Happy First Birthday to

Create Arts Café in Falmouth! Run by local mum Christina Bunt, Create Arts Café is an

independent business on Falmouth’s Events Square. Nearing its first full year of trading, Create Arts Café has established a tasty breakfast and lunch menu and hosts regular creative workshops lead by talented local artists. “I opened the café with a view of creating a warm and friendly environment with great coffee, light lunches and easy access. Falmouth is such a creative town and so Events Square was the perfect location to plan creative events in.”

Create Arts Café opened its doors in May last year and following a busy summer season has begun to run regular creative events for all ages. “We are really looking forward to inspiring the creative community in Falmouth and the surrounding area with our range of events and workshops”. Create Arts Café works alongside its online sister company Exhibit Cornwall, and proudly displays the work of local artists and crafters for sale all year round. Christina has gained support from local artists and now offers a full events calendar from free drop-in knitting clubs to creative hobby workshops, all lead by leading local talent.

Owner Christina Bunt

newton’s news

Over the last fifteen years or so we have seen some significant changes to our local community. Some would say nothing short of a transformation. These changes result from a determined plan not only to provide more and better education and skills opportunities for local people but to grow the local economy by creating Falmouth University and attracting the University of Exeter to Penryn. At the same time Falmouth Marine School has also been redeveloped. There is no doubt that these universities have been successful in attracting world class academics and students from across Cornwall and the world. Since setting up at Penryn, Exeter University has joined the prestigious Russell Group of universities that are the best of British research led universities and Falmouth has become the UK's top arts university. There can be few families in Falmouth or Penryn that do not have a family member or someone that they know who has either studied or worked at one of the universities, or helped build the universities or works for one of the many companies that provide services for the institutions or their students. Many of the staff are active citizens and are contributing in a wide range of ways to the local community. Some students have stayed in the area and set up vibrant companies, such as Rebel Brewery. Local companies employ graduates who are helping them grow their businesses here. Local people are supported at the Penryn campus to set up and develop their businesses here. While both towns are vibrant, there have of course been growing pains. Most significantly the impact on house prices and the availability of good quality homes to rent or buy for local people. There has also been an increase in anti-social behavior and parking problems too. The total number of students in Falmouth, Penryn and Truro are set to grow from the current population of about 6,300 to 8,600 by 2020. The University of Exeter and Falmouth University are currently consulting the local community on their plans, including to build accommodation for more than 1,000 new beds on their campus in Penryn as well as converting a number of possible locations in Falmouth and Penryn into purpose built accommodation. While I do support this planned growth over the next few years, I feel much more could be done to develop purpose built student accommodation in Truro on land that has already been given planning permission. This would build on the success of providing homes for students at Treliske, where the University of Exeter has a base. The Maritime Line between Falmouth and Truro enable commuting for students and staff of the universities. The partnership between local bus service providers and the universities has improved bus services locally and this work could also be built upon. At the same time Cornwall Council needs to work much more closely and effectively with Falmouth, Penryn as well as Truro City Councils to meet

the housing needs of local people as well as working with partners to deliver the infrastructure we need to support our growing community. The top priority should be developing more community based NHS services, led by our innovative and forward local GPs. The continued rise of housing costs over recent decades have hit those earning modest incomes very hard. If we are to reduce housing costs for average and low income families we have to reform the private rented sector, which provides homes for many local people. Cornwall Council has not used all the powers it already has including the Article 4 Direction and needs to do so, as plans are drawn up for Falmouth & Penryn. While the vast majority of tenants in the private rented sector in Cornwall receive a satisfactory service from their landlords, a small number of landlords act unlawfully, and place tenants in overcrowded or poorly maintained accommodation. Cornwall Council was recently awarded £127,500 to tackle rogue landlords in the private rented sector after it successfully bid for funding from the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG). The DCLG funding aims to crack down on this minority of landlords by providing funding to selected local authorities who have a large proportion of private rented housing stock. Cornwall Council is using this money to improve the skills of investigating officers and increase enforcement activity. This money along with recent legislation, means Cornwall Council will have stronger powers and incentives to tackle ‘rogue’ landlords, including a database of rogue landlords and property agents, fines of up to £30,000 and the introduction of Banning Orders for the first time. I am pleased that as a result of reforms introduced since 2010, more 'council' homes have been built locally and a range of housing options are available to enable more local people to part own or buy their own homes. This government is determined to reverse the trend of people not being able to afford to own their own home. There is a wide range of support from help with a deposit to discounts on the purchase price. We do however need the support of Cornwall Council and the local community in enabling more homes to be built as well as playing their part in enabling the infrastructure to support a growing community.

