TRANSFORMERS RISE OF THE DARK SPARK (ALL FORMATS) I only played this for a full 30 minutes, and that was enough. It’s without doubt the worst graphical game I’ve seen on next generation consoles - I thought I was back playing on the Mega Drive.There is a co-op mode for fans of transformers and 40 fan favourite characters, but my advice is to leave well alone and wait until its in the bargain bucket - which won’t be long. Score 1/10 GRID AUTOSPORT (360 + PS3) As a touring car fan, I found myself exclusively racing tin-tops for many hours. It was at least 2-3 sessions before I even competed in my first street race.The better you perform in each category, the more offers you

On the 9th and 10th of August approximately 150 of the best 4 X riders from across the country will descend on Falmouth for the biggest race of the year. Spectators are treated to the thrills and spills of the heat stages which consist of four riders competing against each other on a short track with jumps and technical moves galore. “It’s such a pleasure for Carrick riders to be hosting such an exciting event, it’s an event that goes across the ages, all members of the family will enjoy this weekend and it’s a great platform to encourage youngsters to get
involved with this exciting sport. “ We are so lucky to have such a wonderful track like this on out
doorstep and we would like to thank Pennance Farm for their continuing support,” says Derek
Heelis of Falmouth Cycles and Carrick riders. Racing starts at 2pm on Saturday 9th but this is not all that’s on offer! Expert advice is on hand with some of the biggest names in cycling displaying trade stands, together with mouth-watering local catering stands to wet your appetites. Full camping facilities are available at Pennance Mill Farm, Maenporth, so those of you wanting to have a weekend of full blown action! Local rock band Shameless will be providing first class evening entertainment during what promises to be a fun-filled day for everyone. FALMOUTH is preparing to welcome 47 Tall Ships and sail training vessels from around the world for four days of celebrations, entertainment and festivities from 28th to 31st August this year. Here we focus on three of the ships due into the port.
The Mercedes was built in the Netherlands in 1958 as ocean going fishing vessel. She was fishing for years in the North Atlantic. Atlantic Ocean Co Ltd from Merseyside bought the ship and named her Atlantic. She was registered in Fleetwood and fishing under the Red Ensign. After 14 years experience with commercial sailing ships the Mercedes is the new project of the company Wind is our Friend C.V. The ship was redesigned and built to sail international waters. She is the first sailing ship built with highest safety standards according to the new European guidelines. The Dar Mlodziezy is a Polish sailing training ship, designed by Zygmunt Choren and launched in 1982 in Gdansk and is the first in a series of six sister ships built for the Polish and Russian navy. The 110.6 meters long deck, the 62.1 meters high masts and 3.015 square meters of sails make the Dar Mlodziezy a forceful competitor in the different regatta’s.
Dasher is a Nicholson 55 owned by the Joint Services Adventurous Sail Training Centre, whose mission is to develop the personal qualities essential to members of the British Armed Forces through adventurous sail training in the Service environment.

It’s very easy for us working in a veterinary practice to be unaware of the stress and general angst of an owner who has brought their much loved pet for us to ‘sort out’ and ease their anxieties that it’s anything serious.
Equally so for the pet owner who has elected for us to perform what to us is routine surgery, but to them is a big deal, like spaying (neutering) their beloved dog. So I thought this month I’d go into what actually happens to a bitch who is admitted for spaying, to try and reassure anyone that what goes on “behind the scenes” is at the highest possible standards. Having made the decision to spay your bitch (and of course we are always happy to chat it over with you) a morning appointment is made for the dog’s admission with our veterinary nurses. They will go over the procedure with you, ask some questions relevant to your dog’s surgery and then you will say a temporary goodbye to your pet as she is taken off to our kennels. En route, she will be weighed and given a thorough examination by a nurse, and if she has any concerns she’ll ask one of our vets to assess her. If all is well – which is the vast, vast majority! – she is given a ‘pre-med’ injection, which acts as a sedative, to calm the dog down so that she is not-over concerned at being kenneled. The pre-med is also the first part of the overall anaesthetic procedure, and after 20-30 minutes, when it’s taken full effect, your pet is quite drowsy, easy to handle, her breathing is nice and relaxed, and she has no
The dog is given an anesthetic apprehensions about what’s going on. The next step is to administer a full general anaesthetic, which is done using a carefully calculated intravenous dose of ‘Propofol’ (widely used in human anaesthesia). This makes the dog unconscious, so we can insert a specially designed rubber tube directly into the windpipe, that is connected to a gas anaesthetic machine, and she then breathes a mixture of pure oxygen and isofluorane. The great advantage of using a gas anaesthetic is that the concentration of the gas can be rapidly altered: if we want her to be deeply asleep, during a particularly painful piece of surgery for instance, then we can increase the concentration. Anyway, once we’re satisfied that she is safely anaesthetised we can prepare her for surgery. When a bitch is spayed the whole of her reproductive organ system is removed – that’s both ovaries and the entire womb. We need to make an incision into her abdomen, down the midline, which gives the surgeon good access to both the ovaries and the uterus. Your pet is laid out on her back, in a cradle to support her comfortably, and her abdomen
clipped to remove any hair in the area of the incision. The skin is thoroughly cleansed with multiple applications of ‘Hibiscrub’, and after a short period of time she is wheeled into theatre. All this time the attending veterinary nurse is monitoring the anaesthetic, with constant recordings of heart rate, breathing rate and reflexes, all logged on a chart. This means that if there are developments like an increase in the heart rate, or the breathing slows down, the anaesthetic levels can be altered accordingly. Once in theatre the surgeon is already scrubbed up and dressed in surgical gown, hat, mask and gloves, and proceeds to spread drapes around the area of the incision. Now this is neither the time nor the place to go into the niceties of the surgery itself, but suffice it to say that once done, the incision is closed in three separate layers. The first of these is to stitch the muscle layers of the abdomen together, using very strong stitches so that healing takes place very quickly. It’s this layer of muscle that essentially holds everything in, so it’s important to place the sutures close enough together to get a

good seal. Then a layer of fat is stitched over muscles, generally using a much thinner suture material. Lastly, the skin is closed, sometimes with conventional sutures that need to be removed after 10 days or so, and sometimes with stitches that are buried in the skin itself and will dissolve. Once the surgeon is satisfied that all is well, the anaesthetic is turned off and your pet breathes pure oxygen until she starts to show the first signs of waking up – at which point she’ll be taken off the oxygen, carried to her kennel and bedded down so that she is both comfortable and warm, and her breathing monitored by the anaesthetics nurse so that at just the right time the tube in her windpipe is removed and she starts to breathe unaided. This is the point when we consider she has ‘woken up’ and can be safely left to her own devices, aided by the fact that she received an injection of a painkiller during the operation, so that’s already kicking in when she regains consciousness. We’ll call the owner to inform them that all is well – usually there is a great sigh of relief at the other end of the phone! – and arrange a time for your pet to be discharged. She is checked several times during her recovery period, and then when you call to pick her up, she’ll walk a bit stiffly towards you, but with a tail that knows how to wag! A nurse will go over her postoperative care: lead exercise, ‘Metacam’ by mouth to continue the pain-killers, instructions about feeding, post-operative checks... but it will all go by in a blur as the wagging tail gets faster and faster!
