danco’s commercial projects before their own. Danco, celebrating its 40th year, did most of the construction for the 14,000-square-foot building, including the landscaping.

Meanwhile, Sandy’s former career as a residential builder shows throughout the interior, including the new logo and signs. Two conference rooms with cypress-paneled ceilings flank the reception area, where the Joneses’ daughter, Jodi Powell, works as the administrative assistant. Beyond is a sign displaying Danco’s new logo, replacing the previous circular design with one defined by a capital “D.”

Sandy was not initially in favor of the large, tinted windows enveloping the building. Danco architect Gary Thomas convinced her, saying natural light would pour in — for architects, a key ingredient to success.

“Natural light makes our team perform better,” Sandy says. “Everyone loves all that light.”

In the employee bathrooms, Sandy coordinated colors for florals, soap, and accents. The modern kitchen features long dining tables and is flush in gray tones, marble countertops, and stone accents on the walls. Employees can dine in or sit outside, where Sandy plans to add a firepit.

Dan and Sandy have their own space, which includes two offices plus a conference room, bathroom, coffee bar, and garage. As Dan explains it, Danco’s new headquarters serves as office space and a way to showcase their capabilities, while they use the old headquarters as a warehouse and for overflow.

“It helps to sell another project,” Dan says. “We want to show off our work.”

“My husband and I both love the business. It reflects in the workmanship,” Sandy says.

Golden Opportunity

Turley Jewelers’ secret to 75 years is strong connections with customers

It’s been three-quarters of a century since Everett and Mabel Turley started their jewelry and watch repair business in a former H.A. Woods Pharmacy location at Locust and S.E. Fourth streets.

By 1969, the business had grown enough to need its own storefront, so Turley Mfg. Jewelers was established at 12 N.W. Third St. Everett, a former coal miner and World War II veteran, worked as a jeweler and watch repairman until he died in 2014 at age 95. According to the Turley’s records, he cleaned 38,700 watches in his career.

Joan Turley, Everett and Mabel’s daughter-in-law, who keeps the business going with her husband, Bryan, recalls Everett sitting behind his desk with his nose under the desk’s edge to avoid breathing on minuscule watch pieces during repairs. Everett focused more on watches, while Bryan specializes in custom work with jewelry, including engagement rings and pendants.

Bryan and Joan run the business with their daughter-in-law Cheyenne at their new location Downtown at 14 N.W. Third St. Their firefighter son Matt helps when he can, along with other close relatives, especially around Christmas.

The business has staying power. Bryan, who went to jewelry school in his 20s, says there used to be 16 independent jewelry and watchmaking/repair stores in Evansville’s Downtown when his father started. In the past three years, at least four locally owned jewelry stores have closed across Evansville.

What keeps Turley’s around? Bryan says it is the close relationships they have developed with their customers, relationships that go back as far as four generations to H.A. Woods. In fact, a restored neon-green sign from H.A. Woods reading “Watch Repairs” hangs in the shop to this day.

“It’s been a good run,” Bryan says. “I want to get to five generations.”

River City

People in the community need to know about the Ohio River port at Mount Vernon, Indiana, Jenna Richardt says. Mount Vernon is home to Indiana’s largest port, which contributes more than $1 billion in annual impact to the state.

Another asset: About 70 percent of Ports of Indiana’s 1,000 acres available for future development are in Mount Vernon.

Richardt, who has been Evansville Regional Economic Partnership’s chief regional economic development officer, has a new role as senior vice president of business development and engagement with Ports of Indiana.

Richardt says services provided by Mount Vernon’s port can benefit any local company, not just those positioned at or near the port. E-REP and Ports of Indiana want to promote that message to existing companies as well as those elsewhere who wish to expand.

“We could land a company tomorrow, and they could start importing and exporting immediately,” she says.

Voicing a Vision Data pinpoint community needs

Three years of community visioning meetings produced a snapshot of goals for the Evansville region’s future.

Data from Leadership Everyone’s Regional VOICE initiative were publicly shared on Sept. 14. Around 2,000 participants in 73 meetings brainstormed ways to establish a better, shared future for residents of Gibson, Posey, Vanderburgh, and Warrick counties in Indiana and Henderson County in Kentucky. Online charts reflect participants’ passions along with what they want to carry forward, and leave behind. Using the data, organizers focus on six umbrella topics with the most potential impact without overlapping other groups’ missions: connected region; experiences;

supported schools; diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging; sustainable region; and a human library, when people get together and teach each other new things.

“We selected the six areas based on the visions shared with us by the diverse people of our region, and then we invited them to help make the dreams a reality,” Leadership Everyone CEO Lynn Miller Pease says.

The regional focus of Leadership Everyone – formerly known as Leadership Evansville – took shape in 2020. Miller Pease says data collected during visioning sessions since then reflect the region’s diversity in age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, income levels, county of residence, and more.

The sessions already are yielding results. The May 2022 VOICE meeting with Benjamin

Bosse High School students identified a need for upgraded facilities, including a chemistry laboratory. Leadership Everyone pitched a partnership to SABIC, and the Posey County chemical manufacturer sponsored a complete renovation made ready for the 2023-24 academic year.

around 60,000-square-foot building was saved, thanks in no small part to first responders’ efforts.

“They didn’t sit around. They told us, ‘This is just as much our building as it is yours,’” he says.

Lance suggested a donation of pickleball equipment to Evansville Garage Doors President Jeff Rothschild, who agreed. He then reached out to Emily Patton, brand manager at Escalade Sports, whose 330,000-square-foot headquarters sat on the edge of the North Garvin Street fire.

“We thought it was a great idea and wanted to help,” Patton says.

The Evansville Fire Department battled two immense warehouse blazes in 2022, helping shield residences and business structures around Oct. 17’s Morton Avenue fire and Dec. 31’s North Garvin Street inferno. Now, two neighboring businesses are showing their appreciation.

The idea originated with Brock Lance, vice president of sales and busi-

ness development at Evansville Garage

Doors, who saw firefighters playing pickleball at a local firehouse. Mike Larson, EFD’s Division Chief, says pickleball is popular among the crew, who organize a bracketed tournament at Escalade Sports called The Golden Paddle each November.

Evansville Garage Doors replaced its roof and repaired smoke damage from the Morton Avenue fire, but the

Seventy paddles, 14 portable nets, and 14 packs of six balls from ONIX Pickleball, whose parent company is Escalade Sports, were donated. Larson says the equipment donation was appreciated and immediately put in play.

“The first day the firemen got the equipment, they were using it,” he says.

EWSU’s new pump station adds a unique attraction to the Downtown riverfront

Completed in April, the 45,000-squarefoot Sunrise Pump Station and cascade add a riverfront amenity to Evansville Water and Sewer Utility’s $729 million Renew Evansville project.

Evansville’s older pipes often overflowed into the Ohio River and Pigeon Creek during heavy rain. The $60 million station creates a new pump system from the East Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Ohio River with a capacity of 40 million gallons per day — although the daily average is around 15 million.

Anderson, South Carolina’s Clemson Hydraulics modeled the movement of water through the facility, while Indianapolis, Indiana-based Donohue and Associates designed the pump station, cascade, and surrounding features. Fifty contractors and 875 tradespeople worked on the project.

Large windows outline 14,000 square feet of crescent-shaped public-use space. Glass panels allow a glimpse into the testing process and pumps, while the roof boasts sweeping views of the riverfront. EWSU also is installing signs explaining the pump station’s functions.

“We hope that we’ll be able to help our citizens understand the importance of water and how we need to be good stewards,” says Lane Young, EWSU’s executive director.

Plans include hosting high school and university students in the lab and planning for nonprofits and business event rentals. Young hopes for private funding to install an outdoor splash pad.

In August, the facility won the 2023 Community Placemaking Award from Accelerated Indiana Municipalities for

its innovation, community engagement, and sustainable development.

“We want the public to know what we do,” Young says.

Planning a Town

Family history — and a chance to leave a legacy — sparks the idea for Victoria Woods

The Warrick County Board of Commissioners in April voted to incorporate Victoria Woods, a nearly 595-acre wooded area east of Victoria National Golf Club. But you could say the idea was sparked decades ago.