tMB, PhD, MRCVS PAUL COCKERHAM MA, Ve ll animal and large animal veterinary h sma Has over 30 years’ experience in bot e eon at Rosemullion Veterinary Practic surg ry rina vete ior sen a is and e ctic pra

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN… It’s very easy for us working in a veterinary practice to be unaware of the stress and general angst of an owner who has brought their much loved pet for us to ‘sort out’ and ease their anxieties that it’s anything serious. Equally so for the pet owner who has elected for us to perform what to us is routine surgery, but to them is a big deal, like spaying (neutering) their beloved dog. So I thought this month I’d go into what actually happens to a bitch who is admitted for spaying, to try and reassure anyone that what goes on “behind the scenes” is at the highest possible standards. Having made the decision to spay your bitch (and of course we are always happy to chat it over with you) a morning appointment is made for the dog’s admission with our veterinary nurses, on a one to one basis. They will go over the procedure with you, ask some questions relevant to your dog’s surgery – checking out things, for example, like she hasn’t eaten breakfast, and making sure we have up to date contact details for you – and then you will say a temporary good bye to your pet as she is taken off to our kennels.

En route, she will be weighed and given a thorough examination by a nurse, and if she has any concerns she’ll ask one of our vets to assess her. If all is well – which is the vast, vast majority! – then she is given a ‘premed’ injection, which acts as a sedative, to calm the dog down so that she is not-over concerned at being kenneled. The pre-med is also the first part of the overall anaesthetic procedure, and

BEHIND THE SCENES

after 20–30 minutes, when it’s taken full effect, your pet is quite drowsy, easy to handle, her breathing is nice and relaxed, and she has no apprehensions about what’s going on. The next step is to administer a full general anaesthetic, which is done using a carefully calculated intravenous dose of ‘Propofol’ (widely used in human anaesthesia).

This makes the dog unconscious, so we can insert a specially designed rubber tube directly into the windpipe, that is connected to a gas anaesthetic machine, and she then breathes a mixture of pure oxygen and isofluorane. The great advantage of using a gas anaesthetic is that the concentration of the gas can be rapidly altered: if we want her to be deeply asleep, during a particularly painful piece of surgery for instance, then we can increase the concentration, but if we’re coming towards the end of an operation we can reduce the concentration so that she’s close to waking up. Anyway, once we’re satisfied that she is safely anaesthetized we can prepare her for surgery. When a bitch is spayed the whole of her reproductive organ system is removed – that’s both ovaries and the entire womb – as if we didn’t remove the ovaries she would still show signs of coming into season twice a year, even though she wouldn’t be fertile. We need to make an incision into her abdomen, down the midline, which gives the surgeon good access to

both the ovaries and the uterus.

Your pet is laid out on her back, in a cradle to support her comfortably, and her abdomen clipped to remove any hair in the area of the incision. The skin is thoroughly cleansed with multiple applications of ‘Hibiscrub’, and after a short period of time she is wheeled into theatre. All this time the attending veterinary nurse is monitoring the anaesthetic, with constant recordings of heart rate, breathing rate and reflexes, all logged on a chart. This means that if there are developments like an increase in the heart rate, or the breathing slows down, the anaesthetic levels can be altered accordingly.

