Paul’s Pet Page PAUL COCKERHAM MA, VetMB, PhD, MRCVS

Has over 30 years’ experience in both small animal and large animal veterinary practice and is a senior veterinary surgeon at Rosemullion Veterinary Practice

CATS & DIABETES We see it everywhere nowadays – we’re all tending to eat too much, and the ‘wrong’ sorts of foods, we’re all getting too fat as a consequence, and things like Diabetes Type 2 are becoming increasingly common. And the same sort of thing is also happening in cats. We see far more cats nowadays with “Diabetes mellitus” to give it its proper name, than we did even five years ago, cases which are related to feline obesity – the ‘fat cat’ syndrome! – so this month I’m going to suggest some practical guidelines for keeping a highly contented cat, which maybe, just maybe, will result in a few less podgy felines!

of ‘prey’ substitute, or cat toys, that stimulate hunting behaviour. The old-fashioned piece of string tied to rolled up paper or tin foil, and attached to your ankles (wear trousers!) still works really well, along with ping-pong balls rolled up and down stairs or along window ledges, making the cat jump around and generally increase their agility. Fishing rod toys are great, because they are easy for an owner to use and you can quickly get your cat to dance around on their hind legs(!) – the ‘prey’ is small, and moves both rapidly and unpredictably up and down and from side to side – irresistible to a cat! Pampas grass is also good to use – different textures, swishing noises and lots of Avoiding some of the common strange movements. And laser dots are great for causes of obesity moving around on the walls, up and down stairs Leaving aside the fact that some clinical diseases and outside in the dark – and don’t worry, there’s cause weight gain, cats that do very little in their no chance of an animal getting blinded by one of homes easily gain weight, so you need to make these, so ophthalmologists suggest, as the beam is your home as cat friendly as possible. far too weak. One of the key things here, therefore, is to make Scratching posts are also useful things making sure they lead full and active lives. Now that’s not cats exercise, particularly tall posts, which make easy if you live next to a main road and you’re the cat scratch at full stretch, and you can get afraid of letting your cat outside, because hunting them that have toys dangling off at cat eye is what cats do. height…. Of course the downside is that your Hunting is completely unrelated to feeling hungry, cat might just take to scratching your brand new so by feeding your cat up, to try and persuade leather sofa… or in my case at home, one of the them not to catch birds and shrews and so on, legs of our dining table is about half the thickness or as a substitute for them not going outside, just that it was due to the attention of various moggies won’t work. The cat is a solitary predator, after along the way! Sleeping all, so just think about it – if you waited until you were hungry before hunting for food, and were then unsuccessful, you would probably soon get weaker and weaker and then die. So, the cat is finely tuned to the kill at all times – and when movement and sound combine to attract a cat’s attention, even the most pampered moggy will find it hard to resist the desire to pounce!

Owners of house cats need to use some form

04| FALMOUTH

Now most owners don’t consider that this is a

problem for their cats, and officially, cats should sleep from around 12 to 18 hours per day – good eh?! But, what you may not have considered is that cats like to find their own places to sleep, with a combination of privacy, warmth, and of course being well off the floor, being the business. I’ve met lots of cat owners who have invested in what are absolutely sumptuous cat beds – “the best that Harrods could supply” I was told by one lady I remember! – yet the cat takes one look at them, turns up its nose in the way only a cat can, looks at you with the expression ‘Get real’ and then goes and sleeps on the sofa! Cats always need to feel in control of their lives, and they will often move from one favoured place to another – which behaviour is thought to be related to parasite control in the wild. After all, if you change sleeping spots every so often, you’re not going to recontaminate yourself with parasites. Cats are so wised up aren’t they? So, if your cat sleeps where it wishes, and has the choice of several locations, then it’s going to feel not only in control of its life, but also more content – and will therefore tend NOT to overeat. Anxious and unsettled cats frequently will, or they’ll be fed extra by their owners because they are restless / will not settle / constantly miaowing for attention, and so they start to gain weight. By paying attention to the behavioural needs of your cat you really can have an influence on trying to maximize their exercise and stimulating their normal self-control on the amounts they eat. The message is simple: Hunting / Playing / Sleeping leads to happy and contented cats. Stressed / Bored / Insomniac cats eat more, do less, and their health deteriorates. So if you have any queries over your cat’s behavior or their eating habits, especially if they’re starting to urinate in the house, then talk to your vets: it may be that there is a genuine physical health problem, but it could equally be a sign that all is not well in their world, and they’re doing the cat equivalent of what we do when we’re stressed – we eat cake!

