Paul’s Pet Page PAUL COCKERHAM MA, VetMB, PhD, MRCVS

Has over 30 years’ experience in both small animal and large animal veterinary practice and is a senior veterinary surgeon at Rosemullion Veterinary Practice

REGAINING THE BODY BEAUTIFUL… Reading this in January, I trust that like me, you’re making efforts – if only mentally! – to get over any undue excesses of the Christmas period. People always joke that health clubs get you to join in January when your New Year’s “get fit” resolution is fresh in your mind and you’re still in earnest about it. Well, your pet may need the same sort of attention, and it could help you: exercising them exercises you too! An overweight pet is far more likely to have long term health problems, just like us. If you think your pet is a little more “cuddly” than usual the first thing you should do is call your vet to give them a thorough examination to check for medical conditions that may be causing the weight gain. In the majority of cases where there has been an increase in weight there are usually no underlying medical causes – it’s just good living. So, if this really is the problem you should ask your vet about weight clinics. Most surgeries run them and they are often organised by the nurses for relatively little cost. These clinics will be able to advise you on diets and will be able to help and support you in monitoring and managing your pet’s weight.

arthritis or a heart condition – but then limitations like that make it even more crucial that you should keep an eye on their weight, or let the vet nurses do it for you. CATS

Cats are natural hunters and many cats are only seen once or twice a day by their owners, as the rest of the time they are out and about, although it’s quite possible they are asleep outdoors somewhere. If they are active young cats then they are probably getting enough exercise by just being an outdoor cat. But indoor cats are another matter. The cat that loves nothing more than to sit on the chair or windowsill all day watching the world go DOGS by is far more likely to suffer from increased weight gain. And it is a very real problem that This is really a book in itself, suffice to say at in later life obese cats develop diabetes (as we least one daily walk is the best idea; it benefits can), with all the hassles and costs involved in both pet and owner. In essence your dog’s weight reflects the balance between daily intake treating and monitoring the condition. of calories versus calories burnt by exercise. The simple answer is to indulge in regular The more you exercise the more you can eat, or the way I look at it, an hour in the gym buys play. Cats are naturally curious animals and small fast-moving objects will cause the innate 2 glasses of claret! chase response right from when they are kittens. Most mature cats will continue to show Of course you have to be careful if your it, particularly when they have practised it all pet has a clinical condition which might make their lives. Try rolling small balls such as one of it difficult to exercise them too much – e.g.

those practice golf balls which have holes in, or even easier, a scrunched-up piece of paper tied to piece of string and pulled along, or attached to your trousers, will get their interest. Pingpong balls are equally good! Furry, feathery or flapping things are particularly attractive to cats, but with kittens especially, you should replace such toys as they start to get damaged in case parts get swallowed. Patches of bright light, such as the reflection from a watch face or mirror, often get cats chasing, and laser lights are really good fun, both for the owner and the cat! RABBITS Rabbits can be good pets and nowadays are the third most widely kept small animal. However, many people continue to keep their pet in a small hutch, perhaps sited at the bottom of the garden, and maybe just a bit isolated. Such rabbits can live rather a miserable existence in cramped and uncomfortable conditions, with no area provided for exercise, so inadequate housing like this is one of the main reasons for ill health in rabbits. Rabbits need to be outside for a while every day. They need sunlight to produce vitamin D. Whatever the size of the hutch, rabbits need exercise and the safest way to achieve this is by using a run. However, the run must be escapeand predator-proof and provide shelter. The run should be moved daily so that the rabbit has fresh grass to nibble. Make sure that the grass has not been treated with weed-killer or any other harmful substance. The run should only be used for day time exercise and the rabbit placed back into its hutch at night. Ensure that other pets are not able to frighten the rabbit – this is particularly the case when you have a cat, as cats appear to love to use runs as a resting place and are greatly entertained by the stress of the occupant!

really enjoyed joining some of the great, local Christmas festivities and thank everyone involved in organising local events and activities. While out and about some people asked me about “Devonwall”. As there is some confusion about what is actually happening, I thought you might find this update useful. Firstly, I will clarify the current situation. Constituency boundaries are kept under review to ensure that MPs represent a similar number of constituents at Westminster. The reviews are carried out by the Boundary Commissions for England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland. These are independent bodies that propose constituencies that must meet the Rules for Redistribution set out by Parliament. These Rules were changed in 2013 to include the requirement that the House of Commons has 600 seats, a reduction of 50; and the requirement that all these constituencies (with the exception of four island seats) have electorates within 5% of the electoral quota. This is the total number of voters in the UK divided by the total number of constituencies (with the exception of the four island seats and their electorates). In 2011 The Parliamentary Election and Constituencies Bill was debated and voted upon. It sought to enable the 2015 election to be fought under the Alternative Vote system, provided the change was endorsed in a referendum on 5 May 2011 and boundary changes made to reduce the size of the House of Commons to 600. New rules for the redistribution of seats were designed to give primacy to numerical equality in constituencies and regular redistributions would take place every five years. Understanding that one of the implications of this Bill would be the possibility of an MP representing Cornwall and part of Devon, all Cornwall’s MPs made the case for Cornwall be treated as a special case. We moved an amendment to the legislation but sadly were defeated. Unfortunately, we simply didn’t have enough support in Parliament. Subsequently, the legislation went through both Houses of Parliament and the Bill became an Act of Parliament. The Boundary Commissions are currently implementing the Act. That is a public consultation on the proposed boundaries. Also, as you will be aware, building on the foundations laid when John Major was Prime Minister, the last Prime Minister helped enable the Council of Europe recognition of Cornish Minority Status. This special status is of course being taken into consideration by the Boundary Commission. After the Commission report in 2018, the Secretary of State must lay their reports before Parliament. The

