Paul’s Pet Page PAUL COCKERHAM MA, VetMB, PhD, MRCVS

Has over 30 years’ experience in both small animal and large animal veterinary practice and is a senior veterinary surgeon at Rosemullion Veterinary Practice I don’t know whether it’s me, and I’ve been unfortunate recently in seeing more than my fair share of cases of poisonings, but these seem for some reason to be on the increase. It may just be that the pet-owning public are far more likely than ever before to look something up on Google – and then what they find scares the living daylights out of them – so they quickly ring us up for advice! Anyway, I thought it would be topical in this issue to cover a few things ‘out there’ which are well known as being potentially toxic to dogs, and maybe a few which you’d never appreciated as may cause harm.

ONIONS

Hot dogs and burgers are often on sale at events in the autumn but the onions which go with them are potentially toxic to dogs. In fact all vegetables like this – onions, spring onions, leeks, garlic and chives – and it doesn’t matter if they are cooked or raw (and let’s face it, yer average Labrador isn’t that bothered either way) contain a chemical which causes anemia by destroying large numbers of red blood cells. So, along with the vomiting and diarrhoea you get the signs of anaemia as well: depression, weakness, pale membranes and rapid shallow breathing. Treatment is generally to support the body systems while the anaemia improves: fluids via a drip line, and activated charcoal into the guts to mop up any remaining irritant chemicals. The trouble with diagnosing and treating this condition is that the signs only come on several days after the onions were eaten, so it’s not always easy to make the connection.

POISONING CASES!

whether cooked in fruit cakes, or raw, as in a bag of raisins that a Labrador just happens to have found in a kitchen cupboard… The signs of abdominal discomfort / colic are seen pretty quickly, and in dogs that are brought to us promptly we can easily make them vomit and bring up all the fruit. Using a drug called ‘apomorphine’ which has a spectacular vomiting effect on dogs, once this has kicked in pretty much everything the dog has eaten over the past hour reappears, and so it is stopped from being absorbed by the gut. Not particularly pleasant for the dog admittedly, but much better than suffering the effects of raisin poisoning – acute gastro-enteritis, followed by the strong possibility of kidney failure. The way in which raisins and grapes produce these effects isn’t known, so again, intensive supportive treatment with fluids is the only option sometimes.

CHOCOLATE

This is a well-known risk, and we see many cases of this throughout the year, particularly at Christmas, for obvious reasons! Prising the lid off a tin of Quality Street, for instance, is the work of an idle moment for some dogs, and they’re not over fussy about whether there are soft centres, nuts or toffees, the lot gets eaten, wrappers and all!

The worst cases of poisoning involve eating either milk or plain chocolate, particularly whole bars of the stuff, as these contain the greatest amounts of cocoa powder. And it’s that which causes the theobromine poisoning – the substance in the cocoa that dogs can’t handle – resulting in an absolutely massive overstimulation of the heart, together with seizures and kidney problems. Of course those dogs which are really out to cause themselves problems pick chocolate raisins as the food of choice – a doubly toxic whammy!

UNUSUAL POISONINGS

Fireworks – dogs will sometimes eat spent fireworks, which still contain some sodium chlorate, and that can cause irritation to the guts Light sticks / luminous necklaces – dogs will sometimes bite into these if they are discarded on the floor and absorb the chemicals which produce the light. Nothing much to worry about generally, though again there is colicy discomfort and lots of drooling. Mushrooms – beware these, as the same effects occur in dogs as can in people. That applies to the magic variety as well! Antifreeze – now is the season when people drain their car radiators and refill with antifreeze solution. Dogs find this quite sweet and will happily drink the stuff, even when it’s diluted with water. Fortunately, this is one poison where there is a definite antidote: intravenous alcohol!! Horse wormers – if you’re a horse owner and worm your horse orally with a paste like Pramox, and the like, beware that for a few days after, your horse’s droppings are potentially toxic to any dog that might find them just what he needs on a cold winter’s morning. The levels of the wormer passed through the gut of the horse can be substantial, and quite poisonous to dogs. The best advice is that if ever you are in any doubt about whether your dog has eaten something potentially poisonous, ring the surgery pronto – remember, we have one of our own nurses answering the phone 24/7, you’re not put through to some out-of-hours answering service.