Once in theatre the surgeon is already scrubbed up and dressed in surgical gown, hat, mask and gloves, and proceeds to spread drapes around the area of the incision.

Now this is neither the time nor the place to go into the niceties of the surgery itself, but suffice it to say that once done, the incision is closed in three separate layers. The first of these is to stitch the muscle layers of the abdomen together, using very strong stitches so that healing takes place very quickly. It’s this layer of muscle that essentially holds everything in, so it’s important to place the sutures close enough together to get a good seal. Then a layer of fat is stitched over muscles, generally using a much thinner suture material. Lastly, the skin

is closed, sometimes with conventional sutures that need to be removed after 10 days or so, and sometimes with stitches that are buried in the skin itself and will dissolve. Once the surgeon is satisfied that all is well, the anaesthetic gas is turned off and your pet breathes pure oxygen until she starts to show the first signs of waking up – at which point she’ll be taken off the oxygen, carried to her kennel and bedded down so that she is both comfortable and warm, and her breathing monitored by the anaesthetics nurse so that at just the right time the tube in her windpipe is removed and she starts to breathe unaided. This is the point when we consider she has ‘woken up’ and can be safely left to her own devices, aided by the fact that she received an injection of a pain-killer during the operation, so that’s already kicking in when she regains consciousness.

We’ll call the owner to inform them that all is well – usually there is a great sigh of relief at the other end of the phone! – and arrange a time for your pet to be discharged. She is checked several times during her recovery period, and then when you call to pick her up, she’ll walk a bit stiffly towards you, but with a tail that knows how to wag! A nurse will go over her postoperative care: lead exercise, ‘Metacam’ by mouth to continue the pain-killers, instructions about feeding, postoperative checks….. but it will all go by in a blur as the wagging tail gets faster and faster!

CHAPEL PORTH TO ST AGNES

START POINT : CHAPEL PORTH CAR PARK

DISTANCE 6.1 MILES

The walk joins the Coast Path at Chapel Porth and passes the pumping engine house of Wheal Coates before reaching St Agnes Head. The route follows the coast path around the headland into the bay and down to St Agnes where there is a pub and a coffee shop as well as a sandy beach. The return route passes alongside a number of old mine workings, now overgrown with wildflowers, and along lanes and footpaths to the upper part of Wheal Coates before descending to Chapel Porth. 1. Follow the lane out of the car park, a short distance, until you reach the coast path on your left. 2. Turn left onto the coast path, in the direction of Wheal Coates, and follow the path until you reach a bench where another path joins from the right. 3. From the bench, continue ahead, keeping right along the main path, to reach another bench at the back of the valley. 4. At the bench, follow the main path to the left until you reach a junction of paths on the headland. 5. At the junction, take the path ahead along the coast until you merge onto a larger path just before an engine house. 6. Continue ahead, past the engine house and follow the path to a waymark. 7. At the waymark, take the path to the left of the coast path, then keep right to end up on the middle of the three paths from the waymark. Follow this path, keeping left along the coast, until the path eventually bends inland to rejoin the coast path. 8. At the junction, turn left onto the coast path and follow it to a fork in the path just past a St Agnes Head National Trust sign. 9. At the fork, take the waymarked left path and follow the coast path to reach a waymark just before a

quarried area. 10. From the waymark, follow the path along the edge of the coast to reach a waymark on the other side of another small quarry. 11. From the waymark, keep left in the direction waymarked along the coast path until you reach a rocky outcrop. 12. At the outcrop, keep left along the coast path until you eventually reach the New Downs Head National Trust sign. 13. From the New Downs Head sign, continue ahead on the coast path until you reach a waymark for Trevaunance. 14. Keep left at the waymark, then keep right at the fork and follow the path until you eventually reach a fork, with a grassy path leading inland. 15. At the fork, take the left path along the rocky coast path, and follow it until the path reaches a waymark with four large boulders across the path. 16. At the boulders, bear left on the path along the coast. Follow the cobbled path downhill, in the direction waymarked, until it ends by a final waymark at a gravel track overlooking Trevaunance Cove. 17. Follow the track through the gate ahead, and past the car park and buildings on your left, until you reach Watch House on your right, opposite a flight of steps on the left.

