Dear Friends of EvCC, One of the best parts of the 2016-17 school year was seeing hundreds of Everett Community College and Everett Junior College alumni visit the campus for our 75th anniversary celebrations. Former Everett High School principal Richard (Dick) Hanson was one of those alumni. Dick, who also served as assistant superintendent for instruction for the Everett School District before his retirement, had some great advice for our current students: “Remember, it’s not just what you learn, but the relationships you have with others.” We see the wisdom in Dick’s words reflected in the praise for faculty and staff from our 2017 graduates. Jeremy Allen, who earned his associate degree in technical arts through EvCC’s Advanced Manufacturing Training & Education Center (AMTEC), said the support he received helped him overcome challenges and graduate. Jeremy said that “the college definitely feels like a family to me … I feel like a part of me will always be connected to the long history that has made EvCC what it is today.” We’re proud that you’re a part of our EvCC family. Students have dubbed that family Trojan Nation in honor of our Trojan mascot. Your support and the work of our board members, donors, legislators, community members, faculty and staff ensure the college will be here for students like Dick and Jeremy for generations. Student Success EvCC helps students find their path EvCC, which has earned national recognition for its efforts to help students complete their education and transfer to four-year schools or go to work, is developing new student success strategies. A key step is encouraging students to choose a program early, develop an academic plan with a clear path to reaching their goals, and get help following the plan. That approach is called Guided Pathways. EvCC was one of five community colleges in Washington state selected by College Spark Washington and the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges for a $500,000 Guided Pathways implementation grant in 2016. The grant funding is distributed over five years.
Students say they see a clear link between their success and advising. EvCC 2017 Honors program graduate Melanie Fischer credits her instructors with helping her map out a plan for her future. “Everett is a great place to grow on a personal level. You will meet inspiring teachers and fellow students. You will feel at home and well taken care of,” she said. Fischer, who earned an associate degree in business, is headed to Columbia University in the fall to study economics. “If I could, I would do it all over again,” Fischer said.

Welcome Home! EvCC opens two new student housing buildings One year after EvCC opened its first student housing building, the college is moving students into a second – Cedar Hall.
along with the opportunity to feel connected to the college community,” said Lea Wasson, EvCC Assistant Director of Residence Life.
The new building joins the 120-room Mountain View Hall, where students have private rooms and bathrooms.
The residence halls offer exclusive activities for students living on campus, live-in staff and on-site class tutoring.
In the 132-bed Cedar Hall, students can share three- and four-bedroom apartments with living rooms and kitchens.
“It is very convenient for all students because classes are right across the street. And with 24 hour security, I feel very safe,” EvCC nursing student Sumire Moroto said.
All units in both buildings are fully furnished. Rent includes all utilities and wireless internet. “Students enjoy living in housing because of the convenience it affords them to have immediate access to their classes and campus resources,

Innovation and Partnerships EvCC is the first college in the state to offer an advanced avionics program, which trains students to maintain, troubleshoot and repair aircraft electronic systems. The college created the program after hearing about the need for aircraft electronics technicians from industry. The Boeing Co., Delta AirLines, Alaska Arlines, Rolls Royce and regional avionics manufacturers helped develop the program.
Technical Customer Service Representative certificate student Cynthia Allen answers calls in the hands-on lab, a simulated call center environment designed to give students practical experience troubleshooting incoming customer questions, maintaining accurate electronic records and providing excellent customer service.
“This is the program our industry partners wanted and need. It meets the skills gap they have identified,” said Rob Prosch, EvCC associate dean for aviation. “Graduates with an Airframe & Powerplant license and an avionics certificate have great career opportunities.”
EvCC also recently added a cybersecurity analyst certificate, hospitality management degree and technical customer service program, which trains students to troubleshoot customer questions for companies like Comcast and the Snohomish County PUD. Partnerships also support student research at EvCC. The Rose Foundation awarded $22,656 to EvCC geography instructor Kerry Lyste to purchase sampling instruments for students to conduct ecological research in his Physical Geography 205 class. The research will help students gain a better understanding of the environmental challenges involved in protecting the Puget Sound region.

Cultural Pluralism and Global Readiness Ana Gutierrez found support and encouragement at Everett Community College. Then she became the one offering support and encouragement to other students. As a Dreamer Navigator, she mentored undocumented students, helping them achieve their goals. She also helped plan the college’s Students of Color Career Conference for more than 2,500