Jordan Aigner’s grandfather once operated a coal shovel on this stretch of land when it was a strip mine. The Aigner family then owned some of the property through the mid-1990s, when they sold it to the developers of Victoria National. In the time since, Boonville, Indianabased Aigner Construction, Inc. — led by Aigner’s father, Jerry — developed in and around Warrick County, all the while eying the woods east of the golf club.

“With its geography, trail connectivity, and proximity to Friedman Park, it has its own sense of place, more than a typical development,” says Aigner, a Professional Engineer and Project Engineer at Aigner Construction, Inc. “There were

high, undulating peaks 60-100 feet tall. It felt like parts of North Carolina in the corn country of Indiana.”

Development potential was constrained, though, because the most immediate governing board — in this case, Warrick County — must enforce the same design standards for all properties.

“It doesn’t really let you keep some of those beautiful areas because you have to

level it off,” Aigner says. “But, you can create your own design standards by starting your own municipality.”

Enter Victoria Woods. When another landowner dropped the project, Aigner Construction bought back nearly 600 acres to keep it moving.

Indiana Code 36-5-1-2 governs the requirements to incorporate a town. Petitioners must attest that the space will be

used for “commercial, industrial, residential, or similar purposes,” is “reasonably compact and contiguous” with enough room for growth, and is in the best interests of the area’s citizens. An incorporation study must be completed detailing the kinds of services to be offered to citizens, and at least 10 percent of landowners within the territory must sign off on the petition.

To gain support for this vision, “You have to think way ahead,” Aigner says. “You have to tell people that you want to try to incorporate. When we were selling lots, we put it into our deeds and covenants that this is what we’re planning to do.”

The Aigners countered initial skepticism with community engagement.

“Just like any new idea, people are uncertain,” Aigner says. “You have to educate all parties affected: townships, public safety officials, county government. We started with the area planning commission, talked to small towns, educated the surrounding municipal entities and taxing bodies. We did a financial study on the tax impact for us and others in the county, and then we supported a third-party study to check our own numbers. That took longer, but it was well worth it.”

“The city of Boonville is the closest municipality and really could have killed it from the beginning. But we talked to them, and they thought it was a good idea,” he adds. “They’re going to work together on water and sewer service, and that allowed us to move forward.”

Up next is the November general election, in which Victoria Woods’ dozen or so residents will elect their three-member town council, giving them more voice in their own utility contracts and tax rates. From there, Aigner Construction will begin developing the community’s own design standards regarding lot size, street width, and other specifications — standards that residents themselves will play an active role in shaping. Meanwhile, Aigner Construction hopes to develop 300-400 home sites in Victoria Woods over 10-15 years.

“This was something my father wanted to do then, and it’s really special to return to the very same property we had in the mid-’90s,” Aigner says.

Evansville’s mayoral candidates discuss the city’s economic development and growth potential

Evansville voters on Nov. 7 will elect the city’s first new mayor in 12 years. Libertarian Michael Daugherty, Republican Natalie Rascher, and Democrat Stephanie Terry are vying for the office being vacated by Lloyd Winnecke, who after 12 years as mayor will lead the Evansville Regional Economic Partnership. Evansville Business asked each of the three mayoral candidates about their economic priorities, the city’s growth opportunities, and strategies for attracting new business and industry. Here’s what they told us.

NAME: Michael Daugherty

RESPONSE:

1. Immediately look at the economic development aspect and bring in additional business (and) residents. There are hundreds of vacant properties and commercial lots available where Evansville can stimulate our revenue growth by adding new businesses. We’ve done a poor job of bringing in new opportunities to increase our tax base.

2. Let’s look at white collar jobs with technology and remote workers. Office, clerical, and administrative assistants are all pretty much jobs you can do from anywhere. Remote workers go hand in hand with technology, so our increased fiber ring around Evansville, and the broadband the county commissioners pushed for, is huge. Evansville can be a great centric hub for those remote workers. We’ve invested in the infrastructure, and we’re prime to grow.

3. We have to do better at supporting small businesses, not just bringing in new business. We have to look at the percentage of small businesses that are failing (and) ask how we can help. One of the things that always bothered me as a small- to medium-business owner was the local government and the economic development all jump when a large corporation comes in. They remove all red tape from them starting their business, while the small business owner is the most affected by startup costs.

QUESTIONS:

1. Evansville’s property tax caps have impacted the city’s ability to grow revenue. How can the city raise new revenue without increasing property taxes?

2. What economic sectors show the most potential for growth?

3. What strategies would you support to attract new business and industry here?

RESPONSE:

1. Our population (has) been fairly stagnant. People come and go, and as they accumulate wealth, or they move up in their careers, you start to see some of those dollars leave the city. It’s never backfilled with higher wealth or you’re not seeing new developments within the city. Downtown has seen the most growth. Allow(ing) that growth to happen in other sectors … is very important so we can have that increase in funding.

2. Technology is an area we can really improve upon, specifically financial technology. Firms are looking for employees from this area. We’ve got two DI schools with great finance, accounting, and technology programs, a direct pipeline for these businesses as they continue to grow. We’ve got great STEM programs. That also translates to trades and labor.

3. We’ve seen a lot of different businesses come into Evansville within the last 12 years. I look forward to continuing that, but also looking at the needs of those businesses. The market has changed so much that whenever you’re looking at mergers and acquisitions, if you can show the talent and the pipelines we have, that’s going to be very attractive. Invest(ing) our time and dollars into our future employees, that’s how we’re going to pull that off.

RESPONSE:

1. One of the ways we can generate revenue is by increasing business and housing in our community. I want to form a blue-ribbon commission ... where we’ve got developers, contractors, trades, and small and large business owners coming together to really look at our system (and) make some changes so it’s easier to do development in the community. We live in a time where people can, in a lot of industries, live wherever they want. There’s a need to continue to invest in our place. That’s your park improvements and beautifying our community, adding more bike paths and trails. Those types of amenities are important to make us a more vibrant community.

2. I would hope that from a manufacturing standpoint, we continue to see growth in our region. Then, we might look at and explore technology, and then health sciences with Indiana University and our local hospitals. I think there are some opportunities for growth there.

3. We want to continue to utilize E-REP as an economic development arm and work in partnership with them. I would like to explore the possibility of a city planner, somebody who’s dedicated to developing a plan, looking at forecasting, thinking about the future, and where some of our opportunities are.

MANUFACTURED FUTURE

Evansville area companies seek the next generation of workers for emerging technologies

22 OCTOBER/NOVEMBER | 2023

At its core,

Evansville is a blue-collar community and the heart of a blue-collar region.

Tri-State laborers honed this reputation during World War II, assembling freedom-fighting airplanes and ships. Evansville then became nationally known as a refrigerator-making hub from the 1950s until 2009, when Whirlpool shipped its remaining local jobs to Mexico. And since 1998, local workers have put together some of Toyota’s most prized vehicle lines at a massive plant in nearby Princeton, Indiana.

Today, numerous companies make the Tri-State a capital of the molded plastics industry, including Berry Global, a Fortune 500 member whose worldwide presence includes three facilities in Evansville and two others within an hour’s drive.

There’s more — much more. More than 30,000 area workers punch into work every day to churn out other products that are in demand around the world. Infant nutrition formula, recycled aluminum, ready-to-eat meals for military personnel, many varieties of sporting goods, heavy truck wheels, loaves of bread, commercial tents and canopies, and pharmaceuticals all are made in the Tri-State.

The region’s latest manufacturing addition is Pratt Industries in Henderson, Kentucky, which makes 100 percent recycled paper products. The paper mill and corrugated box factory opened in September and is projected to produce 1,500 metric tons of paper daily while employing around 300 people.

According to data collected by the Evansville Regional Economic Partnership, manufacturing accounts for one in every five jobs in the region, and it contributes about $22 billion in annual gross domestic product. In fact, manufacturing makes up 41 percent of the region’s total economic activity, versus eight percent nationally. Keeping that engine roaring requires a consistent pipeline of new talent. Jobs are there for the taking at several local companies, who covet young people as well as adults who could benefit from a career change.

