When shopping in a store that enjoys the benefits
of being part of Europe’s Biggest Independent Buying Group, Euronics, you would expect a great deal, price wise, for your products but what you probably wouldn’t expect is the level of customer service that only a family run business can offer. CORNWALL APPLIANCE SERVICES, PENRYN, is a store that has managed to combine a winning combinaaon of great prices and great service, in order to provide a purchasing experience that can be rarely matched. Victoria, Lauren, Alan, Mike, Will, Maa and Nicky are a close knit family that are carrying on the tradiion of being truly customer focused in the supply of free standing and built in household appliance needs. The foundaaons for this high level of service were laid down by the original family owners Alan and Cy Charman, who established the store in 1978 and it connnues to be run by the Charman family to this day.
This commitment to local customers was very evident in the 1980’s when they held regular demonstraaons and phone ins on Radio Cornwall, explaining the benefits of a ground breaking piece of new kitchen technology, the microwave!!!! In not allowing their business to stand ssll or bemoaning the introduccon of the Internet, they have embraced the buying power that being associated with Euronics offers them and now stock a vast range of white goods and electrical appliances at very compeeeve prices. Their knowledge of all products on offer is quickly evident when you visit the large show room and when required, you are given the full aaennon of one of the family members or a knowledgeable member of staff, who demonstrate a clear passion for what they do and what they sell. Add to this FREE DELIVERY, FREE INSALLATION (on most products) and amazing aaer sales service and it doesn’t take long to realize how this store connnues to operate in a highly compeeeve market sector by offering something the internet struggles to, which is a caring, sharing, pride in what they sell, how they sell it and most importantly how you connnue to enjoy it.

BITE WOUNDS AND OTHER NASTIES! how to give your cat a pill safely and effectively. Well, for nearly all cats!
It’s generally held that getting bitten / clawed / kicked / trampled and otherwise assaulted by one’s patient is pretty much always something to be expected in a vet’s life. Yes indeed it is, yet a surprising number of owners also seem to be clawed or bitten, especially by their cats, but are unaware of the potential nasty consequences. CAT SCRATCH FEVER Cats’ mouths are particularly unpleasant places where large numbers of bacteria live quite happily. They don’t affect the cat as such, but thrive on the food debris there, and don’t appear to invade the rest of the cat’s body. The one in question here rejoices in the name Bartonella henselae, (try saying that after a glass or two!), and if it gets through your skin via a very cross cat biting you, it can kick off what in some cases can be a nasty infection. These bacteria are also present on the underside of the cat’s nails, so again, if you are scratched to the point when you bleed, there’s a chance that the Bartonella bacteria will cause an infection. Scarily, too, these bacteria may also be present on cat fur, so it’s possible to contract the disease from petting a cat and then rubbing your eyes. Kittens are more likely than older cats to carry the bacteria and to transmit the infection to humans. SIGNS OF INFECTION In people who have a normal immune system, cat scratch disease is usually not that serious an illness. A small papule (a little raised red lump) may develop at the site of injury, and you may also feel ill with a fever, nausea, vomiting, and no stamina. You might also start showing enlargement of your lymph glands, the wound might get worse, and you may get more lumps flaring up at the injury site. All rather worrying – and not really something that you’d be expecting. We all get scratched and bitten at some point after all! TREATMENT However, the good news is that most cases of
www.falmouthwave.co.uk
cat scratch disease sort themselves out without any further treatment, as your immune system gears itself up to kick the bug out of your body – even though this may take a few weeks or so. But if that’s not happening and the symptoms persist, it’s time for medical advice and your GP may prescribe antibiotics. These are given until the skin lesions resolve, sometimes as long as three to four weeks. Obviously, if you’re on any medication for another sort of condition, or you know that your immune system is not quite what it should be, this bug can cause far more severe problems – and fatalities have been reported. PREVENTION!! The best way to prevent cat scratch disease is to avoid situations in which you might be bitten or scratched by a cat. Don’t play roughly with a cat, and don’t force your attentions on a cat who clearly does not welcome them – and most importantly, if you have any problems giving pills to your cat and you are worried about getting scratched / bitten by your very cross cat, talk to your vet! There may well be other ways around pills such as long-acting injections for instance. Or, use a pill-giver, which is great device! Again, ask your vet – in our practice nurses can show you
In any case, wash your hands thoroughly after playing with a cat. If you are bitten or scratched, wash the affected area well with soap and water. Cats should never be allowed to lick open sores or scratches on your skin. It is not known exactly how cats acquire the infection. Since the Bartonella bug has been found in fleas, many people believe that cats get the bacteria from fleas – so controlling fleas is also recommended as a way to help prevent infection. If you are bitten or scratched by a cat and then develop any symptoms of cat scratch disease, contact your doctor immediately. And the motto of this month’s column is ‘DON’T MESS WITH CATS!’ HORSE BITE WOUND On the same topic, a while ago I was bitten quite badly by a horse. Not its fault, as I did have my hand in its mouth and I was trying to extract a
fairly large incisor tooth – but even so…. I got a deepish wound on a finger and it started to swell quite aggressively, and, more to the point, after 24 hours my usual treatment of red wine and Brufen failed to work. When the swelling had reached my wrist I felt it was time for a more expert opinion, so at 7.30pm on a grotty January evening, I went to Falmouth Minor Injuries Unit where the nurses were just absolutely brilliant – so an enormous thank you to them for their expertise and sense of humour! But it just shows that it’s not necessarily just cats – herbivores can give you a nasty bite too!!

