Garden

September is a very good time to be planting Shrubs and Perennials. Many people only plant in the spring but the advantage to planting now is that the soil is warm and the plant has time to start establishing itself before winter sets in so that as soon as we start getting some warm early spring days the plant is ready to grow so giving a big advantage over spring plantings. At the nursery we have finished the new purpose built tree area and have some fantastic specimen trees.

Diary for September • Autumn bedding such as Pansy,Violas, Cyclamen and Primroses are now ready for planting. • Think about ordering new fruit and ornamental trees. Autumn/winter is the best time for planting • Order your soft fruit bushes such as Raspberries, Blackcurrants, Gooseberries etc. ready for autumn/winter

planting • Keep Camellias and Rhododendrons wellwatered at this time of year to ensure that next year’s buds develop well • Help your Pumpkins to ripen ready for Halloween by removing any leaves that are shading the fruits • When Beans and Peas have finished cut them off at

• Cornish Daffodil Bulbs • 150+ Ornamental trees now in stock • Autumn Bedding Plants • Terracotta and Glazed Pots • Large selection of Hedging Plants • Now taking orders for New Season Fruit Trees

ground level but leave the roots in the ground. These crops are nitrogen fixing so the nitrogen is released back into the ground as the roots decay • To test when Apples are ripen gently take them in the palm of your hand and give them a gentle pull, they should come away easily • Cut back the fruited canes

of your summer Raspberries leaving the new green canes for next year’s crop. Tie in the new canes to the support wires • If you water in the greenhouse, do it early rather than evening to help prevent botrytis • September is a good time to lay turf and grass seed

Plant of the month: Daffodils

I know, I can hear you all saying there a late winter/spring flower. The thing is, now is the time to plant them to give a great display of colour early in the New Year. There are many varieties and colour combinations of yellow, white and orange

INGREDIENTS

Chicken & chorizo jambalaya 1 tbsp olive oil 2 chicken breast, chopped 1 onion , diced 1 red pepper, thinly sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed 75g chorizo , sliced

1 tbsp Cajun seasoning 250g long grain rice 400g can plum tomato Use up 350ml chicken leftover Cajun seasoning stock Cut 2 chicken breasts into strips, mix 1 tbsp of Cajun seasoning with a little oil and rub all over the chicken. Fry for 6-8 mins until golden and cooked through. Serve with guacamole, soured cream, a tub of salsa and some flour tortillas.

1. Heat the oil in a large frying pan with a lid and brown the chicken for 5-8 mins until golden. Remove and set aside. Tip in the onion and cook for 3-4 mins until soft. Then add the pepper, garlic, chorizo and Cajun seasoning, and cook for 5 mins more.

INGREDIENTS

2. Stir the chicken back in with the rice, add the tomatoes and stock. Cover and simmer for 20-25 mins until the rice is tender.

jam roly poly with custard 50g salted butter, cold and cut into chunks, plus extra for greasing 250g self-raising flour, plus extra for rolling 1 vanilla pod, seeds scraped out

50g shredded suet 150ml milk, plus a drop more if needed 100g/4oz raspberry or plum jam, or a mixture custard, to serve

1.Put a deep roasting tin onto the bottom shelf of the oven, and make sure that there’s another shelf directly above it. Pull the roasting tin out on its shelf, fill twothirds with boiling water from the kettle, then carefully slide it back in. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Tear off a large sheet of foil and greaseproof paper (about 30 x 40cm). Sit the greaseproof on top of the foil and butter it. 2.Tip butter, flour and vanilla seeds into a food processor; pulse until the butter has disappeared. Tip into a mixing bowl. Stir through the suet, pour in the milk and work together with a cutlery knife until you get a sticky dough. You may need a drop more milk, depending on your flour.

wrap it tightly. Lift the parcel directly onto the rack above the tin and cook for 1 hr. 4.Let the pudding sit for 5 mins before unwrapping, then carefully open the foil and paper, and thickly slice to serve.