1

18. Turn left down the steps and follow the path until you reach a flight of steps above the shelter, and a path leading ahead. 19. If the tide is out, turn left down the steps and walk across the beach to the road, then walk up the road from The Schooners until you reach a junction. If the tide is very high, rather than going down the steps at the Shelter, keep right on the path and follow it to meet the road. 20. From the junction, head uphill on the road, and follow it to another junction opposite the Driftwood Spars pub. 21. At the junction, turn right past the pub car park and follow the lane up the hill until you reach Little Orchard Village. 22. At Little Orchard Village, turn right, in the direction signposted to Polberro. Go through the gap on the right of the gate and keep right to follow the path uphill until it bends to the left at a Memorial garden. 23. At the Memorial garden, keep left on the path and follow it a short distance until it emerges onto a track. Turn right onto the track and follow it around a bend to the left until you reach a large chimney. 24. At the chimney, keep ahead on the track, ignoring the various paths that lead off either side. Follow the track until it emerges onto a lane. 25. Cross the road to the footpath directly opposite and follow the path a short distance to a junction with another path. 26. Keep right at the junction, and follow the path a short distance to another junction in an open grassy area. 27. Turn left at the junction and follow the path to the end, where it emerges onto a track opposite a wooden carving. 28. At the end of the path, turn left onto the track and follow it to a fork. 29. At the fork, keep left along the track, past several junctions to the right and the Old Chapel, to emerge

onto Beacon Road. 30. Turn right onto the road, and follow it until you reach a junction to the right, marked with a granite stone on the left indicating it leads to the coast path. 31. Turn right down the lane and follow it until you reach a gate on the left with a waymark. 32. Turn left and follow the waymarked track until it ends at a stone stile. 33. Cross the stile and follow the path along the fence to a junction of paths at the end of the fence. 34. Turn left at the junction of paths and follow the path (ignoring any minor paths that lead off) to join the Coast Path at a bench. 35. Turn left onto the Coast Path and follow it past the mineshaft and along the hedge until the path forks at a waymark. 36. At the waymark, keep left along the hedge to leave the Coast Path and follow the path to Wheal Coates, aiming for the large, isolated chimney to the left of the buildings as you approach. 37. Bear right at the chimney, between the engine houses, and follow the path parallel to the coast until you reach a fork in the path, just past a cairn. 38. At the fork, keep right and follow the path to a junction. 39. Continue toward the headland, and turn left onto the coast path, to retrace your steps back to Chapel Porth.

PORTREATH AND TEHIDY COUNTRY

START POINT: TEHIDY NORTH CLIFFS CAR PARK

DISTANCE: 5.2 MILES

The walk follows a byway to the coast at Basset's Cove and follows the coast path along the rugged coastline to Portreath, passing the endearingly-named cove of Ralph's Cupboard. The route follows the cliffs behind the beach at Portreath then follows small lanes to Illogan Woods. The route climbs through the wooded valley and emerges near the remains of an old mine. Mining trails then form the route to Tehidy Country Park where the route follows Pine Walk and the Rose Garden to reach the bluebell woods of the North Cliffs plantation.

