Welcome to Falmouth Week! Falmouth Week has grown into the largest sailing regatta in the South West with over 200 yachts racing over eight days along with a lively programme of shoreside events. On the shore there are activities to keep everyone entertained from the fantastic Red Arrows display and themed party nights to samba bands and the Animal Bike Tour Show. In Events Square there are daytime artists and Cornish crafts market, while in the evening you’ll find a great line up of music acts. There are daily live performances on the Prince of Wales Pier featuring music, street theatre and dance> You’ll find a local market and family entertainment all week in the Marquee on The Moor. Watch the Dragon Boat racing close at hand or for the more gung-ho show off your athletic side in The Trident Swim Challenge from Gyllyngvase Beach. Activities for the kids include free rock-pooling sessions and special events at the Maritime Museum, Gyllyngdune Gardens and Pendennis Castle. The best vantage points to view the sailing are: Pendennis and St Mawes Castles, St Anthony Head, Castle Drive and Pendennis Point, Trefusis Point and Flushing. To view the dinghy racing, walk along from Mylor Yacht Harbour towards Restronguet Sailing Club. See www.falmouthweek.co.uk for full programme and ticketing details.

Pink Wiggers Once again
Pink Wig will be kicking off the Falmouth Week shore-side events with the Ladies only charity night on Friday August 5th. The team are delighted with the achievement to date having now raised £55,000 for their chosen charities: The Cornwall Breast Care Team and Breast Cancer Now. With the support of local businesses and the ladies of Cornwall, who attend the event, they are hoping to continue to raise as much as possible and continue the legacy that their Founder Sally Hicks-Wood started. So ladies get your pink wig on and come and join the fun. The ticket only pre-party is sold out and starts at The Greenbank Hotel but this year The Palacio Lounge will also be serving pink wig cocktails throughout the day and evening, with a donation for each drink sold coming to Pink Wig Events so ladies unable to attend The Greenbank can meet there for pre-drinks! The parade will begin at 6:30pm from The Moor with the infamous Marine Band and of course Betty Stogs leading the way through Falmouth town to The Events Square where the ladies will be entertained by Gillian Sadler and Embrace Dance team, DJ Nate, live band The Strutts and Handsome Momento Photobooth. Pink Wig refreshments will be served from the Pink Wig Bubbly Bar and Pink Wig Cocktail Bar. With the ‘retirement’ of our boobs this year we are excited for the ‘unveiling’ of someone new... So don’t miss out get your ticket and tee-shirt from www.pinkwigevents.org.uk

Sarah
newton’s news here is a pressing question here As our weather finally warms T up, news coverage of people living
in fuel poverty melts away like ice in the sun. But, if we are to tackle the issue, we need year-round focus on the cost of heating and electricity in the most deprived areas of the UK. The sad truth is that there are over four million people living in fuel poverty in the UK at the moment, according to the charity National Energy Action. This means that millions of people are living in under-heated homes, which can severely affect their health and put an unnecessary strain on the NHS. In the summer months, while heat may not be as much of an issue, simple things that we often take for granted like using a washing machine, having a warm shower, and boiling water to cook food, are still daily challenges for some people. By the government’s own definition, this means that by simply buying the energy they need for basic necessities, they fall below the official poverty line. Both Labour and Conservative and the last Coalition governments have launched countless initiatives to combat this scourge. But results still lag behind our ambition. In Cornwall, we recognise this is an urgent issue – my own constituency of Truro and Falmouth is among the top 20 constituencies with the least energy efficient households, according to the Association for Conservation of Energy. Our neighbours in St Ives have the least efficient households in England. We also know that those who use prepay energy meters are much more likely to be in fuel poverty. There are about 10 million prepay energy customers in the UK. According to Citizens Advice, they pay on average over £200 more a year than they would on the cheapest direct debit deal. If households don’t have enough money to top up the meter or live in fear of the next bill, then many simply go without energy altogether. I’m determined that we all work together to find a better, fairer deal for millions of households who can’t afford to heat their homes properly. There’s no silver bullet that will eliminate fuel poverty. It’s a complex issue. With the help of the charity Hubbub, I have created a community Facebook page called Fuelling Connections Cornwall. It simply provides lots of useful tips and information about living well and saving money. Do visit the page and share your ideas. I am also championing the use of smart meters – which allow customers to see their energy use in pounds and pence – as they are important weapons in this fight to illuminate fuel poverty. In collaboration with other MPs, I am working with Smart Energy GB, the body responsible for communicating about the smart meter rollout, and also local council members, business leaders and

landlords to better understand the opportunities that new technology presents to help address fuel poverty in Cornwall. We see smart meters as a key part of this. Three million of these new digital energy meters have already been installed. They will be offered free to every home in Britain by 2020. Smart meters replace the antiquated analogue meters and will put an end to ‘estimated billing’ that has caused so much confusion for decades. The absurdity of estimation is demonstrated in Smart Energy GB adverts such as this one: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=eaSte4UGnZE The advantage for customers is that they will have much more control of their use of electricity and gas. Instead of being plunged suddenly into cold and darkness, they will be able to track their costs more accurately and on prepay top up their accounts quickly and easily. I hope this will also take away some of the stigma that constituents tell me can be attached to using prepay for home energy needs. Research by Smart Energy GB has found that over three quarters of people currently using prepayment meters are interested in smart payas-you-go. With smart meters, it will also be possible to obtain much more detailed information about where fuel poverty is biting. When a home suddenly loses power because a resident can’t afford to top-up their account, energy companies will have that information. If a household is found to be frequently disconnecting, this could trigger an intervention by the relevant party. Energy suppliers could then install energy efficiency measures to help the household manage costs. In the future, it will be easier for friends, carers and family members to top-up an account on someone else’s behalf making an energy bill one less thing to worry about. It’ll also be possible to add on winter fuel payments remotely and there will be no need to enter the property to add credit to someone’s energy account. We’ve got to make the most of this new smart technology. Not only can this allow us to start winning the battle against fuel poverty, but also allow us to secure Britain’s future energy supply through digital infrastructure. You can find more information on how to get a smart meter on the Smart Energy GB website.

We have been busy at the nursery as always and we have just completed work on our new hedging area and tree runs so by mid-August we will have loads of trees. There have been a number of items on TV recently regarding plant health and bio-security. At Cornish Garden Nurseries we grow as many of our own plants as possible and buy in from responsible local growers. We do not import or knowingly accept imported plants. to keep them compact Diary for August help • Cut back Herbs to encourage a have finished flowering. This will
