REPORT www.issuu.com/eve.zorawski/docs/unseencities_ online

Today, humanitarian relief camps are temporary homes to over 23 million people worldwide fleeing war, among other causes for evacuation (UNHCR, 2017). Although only ever intended as a temporary, rudimentary solution, the camp reality for many is becoming a much more permanent one – creating nothing short of unseen cities. Their state of deterioration is sadly synonymous with their very existence and institutions worldwide are struggling everyday to provide safe and dignified solutions in this ever- ongoing world crisis. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate ways to improve human resilience and quality of life in these environments, focusing more precisely on ways to improve social health and community in the refugee camp context. The aim is to equip agencies and institutions with strategic methods to plan for community building public spaces in refugee camps. Through direct relationship

5

building on-site, using interviews and informal meetings, the project was able to develop with a very intimate perspective of the existing spatial and social dynamics of refugee camps and settlements in Lebanon and Greece. By adapting traditional public space theories and pairing social health guidelines when conducting spatial studies, the results offered a candid window into what was hurting or helping community life within these environments. The overall research generated a method to measure a community’s existing social health in public space, applicable both in refugee camps and beyond, a strategic checklist intended as a comprehensive tool for planning community spaces in refugee camps as a future standard, as well as a redesign of one of the camps studied using the tools developed.

Community trust and social health can thrive when paired with relevant social anchors within public spaces. Social anchors can be defined as places or people that incubate social activity in a positive way. For example, a community garden, playground or even shop and shop owner alike.

By implementing social anchors which had proven positive influence in a community as part the camp planning process, we can directly influence the social health of residents. Below to the right you can find on-site examples of social anchors based on relevant node size.

The Greek Island of Lesvos, located just 10km off from the Turkish coast, had experienced an unprecedented increase of refugees arriving by sea between 2014 and 2016. The environmental impact of the landings, bringing vast amounts of debris, including an estimated 300 000 life jackets, was met by an largely inadequate waste management system, creating, as dubbed by the local mayor, a crisis nothing short of an ecological ticking time bomb. The Lift Project is an initiative that was founded as part of the Sustainable Global Technologies program with the aim of addressing both the environmental and humanitarian crises of Lesvos. The purpose of the initiative was to join forces with locally based NGO, Lighthouse Relief, to assist in their volunteering efforts in Moria refugee camp and to clean debris from the island’s coast. The interdisciplinary team of three also created

an up-cycled design strategy using the waste materials and raised awareness of current events and the project’s effort through interviews, news articles, social media and exhibitions. Through on-site situation assessment, data analysis and interviews the team was able to gauge the most impactful solutions within the project’s limited timeframe. By using product and graphic design methods, the team developed a prototype seat from lifejacket materials. The design was paired with carefully composed instructions, making the seat simple to build with limited tools. The instructions were then distributed to Lighthouse Relief with the intention of mass-producing lifejacket seats to address the lack of dignified seating solutions in Moria camp as well as diverting the waste from the island’s dumps.

n the last year hundreds of thousands of refugees have landed on the beaches of the Greek island of Lesbos. They’ve travelled to uncertain destinies in mainland Europe or the refugee camps along the margins. But behind them they have left life jackets, in their thousands, littering the beaches, the hedgerows, the roads, and slowly filling a municipal dump that has come to be known as the “life vest graveyard”.

The mountains of orange vests represent not just human tragedy but, increasingly, an ecological disaster. The situation has been described by the mayor’s office as “an environmental ticking time bomb”. Some of the many volunteer groups operating on the island i n t e r v i ew w i t h t h e g u a r d i a n have now turned their attention to the issue – seeking solutions which can also help tackle the https://www.theguardian.com/globalrefugee crisis. development-professionals-network/2016/ may/06/the-volunteers-turning-refugeelifejackets-into-symbols-of-hope

“There’s tons of material piling up on the island which will be buried or burned so we thought, let’s design something out of it,” says Stefanos Levidis, a London-based architecture student

ONLINE www.tema.miljobron.se/

During the fall of 2016, Miljöbron, a non-profit organization linking universities and public industry in the southwestern parts of Sweden, introduced Re:Challenge, the pilot initiative assembling students and municipalities to design new solutions for waste management, sharing and circular economy alternatives. Hammarkullen, the district assigned in this case study, is a socio-economically isolated suburb of Gothenburg, Sweden, which sought to update the existing waste management system with more sustainable alternatives. The purpose of this initiative was to reduce local waste flow, promote waste and recycling education as well as sharing and repairs among residents, whilst also improving the sense of empowerment and safety in the marginalized suburb.

31

The “Return Room” project was developed through a series of participatory methods, such as interviews and workshops conducted with the local community and relevant stakeholders. The results indicated a constantly evolving and dynamic body of actors, which a design and strategy would need to reflect and accommodate. The proposal was an update to the current waste disposal units, a redesign of the urban environment to increase safety and connections to said units and a refurbishment of existing structures into a (A) recycling/repair station and (B) community center for swapping events, smaller repairs and tool rentals. The design was also carefully developed with multiple scenarios in mind, in order to be as flexible as possible.

Toronto, an intercultural metropolis with an estimated population of 9 million by the year 2036, is the fastest growing municipality in Canada. This reality creates a constant need for urban development at an exponential pace, often times omitting opportunities for sustainable solutions and adequate community planning. This affects the city’s opportunity to provide a sustainable urban environment for its diverse body of residents. The aim of this project is thus to investigate alternative, more socially and environmentally sustainable methods to the constant urban growth in the city. The intention is to isolate specific steps in which the city can effectively address community and ecology whilst densifying. Alternative Urbanism is developed through a series of design methods, including both quantitative and qualitative data and

analysis, such as extensive statistic research, on-site assessments, workshops and interviews with municipal representatives and locals alike. The project also champions social needs with extensive research on the effects of urban design in social behaviour. The project addresses the current reality of unused urban lane ways in Toronto, recommending these sites as potential densification districts. The proposal develops one example site, using social and ecological planning methods as well as an implementation timeline to create new microcommunities within the existing urban infrastructure. The design ideally serves as a catalyst for the municipality to take an alternative route; with equally effective solutions reflecting the fast paced developmental needs.

If you want to teach people a new way of thinking, don’t bother trying to teach them. Instead, give them a tool, the use of which will lead to new ways of thinking. R. Buckminster Fuller
