We are as always busy on the nursery. Watering seems to be never ending!! A necessary chore of course and it gives us the chance to, at least once a day, look at every plant to make sure they are at their best. At least at this time of year we can enjoy the fruits of our labours and sit in the garden, relax and admire the results of our hard work, whilst planning the next big project!!!

Method

1. Bring out the juices: Wash fruit and gently dry on kitchen paper – keep strawberries separate. Put sugar and 3 tbsp water into a large pan. Gently heat until sugar dissolves – stir a few times. Bring to a boil for 1 min, then tip in the fruit (not strawberries). Cook for 3 mins over a low heat, stirring 2-3 times. The fruit will be softened, mostly intact and surrounded by dark red juice. Put a sieve over a bowl and tip in the fruit and juice. 2. Prepare the bread: Line the 1.25-litre basin with cling film as this will help you to turn out the pudding. overlap two pieces in the middle of the bowl as it’s easier than trying to get one sheet to

QUINTESSENTIALLY BRITISH PUD Ingredients 300g Strawberry 250g Blackberry 100g Redcurrent 500g Raspberry or 1 1/4kg/2lb 12oz of mixed berries and currants of your choice 175g golden caster sugar 7 slices of day old white bread from a square medium cut loaf

stick to all of the curves. Let the edges overhang by about 15cm. Cut the crusts off the bread. Cut 4 pieces of bread in half, a little on an angle, to give 2 lopsided rectangles per piece. Cut 2 slices into 4 triangles each and leave the final piece whole. 3. Build the pud: Dip the whole piece of bread into the juice for a few secs just to coat. Push this into the bottom of the basin. Now dip the wonky rectangular pieces one at a time and press around the basin’s sides so that they fit together neatly, alternately placing wide and narrow ends up. If you can’t quite fit the last piece of bread in it doesn’t matter, just trim into a triangle, dip in juice

and slot in. Now spoon in the softened fruit, adding the strawberries here and there as you go. 4. Let flavours mingle then serve: Dip the bread triangles in juice and place on top – trim off overhang with scissors. Keep leftover juice for later. Bring cling film up and loosely seal. Put a side plate on top and weight down with cans. Chill for 6 hrs or overnight. To serve, open out cling film then put a serving plate upside-down on top and flip over. serve with leftover juice, any extra berries and cream.

This quintessentially British pud, packed with juicy summer berries, is so much easier than it looks, perfect for beginners @samphire.restaurant

Wellbeing & Beauty

Paul’s Pet Page PAUL COCKERHAM MA, VetMB, PhD, MRCVS

Has over 30 years’ experience in both small animal and large animal veterinary practice and is a senior veterinary surgeon at Rosemullion Veterinary Practice

ANTIBIOTICS ANTIBIOTICS – YOUR ROLE AS A PET OWNER You will no doubt be aware from most media sources that medical authorities all over the world are worried about the increasing scale of antibiotic resistance and the consequent risk to human health. Resistance is when the bacteria causing an infection are not affected by the drug, making it ineffective as treatment. All vets who are involved in the prescribing of antibiotics have therefore been asked to think carefully about the role of these products in tackling animal disease, and where possible, to restrict their use. Antibiotic resistance in pets is also becoming a greater challenge than ever, and unlike other areas of drug research, such as those newly developed to treat cancers for instance, the prospect of having “yet another” antibiotic just around the corner is not something we can count on.

KEEP YOUR PET HEALTHY A healthy animal is better equipped to fight off infection. Just like us, if we’re run down / tired / stressed, we can often go down with a cold. It’s very similar in cats and dogs, so do your best to keep them healthy by feeding them food with a high nutritional value (unless you’re trying to slim them down!), give them a healthy lifestyle with lots of exercise and play, keep the vaccinations up to date, and if there is anything amiss, take them to your vet pronto.

DO NOT TRY TO TREAT YOUR PET YOURSELF We not infrequently hear stories of an animal being treated with medicines that were prescribed for another one, or for another condition, and surprise, surprise, there is no improvement! They may not be appropriate for your pet’s current condition, they might be out of date or contaminated – and they may even be toxic for certain animals. Doses vary considerably between weight ranges of dogs, some canine medication is toxic to cats, and vice versa. And never give human medicines to a pet therefore, unless specifically instructed by your vet.

DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

ANTIBIOTICS ARE LIFE-SAVING DRUGS Antibiotics are vital to treat and prevent disease in animals and humans. But the risk that the organism causing the disease will develop resistance to them increases every time they are used. So, to make sure antibiotics stay effective both now and in the future they need to be strictly controlled and used only when necessary and with caution.

10| FALMOUTH

Wave

Your vet may need to carry out a laboratory test to find out whether treatment with antibiotics is necessary, and if so, which one will work best. This is usually done by taking a swab from where the infection is located, and then sending it to a lab who will grow the bacteria / fungus / yeast and then test whatever they grow against different antibiotics. The results we’re increasingly getting back show some bacteria already have a scary degree of resistance, and if we don’t use the right drug, not only are we wasting time and money by treating with the wrong thing, but encouraging further resistance to take place.

FOLLOW THE DOSAGE INSTRUCTIONS We will often start off your pet’s treatment with an injection, as if they are not feeling very well and aren’t eating properly, an injection makes sure that the drug is delivered into their body, rather than

relying on them to eat tablets. This is crucial, as if doses of the drugs are given only intermittently, or tablets are regularly spat out, then the levels of antibiotics in the animal’s body go down, and not only are they not effective, but these lower levels stimulate resistance to occur in the bacteria they are trying to kill. Cats are notoriously difficult to pill, so we sometimes use a very long-lasting (10-14 days) antibiotic injection to treat infections like abscesses. It makes sure the cat has the right amount of the drug in its body to tackle the infection, and as the bacteria are killed after a few days, so the drug only gets broken down well after that time: result! But, at the end of the day, the magic pills / capsules / injections may not be the appropriate treatment, so we still have to be very careful. For instance, there’s a bacteria called MRSP (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus pseudintermedius) which is like the animal equivalent of MRSA. It’s a highly resistant bacteria which is generally found only on animals, but we’re already seeing cases where these bugs have transferred themselves to people.

GOOD NEWS Yes – there is some! – which is that the message is getting through, and the use of these drugs is going down in the UK. We used 32 tonnes (by weight) of antibiotics in small animals and horses in 2014. In 2015 it was down by 7 tonnes to 25 tonnes – an enormous reduction when you consider that the pet / equine population in the UK has remained broadly the same. But we can’t become complacent, as if resistance continues to develop at the rate it is, the government has estimated that it will be responsible for 10 million deaths per year by 2050: that’s a sobering thought.

PAINTING THE TOWN PINK! Pink Wig Goes to the Circus

2017 sees Pink Wig Ladies Night starting off the shoreside events for the 5th time on Friday August 4th. Once again the team are looking forward to the biggest ladies night out of the year and this year have decided to have a ‘theme’ to the night! Dressing up is not essential but for those who would like to partake in a little fancy dress the theme of the evening is based around the Circus. Remember all that is essential is the pink wig! It promises to be another fun filled evening starting off with one big pre-drinks gathering at The Palacio Lounge from 4:30 -6pm

where once again they will be selling pink wig cocktails with a donation to the cause for every drink sold. The Marine Band, Betty Stogs and the wiggers new mascot ‘Mabel Moobs’ will once again be leading the parade through the town to the Events Square where DJ Nate Valentino will be waiting to welcome the ladies, Embrace Dance Fitness will provide the warm up and then once again The Strutts will provide the live music for the night. There are a few ‘extras’ lined up this year for the circus theme with the support of Southwest Entertainments. Each year continues to grow beyond our expectations and we hope that this year will be no different and we are looking forward to welcoming all our supporters - old and new! We were absolutely honoured this year to receive the ‘Spirit of Falmouth’ award and know that our founder, Sally would be so proud of how much Pink Wig Events has achieved since it started as the girls night out back in 2009. To date Pink Wig Events have raised £75,000 for the Cornwall Breast Care Team and Breast Cancer Now and this year donated 2 wooden seats for the newly opened Cove Macmillan Support & Information Centre at the Royal Cornwall Hospital. Tickets and tee shirts are available at www.pinkwigevents.org.uk Bow Accessories Tanya’s Courage, Penryn Fat Willy’s Palacio Lounge As always the Pink Wig team send their heartfelt thanks to all the local businesses that continue to support them, and to the Pink Wig ladies who all make this event count year on year.
