EVERETT COMMUNITY COLLEGE | 2015 ANNUAL REPORT

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT In the past year, Everett Community College has earned some notable accolades, including being named a national student success leader. EvCC also became the first community college in the country to be invited to join an innovative Boeing aerospace education program. And we celebrated the opening of the college’s new Advanced Manufacturing Training & Education Center (AMTEC) with Washington Gov. Jay Inslee. Best of all, a record number of students earned certificates and degrees – about 500 more than last year. Our commitment to student completion and closing the achievement gap is why Achieving the Dream named EvCC as a Leader College. To help even more students stay in school and graduate, EvCC is providing start-to-finish advising, offering a required college success class, increasing tutoring, doing more to help pre-college students transition to college level, and more. These initiatives wouldn’t be possible without the support of EvCC donors, legislators, our community partners, and our faculty and staff. As we begin our 74th year, our goal is another recordsetting class of graduates. Thank you for your support! Sincerely,

Dr. David N. Beyer President

STUDENT SUCCESS Everett Community College graduate Amber Lindamood doesn’t need national student success experts to tell her that EvCC is working harder than ever to help students stay in college and graduate. Lindamood said the support she received from EvCC anthropology instructor Cynthia Clarke and Linda Summers, who leads the EvCC Connect program for students who have been in foster care, encouraged her to earn her degree. “I felt like we were on a team together, and they always made me feel so welcome. The faculty at EvCC was a huge support for me and helped me succeed,” said Lindamood, who graduated from EvCC’s Honors program and will transfer to Western Washington University.

“Everett Community College has demonstrated that better student outcomes are possible when an institution focuses on policies and practices that help students learn at high levels and overcome challenges life throws at them,” said Carol Lincoln, Achieving the Dream Senior Vice President. That’s just the beginning, said EvCC President David Beyer. “EvCC faculty and staff have worked hard to improve student completion in the past three years, and we are tremendously honored to be selected as a student success leader,” Beyer said. “But our work isn’t done. We are committed to streamlining the path to success for every student.”

EvCC was recognized as a national student success leader in 2014 by Achieving the Dream for its commitment to student completion and closing achievement gaps. Achieving the Dream is a national nonprofit dedicated to helping more community college students, particularly low-income students and students of color, stay in school and earn a college certificate or degree. EvCC has participated in Achieving the Dream since 2011. Achieving the Dream cited EvCC’s 6 percent increase in its two-year graduation rate and 6 percent increase in fall-to-fall retention rate from 2009-10 to 2012-13 as key reasons for naming EvCC a leader college. The increases are due, in part, to start-to-finish advising, the creation of a college success class and other student success initiatives.

GROWTH: AMTEC OPENS At Everett Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing Training & Education Center, the doors open as early as 6 a.m. and classes run until almost midnight. The new 37,000-square-foot center train students for high-demand jobs in manufacturing and aerospace. AMTEC is home to six programs – manufacturing preemployment, precision machining, composites, welding and fabrication, engineering technology and quality assurance. “AMTEC immediately became a hub for workforce training and workforce development,” said John Bonner, Vice President of Corporate and Workforce Training. The center is part of EvCC’s efforts to meet the demand for skilled workers in Snohomish County. In 2013, there were 400 advanced manufacturing job openings here, and that number is increasing. Student Margaret Montagne hopes to get one of those jobs. Montagne, 50, of Snohomish, has a bachelor’s degree but was unable to find work, so she started EvCC’s welding program in September 2014. “Welding is totally different than anything I’ve ever studied before, but it relates to many of my experiences,” Montagne said. EvCC received $1.4 million in state funding to train more precision machining and engineering students in 201415 for high-demand jobs. The big increase in students in a short amount of time posed a challenge, but EvCC exceeded its targets by 18 percent.

INNOVATION In June 2015, Everett Community College became the first community college in the nation to join five universities in a Boeing-led collaboration to close the skills gap in aerospace engineering.