According to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, a fourth of the state’s manufacturing workforce is eligible to retire, and 45 percent can do so next year. Eighty-two percent of projected job openings through 2024

will require less than a four-year college degree.

The shared message from Evansvillearea companies and educators is this: A four-year degree isn’t always necessary to get a good career off the ground.

PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS

Area students start hearing this in high school, or even sooner.

Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation officials encourage a university path for students with a clear-eyed vision of certain careers. But they say other students benefit from exposure to different job opportunities that the Tri-State has in abundance.

“If a senior in high school says, I want to be an accountant, or a teacher, or in the medical field, we’re going to make sure they get to the university that can meet their needs,” says Jason Woebkenberg, EVSC’s chief communications officer. “But we don’t want to just push kids to the university who have no idea, just because it’s the end thing to do. We want to create a pipeline for making sure they’re successful, whatever that looks like.”

At the Southern Indiana Career & Technical Center on Lynch Road, students from the EVSC and other local private and public school systems take half-day

Twenty-four years after producing its first vehicle, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana still is going strong. The 4.5 million-square-foot plant in Princeton, Indiana, employs more than 8,200 people, and including suppliers, more than 10,000 walk through the doors daily. Those workers build the Sienna, Highlander, and Grand Highlander models for the Japanese auto maker, as well as the Lexus TX, a luxury SUV that is joining the plant’s inventory this year.

programs in advanced manufacturing, construction technology, engineering, supply chain and logistics management, metalworking, and more.

Along the way, hard-working students can land on-the-job training opportunities with local industries. Several of the EVSC’s industry relationships are under the umbrella of Opportunities Through Partnerships that Transform and Inspire (OptIN), through which some students can even sign on to work for those companies upon graduation. Through these partnerships, students have opportunities for career growth through advanced certification, training, and even tuition reimbursement for college coursework.

Berry Global is a longtime EVSC partner, and 25 high school juniors are starting a new hands-on program at Berry’s facility near Evansville Regional Airport. This year’s instruction is mostly classroombased, but as seniors, the students will work on the production floor and earn a wage.

“I signed up for the experience, and I like the hands-on stuff,” says Braxton

Holmes, a Central High School junior taking part in the program. “I felt like it would be a good opportunity.”

That’s the goal, according to Berry.

“They will get a chance to see what a world-class manufacturing operation looks like, every single day,” says Scott Hartmann, director of human resources for the company’s Evansville operations. “They’re going to have an opportunity to interact with individuals on our team that process the work every day, ask them questions, and learn from the real-life experiences that they have dealt with throughout their career.”

AmeriQual Foods’ partnership with EVSC is similar. The Evansville-based company is the largest provider of ready-to-eat meals to the U.S. military, and it also provides products to large commercial-branded food companies. Locally, AmeriQual employs more than 600 people, with $22 per hour starting salaries and $35 per hour salaries for higherskilled maintenance roles.

Since 2019, Real-World Application, Maximizing Potential (RAMP) students, who are at least 16, can spend half their school day working on the floor of AmeriQual’s facility on U.S. 41 and the other half in an onsite classroom, completing their school requirements.

“This is something we are very proud of as a company to be a part of, and we want to continue to be the leader and grow it as much as possible,” says Dennis Straub, president of AmeriQual Group.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana has a current workforce of about 8,200, and the number swells to 10,000 when including local supplier companies. With motor manufacturing being one of the region’s two largest manufacturing subsectors — the other is polymers and plastics — there’s a consistent need for talent, and Toyota is among the Tri-State companies that prioritize schoolbased partnerships.

The Tri-State has an eclectic mix of industries which require a variety of technical skills.

Ivy Tech Community College offers programs to train workers in “smart” manufacturing technology, which relies on computer-integrated processes and digital information sharing.

Vincennes University in Knox County and the 4T Academy at area high schools, including Evansville’s Benjamin Bosse High School. Through 4T Academy, upperclassmen explore a possible manufacturing career in a hands-on environment, and seniors can receive a paid internship.

“These programs couple hands-on learning with onthe-job training and paid internships all while preparing students for a successful and rewarding career,” Curry says.

When the Princeton plant unveiled its new Grand Highlander model in August, the Toyota USA Foundation announced $11.1 million in Driving Possibilities charitable grants to be distributed over five years. A large share of those dollars will be spent on science, technology, engineering, and math programs in schools. About $5.8 million is for Lodge Community School, a K-8 school within the high-poverty Evansville Promise Neighborhood. Lodge also is a Bosse feeder school.

Lodge never has had that type of outside investment, Principal Amy Bonenberger says, and “the things we’re going to be able to do for and with the kids are amazing.”

The entire grant at Lodge isn’t focused on manufacturing endeavors — some of it will fund mental health support, an afterschool program with the Boys and Girls Club of Evansville, new classroom equipment, staff to support English language learners, and professional development.

But Lodge students also will experience field trips to Toyota’s Gibson County plant, where they will be able to explore the manufacturing process and learn what options are available

outside of a two- or four-year college program.

Tri-State manufacturers also work with post-secondary education institutions to train and recruit new talent, as Toyota’s partnership with Vincennes University shows.

Another key player in that effort locally and across Indiana is Ivy Tech Community College, which is focused on training next-generation workers in “smart” manufacturing processes that many modern industries are using.

What is smart manufacturing? It means a transition from older, analog processes to the digital age. The emphasis is on computerintegrated skills such as data analysis, cyber security, and more. Officials say human capital still is required, even as factory practices evolve.

As an example, Ivy Tech and SABIC’s innovative plastics plant in Mount Vernon, Indiana, are teaming up on a specific program to train process control technicians. Such technicians monitor many key aspects of a facility’s operation, such as temperature, pressure, and flow, via an interface.

Ivy Tech is “an accelerator of this, big time,” says Daniela Vidal, chancellor of the community college’s Evansville campus, which serves 10 area counties. “We do need people. It might be less people in some cases, but we will need people. … You still need operators, but they need different skills. They’re going to have to operate with a human-machine interface. Instead of mostly using their hands to operate tools they will need to interact with digital devices and interpret data.”

GROWTH POTENTIAL

After selling its rolling mill to Kaiser Aluminum in 2021, Alcoa Warrick Operations still owns a power plant and smelting facility near Newburgh, Indiana. Each of its three smelting lines produces 54,000 metric tons of aluminum each year. Alcoa employs about 600 people and has openings for entry-level positions as well as higher-skilled electrical and mechanical technicians, engineering roles, and management responsibilities.

While a high school education is sufficient for operations jobs, it takes higher levels of education to move into other roles. Alcoa, like many other Tri-State companies, offers tuition reimbursement opportunities for team members who show potential for advancement.

“There are plenty of opportunities for progression and to make a successful career out of it,” says Olivier Paradis, human resources manager with Alcoa, whose plant in Warrick County began production in 1960.

At Toyota, no post-secondary education or experience is required for entrylevel production jobs. Curry says those hires can expect a robust, three-week classroom orientation, hands-on training, and work conditioning. They are also provided an additional five weeks of shop-specific training.

That’s hardly the end of the line, though. Like Alcoa and other area companies, Toyota gives its workforce opportunities to move up through post-secondary education or other professional development avenues.

Curry cites administrative departments in the company such as engineering, supply chain management, human resources, communications, and accounting. She also notes the movement toward smart manufacturing, which means production workers must keep their skills up to date.

“Increasing technological advance-

ments mean the world of advanced manufacturing is changing at a rapid pace,” Curry says. “It’s energizing to be involved in that and see the skills of our employees evolve and grow.”

Local companies and educators predict manufacturing will continue to be a driving force in the Evansville region’s economy, as it has been since the days of P-47 Thunderbolts and landing ship tanks.

They say opportunities within that sector don’t show signs of drying up anytime soon.

And while it’s clear that post-secondary education often isn’t needed to land a job in manufacturing, it’s also important to remember advancement possibilities that manufacturing work provides, says Evansville Regional Economic Partnership CEO Tara Barney.

E-REP in recent years has made attracting and retaining all types of talent a priority, and Barney says local manufacturers have a keen eye for keeping top talent in-house by steering them toward higher roles.

She says keeping college as a future option can pay dividends for workers as well as their companies, which is why many offer tuition assistance.

