Portreath to Devoran to The Mineral Tramway Trail A 14 mile cycle route along a mainly traffic free cycle trail with a mixed surface along the way.

Schoose, New Portreath Road, Redruth TR16 4QL

Tel: 01209 843815

The cycle route takes you from Portreath on the North Cornwall coast to Devoran situated on the South Cornwall Coast near to Falmouth which follows the route of The Portreath Tramroad and the Redruth and Chasewater railway line. This is Cornwall so you will encounter hills along the route. Cycle hire is available in the area from Bike Chain Bike Hire near Bissoe on the trail and Devoran Creek Cycle Hire , St.Johns Terrace, Devoran. Portreath is a small fishing village on the north Cornwall coast and the name of the village means ‘ sandy cove’. In the 19th century, Portreath was one of the main ports for sending the copper ore mined in the area to Swansea for smelting. Starting from Harbour Terrace on the harbour side in Portreath cycle along the Tramway Trail which starts in the middle of the trees on the opposite side of the road to the harbour. Along the route follow the signs for The Tramway Trail. The first section of the trail takes you up along through the hedges on either side of the trail which seem to form a natural tunnel as you head towards Wheal Rose. At Wheal Rose the trail bends and takes you along past Scorrier. From here you start to pass through some of Cornwall’s historic mining areas and you can see granite way-marks with the mining shaft names marked on them. As you cycle along the trail is uneven in places and takes you through Unity Woods. After the woods the trail takes you through the Poldice valley which was once the richest square mile in the whole world. As you cycle along you will see the old Arsenic works which is being restored. Whilst in Poldice take a while to explore the nearby mountain bike trails which are said to be some of the finest off road trails in Cornwall. Following the Carnon River through Twelveheads and on to Bissoe where the arsenic works are still standing. After Bissoe the trail passes under Brunels Stumps and the replacement viaduct and onto the old port at Devoran which is approximately 2 miles from Bissoe . Devoran once had an important role in the tin and copper mining industry. It developed in to a small port exporting mined minerals.

Sarah

newton’s news T

here is a pressing question here in Britain that’s posing a real dilemma to politicians: how do we share the economic recovery more equally across all of society? So much is made in the media of the expanding super-rich and their houses and yachts, when for the vast majority just owning their own small home is a big challenge. The quiet insistance that this inequality be comprehensively addressed can only grow as anger about it festers. For some of us lifelong Conservatives, it is also prompting a painful question. Is the free market we cherish and nurture distributing its spoils in a morally defensible way? Capitalism is supposed to cascade wealth down, so why does it seem to be cascading up? To make my point, the typical FTSE company chief executive now makes 183 times more than their average employee, and some take home even more. But it hasn’t always been like this. The ratio of FTSE 100 chiefs’ pay to that of average workers has jumped significantly since the millennium turned. In 1998 the multiple was only (if ‘only’ can be the right word) 47 times. And these ‘average’ employees are themselves typically paid up to four times what the office cleaners get. These chief executives are, of course, few in number. They would argue they do a skilled job and the companies they run would add that if they didn’t pay so much, they couldn’t hire the top talent to drive companies forward to create jobs and prosperity. It’s also true that under capitalism, over the long term, we’ve almost all got much richer. Capitalism has delivered us technology and medical breakthroughs that were only fantasies to our predecessors. Of course, this is all well and good, but now society rightly finds grotesque such disparities of income so lavishly displayed. People simply won’t stand for it and all politicians, are going to have to take that as a given. So, what to do to address this dilemma? Well, since 2010 there has been some progress in closing the gap. We saw a reduction in inequality in the wake of the financial crisis, driven by large income falls at the top. More encouragingly, we have seen a recent return to wage rises and, crucially, faster earnings growth of the lowest incomes. These earnings