Weigh to go A Falmouth slimmer who lost 4 stone has been named Woman of the Year in her Slimming World group because of her inspiring weight loss. Shelley Brown has lost 4 clothes sizes going from a size 24 down to a 14/16 since January this Year. Around 1 in 4 women in the UK and Ireland are severely overweight and at risk of suffering a range of health problems including diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Photos of Shelley Brown after and before Slimming World’s Woman of the Year recognises the achievements of women in making long-term healthy lifestyle changes. Shelley says “I was very unhappy with my size and I was at a very low ebb emotionally. I tried lots of diets but they usually left me feeling hungry and miserable. With Slimming World it is completely different- I never have to miss out and there is no weighing, measuring or counting and I am NEVER hungry. This is the slimmest I have been for many years and the happiest.” The 41 year old follows Slimming World’s food optimising eating plan, which encourages slimmer’s to fill upon satisfying yet healthy everyday foods like fruit, veg, lean meat and fish, pasta and potatoes, rice, pulses, and more without having to weigh and measure. She says, “ My family and friends are all amazed by how much I can eat

and lose weight. I still eat many of the same meals that I did before I started loosing weight, like spaghetti Bolognese, curries and roast dinners. Now I just prepare and cook them differently - and they taste much better. I’ve picked up lots of new healthy recipes from the other members at my Slimming World group as well. “I know that a lot of people worry about joining a slimming club because they don’t know what to expect. Don’t be afraid, right from the first moment I walked through the door I felt at home, and the support and motivation from my consultant Pauline and the rest of the group has been brilliant. They made me feel so welcome and I look forward to going to group each week, and have made so many new friends. I definitely don’t believe I could have lost all this weight without them. I lost 4lbs in my first week and was blown away that the changes I’d made had such a big impact so quickly. As the weight began to come off and I began moving down dress sizes, I actually started to believe I could actually lose the weight and keep it off. I feel that I have been given my life back and have never felt so happy with myself, my fitness has improved and I’ve got so much more energy, as well as my confidence has soared to new heights.” Pauline who runs the Falmouth groups says, “I am so proud of Shelley. Not only does she look fabulous, she’s improved her health and is bursting with energy. She’s a huge inspiration to everyone in our groups and I hope she inspires other men and women to change their lives in the same way. It can be hard to admit that you need to do something about your weight and to ask for help. Shelley says if you are thinking of joining just go along, it is the best thing ever.” Congratulations also go to Louise Casterton having lost 4 stone, Sharon Cartmel loosing 4 stones, Mandy Richards loosing 2.5 stone, Denise Clark loosing 1.5 stones and Lucy Butterly loosing 5 stones.

FILM REVIEW REEL 1: THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN

The Girl on the Train is the story of Rachel Watson’s life post-divorce. Every day, she takes the train in to work in New York, and every day the train passes by her old house. The house she lived in with her husband, who still lives there, with his new wife and child. As she attempts to not focus on her pain, she starts watching a couple a few houses down - Megan and Scott Hipwell. She creates a wonderful dream life for them in her head, about how they are a perfect happy family. And then one day, as the train passes, she sees something shocking, filling her with rage. The next day, she wakes up with a horrible hangover, various wounds and bruises, and no memory of the night before. She has only a feeling: something bad happened. Then come the TV reports: Megan Hipwell is missing. Rachel becomes invested in the case and trying to find out what happened to Megan, where she is, and what exactly she herself was up to that same night Megan went missing.