For high school graduates, Barney says, “The real question is, are you choosing

college now, or training now … What our employers aspire to is to have (their workers) change careers within the same employer. That’s a win.”

Banding Together

MANUFACTURING’S IMPORTANCE to the Evansville region and its economy is reflected by the Tri-State Manufacturers’ Alliance, coordinated by E-REP.

Currently chaired by Jake Ward, Anchor Industries’ vice president of manufacturing, the alliance consists of more than 140 businesses and individuals such as Red Wing Shoes, Prime Foods, Evansville Tool & Die, Gribbons Insulation, and Wabash Plastics. The alliance’s goals, according to E-REP, are “to create a vibrant and attractive manufacturing environment in Southwest Indiana that results in improved revenue and profitability and an increase in manufacturing sector jobs.”

There are quarterly events, plant tours, peer group discussions, and networking opportunities.

When should you sell investments?

If you’re a long-term investor, your portfolio may stay stable over time. You may, however, occasionally need to sell some investments. But, when — and why?

For starters, if you have investments that consistently underperform, you might be better off selling them and using the proceeds to buy others that could help you make progress toward your goals.

And if an investment you own is similar to others in your portfolio, you might consider selling it and using the proceeds to broaden your investment mix.

Here’s another possible reason for selling: An investment’s value has grown so much that it now takes up a higher percentage of your portfolio than you intended.

Finally, your own needs can change. As you near retirement, you may want to move some of your portfolio into more conservative investment vehicles. Still, you won’t want to sell all your growth-oriented investments, as you’ll need some growth potential to help stay ahead of inflation.

The bottom line? If you’re going to sell investments, make sure you do so for the right reasons.

Own a business? Consider these retirement plans

Do you own a small business, or are you selfemployed? If so, have you considered sponsoring a retirement plan?

Now is a good time to start one. Thanks to the SECURE 2.0 legislation, you can receive tax credits for opening and administering a 401(k), SEP-IRA or SIMPLE IRA. All these plans offer tax benefits and access to many investments.

A 401(k) might be a more efficient plan for businesses with several employees. Even if it’s just you, and possibly your spouse, you could open what’s known as a Solo 401(k). A 401(k) has high contribution limits, so you can put away substantial amounts for your retirement.

A SEP-IRA also has high contribution limits, but it might be more suitable if you’re self-employed or have few or no employees. That’s because you must contribute the same percentage as your own compensation to every eligible employee.

Finally, a SIMPLE IRA is easy to set up and administer. The contribution limits, however, are much lower than those of a 401(k) or SEP-IRA.

Check with your tax advisor to determine which plan is right for your needs – and the sooner you get started, the better.

Should you downsize when you retire?

When you retire, you’ll experience many changes — should one of them involve your living arrangements?

Many retirees do consider downsizing. And there can be some advantages to it.

Moving to a smaller space could lower your utility bills and upkeep costs and reduce the amount of maintenance needed. And you might be able to get rid of a lot of clutter that’s accumulated over the years.

Plus, if you’ve had your home for many years, you might be able to sell it for much more than you paid for it, though there are no guarantees.

Of course, as with any major decision, you’ll need to think about potential drawbacks. For one thing, downsizing might mean the reduction or loss of any mortgage interest deductions you’ve been claiming on your taxes. And by moving into a smaller space, you might not have room to have family members stay with you when they visit.

You’ll need to weigh a variety of financial, practical, and emotional issues when thinking about downsizing. It’s a big decision — so give it the attention it deserves.

Protecting your business from payment fraud

P ayment fraud is an unsettling reality for many business owners. Check and automated clearing house (ACH) fraud are still the most common types of payment fraud in the U.S. According to the 2022 AFP Payments Fraud and Control Report, 66 percent of organizations were victims of check fraud, and 37 percent were victims of ACH debit fraud. There are ways you can combat it to keep your business, and your finances, safe.

Avoiding check fraud

Check fraud most commonly occurs when an individual alters the payee name or dollar amount on an existing check, or submits a check via mobile check deposit, then takes that same check to a bank in an attempt to receive cash immediately.

Here are some actionable steps you can take to prevent check fraud:

• Use checks with security features such as watermarks, color-shifting ink or security threads, making them harder to duplicate or alter.

• Store checks securely and limit access by authorizing only a few trusted individuals at your business to use them.

• Make sure your authorized signers of company checks are not the same people who reconcile the account.

• Use Positive Pay, a system that matches the amount of the check, check number, and account number, then identifies the checks your company has authorized and issued. Any checks that don’t match are flagged.

It’s also important to regularly reconcile your bank statements, void unused checks and examine returned ones to reduce check fraud risk.

Of course, the most obvious way to never be victim of check fraud is to stop using them and switch to mobile and online banking.

Automated clearing house (ACH) fraud

ACH debit fraud usually occurs when a criminal obtains a business’ routing and account number from a valid check, then sets up unauthorized withdrawals from the business’ account. Scammers might obtain that information by tricking an employee into providing bank details or by stealing that information through a data breach.

It’s important to implement a daily reconciliation of your accounts so that you are prepared to act fast. Here are a few steps to reduce ACH fraud:

• Educate employees about the risks of ACH fraud and how to detect suspicious emails.

• Use strong, unique passwords for all systems.

• Implement dual control so that two individuals must approve any ACH batch.

• Enable ACH blocks and filters so that only pre-approved companies can post ACH debits.

While all steps can help, it’s important to stay vigilant and regularly review your protective measures to ensure they are up to date as financial threats evolve.

Healthcare Costs Are Rising — How Will You Prepare?

CO VID-19 surely did one thing — it caused dramatic suppression of medical claim costs and for at least two years this medical “trend” disappeared. In 2023, we got a taste of a trend bounce back. Inflation along with new technologies and medications created a triple whammy, which may have been triggered by the deferral of care during the pandemic. My advice is to strap in — a firestorm is coming.

No doubt there has been growing concern about the emergence of significant, potential large claim liability driving up healthcare costs for all sizes of employers.

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), healthcare spending in the United States is projected to reach $6.2 trillion by 2028, up from $3.6 trillion in 2018. This trend has been driven by a variety of factors, including the cost of new medical technologies, an aging population, and an increase in chronic diseases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer are responsible for seven out of 10 deaths in the United States. These diseases require ongoing medical treatment and can be very expensive to manage.

Large claim potential liability is the risk that an individual or group of individuals will require costly medical treatment or services that exceed the limits of their insurance coverage, in turn driving up healthcare premiums or claim costs for the entire company. These expenses could manifest as a serious illness or injury, the need for long-term care, or the use of expensive prescription drugs. This risk is especially heightened by a new class of miraculous, curative cell and gene drugs that can add up to millions of dollars per episode of care.

EPIC’s dedicated benefits team is focused on delivering better outcomes — to both your benefits program and your employees. The U.S. healthcare system is increasingly complex and confusing to employees and employers alike, while healthcare costs continue to rise. All this creates a near-perfect storm of benefits and healthcare-related challenges for employers who need the right strategic partner and advisor. With the setting of customized strategies for each of our clients, we can help manage both their short-term cost control challenges and the longer-term issues of health program management, compliance, employee engagement, accountability, health, and wellbeing.

ONE OF LIFE’S hard truths is that the time between the first day of kindergarten and the first day of college goes heartbreakingly fast for parents. One day, you’re watching their 2nd grade dance recital. The next? You’re deciding upon the right university – and how to fund it. With her son Daniel and daughter Rachel graduating high school in the next two years, Nancy Bach knows planning for college can be as taxing emotionally as it is financially. As an entrepreneur with 25+ years’ experience in wealth management and – more importantly - nearly 20 years as a Mom, there are few emotional or financial obstacles Nancy hasn’t had to overcome. She built Cottage Wealth Advisors to give peace of mind as a relatable peer to the parents in Evansville who have similar questions about their child’s education and their own wealth planning before (and after!) becoming empty nesters.

Whether it is the first day of kindergarten, the first day of college, or all the days before, between and after, any moment you have with your child is precious. Your experts at Cottage Wealth Advisors are dedicated to making every single one count!