EvCC is the newest partner in AerosPACE (Aerospace Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering) along with Purdue, Georgia Institute of Technology, Tuskegee, BrighamYoung and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Universities. Boeing created the program in 2013 to help the next generation of aerospace employees learn through real-life collaboration on a project. “The opportunity for Everett Community College to partner with Boeing on the AerosPACE program, along with a number of distinguished universities, is a testament to the caliber of the school,” said Boeing Senior Manager Duard King. “Providing students from EvCC the chance to collaborate with students from other schools trains them for what they will see in the workplace with the dynamic global environment. AerosPACE prepares students and helps to build a pipeline of future Boeing employees.” Through AerosPACE, a small group of second-year EvCC advanced manufacturing students will participate in a year-long project that virtually teams them with students from the participating schools to design, build and test fly an unmanned aerial vehicle (also known as a drone). That’s not the only program that’s using advanced technology. In November 2015, EvCC’s Ocean Research College Academy (ORCA) launched its new custom-built research boat. The program is the only early college academy of its kind in the country – and now is the only program with a dedicated research lab and research vessel. The 36-foot boat was funded by a $218,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. The ORCA program uses the boat for student research in Possession Sound, including collecting real data from the local estuary.

Everett Community College welding instructor Kimberly Allen demonstrates how to fly a drone. EvCC students participating in Boeing's AerosPACE program will be building a drone with Boeing mentors and teams of other students from around the country.

CULTURAL PLURALISM AND GLOBAL READINESS A mariachi band played as dozens of families filled Jackson Center for EvCC’s first Noche Entre Familia. More than 100 people received information about classes, financial aid, and other college services entirely in Spanish. “We want to decrease barriers and increase information,” said EvCC’s chief diversity and equity officer, María Peña. “The Latino community is growing, and this generation is changing – many of our prospective students are, generally speaking, not just high-school aged but also parents that want to continue their education.” EvCC also welcomed a record number of high school and middle school students to its annual Students of Color Career Conference – more than 2,500. The events are part of EvCC’s commitment to cultural pluralism and global readiness. Students learn global and cultural connections in the classroom, through community events, and by learning with students from around the globe. In 2014-15, more than 300 international students from 24 different countries attended the college. EvCC students also traveled around the globe, including a trip to the Dominican Republic. Nursing students worked alongside local doctors to provide medical care and healthcare education to impoverished families. “The care we provide can be life-changing for the families, and it also provides a global perspective of healthcare for students that just can’t be taught in the classroom,” EvCC nursing instructor Candace Whedon said.

More than 2,500 high school and middle school students attended EvCC’s 2015 Students of Color Career Conference.

ALUMNI

Ray’s Drive-In has been an Everett institution since 1962. Founder Ray Campbell opened the business the same year as the Seattle World’s Fair and, thanks to Ray’s grandson, Jeff Doleshel, the business is still going strong. Doleshel, who graduated from EvCC in 1992, began working at Ray’s in high school and continued while attending EvCC. “Having a flexible schedule at EvCC was a huge advantage, given the hectic demands of the restaurant,” he said. He took over the eatery in 1999 and recently took advantage of EvCC’s Small Business Accelerator Signature Program, adding to the skills required to operate a business in today’s economy. Like Doleshel, most EvCC alumni stay close – 80 percent stay in the area to live and work after college. EvCC 2015 Distinguished Alumni Janice Green and Howie Bargreen did. Greene is the Snohomish County NAACP branch president and a longtime Boeing Company employee. Bargreen is president of Bargreen Coffee Company. “Janice and Howie have worked to make this community stronger,” President David Beyer said. FACULTY & STAFF In a single month, EvCC theater instructor Beth Peterson watched two of her original plays performed on stage and a third read at a major Seattle theater.

Peterson is one of several EvCC employees earning acclaim for their work inside and outside of the classroom, including EvCC biology instructor Pamela Pape-Lindstrom.

“Beth Peterson is a true theatrical triple threat: a talented teacher, actor, and playwright,” said Jeanne Leader, EvCC Dean of Arts and Learning Resources. “She’s a great example of an artist who works diligently at her craft and contributes an impressive range of original work for the stage.”

