Annual Report

Dear Friends of

Everett Community College, Remember reaching into your glove compartment for a map when you needed directions? It took some time to figure out which roads led to your destination. Now, we have GPS systems and apps that give us turn-by-turn directions, plus warnings about traffic and construction. We know how long it will probably take us to get from point A to point B. At EvCC, we’re joining a nationwide effort to give students the equivalent of an academic GPS system. Instead of trying to navigate a complex educational journey on their own, we’re creating pathways to help students reach their goals. That means you’ll see some significant changes in the year ahead. For the first time, all new students starting Fall quarter 2018 will select a pathway, which is a group of related degrees and certificates. See page 6 of this report for more information about pathways. Each pathway has a team of academic advisors who work with students to create a plan for their education. Research shows that shows that students with a clear path are more likely to achieve their academic goals. This strategy is a new way of approaching a goal that’s existed since the college was founded in 1941: Help all students succeed. I look forward to sharing more with you about EvCC’s pathways in the upcoming year. I also invite you to visit our college to see the many ways the campus has changed in the last 10 years. Development includes new classroom facilities, great-looking and wellmaintained campus grounds, and new buildings on both sides of Broadway including Washington State University Everett, student housing, and retail stores adjacent to the campus. Our work wouldn’t be possible without our board members, donors, legislators, community members, and dedicated faculty and staff. Thank you for supporting our college and our students. Sincerely,

EvCC graduation speaker Ashley Kay Smith takes a selfie with President David Beyer at the college’s commencement.

EvCC Introduces

Pathways for Students During a meeting with entry advisor Jessica Cain before registering for her first classes at Everett Community College, student Kirsten Marsh was asked a new question: what’s your pathway? Starting Fall 2018, it’s a question all degree- or certificate-seeking students are answering. Pathways are similar areas of study, commonly referred to as programs, which lead to related degrees and certificates. For example, all of the science, engineering, and math-related programs form the STEM pathway. That’s the pathway Kristen selected, with plans to become a veterinary technician. Each pathway will have a Pathway Support Team who will work with students to create a plan for their education. EvCC is one of many community colleges statewide and nationwide using pathways – a research-based

approach that clarifies and simplifies choices for students. At EvCC and other community colleges in Washington state, pathways efforts are focused on helping more students, especially low-income, firstgeneration students and students of color, reach their academic and career goals.

Healthcare

For students who don’t know which of EvCC’s more than 90 programs they’d like to pursue, choosing a pathway helps them narrow the choice while increasing the likelihood that their classes will contribute to their degrees. Implementing this initiative is a multi-year effort and involves significant changes at EvCC, including advising and orientation. EvCC will track students to see if pathways increase retention and completion. For more information, visit EverettCC.edu/Pathways.

Growth Pilot John Gower will spend his days teaching students how to fly. In the evening, he’ll learn how to service and maintain aircraft. He’s a student in EvCC’s first Aviation Maintenance School evening cohort, which starts Fall 2018. With $440,000 from the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, the school is ready to train more students for in-demand jobs. “The new cohort is designed to offer added flexibility and accessibility for working students and students with families,” said EvCC Associate Dean of Aviation Rob Prosch. The 2017 Boeing Pilot and Technician Outlook forecasts that between now and 2036 the aviation industry will need more than 648,000 maintenance technicians. Aviation maintenance and avionics are two of more than 18 programs EvCC has added or expanded in the past 10 years to meet the need of local employers. To help address the statewide nursing shortage, EvCC recently received a $150,000 grant to expand its nursing simulation lab. Nursing students use the high-tech mannequins, which can have a simulated heart attack and other serious medical problems, to practice challenging clinical scenarios. The simulation lab expansion will allow the college to add an additional cohort of 24 nurses in fall 2019. The college is currently only able to accept 51 percent of qualified applicants to the nursing program, primarily due to a lack of lab space. The program growth is driving the need for new EvCC buildings. The college is planning to replace its overcrowded library with a Learning Resource Center in 2023 (depending on state funding) and replace Baker Hall, built in 1966, with a new classroom building tentatively scheduled to open 2027.

Student

Success Someday, Frances Schuppenhauer will run a prototype lab. To get there, the mechanical engineering student is learning precision machining and other advanced manufacturing skills so she can design and build her own prototypes. “To be able to learn, and work, in a field that will one day be so tied to my future career as an engineer I think is really important, and beneficial,” Frances said. “Too many engineers find their way into the field without an in depth knowledge of how their designs will become reality, and that creates problems for the manufacturers.” Frances, who received funding from the EvCC Foundation to purchase her machining tools, plans to use her precision machining skills to help pay for her engineering degree. That’s the kind of goal setting and planning EvCC is encouraging for all students through the college’s pathways efforts. Research shows that students with clear goals at the beginning of their college experience are more likely to achieve their academic goals. “I couldn't even count the number of times I've heard a student ask ‘But what will we ever use this math for? What is the application for this formula?’ Now, I have a much greater understanding of exactly how they will be used, and why they are important,” Frances said. EvCC engineering student Frances Schuppenhauer is also earning a precision machining certificate.