Funding Lifelong Learning

In addition to being partners for parents of younger children, Cottage Wealth Advisors ALSO understands that education planning applies to many adults. Going back to school can help you advance in your career, re-enter the workforce, or chart a completely new path in life. But what are the right strategies for adults to help manage education expenses? Here are some of Nancy’s best tips for how students of all ages can help fund their return to school!

See what your employer offers.

Many large companies offer benefits such as tuition reimbursement through a qualified program that may be excluded from income. But even if it is taxed, that’s still a better strategy than paying it all yourself. Check with your employer to see if they offer any kind of education reimbursement you could tap into.

Consider tax-deferred educational savings plans.

If you have money in a 529 plan or Coverdell Education Savings Account (ESA), it may make sense to use those funds to go back to school. Often, the beneficiary can be changed to a qualified family member. If you have a flexible timeline, you may be able to make contributions to a 529 plan and build up funds.

Remember tax deductions and/or tax credits.

Though not a source of direct funding, some education expenses (if you are qualified) may be tax deductible. Also, education expenses may qualify for either the American Opportunity or Lifetime Learning Credit. Search for “IRS Publication

970: Tax Benefits for Education” online for a comprehensive overview of tax benefits and tax rules related to education.

Tap into retirement funds only if you understand the rules.

You can use both Roth & Traditional IRA savings for “qualified higher educational expenses” and avoid penalties for early withdrawal. Likewise, it

may be possible to borrow from your 401(k) plan. You will want to check with your plan administrator. However, these should be the last kind of funds to consider since they were originally invested for retirement.

Wherever you are on your financial or educational path, Cottage Wealth Advisors is dedicated to helping you live your life to the fullest. Nancy and her team care about your life story just as much as your investments. Call 812.909.9490 to start your journey!

How Women Can Prepare For Retirement

When our parents retired, living to 75 amounted to a nice long life, and Social Security was often supplemented by a pension. The Social Security Administration (SSA) estimates that today’s average 67-year-old woman will live to age 88. Given these projections, it appears that a retirement of 20 years or longer might be in your future. 1

Are You Prepared For a 20-Year Retirement?

How about a 30-year or even 40-year retirement? Don’t laugh; it could happen. The Society of Actuaries predicts that an average healthy woman that reaches age 65 has a 48% chance of living past 90, and a 26% chance of living to be older than 95. 2

Start with Good Questions

How can you draw retirement income from what you’ve saved? How might you create other income streams to complement Social Security? And what are some ways you can protect your retirement savings and other financial assets?

Enlist a Financial Professional

The right person can give you some good ideas, especially one who understands the challenges women face in saving for retirement. These may include income inequality or time out of the workforce due to childcare or eldercare. It could also mean helping you maintain financial equilibrium in the wake of divorce or the death of a spouse.

Invest Strategically

If you are in your fifties, you have less time to make back any big investment losses than you once did. So, protecting what you have may be a priority. At the same time, the possibility of a retirement lasting up to 30 or 40 years will require a good understanding of your risk tolerance and overall goals.

Consider Extended Care Coverage

Women have longer average life expectancies than men and may require significant periods of eldercare. Medicare is no substitute for extended care insurance; it only covers a few weeks of nursing home care, and that may only apply under special circumstances. Extended care coverage can provide financial relief if the need arises. 3

Claim Social Security Benefits Carefully

If your career and health permit, delaying Social Security can be a wise move. If you wait until full retirement age to claim your benefits, you could receive larger Social Security payments as a result. For every year you wait to claim Social Security past your full retirement age up until age 70, your monthly payments get about 8% larger. 4

Retire With a Strategy

As you face retirement, a financial professional who understands your unique goals can help you design an approach that can serve you well for years to come.

S.W.A.N. Virtual Family Office

What is your value proposition?

We are advanced tax reduction strategists. We help business owners, high-wage W-2 earners, real estate investors, day traders, and more eliminate as much of their federal taxes as possible. We have numerous high-impact tax strategies, and we specialize in bringing those strategies to an individual’s personal or joint return (1040). We have access to strategies used on a national basis that others do not have.

Who is your ideal client?

We help high-wage W-2 earners making more than $334,000 or who owe more than $100,000 in federal taxes. We can do a lot of advanced tax reduction planning for these individuals who have often been ignored come tax time. We also help business owners who have more than $1.4 million in revenue and more than six figures in profit, and/or are paying more than six figures in taxes. We can also do advanced planning with people who have a net worth of more than $10 million and who don’t fit in one of the other categories. Is there still time for advanced tax reduction planning for 2023? Yes, absolutely! Most strategies need to be in place before the end of the year, but they cannot be implemented in under a week. We do our due diligence to make sure clients qualify for certain strategies before any recommendations happen. We helped our clients save millions in taxes last year. We are able to use those same strategies again this year.

Do you offer services for large liquidity events or high realized capital gains?

We absolutely do. There are more options if you get things in place before realizing the gain, but life happens. We often talk to people who have a huge, realized gain and do not know what to do. We still have a lot of strategies to do offsets to mitigate, and even eliminate, the capital gains.

Do you have charitable planning available?

Yes! There are so many options available we like to tailor it to the client we are working with. We see so many other advisers only using one strategy and not using the full charitable planning playbook.

What is this charitable 4x strategy?

This is a fantastic tax reduction strategy for high wage earners, business owners, contractors, etc. You get a 4x on the contribution that you make. Example: Client’s total household income or AGI is $1 million. We take 30% of that which is the max at $300k. This is the itemized charitable deduction that goes on the 1040. The contribution from the client is $75k. You take that times 4, and you get $300k. That is where the 4x comes into play. The minimum is $25,000 to do this strategy.

Senior Connection

In the dynamic world of business and HR management, a significant challenge looms large on the horizon — an aging workforce. This demographic shift has brought forth a barrage of inquiries, primarily centered around the complex topic of Medicare. Business owners and HR professionals are finding themselves inundated with constant questions, navigating a labyrinth of regulations, and grappling with ever-evolving changes. The last thing anyone needs is additional complexity. Fortunately, there’s a solution. Partnering with Senior Connection can ease the burden by providing crucial education to your Medicare-eligible employees about their various options. In a fast-paced environment where every decision counts, this partnership can be the key to streamlining operations and reducing stress.

Did you know the average yearly claims cost to your health coverage for those 65 and older is approximately $20,000?

A s we age, our healthcare needs change, and it is likely we will need more care. The overall impact of claims can and will determine your overall cost of group premiums. Providing education to your employees empowers them to make informed decisions about their healthcare and balance their financial needs. When they understand, you both win.

Is your go-to response ‘you don’t have to worry about that right now’ when an active employee asks you about Medicare?

We focus on finding the right insurance solutions in a friendly, no-pressure environment. There’s no need for your employees to shop around. We are contracted with the most competitive companies so we can identify and compare their options, ensuring the most appropriate coverage for each employee’s individual needs.

Do you have a good system in place to educate your Medicare-eligible employees?

We offer individual consul tations and group educational seminars hosted at our office, or on-site seminars by request. If your team is

remote, we can accommodate that too! We are licensed in 27 states and expanding. We are working with employer groups across the country with their Medicare-eligible employees.

What’s so special about Senior Connection? Why should I work with you over another agency?

We proactively engage with your employees to answer their questions before they even know what to ask, rather than

taking a “wait and see” approach. We know they are swamped with information and don’t know where to start. Start with us.

Can we provide more than education to your employees?

Yes. As a fully licensed brokerage agency, if an employee decides to enroll in Medicare and secondary coverage, we can enroll them in the appropriate coverage and provide yearly service thereafter.

Both you and your employees have better things to do with your time than become Medicare experts. There’s no need to stress about Medicare. You’ve got us, and we’ll be here when you need us.

New Horizons Financial Consultants

Where to start with financial planning?

When it comes to achieving a goal, whether financially or otherwise, a solid first step is to work with a professional. But not just any professional; rather, one who has demonstrated experience and expertise in helping people just like you reach their goals. When choosing a financial advisor, it’s important to select one who not only has proven strategies and methods but also who is the right type of advisor for you.