12| FALMOUTH

increases, combined with swift rises in employment, have meant income gains for the bottom outpacing the top. The new National Living Wage is also something that will start to improve the situation over the long term. But the ratio of typical workers’ pay to chief executives in most large companies and some public sector organisations is still difficult to explain by market forces alone. And it’s not something unique to Britain. In America, the average CEO makes 354 times more money than the average employee. In Germany, CEOs make a comparatively reasonable 147 times more money than workers. I don’t know how people in those countries feel about the situation, but I hope Britain may soon be a beacon of hope when it comes to excessive executive pay. The recent news that BP shareholders voted against the huge pay rise of their CEO is welcome and builds on the so called “Shareholder Spring” of 2012 where a number of large British firms were similarly challenged about pay. Back in 2014 Vince Cable gave shareholders more power over executive pay. I firmly believe it’s time the Government revisited shareholder power and gave them more tools to help them exercise it. Requiring all FTSE 100 companies to report on top-to-bottom as well as top-to-median earners’ pay scales would be a good start, and lead to transparency that has been lacking. When large employers were asked to tackle another type of inequality, that of gender pay gaps, a similar approach was used and is beginning to have a good effect. So this CEO/employee pay inequality is a bellwether of how things should not be because the high skills, high pay economy opportunities must be open to all. It makes it clear we must shape future growth so that the vast majority see their living standards rise in line with the nation’s economic growth because that is vital to delivering a One Nation Conservative government.

INGREDIENTS

the ultimate salmon en croute 3 tbsp olive oil 2 large shallots, finely chopped 140g chestnut mushroom, finely chopped 3 garlic clove, finely chopped juice of ½ a lemon 100g packet of watercress, chopped

1. Heat 2 tbsp of the oil in a large non-stick frying pan. Tip in the shallots and fry for 2-3 mins to soften, then add the mushrooms and garlic, and stir-fry over a high heat for another 3-4 mins, or until the mushrooms and shallots are golden and any liquid from the mushrooms has evaporated.

2 tbsp snipped dill 1 tbsp snipped chive 2½ tbsp half fat crème fraîche 6 sheets filo pastry each about 38 x 30cm (125g total weight) 2 x 350g skinned salmon fillet Pour in the lemon juice – after a few seconds, that should have evaporated too. Remove from the heat, then stir in the watercress so it wilts in the warmth from the pan (see step 1). Stir in the dill and chives, and season with a little salt and pepper. Leave to cool. 2. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Line a baking sheet with baking parchment. When the mushroom mix is cool, stir in the crème fraîche. Lay one of the filo sheets on the worktop with the short end facing you. Brush all over with a little of the remaining oil. Layer up 4 more of the filo sheets in the same way, brushing each with a little of the oil. 3. Lay one of the salmon fillets, skin-side up, across the width of the filo, positioning it about one-third of the way up. Season it with pepper. Spoon and spread the cooled mushroom mix over the top of the fillet (see step 2). Lay the other salmon fillet

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

A super healthy version of the classic pastry wrapped fish parcel without losing the WOW factor! on top, skin-side down. Season again. Fold the short end of pastry nearest to you over the salmon, then bring the other end over to completely enclose the salmon (see step 3), lifting it so the join can tuck under it. Fold both pastry ends over as neatly as you can. 4. Brush the outside with a bit more of the remaining oil. Scrunch up the last sheet of filo, pressing it lightly on top in big folds (see step 4), then carefully brush with the last of the oil. Can be prepared 3-4 hrs ahead up to this point and chilled. Transfer the salmon parcel to the baking sheet. Bake for 25 mins until the pastry is crisp and golden. Check while it cooks and if the top starts to brown too quickly, lay a sheet of foil very loosely over it. Remove from the oven and let the salmon sit for 2-3 mins before slicing.

Regain Control of Your Life A

cer Life Solutions have opened up a new Hypnotherapy suite at The Carrick Business centre Commercial Road Penryn. Lead therapist and proprietor Michael Holt was most pleased with the initial response and interest shown at the opening night. The opening was performed by Belinda Lazenby, the Penryn based actress, writer, producer and owner of A2B theatre company. The opening was attended by The Mayor of Penryn Mr Mark Snowdon, Vice Chair of Cornwall Council Mrs Mary May, Dr Peter Garland (the real doc martin), Fellow therapist and trainer Mr Martin Webster and many other friends and colleagues. The evening was informal, informative and gave an insight into Hypnotherapy and the ways it may be used in a way to produce long lasting positive outcomes to many and varied problems, issues and behaviours. Michael has been a qualified therapist for over 5 years. Utilising Hypnotherapy NLP and CBT to the benefit of clients as far afield as London, Manchester, Plymouth and of course Cornwall even recently in India.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a natural normal and safe that is a very effective way of dealing with many psychological and emotional issues. Put simply Hypnosis is merely the natural harnessing of focused thought. It is what we focus on that provides us with an emotional response. Imagine