In the Garden
We have loads of new stock growing on nicely inside the polytunnels which will be ready for the coming gardening season. The fruit trees and bushes have been selling well and we still have a good selection, particularly varieties that originate from Cornwall and the South West. Newton’s News
W
inter is always a challenging period, and I want to thank all NHS staff and carers for their hard work and dedication. The NHS reported that, on the Tuesday after Christmas, it had its busiest day ever and that, earlier in December, it treated a record number of patients within four hours. Overall, A & E departments across the country are seeing 2,500 more patients within the four-hour standard every single day compared to 2010. The NHS made significant preparations for this winter, because winter is always a difficult time, including having 3,000 more nurses and 1,600 more doctors in full-time employment. Despite this effort nationally and locally, there remain problems we need to solve.
investment in the NHS and social care system. That is happening. But it’s not just about spending more tax payers money. It is about making smart decisions about how the money is spent.
The truth is that, to solve this problem, we need not only to increase the number of people working in general practice, which is why we are funding the second biggest increase in the number of GPs in the NHS’s Having spent time in the history, but also to increase A&E department at Treliske, the number of carers and shadowing the team there, I saw the support for family carers. for myself the great job they are Ensuring we have enough doing, often under considerable good quality care services is pressure. I also saw that many the responsibility of Cornwall people who came along to A& Council. This is local GPs, sometimes people happening in other parts of the wait too long to see their GPs. country. This would prevent the Sadly, the changes to the GP ‘bed blocking’ we experience contract in 2004 resulted in 90% in Cornwall with all its dreadful of GPs opting out of out-ofknock on consequences, including hours care. But we have been cancelled operations. putting that right. Now 17 million people in England—about 30% As the local NHS consults on of the population—have access their plans for improving our to weekend and evening GP local NHS and care services, appointments. More than that, I will continue to encourage we have committed to a 14% the implementation here of real-terms increase in the GP successful approaches which have budget by 2020. That is an extra been developed in other parts £2.4 billion and that is expected of the country, where the joining to mean an extra 5,000 doctors up of services has improved working in general practice. outcomes for local people. Ultimately, the issue of rising demand for NHS and care services is about demographic change and, as I have been saying for some time, more needs to be done to respond to that change. Over the decade to 2015, we saw a 31% increase in the number of people living to 85 and older. This is a cause for celebration, but sadly it is not matched by an increase in disease-free life expectancy. We know that when people of that age go to A&E at this time of year, there is an 80% chance that they will be admitted to hospital.
Sadly, as we approach the local elections in May, there is a great deal of scaremongering about the future of the NHS and talking down the considerable achievements that have been made. So let me set the record straight. We have more patients being treated and more saying they have been treated safely and with dignity and respect.
Next year the NHS will be 70 years old. I am determined to continue to ensure we have the safest, highest quality care anywhere in the world. When we have difficult winters and an We also know that we will ageing population, of course that need to look after 1 million more makes things more challenging, over-65s in five years’ time and but it also makes me more will need to continue to increase determined.