There is a pretty high public awareness of the poisonous effects of these on dogs, again

Again, fortunately, owners are primed to act if and when this happens, and one of the first things we do is to use apomorphine to make the contents of the tin reappear. Although this is rather less than palatable than the first time round, sometimes the dog is suitably keen to give it another go…

newton’s news

I

am delighted that Falmouth has made it onto the shortlist of Great British High Street Competition, in the coastal communities category.

Wedding Gowns ● Plus Sizes Suit Hire for any Occasion Accessories ● Sale Rail from £150 www.b2bbridal.co.uk Tel: 01326 316000

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

This year’s competition saw a record 900 entries across all 14 categories, including the new categories for individuals and shops. Now the shortlist has been drawn up, you have the chance to vote directly for your best-loved high street online - Falmouth of course! This is a terrific achievement for the team that works day in and day out to improve our town. The town team of Richard Gates and Richard Wilcox are supported by a wide range of people from Falmouth Town Council staff to Paul Wilcox of Cornwall Marine Network and Henrietta Boex of Falmouth Gallery. I was particularly pleased to be amongst those that nominated Falmouth for this award. As you can imagine, I work closely with many organisations across my constituency and am always impressed by the teamwork and partnership that the two Richards inspire and work hard to deliver. If Falmouth wins, Falmouth high street businesses will benefit from a share of the prize pot worth £100,000 and expert training from Google’s digital taskforce for shops, bars and restaurants and a trip to Twitter UK’s London office to further boost their social media skills. The Great British High Street Competition 2016 celebrates the great work that is being done to revive, adapt and diversify the nation’s high streets. It is one of a number of initiatives to help champion high streets as the cornerstones of the community. The Government is helping local business communities adapt to the changing face of high streets, with a £6.7 billion package of business rates support, to cut the rates for 900,000 businesses – with 600,000 now paying none at all. The second Great British High Street competition last year saw 230 entries and attracted over 200,000 public votes, with Bishy Road in York, a former finalist, crowned Britain’s best. Bishy Road found that winning not only boosted town pride, but also had a tangible economic impact with retailers reporting increased footfall. Voting is an incredibly important part of our campaign because, along with a visit from expert judges, it makes up 50% of the final decision as to who should be crowned the Great British High Street of the

year. Members of the public can vote by visiting this website http:// thegreatbritishhighstreet.co.uk/ high-street-of-the-year-award. It has never been more important to spread the word about the amazing work that is going on here in Falmouth. A person is allowed one vote per day in each category, which will be registered through the website using their email addresses. For the digital category, votes will be counted through Twitter using the hashtag #BestGBTwitterShop plus the @ handle of the shortlisted shop. This year the voting period has been shortened to run for one month, from 18th October to 18th November, as this allows time for people to get involved with the campaign as well as avoiding the very busy lead up to Christmas. My great grandmother and grandfather lived above the family business, a shop on High Street in Falmouth. Falmouth town centre is still as important to the community now as it was then. It’s the life and soul of Falmouth, so please do your bit to help Falmouth win. We have seen many changes to Falmouth town centre and I feel that much progress has been made in recent years. With so much competition from online retailing it is very challenging times for our high street businesses so we need to build on this progress to help them adapt to the needs of modern life. Reaching the finals is already a great achievement and rightly recognises the terrific work of the whole community that support Falmouth. However winning this competition has important benefits and I believe will attract more visitors to the town. So get involved - you could help spread the word or put up a poster or join a clean up Falmouth event before the judges arrive and most important to get voting!

Garden

I can’t believe how quickly this year has gone, November already! Now is a good time to get those pre winter jobs finished before the worst of the winter weather sets in. At the nursery we are preparing for one of our busiest times, Christmas Trees. I am pleased to say, for the 3rd year running, there are no price rises. • Now is a good time to plant Magnolias so you get the benefit of the beautiful spring flowers • Keep on gathering up rose leaves to help prevent infections like blackspot next year • Clear away old foliage from herbaceous perennials and lift and divide any overcrowded clumps. This helps to keep the plants vigour so giving a better

Diary for November

display • Lift parsnips after they have had a frost so this helps the flavour • Divide Rhubarb once they are dormant • November is the best time to spread manure on the veggie plot to give maximum time for it to rot down over the winter • Stake large cabbages, cauliflower etc. to prevent

them rocking in the wind. It is also worth covering them with a net to prevent the birds from eating them • The bare root fruit season starts from late November and goes through to mid-March. This is by far the best time for planting fruit trees and bushes • Check stored fruit regularly and remove any bad ones straight away • Apple and Pear trees can

be pruned from December onwards but they must be fully dormant before pruning starts • Keep clearing fallen leaves off the lawn. I know it is a bit of a repetitive job but it is important to do to avoid dead spots on the lawn and to keep it healthy • Raise pot plants off the floor to prevent waterlogging • Clean garden tools and wipe with linseed oil to prevent rust