At New Horizons Financial Consultants, we specialize in working with women. Why? Because women have historically been excluded from both financial independence and conversations around financial literacy. Therefore, we’re on a mission to empower women to feel comfortable discussing their financial goals without feeling self-conscious.

Why should I work with a professional?

It’s best to work with certified professionals who hold degrees and certifications in the finance industry. This demonstrates they are required to maintain high standards of ethics and education under the oversight of a governing body.

CenterPoint Energy Foundation

centerpointenergy.com/foundation

What is one significant project CenterPoint Energy has invested in over the last year?

We celebrated the completion of the renovations and expansion of the CenterPoint Energy YMCA in Southwestern Indiana The facility received a grant, which helped fund an 1,800-square-foot expansion that includes a multi-purpose space and a commercial kitchen Additionally, there were renovations to the building’s entrance, security system, gymnasium, STEM lab, technology center, gazebo, and prayer garden .

The center serves more than 400 children each year through after-school activities The expansion and renovations allow it to serve a larger number of families in need of educational opportunities, workforce development, access to healthy food, and assistance in reaching their full potential .

What opportunities do CenterPoint employees have to participate in community initiatives?

Employees are always encouraged to give back to the community . Through Easy Match, a matching gift program, they can donate to qualifying charitable organizations that are important to them, and CenterPoint deepens the collective impact with dollar-for-dollar matches We offer a program providing grants to nonprofits in recognition of CenterPoint employees who serve on their Boards

Volunteerism is at the heart of our company’s culture . Our employees, family members, and retirees contribute tens of thousands of hours to their communities each year

How does supporting the community lead to fulfillment and growth among employees?

Adam, an Evansville, Indiana, native, has been working for CenterPoint for almost 14 years and is grateful to be part of a company that supports the community .

“Whether it’s board membership, participating in fundraisers and charity events, or volunteering, the company provides employees with time and resources to get involved in a way that’s meaningful to them and with organizations they’re passionate about,” said Adam . “I’ve personally chosen to primarily invest in the YMCA of Southwestern Indiana . The YMCA is so much more than just a gym and it’s a privilege to be a part of it ”

The CenterPoint Energy Foundation strives to be a catalyst in our communities by leveraging everyday opportunities and resources to achieve extraordinary outcomes. That’s why we invest in initiatives to improve our stakeholders’ lives today and build a strong foundation for tomorrow.

As our community’s oldest and largest ministry of its kind, your ERM seeks to restore dignity, health, and hope through sharing the love of Jesus Christ with those in need . Our vision is to see every man, woman, and child we serve equipped to be productive citizens who enjoy lasting success in Christ

Through personalized care that restores bodies, minds, and souls, we strive to be the Lord’s hands and feet to people struggling with homelessness and other challenges here in our Tri-State area! Your ERM serves our community through a variety of different ministries: The Men’s Residence Center, ERM’s Meal Program, Day Shelter and Transitional Housing at the Centennial Center, The Youth Care Center, Camp Reveal, The Thrift Store, and Mission Grounds .

How We Make An Impact

Granted has been fulfilling once-in-a-lifetime Wishes to children with terminal or life-threatening conditions for 38 years! For these children, the simple joys of life are eclipsed by doctors’ visits, medical tests, treatments, and hospital stays The lives of their family members shift to a place of fear, stress, and worry Although Wishes can be life-changing and sometimes lifesaving, we recognize that our families need more love and support after the Wish . We fill that gap with our BEYOND THE WISH programming that provides families with dignity, respect, close relationships, support groups, ongoing support, and services

Granted is planning a comprehensive space to expand our programming to meet the needs, and best serve these children and their families . At the HOUSE OF HOPE, families will feel a strong connection, supported, understood, share experiences with others who understand their unique challenges and traumas, and ultimately have a place to meet their specific needs and improve the quality of their lives

Giving Opportunities

There are many ways in which you can help Granted .  You can donate, lend your services, leave a planned gift, or hold a fundraiser for Granted Online donations can be made via grantedtristate org, or by mailing a check to GRANTED

We’re More than a Pretty Plate

The Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust (IBCAT) began as the dream of Nancy Jaynes, an educator from Plymouth, Indiana She envisioned a specialty license plate that would serve as a rolling billboard of awareness and hope – a mobile reminder about the importance of early breast cancer detection Nancy passed away in 2008 from metastatic breast cancer, but her vision lives on Today, there are over 17,000 Indiana breast cancer awareness license plates on the road, but the word needs to continue to spread . Women must be screened annually to have the best chance of finding and fighting the disease . The overall 5-year survival rate for localized breast cancer is 99% but decreases drastically to 30% for distant-staged disease* IBCAT exists to help uninsured or under-insured low-income Hoosier women aged 40 or over receive annual screening mammograms and receive diagnostic testing when needed .

*Breast Cancer Resource Foundation

How We Make a Direct Impact on Hoosiers

Every time an Indiana breast cancer license plate is purchased through the Indiana BMV, a $25 donation is collected and returned to IBCAT . Through these and other donor dollars, we fund programs offering free mammograms, diagnostic procedures, and support services to uninsured and underinsured Hoosiers Donations also fund scholarships to graduating seniors who have a parent fighting breast cancer or have lost a parent to the disease Scholarship awardees can apply for continuation funding for up to three years if qualifications are met Since 2005, we’ve funded over $6 . 5 million in grants, and an additional $131,750 in college scholarships .

How YOU Can Help

It’s simple! Buy an Indiana Breast Cancer license plate or donate Visit your local BMV branch or follow the step-by-step instructions on our website You don’t have to wait until you renew your plates You can switch your plate at any time Donations can be made 24/7 on our website or by mail You can also ask your employer if they will do a match!

Our Mission

To increase awareness and improve access to breast cancer screening, diagnosis, and support services throughout Indiana.

Our Impact

• Our plate serves as an everyday reminder to get screened and spreads awareness of breast cancer

• Free mammograms and diagnostic services to uninsured and underinsured Indiana residents

• Grocery and transportation assistance for Hoosiers undergoing breast cancer treatment

• College scholarships to Indiana graduating seniors with a parent fighting breast cancer or who lost a parent to the disease

Celebrating 25 Years

2023 marks a monumental year for Youth First as we celebrate our 25th anniversary In 1998, the founding Board envisioned an impactful organization that would transform and save lives, but they could not have imagined just how impactful Youth First would become, thanks to supporters like you!

Today over 52,000 students in 120 schools across 13 Indiana counties have access to Youth First’s services and prevention programs Our 90 school-based mental health professionals (primarily licensed, master’s level social workers) and evidence-based programs strengthen thousands of youth and their families every year . One example is Leah, thriving today thanks to Youth First’s support:

“At the beginning of fourth grade, I had trouble adjusting to my new classroom and began experiencing panic attacks. When I started working with my school’s Youth First Social Worker, I learned I was experiencing anxiety. She gave me a toolkit of coping skills to manage my anxiety and panic attacks so I could attend classes regularly. She also helped boost my confidence in the classroom by assuring me she was right down the hall whenever I needed her. I learned my anxiety doesn’t have to define me or hold me back. I am now 24 years old, a graduate of Indiana University, and my husband and I live in San Antonio, Texas, where I am pursuing my master’s in Public Health at the University of Texas Health Science Center.”

The Silver Lining

Silver is the 25th-anniversary symbol, which is fitting because Youth First is the silver lining for vulnerable children Our mental health professionals provide a professionally trained, caring presence for students struggling with anxiety, depression, grief, substance use, or suicidal thoughts Free of charge and right down the hall, Youth First’s mental health professionals help students thrive .

Giving Opportunities

With your backing, more students and their families will develop healthier mindsets and build stronger futures . Your investment will help young people manage stress, improve resiliency, increase hopefulness, and strengthen other life skills that boost school performance and workforce readiness . Donate today at youthfirstinc org!

Our Mission

Youth First’s mission is to strengthen youth and families by providing evidence-based programs that promote mental health, prevent substance misuse, and maximize student success.

BCS was started in 2001 when owner Jason Buchanan decided after interviewing with other local companies that he could deliver a better product himself. BCS started out as a telecommunications company that quickly added other much-needed services to its customer base.

What solutions do you offer clients?