“Everyone at the Diversity and Equity Center helped me succeed. They were very supportive and they helped me grow as a person,” Gutierrez said.
She graduated in June 2017 with an associate degree and transferred to Grand Canyon University in Arizona, where she’ll earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in psychology. After graduation, she wants to work as a high school counselor and earn a doctorate.
The center’s work is part of the college’s commitment to helping every student succeed and developing cultural competencies in students, faculty, and staff.
Faculty and Staff EvCC faculty and staff are recognized as experts in their fields, innovators, and student champions. In 2016-17, some of their awards included: * Earl Martin was named national Counselor of the Year by the American College Counseling Association. Martin, a faculty member who has worked for EvCC since 1990, was honored for his statewide leadership and longtime advocacy for counseling services at community and technical colleges. * Betsy Stam, a medical transcription and editing instructor who has taught at EvCC since 2003, received the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity educator of the year award. EvCC student Sarah Olson received the association's Rising Star award. * Michael Patching, an Advanced Manufacturing Training & Education Center (AMTEC) instructor, was a finalist for the national American Technical Education Association (ATEA) Outstanding Technical Teacher award. He has taught at EvCC since 2012. One of his students, Nicole Zupke, received the national ATEA student award for Notable Performance in Composite Design.
* Josh Searle, an EvCC Ocean Research College Academy (ORCA) English instructor, received a 2017 Washington State Anna Sue McNeill Assessment, Teaching and Learning award. Searle, a 15-year EvCC veteran, was recognized for his “extensive contribution to both teaching excellence and leadership� for creating interdisciplinary learning, English assessment and research. * Stephanie Doyle, Business and Applied Technology Division Program Coordinator; Jeanne Leader, Dean of Arts and Learning Resources; and Jerry Becraft, a manufacturing technology instructor, are EvCC's 2017 George Shuh award recipients. The Shuh award is the college's highest honor for EvCC employees. The award was established by local businessman George Shuh. His children Tom and Bette continue their father's legacy through their generous contributions to fund the awards.

Athletics After 31 years of working with EvCC athletes, Larry Walker will spend this fall cheering for the Trojans instead of coaching them. EvCC’s longtime athletic director and men’s Larry Walker basketball coach retired in November 2016. During his three decades at EvCC, he was integral in bringing back sports that had long ago been eliminated including baseball, volleyball and cross country.
Trojan baseball won the Northwest Athletic Conference North Division title and took second place in the league overall. Retired athletics director Larry Walker helped restart the college's baseball program in 2001 after a 19-year hiatus.
“During his career at EvCC, Larry has had a positive impact on athletes, coaches, colleagues and the community. Dozens of players have come through the program and become teachers, coaches and mentors to youth. Former players have coached at the high school and college level,” said John Olson, EvCC Vice President of College Advancement.
“Larry Walker has laid a tremendous foundation and I could not be more excited to serve as the athletic director at such a prestigious institution,” Studer said.
EvCC’s new Director of Athletics Garet Studer, who started work in July 2017, plans to build on Walker’s success.

EvCC celebrated its 75th year by recognizing alumni from eight programs as Distinguished Alumni, the college’s highest honor. Cynthia Andrews is a broadcaster and consultant in Seattle. She was heavily involved in student activities, serving as student body president in her second year.
Natasha Habib and Sabrina Heppe are sisters who attended EvCC prior to completing dental school. Both are practicing dentists in the greater Seattle area.
Gordon Cole is one of the original cofounders of Kirtley-Cole. He later formed Corstone Enterprises LLC, an environmental site specialist and private development firm.
Duard King works for the Boeing Company as a senior manager on the 777X Horizontal Build Line. He returns to campus often to speak to prospective advanced manufacturing and engineering students.
Caryl Thorp DeJong retired from Moss Adams as a senior manager; she was a mentor to fellow alum Star Fischer along the way. Richard (Dick) Hanson is a 1955 graduate of Everett High School. He returned as a teacher and principal of Everett High School. He also served as assistant superintendent for instruction for the Everett School District.
Paul Matthaeus is an Emmy-award winning video producer and founder of the studio Digital Kitchen. He’s best known for creating the main titles for TV shows “Six Feet Under,” “Nip/Tuck,” “House,” “Rescue Me,” "True Blood" and “Dexter.” Patti Safley teaches at Whittier Elementary School in Everett. She attended EvCC and then completed her teaching degree from Western
Washington University's program located on the EvCC campus. Lloyd Weller was a student of noted EvCC art instructor Russell Day. He returned after graduate school and taught at the college for more than 40 years. He is a recipient of Everett's Cultural Arts Commission Art Educator of the Year award. Athletic Hall of Fame 2017 Jim Brady was a golfer for the EvCC Trojans in 1968. He was the state medalist that year, continuing the tradition of excellent golfers at the college. Kristina Schumacher played basketball for EvCC in 2006-07 and 2007-08. She left as the program's all-time leading scorer and averaged 20.8 points per game her sophomore year. She is currently the head coach at Inglemoor High School.

EvCC Foundation Investing in education pays off In 2005, Luis Acevedo was working to finish his associate degree and become the first in his family to graduate from college. An EvCC Foundation scholarship helped pay for his education. Twelve years later, he’s a dentist for the nonprofit Sea Mar Community Health Center in Monroe. “If you need proof that your contributions provide life-changing education, my presence alone is a
demonstration of that,” he told attendees at the EvCC Foundation fundraising breakfast in April. After graduating from EvCC, Dr. Acevedo earned a bachelor’s degree in molecular and cellular biology from the University of Washington. He then attended the University of Washington School of Dentistry, where he received a doctor of dental surgery degree.
“When you donate, think about that there are a lot of individuals like me with a dream,” he said. “When I was in dental school, there were times I doubted myself.