1. Follow the track back out of the car park towards the road. Turn right at the road and follow the verge until you are opposite a track. 2. Carefully turn left across the road and follow the public byway towards the coast to reach a National Trust sign for Basset's Cove. 3. Bear right to join the coast path leading from the far right-hand side. Follow this to reach a stile on the far side of Basset's Cove. 4. Cross the stile and follow the path to reach a footbridge at the bottom of the next valley. 5. Cross the footbridge and continue on the coast path to reach another footbridge at the bottom of a deeper valley. 6. Cross the footbridge and follow the path a short distance to where it splits left and right. 7. Turn right and follow the waymarked path until you eventually reach a kissing gate beside a farm gate. 8. Go through the kissing gate and follow the path to reach a waymark at a junction of paths. 9. At the waymark, follow the leftmost path to another waymark. Follow the waymarked path around the headland and from the next waymark down a steep descent to reach a final waymark next to a kissing gate. 10. Turn left through the kissing gate and follow the path to reach a driveway. 11. Turn right onto the driveway and keep right as it merges onto a lane. Follow the lane until it eventually meets the main road. 12. Cross the road to the track opposite but, almost immediately, bear left off the track onto a small path along the river. Follow this until you reach a bridge on the left, opposite the pub on the right. 13. Continue ahead along Tregea Terrace until it ends on a road. 14. Bear right beneath the bridge and follow the road (Glenfeadon Terrace) until you reach a Mining Trail signpost on the left, opposite Primrose Terrace joining from the right. 15. Continue ahead along Primrose Terrace until the lane forks. 16. At the fork, keep right and follow the lane until it ends at a public footpath sign 17. Follow the path ahead into the woods, passing through a gap in a wall across the path and over the river. Follow the path alongside the river until the path passes over the river a second time. 18. Follow the path over the river and continue along the path, slowing bearing away from the river until the path crosses over a brook at some granite gateposts.

19. When you reach the junction, turn right onto the path running alongside the brook. Follow the path until it emerges in a field. 20. Bear right and follow the right hedge of the field to reach a track by a granite gatepost. 21. Turn right down the track and follow it to a gate. 22. Go through the gate and immediately turn right down the Mining Trail. Follow this until it passes a gate on the right and then a path departs from the right. 23. Turn right onto the path and follow it until it ends at a lane. 24. Turn left and follow the Mining Trail until it eventually ends on a road. 25. Cross the road and take the path opposite. Follow it alongside the car park and through the woods until it ends in a T-junction with another path, opposite a signpost. 26. When you reach the signpost, turn right in the direction signposted "North Cliffs Plantation". Follow the path alongside the golf course and across a brook, then keep right to reach another signpost. 27. The bare root season is finally over. This year we have increased our stock of potted fruit trees so there is a great selection to be had. We try to grow a lot of our plants ourselves, if not, we use Cornish and South West growers where ever possible. Why not keep it local rather than using the massive national companies.

Diary for May

• Trim back spreading plants like Aubrieta when they have finished flowering. This will encourage fresh new growth and more flowers. • Allow spring bulb foliage to die back naturally to rejuvenate the bulb for next spring. • Tie in climbing and rambling roses. By laying the stems horizontally will encourage more flowers. • Prune spring flowering shrubs after flowering • Feed and water containers and remember to keep doing them throughout the summer. A liquid feed every 2-4 weeks will promote healthy growth and healthy plants are less susceptible to diseases • Water all young fruit trees and bushes. The main reason for losing new fruit trees and bushes is lack of water. Keep the soil moist. This applies equally to young ornamental trees • Harvest Rhubarb but only ever pick a third of the amount of stems • Pinch out the growing tip of Broad Beans as soon as the beans start to appear at the base of the plant. This should help to reduce the risk of black fly attack

• Keep on top of the weeding throughout the garden. Why waste water and nutrients on weeds • Hang pheromone traps in plum trees and apple trees to help prevent codling moth attacks and to monitor plum fruit moth • Net soft fruits to prevent the birds from enjoying your fruits • Lay straw under strawberry plants to keep the fruits clean and off the ground and cover with a net to keep the birds off • Feed the lawn with a high nitrogen fertilizer to promote healthy green growth

Plant of the month Lavender

Lavender is an easy plant to grow. It is loved by Bees and humans alike and gives a beautiful scent when brushed against. There are many varieties and is a good companion plant for Roses.