Telecommunications, A/V, security and fire alarm, CCTV, network cabling and fiber optics, national account management, and school security. We also have engineering design, CAD, and grant writing departments.

How does your company give back to the local community?

BCS supports many local charities through cash donations, equipment donations, and help with finding and writing grants. This year alone, we have found several millions of dollars for local charities.

What does the BCS grant writing department do?

Our grant writing department works with local charities, not-for-profits, and schools by helping them to acquire funds for their much needed

security projects. The BCS grant team has helped organizations find millions of dollars to green light these projects. BCS knows security better than anyone and we have the people in place that can help organizations secure the necessary funding. We make it easy!

What’s new for BCS in 2023?

BCS is proud to have expanded into our new corporate offices at 1708 N. Spring St. in Evansville.

What makes BCS unique?

BCS is the only local company that offers all the services we do in this area. BCS warehouses millions of dollars in inventory in Evansville to meet the needs of our

BCS Corporate Headquarters

What is the biggest change you have seen in the last year?

It becomes a bigger challenge every year to find talented hard working team members. We have been very blessed that although this has been a challenge, we are still able to recruit the best talent in the market.

What is something you wish more people knew about your business?

We wish more people were aware of the diversity that we offer in regards to technology. Our team is simply the best around and you cannot beat the levels of service that we deliver. We can very easily implement multi-million-dollar projects, and we can just as easily implement $10,000 projects.

Are there current trends in your industry that business owners should be aware of?

We are finding that as we see some products starting to be available again, shortages of other related products have started happening. Make sure that you are making

How has BCS grown since the beginning? How many people do you employ?

BCS has grown over the years through slow and then not slow growth. We have seen growth of 100% in two years and then followed that up by 100% growth in one year. We employ approximately 40 people.

What kind of access does BCS have to inventory?

BCS has and will continue to evaluate market shifts and try to pre-purchase as much inventory as possible. BCS has its own private 12,000-square-foot warehouse in Evansville.

BCS was founded as a telecommunications company, and we continue to grow and evolve with the industry. We offer everything from self-owned systems to systems run completely through the internet. BCS is most unique because we can make your phones be the center of your technology solutions through the integration of video conferencing, door security, paging and intercom systems, and more.

A/V

From small conference rooms to large corporations with networked training rooms to video walls to houses of worship, BCS has you covered. Our factory-trained audio visual engineers will work with you to come up with the best, most innovative solutions.

SECURITY AND FIRE ALARM

BCS can design, approve, and submit fire alarm design to the city and state level in Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, and many more states. Our fire team has NICET-certified technicians, including NICET level 3. BCS saves our customers money by being able to monitor fire and security while simultaneously eliminating the need for multiple monitoring agreements. We are one of the few local companies that do not require long-term auto renewing contracts for these services. (Contracts are available by request.)

CCTV

BCS holds the highest certifications and dealer statuses from our camera manufacturers. BCS offers U.S. government-approved NDAA compliant camera solutions.

NETWORK CABLING AND FIBER OPTICS

Cabling is at the heart of any technology-driven project. At BCS, we are manufacturer-certified and proudly feature quality, superior products backed by industryleading warranties. We offer complete solutions that make sense — well thought out and tailored to your specific needs. BCS also offers some of the highest levels of testing in the area using Fluke DSX Cable Testing.

NATIONAL ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT

bcsservice.com•812-422-4955•

There are a lot of companies with national and international coverage based out of area. One of BCS’s biggest secrets is how we manage the technology of these companies throughout their locations. BCS sends techs out to those locations when necessary and otherwise works with our network of strategically placed partners throughout the country. BCS currently manages several national accounts from the Evansville area, one of which has more than 450 locations.

SCHOOL SECURITY

One of our biggest passions, school safety systems are optimized to meet the needs of each school. These systems are designed to initiate alerts in the event of weather warnings, tragedies, or school closings. Each system can be customized, determined through a detailed evaluation and consultation. Ask about our capability to integrate with existing equipment to provide a custom-tailored solution unique to each school.

Meet Missy Mosby

Missy Mosby feels her heart belongs in Evansville and loves to give back to her community. Born and raised here, Mosby graduated from Mater Dei High School in 1986 and received her Real Estate License in 1998. Missy currently works for F.C. Tucker Emge Realtors and is a Tucker President's Club Award recipient for 2022, 2021, 2020, and 2018. She also received the Good Neighbor Award from the Southwestern Indiana Association of Realtors in 2018; United Neighborhoods of Evansville Spark Plug Winner for 2022, 2014, and 2010; Reader's Choice Winner for Best Realtor in TriState in 2022 and 2021; and Bronze Winner in 2022 for Community Votes Evansville's Best Realtor. Missy has also served as the 2nd Ward City Councilwoman since 2008. Missy currently has a Boxer (Lil Skipper), eight Yorkies (Minnow, MaryAnne, Luvie, Thurston Howl IV, Tucker Bud, Martin Evan, Mercedes, and Porsche Grace), a rescue Cockatiel (Moscato), and two rescued parakeets (Sunshine and Stormy). Missy always says that if you have to fail at something, you might as well fail at fostering!

Giving Back

Missy donates a portion of her real estate commission back to the community quarterly. She has sponsored a Feed Evansville event at Vann-Pollack Park, championed the Kids Community Closet at Caze & Fairlawn Schools to provide food to kids and families in need, serves on the House of Hope Fundraising Team for Granted, sponsored the Warrick Animal Guardians First Annual Unleashed Jeep Run this past August, helps sponsor cats and dogs adoption fees at local shelters through Buddy's Promise, and has hosted events to give away free pet

Our Mission

Buddy's Promise – Furever

Home was founded in 2018 after Missy's beloved Yorkie, Buddy, passed away in 2014. Missy resolved to honor his memory by rescuing dogs, cats, and birds, raising awareness of animal rights issues, assisting local shelters in getting animals adopted, and working with families in need so they can keep their pets. Missy hopes Buddy's memory will live on furever through her rescue efforts.

Missy and her team don’t just help humans find homes! With her commitment to helping four-legged friends in the Tri-State, Missy has been able to place hundreds of furry clients into loving foster homes and forever homes.

Deaconess Foundation is making a larger impact than ever before in transforming local health care. This year, more than $800,000 has been given back to 43 Deaconess Health System departments to assist Deaconess in providing health care to our community and be recognized as a top health system in the Midwest.

Gifts Making a Difference

Turning a loss into a positive impact for others is the very spirit that makes our community special. Evansville native Larry Breivogel lost his battle with prostate cancer in June 2021. Larry’s wife, Rose, was with him every step of the way during his rigorous cancer treatments. After Larry’s passing, Rose wanted to make a difference in helping others who will go through the same process.

In November 2022, Rose reached out to the Deaconess Foundation wanting to help other cancer patient families. Specifically, she wanted to create an endowment that could pay out dividends in perpetuity for any diagnosed adult or child oncology patient in need of support of medical incidentals. The funds would be managed by Deaconess oncology staff and case management and could support anything from helping pay for medications to the purchase of a walker.

Thanks to generous donors like Rose, we are able to make an impact on the health and wellness of the Deaconess community in meaningful ways.

Youth-focused programs include a summer theater camp and the DNA lab with a focus on leadership.

How We Make An Impact

We empower victims of intimate crime and abuse by providing support, promoting justice, and preventing violence. Since 2019, we’ve increased the number of clients served by 300%, bringing support to families in crisis. Through community-based education, we increase knowledge about intimate crime and provide skills to our most vulnerable population. Our Child Abuse Prevention Program teaches elementary students body boundaries, online safety, and identifying trusted adults for reporting abuse.

Giving Opportunities

Supporting survivors throughout the disclosure process provides compassion and stability for victims and defendable information gathering for investigators and prosecutors, costing approximately $1,150 per client. Volunteer Opportunities

Survivors and their families are offered snacks and drinks while at Holly’s House, which can be donated through our Amazon wish list. Volunteers assist in maintaining landscaping, hosting awareness and fundraising events, and providing welcome bags for the children visiting Holly’s House.