being on a beautiful beach, your favourite holiday destination or winning a sporting event, both will involve trance state of some description. Therefore when this trance state is appropriately used in a therapeutic setting it can be most helpful for the client and help to make lasting Positive change. When YOU enter hypnosis on the therapist couch, you are in a relaxed, pleasant but concentrated state where you have a much-heightened awareness. It can be said that our brains are more active and alert at night when, for example we are dreaming. Therefore when we replicate this dream like state on the therapists couch, the subconscious more open and susceptible to a positive suggestion and therapeutic change. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is the combination of modern scientifically researched talking therapies and Trance, all of which helps to aid in positive change. By giving the client the understanding of why they feel the way they do and importantly, what we can do about it. We learnt leave our problems in the passband focus on the SOLUTIONS thus allowing us to move forward with greater confidence and happiness. Each session lasts for 1 hour. As hypnotherapy is tailored to the needs of the individual client, the number of sessions required will be discussed in full at the initial consultation.

PENRYN 800 YEAR CELEBRATION enryn is one of Cornwall’s oldest Market Towns, cited in doomsday book in 1086 as the manor of ‘Trewel’, (Treliever). Today the area of Penryn is much smaller but it would once have extended as far as Mylor and would have taken in Falmouth, Budock, Mawnan, Mabe, Constantine and Manaccan and beyond.

Pthe

In days gone by the establishment of a settlement was only considered possible when there were adequate trees and water. Penryn’s location close to the sea not only offered access to a valuable food supply but also easy access to sailing trade. Protection from invaders was also highly important and this security came from the settlements situation by the river surrounded by a high wall of trees. St Gluvias Church, although very different to the building we see today, along with the lost fortification known as ‘Round Ring’, indicates that the first settlements would have been on that side of the River. In 1216 Simon of Apulia, a medieval Canon, Lawyer and Bishop of Exeter, saw that a small community was forming in the area, seeing the potential he supported this community by developing the area further, separating it from the rest of the wider manor of Treliever, and laying the foundations that made it possible for future Bishops and Royalty to grant a number of charters that would see the Borough become a thriving Market Town and prosperous Port. And so this year the Town of Penryn celebrates the actions of Bishop Simon, by hosting a number of events throughout the year.

CELEBRATING 2 YEARS M

ay I let you into a little secret, there is a little hideaway venue that is run by a very friendly and sociable host who was taught to cook by her mum; has a lifetimes experience of catering; serves delicious food sourced from fresh Cornish produce; has yummy homemade cakes; freshly made sandwiches; and a menu that is extensive enough to satisfy even the most fussy eaters; and all this on our doorsteps just behind Millers garage on the Tregoniggie Industrial estate.

Owner Dawn Watson & her colleague Kat

The Bickland café, owned and run by Dawn Watson is just about to celebrate its

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

Fresh is Best! two year anniversary and the passion with which Dawn runs the place is as evident today as it was on the very first day she opened. Originally starting business with her daughter Laura, who has since left to have a baby, Dawn brought with her a wealth of catering knowledge. Much of this knowledge of food was passed on by her mother and her grandfather, who grew fresh produce from his two allotments. Park your car outside or stop by after a walk in Tregoniggie Woods (dogs most welcome) and once you enter what first strikes you is that this little hide away café is home to a bright and airy room, open plan kitchen, spotlessly clean environment and the smell of freshly cut flowers. Once you place your order Dawn and Kat will happily chat away whilst preparing your choices, if there is any such thing as happy food, then this is it. Dawn will proudly chat to you about her foody upbringing or discuss the daily news events that are constantly flowing from the news channel on the TV at the back of the café. If it is a little piece and quiet you are after you can bury your head in the daily papers, watch the TV or take yourself away to the outside seating area.

Just the range of services the café provides is evidence of just how hard she works to make it a success and how much pride she takes in it. Not only is she there on a daily basis to satisfy her regular customers with breakfast, lunch and a chit chat, she also offers hearty breakfasts for stag and hen parties. Buffets, takeaways and pre ordering is also available, and if this isn’t enough you can book the café as a function room facility, with Dawn and her team providing the catering (bring your own alcohol). There are no exceptions to whom Dawn will have a chin wag with, evidenced by the various dogs and children that are all welcomed at this gem of a Friendly Bella hideaway café. SLIMMERS LOSE LBS AND RAISE £’S FOR CHARITY!