3.Tip the dough out onto a floured surface, quickly pat together to smooth, then roll out to a square roughly 25 x 25cm. Spread the jam all over, leaving a gap along one edge, then roll up from the opposite edge. Pinch the jamfree edge into the dough where it meets, and pinch the ends roughly, too. Carefully lift onto the greased paper, join-side down (you might find a flat baking sheet helpful for this), loosely bring up the paper and foil around it, then scrunch together along the edges and ends to seal. The roly-poly will puff quite a bit during cooking so don’t

Or just, to learn a new language in a very friendly, inexpensive and informal atmosphere. Similar cafes exist all over the U.K.

Falmouth Arts Society is once again staging its annual exhibition of art at the Methodist Church in Falmouth.

T

here will be paintings on display in the foyer and in the hall on the first floor. There is a lift available to save climbing the stairs. FAS always presents a mixture of traditional and contemporary art with prices starting at £25 for unframed paintings and £30 for framed paintings. This year, in the foyer, we will be selling cards for the first time. The cards will all be images of the artists’ work or original designs. Every year we invite the public to take a voting slip with them as they view the exhibition and vote for their

favourite painting. The artist with the most votes is presented with the Packet Trophy at the close of the exhibition. So do come along and enjoy Cornish art at its best.

In the summer, whether or not it’s a decent one, we always see a large number of dogs that just can’t stop scratching themselves, and yet no matter how much the owner battles against fleas and other external parasites, there’s no letup for their dogs. Sometimes it seems at the moment as if almost every dog in the waiting room is there because it’s itchy! So if you can rule out fleas, what’s left – and the answer is that the vast majority of these dogs will have irritated skins as they are allergic to something in their immediate environment, producing a condition known as “atopic skin disease”.

ITCHY DOGS

since gone, and the skin itself is now the source of the continued irritation. It’s important to treat these secondary things, like yeast infections with shampoos, and bacterial infections with antibiotics, so we can see if the itching resolves. But if it doesn’t then we have to accept that an allergic cause is very likely – so how do you diagnose that? How do you identify the substances – called allergens – which are causing this skin inflammation?

An itchy underneath!!

WHAT IS ‘ATOPIC SKIN DISEASE’?

This is an inherited (or thought to be) predisposition to develop allergic symptoms following repeated contact and inhalation of some otherwise harmless substances such as dust mites, or pollens. The chief sign is the unrelenting need of the dog to scratch itself, whether this is with their claws, teeth, or by rubbing against objects. Atopic animals will usually rub, lick, chew, bite or scratch at their feet, muzzle, ears, armpits, or groin, causing hair loss, and severe reddening and thickening of the skin. In some cases this selftrauma causes further changes to the normal skin structure, with excessive skin drying / skin oiliness / bacterial and yeast infections. So by the time I see a dog that’s been itching, particularly if it’s been going on for a bit, the original cause may have long

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

Diagnosis

There are two main ways: (1) intradermal testing, where the dog is injected with small quantities of the most likely irritants, looking for an acute reaction to specific pollens / mites etc; or (2) blood testing. The latter is far less traumatic to the dog, and a single sample can be tested for the dog’s reactivity to several panels of irritants, such as grass pollens, tree pollens, indoor / food mites, the constituents in various dog foods etc.

Treatment

If a blood test or intradermal test is done, and the sorts of allergens which are irritating your dog are identified, then a vaccine can be specially made up – unique to the allergen sensitivity of your dog. Usually 60-70% of animals will improve, something like half having an excellent response, and

the other half with a reasonable response but maybe still needing drug treatment. How it works is that the vaccine is used to fool the dog’s immune system into dealing with artificially large levels of antigens – in the injections, or nowadays also given under the dog’s tongue as droplets – so that when they meet natural levels of allergens their immune systems hardly register them, so the dogs don’t scratch.

