This exhibition, developed from an intensive period of research during a mid-career fellowship, specifically focuses on cultural displacement and dislocation, as Fernandez negotiates her pluralistic cultural identity in context to contemporary issues of global displacement and migration as well as Spanish Diaspora in the 20th century. Spanish history and art and blended and embedded in these contemporary works which echo narratives and images from a bygone era which resonate in present times.
This work marks a cornerstone to her practice and is fundamental to the development of 25 years to culminate in a major body of work which negotiates individual cultural identity from a distant/foreign culture without language or emersion in that culture.
This area of research is informed by a collection of new narratives and existing materials including documents, objects and photographs from Fernandez’s family archive particularly in context to a significant event, the Spanish Civil War.