REEL 2: INFERNO

After waking up in a hospital room in Florence, Italy, with no memory of what has occurred for the last few days, Robert Langdon suddenly finds himself the target of a manhunt. With the help of Dr. Sienna Brooks and his knowledge of symbology, Langdon will try to escape whilst solving the most intricate riddle he’s ever faced.

Release date: 14th October

REEL 3: TROLLS

From the creators of Shrek comes the most smart, funny, irreverent animated comedy of the year, DreamWorks’ Trolls. This holiday season, enter a colourful, wondrous world populated by hilariously unforgettable characters and discover the story of the overly optimistic Trolls, with a constant song on their lips, and the comedicly pessimistic Bergens, who are only happy when they have trolls in their stomach. Featuring original music from Justin Timberlake, the film stars the voice talent of Anna Kendrick, Justin Timberlake, Russell Brand, James Corden, Kunal Nayyar, Ron Funches, Icona Pop, Gwen Stefani and many more. DreamWorks’ Trolls is a fresh, broad comedy filled with music, heart and hair-raising adventures. In November of 2016, nothing can prepare you for our new Release date: 7th October Troll world.

Garden

At the nursery we have had a very good spring and summer season but now the cold weather is approaching it is time to start thinking about autumn and winter. We have hundreds of ornamental trees of various sizes in stock and bare root Cornish and national fruit trees will be ready late November. • There is still time to plant daffodil and other spring flowering bulbs to give an early splash of colour next year. • If your pots and containers are looking past their best refresh them with some autumn bedding • October is a great month for planting new hedging • Prune climbing and rambling Roses and tie in the stems to prevent wind damage over the next few months • Keep on top of clearing leaves.

Diary for October

This will help to prevent diseases like black spot on Roses and dead patches on lawns • Harvest Apples and Pears. You can tell when they are ready by lifting them in the palm of your hand, a slight twist and a gentle pull and they should come away easily • Any diseased fruit should be removed from the tree and the ground to help prevent disease next year • Wrap glue bands around the

• Cornish Daffodil Bulbs • 150+ Ornamental trees now in stock • Autumn Bedding Plants • Terracotta and Glazed Pots • Large selection of Hedging Plants • Now taking orders for New Season Fruit Trees

trunks of Apple trees to trap winter moth females whose caterpillars shred the spring blossom • If your greenhouse is empty, now is a very good time to clean and disinfect it. • Remove any greenhouse shading to allow maximum light in for the plants you have in it • Try to give the lawn a final mow, trim the edges and a light rake to ease the thatch from the surface.

• New turf can still be laid before the first frost as autumn rain will help to settle the turf in • Collect up fallen leaves and compost in a leaf bin to create leaf mulch. Leaf mulch is a great soil conditioner • The bare root season is nearly here, normally mid-November to mid-March so it is worth planning any new Fruit Trees or Bushes and Ornamental Trees

Plant of the month: Leucothoe Scarletta

A compact evergreen shrub that makes an impact with the beautiful colour of its leaves. Leucothoe is a shrub for shaded or partially shaded areas and likes damp soil. Feed with an ericaceous feed in spring to keep the plant healthy and vibrant.

newton’s news Back to School

We can help!

Along with a loving family, a good education is an important building block for our children’s futures. While learning starts as soon as we are born and it is important to nurture all aspects of development, time in school can shape much of our future chances in life. Given the importance of education not only to each person but to the whole of our society, it is not surprising that it is a policy area that I spend considerable time on. Time listening to local teachers, academics, leaders of schools and colleges, parents, carers and young people. I also listen to local and national employers about future opportunities for our young people. This enables me to represent the views of my constituents with Ministers as they undertake their role of shaping government policy. Over the past six years we have made great strides forward, with more than 1.4 million more children in “good” or “outstanding” schools than in 2010. The academies programme has helped unlock the potential of many schools. This Government is committed to helping all schools enjoy academy status freedoms and school-led system improvement through multi-academy trusts. Conversion to academies in Cornwall has improved educational outcomes for children and young people. The majority of young people are in schools that are academies and Cornwall now has an above average proportion of ‘good’ and ‘outstanding’ schools, and a proven track record of securing improvement. In 2009, 62% of our schools were judged to be ‘good’ or better, and this has risen to over 90% in March 2016. It is well reported that throughout this period school inspections have become tougher. As two members of my family are recently retired teachers, I have seen first-hand how dedicated teachers are to providing a great education. We are fortunate to have highly effective leadership of our two local secondary schools, which have both enabled local young people to achieve excellent results in recent GCSE exams. These results are significantly above the national average and amongst the best results of any school in Cornwall. During a recent conversation with Brett Miners of Falmouth School, I asked him about the success of the school. I thought you would be interested in his response. He summarised the journey over the past three years as being built on a