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

Caring members of the Falmouth and Mabe Slimming World groups have collected 162 bags of clothes they’ve successfully slimmed out of to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Pauline who runs the Falmouth groups and Pam in the Mabe group, have encouraged members, their friends and families to spring clean their wardrobes and collect the clothes, shoes and accessories they’ve successfully slimmed out of to generate valuable stock for the Falmouth Cancer Research UK shop. The groups were taking part in the organisation’s national fundraising campaign, the Big Slimming World Clothes Throw. Last year this campaign raised £ 1.7 million FOR Cancer Research uk, and this year aims to raise £2m for the charity. With each bag worth upto £25, Pauline and Pam hopes the contribution from their Falmouth and Mabe groups will help to reach that total. Pauline and Pam agree that our members have amazed us with their enthusiasm, dedication and commitment once again! This year’s Big Clothes Throw has been a fantastic success, and we can’t believe just how many bags our members have managed to collect. Its been so rewarding and we are so proud to help pull together such a phenomenal amount of stock for such a worthwhile cause. Knowing they’ll never need their “before” clothes again, our members couldn’t wait to take part. Not only is the Clothes

to advertise call ashley on 07800986216

Throw a perfect opportunity for all of us to celebrate our slimming success, it is also vital we spread the message that keeping a healthy weight could reduce the risk of developing ten different types of cancer. This is why Slimming World chose Cancer Research UK as our national charity partner. We really hope our bag collection will help to increase understanding of how weight affects cancer risk. “ Our group sessions are always buzzing and when we collected the bags the atmosphere was incredible. Our members have seen stunning weight losses simply by making small changes to the way they shop, cook, and eat, and by taking steps to become more active. The best thing about our groups is the caring support members give to each other, spurring each other along and sharing recipes and tips each week. Shelley Brown , a member who has lost 3.5 stones so far since joining in January says “ it felt really liberating to donate all my old clothes. I actually enjoyed bagging them up and saying goodbye for ever- it felt like saying good bye to the old me! I absolutely love going shopping and choosing whatever I like. Thanks to Pauline, my group and Slimming World I know that the new me is here to stay! I feel so much fitter, more confident, and I’m healthier than ever too. Its great to know that the money raised from my donated items will go towards research to find better ways to treat cancer. “

This month I thought I would discuss the diseases that we vaccinate dogs against in this country. We, as vets, encourage vaccination as a routine procedure, and many dog owners regularly respond to reminders we send out, bringing their pets in for their “annual jab”, but are often a bit hazy as to the diseases we’re dealing with.

SO, WHAT’S IN A “JAB”?

The chief diseases we protect against are canine parvovirus, distemper (‘hardpad’), and leptospirosis. So let’s have a look at these diseases in more detail, what they do, whether they occur in Falmouth / Cornwall, and why vaccination is a good thing.

CANINE PARVOVIRUS

This is a real nasty one, be in no doubt. WHAT ARE ITS SYMPTOMS? The majority of cases are in dogs less than 6 months old, with the most severe cases in puppies younger than 12 weeks of age. There is an acute gastro-enteritis, with vomiting, severe bloody diarrhoea, and rapid dehydration. The disease will often progress very rapidly and it can cause death as early as two days after the signs are first seen.

HOW IS PARVOVIRUS DISEASE TREATED?

It’s really just supportive therapy. Replacing fluids lost through vomiting and diarrhoea is probably the single most important treatment via an intravenous drip, and in severe cases blood transfusions may be necessary. Antibiotics are usually given, and there may well be a need to treat ‘shock’, as well as drugs to stop the vomiting. Cutting out the food during treatment is often necessary, so dogs may need to be fed via the drip line. However, even with the most intensive round-the-clock-care – and that sort of thing at Rosemullion is what our nurses and vets are most proud of: we don’t shut up shop of an evening – there is a high mortality rate. Put bluntly, a lot of affected

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

DOG VACCINATIONS – WHY WE DO IT!

animals die.