Diversity, Equity,

and Inclusion Sandra Laura Marquez credits EvCC program manager Maria Behrens with motivating her to earn her high school diploma. “She helps you find all the resources that you need in order to be in school,” Sandra wrote in her nomination of Maria for an EvCC You Made a Difference award. “She always has the time to help you, even when she is busy with other people. She makes you feel that you are important.” Maria, who works closely with Latino students and families at EvCC, collaborates with school districts and community organizations to help students earn a college diploma. She’s part of the college-wide effort to reach historically underserved students. Another way the college is reaching diverse students is through EvCC’s new Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program. MESA, funded by a grant from the Washington State Board for Community Technical Colleges, provides academic support, mentoring, and support for students traditionally underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. The Washington State Association of College Trustees also selected EvCC Chief Diversity and Equity Officer Maria Peña as the 2018 Equity Award winner. “Her accomplishments throughout the course of the past four years, particularly their impact on people of color, undocumented and refugee communities, Muslims, the LGBTQIA+ community, women, low-income, first generation students, and persons with disabilities, is far beyond words,” the EvCC Board of Trustees wrote in their nomination.

In the past 76 academic years, Everett Community College has educated thousands of alumni in almost every field imaginable. Two alumni who are known for their service to the community were honored in June as the college’s 2018 Distinguished Alumni – real estate developer Henry Robinett and emergency management consultant Mary Schoenfeldt. After graduating from Everett Junior College in 1950, Robinett embarked on a 20-year career in the U.S. Marine Corps, eventually retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1970. Over the years, he has worked tirelessly to bring jobs and economic development to Snohomish County and has been involved in many community organizations. In addition, he is a longtime supporter of the EvCC Foundation, believing strongly in giving back to the community and the school that gave him his start. Schoenfeldt is an internationally known expert in the field of emergency management, with a special emphasis in school safety. Schoenfeldt’s work has included public education in Everett’s Office of Emergency Management, and she has been the CEO of Schoenfeldt and Associates since 1990. She works nationwide as a subject matter expert and consultant for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Emergency Management Institute and the U. S. Department of Education, among others. In 2013, she was inducted into the International Network of Women in Emergency Management Hall of Fame. The distinguished alumni award is the highest honor given to Everett Community College and Everett Junior College alumni.

Athletics Good things happen in threes for EvCC freshman Jakobe Ford. In May 2018, he made history by becoming the first male athlete to win all three jumping events at the Northwest Athletic Track and Field Championships. It’s the third time he’s earned a triple crown at a meet. He also won all three events at the Washington state 3A high school meet in spring 2017 and at the summer 2017 National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships. At the NWAC meet, Jakobe also set a meet record in the triple jump with a distance of 50 feet 11 ¼ inches. That followed a March 2018 high jump of 7 feet ¼ inches that broke a 43-year-old EvCC record held by Doug McDonald (1975) and Steve Shelton (1976), ranking him the top community college jumper in the country. “He has professional athlete aspirations, and we’re excited to see what he is capable of,” said EvCC Track and Field head coach Tansey Lystad. Jakobe was named NWAC Co-Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Year. Sophomore Gio Jackson was also honored by NWAC as the Men's Basketball Athlete of the Year.

Foundation Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society president Kassi Blanchard graduated from Everett Community College in June with a 3.9 GPA, more than $30,000 in college scholarships and a plan to become a doctor. Nine years ago, she wasn’t able to get out of bed. A rare illness robbed her of her memory, including her ability to read and write. “I’ve worked hard to overcome many physical and cognitive barriers to become a successful honors student in college. I continue to walk the road to recovery, getting better every day in every way,” said Kassi, 34, who was named one of the college’s 2018 Outstanding Graduates. Her path to success included support from the Everett Community College Foundation – the $1,500 Earl W. Husted and Ella Husted Emery scholarship. At the Foundation benefit breakfast, she thanked donors. “I’m a first-generation, low-income student with a disability, but I am also a successful college student. I’m grateful to those who believed in me,” she said. “Thank you for choosing to invest in me. “ To contribute to the success of students like Kassi, donate online at EverettCC.edu/Foundation or call 425-388-9555.