belief that tolerance and respect coupled with high aspirations, standards and expectations underpin much of what the school does. Aiming each day to give students the highest possible quality of support and in return expect excellent standards of behaviour in and out of the classroom ensures all students have every opportunity to succeed. “This way we can make a real difference.”

www.southwestventilation.co.uk

He went onto say, “We are also determined to make the school a community school. We have increased the use of the building in the evenings and at weekends and we now work with an increasing number of groups who regularly hire the school facilities.” I very much support the new Sports Development Project at Falmouth School, the construction of which is imminent, as it will enable many more local people of all ages to participate in a range of sport. The commitment to ensuring that every child in this country receives a high-quality education and that we narrow the attainment gap between rich and poor is the driving mission of the Government’s education reforms. This Government is putting the interests of ordinary working-class people first. We want this country to be a truly meritocratic country, where what matters most is a person’s individual talent and their capacity for hard work, so we need to build a schools system that works for everyone, not just for the privileged few. The Government wants to build on the progress made over the past six years and make the schools system truly fit for purpose in the 21st century. The current “Schools that work for everyone” consultation is about engaging with as many views as possible so that we can design policies that make the most of the expertise that we already have, and widen access to good and outstanding school places for all. There is so much potential in our country, and that talent base needs us to ask the big questions, leaving no stone unturned so that we can build a schools system that truly works for everyone.

INGREDIENTS

mexican tortilla bake For the mince

1 tbsp. olive oil 2 large onions, chopped 500g/1lb 2oz beef mince 1 mild red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 1 red pepper, de-seeded and diced 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tbsp. ground cumin 1 tbsp. ground coriander 2 tbsp. tomato purée 1–2 tbsp. mango chutney 2 x 400g tins chopped tomatoes 1 small bunch fresh coriander, chopped salt and freshly ground black pepper

To assemble

3 large tortilla wraps 250g/9oz full-fat mascarpone 100g/3½oz mozzarella, grated 100g/3½oz cheddar

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

If your mascarpone is firm, you might find it easier to spread the mascarpone on each tortilla first before adding to the dish. If covered and chilled in the fridge, you can assemble this dish up to 6 hours ahead. Simply bake at 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6 for 25 minutes, or until golden and bubbling. If uncooked and covered, this dish freezes very well. 1. Preheat the oven to 160C/140C Fan/Gas 3. 2. Pour the oil into a large oven-proof frying pan over a medium heat, add the onions and fry for 3 minutes. Turn up the heat, add the mince and fry until brown, breaking the meat up with a wooden spoon and stirring occasionally. 3. Add the chilli, red pepper, garlic and spices and fry for 5 minutes, or until all the moisture has evaporated and the mixture is quite dry. Stir in the tomato purée, mango chutney, tinned tomatoes and salt and black pepper. Cover with a lid, bring to the boil and transfer to the oven to simmer for an hour.

4. Remove from the oven and stir in half the coriander. Increase the oven temperature to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6. 5. Spread a third of the cooked mince beef mixture over the bottom of the oven-proof dish and lay one tortilla wrap on top. Spread a third of the mascarpone (see tip) over the tortilla and sprinkle with a third of each of the mozzarella and Cheddar cheeses. Repeat twice more so you have 3 layers. 6. Bake in the oven for about 25 minutes until golden-brown and bubbling. Set aside for 5 minutes before serving and garnish with the remaining coriander.