The Salvation Army’s Impact

The Salvation Army of Evansville is a refuge for families without a support system. When a crisis strikes because of chronic situations, or unforeseen circumstances, The Salvation Army is ready to meet families where they are and care for their needs. Thanks to our communities’ continued support, we offer daily meals and monthly grocery assistance to families across Vanderburgh, Warrick, and Posey Counties. We set a 10-year high record in August 2023 at over 9,000 meals served and 1,400 grocery orders offered to families struggling.

Our work continues with Emergency Financial support in times of crisis to avert families falling through the cracks. This ensures families without a support system are kept stable as they weather life’s storms. For families with chronic habits stuck in the cycle of intergenerational poverty, our Pathway of Hope program walks with families and teaches them the life skills they need.

Every family is different, with different barriers and priorities. Combined with our after-school programming, Pathway of Hope meets the family where they are in a holistic way for a life-changing impact. The Salvation Army of Evansville is for Evansville, by Evansville, and only possible with your support!

How You Can Be Involved

We need volunteers throughout the year and at different commitment levels. If you would like to receive our monthly volunteer e-newsletter, visit our website at SAEvansville.org/volunteer. If you would like to include us in your year-end giving, rest assured that all donations stay local. Funds have a direct impact in the ZIP codes they are received from. Lastly, we could always use prayer!

How We Make An Impact

Parenting Time Center impacts the Tri-State by providing a neutral safe space for children to interact with their parents or transition between parents in a high-conflict situation. Children’s and parents’ mental health are positively impacted by creating safe spaces during these tense situations. Parenting Time Center is the only provider of supervised visitations and safe exchanges in the surrounding 16-county region.

Giving Opportunities

Community support of Parenting Time Center is vital to the overall health of our community! There are opportunities year-round to donate toys, crafts, and funding to support a child’s desire to see a parent. PTC also has tangible needs for items that keep our organization running smoothly such as copy paper, ink, toilet paper, paper towels (there are also opportunities to donate an item or service for someone in need for a designated dollar amount). We are looking for community partners to financially support PTC monthly and yearly.

Volunteer Opportunities

Parenting Time Center is always looking for volunteers who are willing to help provide a safe environment for children and families. Currently, we are looking for volunteers to organize toys in the space in which children interact with parents, administrative tasks, events, and help with some activities interacting with children. (A background check is required for all volunteers working directly with children.)

• setonharvest.org

How We Make An Impact

Seton Harvest is a community-supported agriculture initiative sponsored by the Daughters of Charity Province of St. Louise. The certified Naturally Grown farm uses the land in a just and environmentally conscious way by sharing locally grown food with shareholders and persons who are financially poor and hungry in our community.

Since the inception of Seton Harvest in 2006, we have harvested 693,000 pounds of produce, with 155,000 pounds of produce donated to many local shelters, food banks, and church pantries. A portion of each week’s harvest goes directly to nearly a dozen different charities serving the poor and hungry.

Volunteer Opportunities

Seton Harvest provides volunteer opportunities for those interested in a unique, hands-on farming experience. Not all ways to help require fieldwork or physical labor.

Educational Opportunities and Farm Tours

Guided tours are available for kindergarten-12th grade students, homeschool classes, Scout groups, university classes, and business outings. Experience the beauty of the farm while learning about how Seton Harvest began, how we operate, and who we serve. Visit the hydroponic and aquaponic greenhouse, learn about the importance of composting, and nibble on fresh herbs in the herb garden. Tours can be modified to meet your group's specific interests.

Our Mission

Seton Harvest, a ministry of the Daughters of Charity, promotes care of the environment by growing food naturally, shares produce with local shareholders and people in need, and provides educational opportunities for sustainable living.

Why did you decide to create this grant program?

Many nonprofits have a small or non-existent marketing budget. Because of this, we created a grant program allowing nonprofits to apply for low-cost or free signage to promote their cause. Since 2010, we have awarded more than $300,000 in signage grants to local nonprofit organizations through our Signs of Support Grant Program. We want these amazing organizations to focus on their mission — we’ll focus on their signs.

What are the eligibility requirements to apply for a grant?

To be eligible for the program, an organization must be a nonprofit or an affiliate of a registered charitable organization and must be local to the Tri-State. Local Vanderburgh and Warrick County Public Schools and non-government civic organizations also are eligible to apply each year.

How can you apply?

Download an application on our website to get started, or call us at 812477-7763, so we can collaborate and make your ideas come to life. We can guide you to some great solutions for your needs that have a high likelihood of being granted.

Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Garden has earned reaccreditation from the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, an important undertaking for the facility every five years.

The reaccreditation process is rigorous — experts in the profession evaluate local zoos during onsite visits, and they measure them against established standards and best practices.

The process, according to AZA, is overseen by a commission of 16 zoo professionals in operations, animal welfare, and veterinary medicine. Accreditation status may be rescinded if the standards are not maintained.

The zoo first received accreditation through AZA in 1985. The 45-acre facility in the northwest corner of Evansville lost its accreditation in 1998 but regained it in 2002, and it has maintained accredited status since. The cityowned zoo was founded in 1928.

Mesker was one of 22 zoos and aquariums across the country to be accredited at the AZA’s annual conference in Columbus, Ohio. Thirty applications for accreditation were reviewed.

VANDERBURGH COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS GREG LAKE AND KARAN BARNHILL

Kelly Schneider

EDUCATION: Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice and psychology, Kentucky Wesleyan College, Owensboro, Kentucky; Master of Health Administration, University of Southern Indiana

RESUME: Community group home manager, director and vice president of group home program, vice president of group homes and medical services, vice president of operations, (currently) president/CEO, Easterseals Rehabilitation Center (1988-present)

HOMETOWN: Henderson, Kentucky

Few nonprofit agencies in Evansville cover as much territory as Easterseals, founded in 1946, which provides rehabilitative services to residents of at least 30 Tri-State counties, regardless of their ability to pay. CEO Kelly Schneider is leading Easterseals as it grows its mental health diagnostic and counseling outreach, while also maintaining its high-quality, well-known physical rehabilitation programs and other services.

WHAT’S THE MOST GRATIFYING PART ABOUT YOUR WORK AS EASTERSEALS’ CEO?

There really are a lot of different things. Obviously, knowing the difference that we make in people’s lives every day and helping them be more independent, helping them reach whatever goals they have. I enjoy dealing with people in the community and talking to them about Easterseals. People have such a tremendous, positive attitude about Easterseals. I’m out in the community a lot, so I would say, at this point, that’s almost more gratifying than the work that we do every day. You can’t fulfill the mission without the fundraising, and the reputation and community support this organization has is just phenomenal.

HOW HAS EASTERSEALS’ MISSION EXPANDED?

Our core services are physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and audiology, and that’s very important. But the mental health aspects that go along with that are also very important. And, as we know, the need has increased so much. So, we made the decision in 2017 to

expand that program based on the needs in the community. We created a doctoral level internship program under the supervision of Dr. Jim Schroeder. That program has two goals —to provide more services to many more children now, and to train the providers of the future, because we know there are not enough psychologists in this area. Southern Indiana particularly has a very low number of clinical psychologists per capita compared to the rest of the state.

TELL US ABOUT THE ENSURING THE FUTURE CAMPAIGN.

Our goal is to ensure that people at all income levels have access to the highest quality of clinical services in psychology. What sets us apart is the psychological testing we do. There’s counseling available, but if you don’t have the right diagnosis, counseling’s not going to help you. We knew when we started that program that we were providing that service — like our other clinical services — regardless of ability to pay. We knew that was going

to increase our need for fundraising. We knew we could not provide that underwriting by just raising more money the traditional way. We decided we needed a campaign to raise restricted funds that will support mental health expansion exclusively, so we’re not detracting from other core services we’re most known for and that we know are so important. This campaign will allow us to continue to have the doctoral level internship program, and even continue to grow it.

WHERE DOES THE CAMPAIGN STAND?

The goal is $5 million. We are at about a little more than 80 percent of goal. The last part is always the hardest to raise, but we’re blessed with some really good benefactors, and we are counting on more support to help us achieve this goal. The community always comes through, and so far, people have responded really well. Everybody knows the need. We’d love to finish by the end of the year, but I think we’re probably looking at the first quarter of next year.