HOW DO THEY CATCH IT? The chief problem with parvo is that the virus itself is extremely stable – in other words it withstands dry conditions, a lot of disinfectants, heat, etc. And, more to the point, bloody diarrhoea is a great way of spreading the virus around into the environment! With dry weather, too, it means there is a distinct risk of dogs picking up the virus, as it hasn’t been washed away or diluted by rainfall as we normally might have it. Vaccination is key therefore: parvo is out there – we see it every year, and it is not only worrying and expensive to treat, but potentially fatal.

CANINE DISTEMPER / HARDPAD

This is an equally nasty viral condition, though we don’t see it in Falmouth much now.

WHAT ARE ITS SYMPTOMS?

Young, unvaccinated puppies and nonvaccinated older dogs tend to be most susceptible to the disease. They develop a nasty fever, have reddened eyes, and a watery discharge from the nose and eyes. There’s a persistent cough, vomiting and diarrhoea, and a severe loss of weight; and later on, the virus starts attacking the brain and spinal cord and the dog may start having seizures. Distemper is sometimes called “hard pad disease” because sometimes the virus can cause a strange enlargement or thickening of a dog’s pads. However, whatever the symptoms, and despite whatever supportive treatment you can give – such as i/v fluids, antibiotics, anti-shock therapy etc – death follows more often than not.

HOW DO THEY CATCH IT?

The virus spreads through aerosol droplets and contact with infected bodily fluids, like discharges from

the nose and eyes, faeces, and urine – pretty much everything therefore – and that’s the basic problem. However, there are one or two good points. It’s a disease of urban dogs – dog populations that have got out of control in cities are a real nightmare, spreading it to the local pets who walk the same streets / exercise in the same parks. So in Falmouth we’re fortunate in it not being a great problem, but of course dogs go into kennels, where they meet dogs from other areas, and they go up country to Plymouth, London and other cities, and dogs from up country come down here….You can see the risk no doubt. Vaccination is crucial therefore, and excellent immunity is gained from a basic course and revaccination.

LEPTOSPIROSIS

I’m sure you’re getting the gist by now, but this is another nasty condition – and more to the point, you can contract it too.

WHAT ARE ITS SYMPTOMS?

It’s caused by a bacteria which is shaped like a corkscrew, which literally screws its way into your pet’s membranes – eyelids, lips, gums etc, or via an open wound or bite – and then spreads rapidly through the blood stream, usually causing high fevers, depression and joint pain. The picture shows a microscopic view of these bacteria: you can imagine how they screw themselves into your body!

Scarily, leptospira produce powerful poisons that attack the liver and kidneys, leading to failure of these organs. When the liver’s been damaged, the dog’s skin may take on a yellowish, jaundiced tinge, and show all the symptoms of hepatitis. When it’s the kidneys there’s weight loss, vomiting and a hefty thirst.

to advertise call ashley on 07800986216

IS THERE A DANGER I COULD CATCH IT?

Unlike distemper and parvo, which we can’t catch, you can also become ill, experiencing many of the symptoms outlined above: it’s Weil’s disease. The most common ways people contract leptospirosis is from exposure to infected dog or rat urine, as rats (and other animals) can keep the bacteria in their kidneys and pee it out. Obviously, dogs like to investigate where rats have been, and areas of stagnant water such as ditches, where rats often live, then it is a major contaminant. Again, like the risk of parvo, when it hasn’t rained for a bit, it’s quite concentrated, a bigger risk for your dog picking it up. Although your dog may require intense care (just like for parvo) to get them through the disease, a few pets make a full recovery. On the other hand, others go on to suffer chronic kidney or liver failure (just like you if you catch it), neither of which is curable.

THE GOOD NEWS!

Vaccination again is key to the safety of your pet. However, the problem with vaccination is that the immunity it gives your dog is not that great: it lasts around a year only (and sometimes less) and there are lots of strains of this type of bacteria out there that your dog needs to be vaccinated against. Annual vaccination against Lepto is a MUST therefore! There are rats, your dogs will find them, and, more to the point, they WILL get contaminated by their urine: sadly, we see cases of Lepto every year. Can you stop your dog having contact with rats, and where rats have been? Keep them safe – keep them jabbed! All photos reproduced courtesy Wikipedia Creative Commons licenses.