Pape-Lindstrom is participating in a nationwide effort to strengthen college-level life sciences education, leading a grant-funded project to create a certification for colleges who revamp their undergraduate biology education.

In addition to teaching at EvCC, Peterson is on staff at Seattle Sketch Festival. She has worked with Annex Theatre, Theatre Schmeatre, Book It Rep and the former Empty Space Theatre Company. “Theatre is about sharing stories. About listening, and being heard. In a time when we are losing connection within our society, theatre helps to create community,” she said.

EvCC also presented its highest honor, the George Shuh award, to Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning Peg Balachowski for her work supporting faculty innovation; Cosmetology instructor Tina Evans for her leadership; and administrative assistant Debbie Sarich for her work with students and helping with major changes in her department.

ATHLETICS

Ed Pepple, winningest coach in Washington state history, says he “owes his career” to Everett Junior College coach Walt Price. Pepple played basketball for EJC in 1951, but couldn’t play the next year because he had to work. He thought his basketball career and his college education were over. Then Price stepped in. The coach called the University of Utah and helped Pepple get a basketball scholarship. “I wouldn’t have been able to go without him,” Pepple said. Pepple and other former college athletes packed the gym in June 2015 to celebrate Coach Price’s legacy and the gym’s new name: the Walt Price Student Fitness Center. Price coached football and basketball and was the athletic director at the college for more than 20 years.

The celebration also included the new members of EvCC’s Athletic Hall of Fame – players Shawn Frank, Linda Livingston, Chad McGuire, Tony Softli, and Shawna (Schooley) Taylor; assistant basketball coach Jim Elsner; and the 1964 men’s tennis team and the 2009 women’s cross country team. In 2014-15, more than 200 athletes played for the college’s 11 athletic teams, including the 2014 Northwest Athletic Conference championship-winning women’s soccer team. Future athletes will see Walt Price’s name every time they walk into the gym. Coach Price’s former players hope the students are inspired by their coach’s lasting lessons. “He was a great teacher and a great coach,” said Dwayne Lane, who played for the college’s football team in 1955 and 1956. “I’m glad he’s being remembered this way.”

FAMILY DONATES WHIDBEY ISLAND PROPERTY FOR EVCC STUDENT RESEARCH On the shore of south Whidbey Island, land once owned by a high school principal is becoming a site for crucial research about Possession Sound’s ecosystem.

about it, and to have the students have an opportunity to be on this beach, to touch it and study it will transform the students’ research.”

Gary and Kathi Lang donated the 3.8 acres of waterfront property purchased by Gary’s dad, Don Lang, to Everett Community College’s Ocean Research College Academy (ORCA).

Students will also use the site to collect data for ORCA’s ongoing State of Possession Sound monitoring, which gathers information about the sound’s ecosystem.

Kathi’s daughter, Rebekah, graduated from ORCA in 2013, finishing her last two years of high school and first two years of college at the same time. ORCA is an early college academy for high school students focused on marine science and hands-on student research. The family is donating the land to the ORCA program “because of everything it has done for my daughter,” Kathi Lang said. “To be able to do something for kids in the future, that’s really important to us.” Don Lang was a longtime principal at Port Angeles High School and a real estate agent. He was unable to develop the land due to shoreline restrictions, meaning the beach has an undisturbed section of eelgrass that ORCA students will study. “That eel grass is such a critical component of habitat for every species that enters into the sound,” said ORCA director and founder Ardi Kveven. “We can’t learn enough

ORCA is an early college academy for high school students, who can earn up to two years of college credit while completing their high school education, tuition free. Most students graduate with an associate’s degree in addition to a high school diploma. The program is the only early college academy of its kind in the country. “It’s just a classic program that my dad would have been thrilled to support if he’d have known about it when he was alive. It’s just absolutely perfect, and that he could do something to benefit that – I’m sure he’s up there smiling,” Gary Lang said.