Avoidance of the allergens:

this is difficult but various things like washing the pet bedding weekly in the hottest water possible, wiping down your dog with moist cloths after going outside, and frequent bathing, with a non-irritant shampoo like ‘Etiderm’, all reduce chances of the pet coming into contact with the allergens.

Antihistamines:

these work in some atopic dogs, the most widely used example being Piriton, but there has recently been a new drug developed called ‘Apoquel’, which is much more potent and we have used it on numerous dogs with excellent results. It aims to reduce scratching within four hours of taking the first pill! Again, there may be a need to use shampoos and other treatments to get the best results.

Fatty acid supplements:

certain types of oils can reduce allergic symptoms in some patients, and they are believed to work together with antihistamines. In particular, EPO

to advertise call ashley on 07800986216

supplements, or fish oil capsules can work, often in conjunction with a low-fat diet.

Topical steroids:

these are gels or creams that contain a steroid, and which can be applied direct to the skin, particularly on ‘hot spots’. One problem is that if they are applied to hairy areas of the dog they can tend to dry on the fur and create a caked-on crusty layer, under which a skin infection can start up, so these must be applied with care.

Oral steroids:

the mainstay is prednisolone, which works very well, but has potential side effects and is reserved for adult animals, those with short seasonal problems or where other therapy is not possible or is ineffective. Typically, treatment is started at a highish dose, and then tapered off to being given only every other day, or every three days. Cyclosporins: these immunosuppressive agents can be used at low doses to treat allergies successfully in about 60% of patients, and are helpful in lowering dosages of steroids. The major short-term side effect is a gut upset, so they are not ideal, but they have a place in treating this condition. The upshot of it all is, if your dog is scratching itself to pieces, go and seek advice, but be prepared to have to deal with a condition that at best can only be controlled, and probably never cured.

W

ith the average cost of maintaining a home over £600 per month (Thisismoney, 2015), it is something that is often overlooked, resulting in even greater bills. So many TV commercials convince us we can all ‘do it ourselves’ but we often bodge it and buy the wrong products or allow a problem to deteriorate so much it costs twice as much to put right. So why not leave it to a father and son team who pride themselves on helping you maintain your property. Keith Chater spent 15 years, helping to maintain the homes and grounds of Pendra Loweth, Maen Valley before deciding to take all this knowledge by starting up on his own with son Lee. Keith’s previous jobs have set him up well to maintain your home. As a boy he worked part time on the golf course where he lived, clearing bunkers, preparing greens and generally making the entire course look attractive to play. He later worked on the parks department for the council, cutting grass, trimming hedges and lobbing trees. He later went on to carry out some car spraying and took great pride in his work and liked nothing more than seeing a dented, scratched car going out of the body shop, gleaming and like new. I think you’ll agree, he’s one of those enviable chaps who can put his hand to most things around the home, garage and garden. He has always been a perfectionist, a trait his son Lee also has,

so it made sense for them to start on their own. With these two, you really feel like you have your own pair of handymen around as they put their hand to a range of tasks including but not limited to: •Interior and exterior painting and decorating •Tiling •Pressure washing •Fascia and gutter cleaning •General garden maintenance including, lawn mowing, hedge cutting, shrub pruning •Fencing, decking and shed repairs •Carpet and upholstery cleaning •Furniture / leather repairs. Testimonials: Keith has maintained my property for three years. During that time I have come to rely on his expertise, quality of his work and attention to detail. Nicola and Barry Westgate. Keith has undertaken numerous works for us, he is totally dependable, work carried out to a very high standard and competively priced. Fully recommended. Mr & Mrs Bramley. Keith is always our first choice. He is a true ‘handyman’ and his work is always absolutely topnotch. Good value, too. I highly recommend him. Mrs Janet Hosken. Keith is reliable, versatile and always provides excellent value. He has painted our property and done many other jobs for us. We rate him highly! Mr & Mrs Murphy.