Plants of the month Coming into the winter, it has to be trees and fruit trees. The best time to plant trees is the winter when they are dormant. Fruit trees are a great asset to the garden. Blossom, edible fruit and good for wildlife. By selecting smaller root stocks or a trained tree fruit trees can be suitable for even small gardens

• Bare root fruit trees and bushes available late November • Good selection of Cornish Apple and Plum Trees • Now taking orders for Christmas Trees • Over 150 Ornamental Trees now in stock • National Garden Gift Vouchers Tel: 01872 864380

FILM REVIEW REEL 1: The Accountant

Cast - Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal, Anna Kendrick

Christian Wolff (Affleck) is a math savant with more affinity for numbers than people. Behind the cover of a small-town CPA office, he works as a freelance accountant for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations. With the Treasury Department’s Crime Enforcement Division, run by Ray King (J.K. Simmons), starting to close in, Christian takes on a legitimate client: a state-of-the-art robotics company where an accounting clerk (Anna Kendrick) has discovered a discrepancy involving millions of dollars. But as Christian uncooks the books and gets closer to the truth, it is the body count that starts to rise.

REEL 3: Bad Santa 2

Cast - Christina Hendricks, Billy Bob Thornton, Kathy Bates

BAD SANTA 2 returns Billy Bob Thornton to the screen as America’s favorite antihero, Willie Soke. Fueled by cheap whiskey, greed and hatred, Willie teams up once again with his angry little sidekick, Marcus (Tony Cox), to knock off a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve. Along for the ride is ‘the kid’ - chubby and cheery Thurman Merman (Brett Kelly), a 250-pound ray of sunshine who brings out Willie’s sliver of humanity. Mommy issues arise when the pair are joined by Academy Award, Golden Globe and Emmy-winner Kathy Bates, as Willie’s horror story of a mother, Sunny Release date - 4th November Soke. A super butch super bitch, Sunny raises the bar for the gang’s ambitions, while somehow lowering the standards of criminal behavior. How refreshing in these modern

mes to find a business that is ssll Cornish and not part of a large UK naaonal group. Boslowick Garage has been serving the community since 1979, with the third generation now working in the business. When you walk through the doors you are pleasantly surprised by the friendly atmosphere and wide choice of products on display. They not only sell your usual, papers, magazines and confectionery, they sell local produce as well, Baker Tom’s bread and Rodda’s dairy produce. There is a vast array of chilled drinks, sandwiches, and snacks. If you do not want to visit a large supermarket there is plenty of choice of fruit and veg, grocery products and a regular monthly display of special offers. Need something hot to keep you on the go, no problem, locally made Pip’s pasties, Mary’ pasties cooked to order, bacon or sausage baps, with many other choices.

www.falmouthwave.co.uk

I was even taken aback by the wide choice of chilled beers and wines, and a great selection of specialist beers and red wine. It is hard to find anything they do not cater for, they even have paypoint, lottery and a parcel service. Adding all this to the high grade fuel they supply, the choice of payment by credit card and the new facility to accept fuel cards, what else do you need, oh yes the car wash facility that helps you keep your transport looking pristine. Do not be mistaken this is not a small garage lost in me, it is a modern thriving business, supporrng the local community. Isn’t it time you paid a visit…?

Get-ahead for Christmas by making this cake on Stir-up Sunday. It’s the last Sunday before Advent, is the traditional start of the Christmas season, and falls on 20 November this year. It is thought that the name originated from the Book of Common Prayer, which begins: ‘Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord…’ and unintentionally reminds churchgoers that it’s time to make the Christmas pudding! Feeding your cake - Feed your cake every fortnight for up to 2 months. If you notice your cake is going dark early on and you’re worried about it burning on the top cover it with some foil or baking parchment. If you prefer not to feed your cake with alcohol try using tea instead. 1. Put the dried fruit, zests and juice, alcohol, butter and sugar in a large pan set over a medium heat. Bring to the boil, then lower the heat and simmer for 5 mins. Tip the fruit mixture into a large bowl and leave to cool for 30 mins.