to advertise call ashley on 07800986216

Secretary of State must then lay before Parliament a draft Order in Council to give effect to the proposed boundary changes. This Order requires the approval of both Houses of Parliament. This order is not amendable. We are very fortunate to live in a democracy where there are a politicians promoting a wide range of views. From what I understand, the basic assertion of the Cornish nationalists is that Cornwall is a separate nation like Wales and Scotland and should be treated as such. While I agree that the Duchy has a unique status within the United Kingdom, I accept that Cornwall is currently part of England and in turn the Union. I think being part of the Union matters. It matters for the economic stability and jobs that our partnership brings. It matters for the defence and security of our country. It matters because of the common bonds we share right across this United Kingdom. And it matters perhaps even more so now that we are leaving the European Union. I don’t agree with the Scottish, Welsh or Cornish nationalists that want each nation to become independent and break up the Union. I think it is important to build bridges not walls between people, focusing on what unites us rather than what divides us. There is an assertion that by having one MP represent Cornwall and part of Devon, that Cornwall is in some way diminished or weakened. I don’t accept this assertion. Cornwall remains Cornwall. It’s worth noting that Cornwall’s bishop Tim, a member of the House of Lords, represents Cornwall and some parishes in Devon. This recognises the fact that the border between Cornwall & Devon has moved over time. It is also worth noting that one Cornish MP, Derek Thomas represents not only Cornwall but also the Isles of Scilly. As you know the Isles of Scilly are not part of Cornwall. This proves to me that it is possible for one MP to represent two distinct areas. I am very proud of my deep Cornish roots and am proud that along with my fellow Cornish MPs we have delivered significant investment into Cornwall, including the Cornish language, heritage and culture over that last few years. I am confident that we will continue to see investment in years to come.

We received so many entries, the job of picking the winner was a very hard task. Also I would like to thank all my lovely clients for their generosity in donating all the wonderful prizes. The winner was nominated by Ruth Simmons and here is the reason why Michelle is our 2016 Hero! “Michelle is a true inspiration. After losing

her daughter to cancer, Michelle has worked tirelessly to raise funds for Tanya’s Courage Trust, a teenage cancer charity. At a time when most would be struggling to function, her drive, energy and enthusiasm has kept the charity in the public eye, raising much needed funds. A Penryn girl, her dedication deserves recognition and this determination coupled with her friendly face have made the charity shop she set up in Penryn, a success.

Beryl’s Bites

Use regular caster sugar if raw caster sugar is not available. You could also use croissants, panettone, fruit bread or white bread instead of the brioche.

WHITE CHOCOLATE AND RHUBARB BRIOCHE PUDDING 470g trimmed rhubarb stalks 3/4 cup raw caster sugar 450g brioche loaf 90g butter, softened 1tsp ground cardamom 180g white chocolate, chopped finely 1 vanilla bean 5 eggs 2 cups (500ml) pouring cream 1 1/2 cups (375ml) milk 2tsp icing sugar

1. Preheat oven to 180°C/350°F. 2. Cut rhubarb into 6cm lengths. Place rhubarb in a 4-litre (16-cup) ovenproof dish; sprinkle with ¼ cup of the raw caster sugar. Roast, covered, for 25 minutes or until just tender. Transfer half the rhubarb to a medium bowl. 3. Meanwhile, trim brioche; cut into 1.5cm thick slices. Combine 70g of the butter with cardamom in a small bowl. Spread butter mixture onto brioche slices; top with threequarters of the chocolate. Sandwich slices together. 4. Arrange brioche sandwiches, overlapping, on roasted rhubarb in ovenproof dish. Top with remaining rhubarb and remaining chocolate. 5. Split vanilla bean in half lengthways;

scrape out seeds into a jug. Add eggs, ¼ cup of the raw caster sugar, cream and milk; whisk to combine. 6. Pour half the cream mixture over brioche; stand until mixture has soaked into brioche. Pour remaining cream mixture over brioche; dot with remaining butter, sprinkle with remaining raw caster sugar. 7. Place ovenproof dish in a large baking dish; add enough boiling water to come halfway up side of ovenproof dish. 8. Bake pudding for 30 minutes or until just set. Remove ovenproof dish from baking dish; stand pudding for 10 minutes. Serve dusted with sifted icing sugar.

Garden

In the Garden

Cornish Garden Nurseries is a family run business situated on the A39 between Truro and Falmouth at Perranarworthal. We took over Cornish Garden Nurseries in March 2014 and have spent the last, almost 3 years, bringing the nursery back from the state of complete neglect that we found it in to a nursery that we are now very proud of. We wanted to keep Cornish Garden Nurseries as a true plant nursery. Propagating, taking cuttings and bringing our own plants on is an important thing to us. Our aim has always been is to sell good quality plants at a sensible price. We hold an extensive range of stock including trees, hedging, shrubs and perennial plants which are all available at the nursery or from our web site. We have a great selection of bare root traditional hedging whips as well as a wide range of pot grown hedging. We also have a large range of bare root fruit trees including a big proportion of Cornish and South West varieties. Lots of ornamental trees including large specimen trees.

Diary for JANUARY

• Do not prune plums, cherries and apricots until the summer. If these trees are pruned in • Plant new fruit trees and the winter they can become bushes now. They are best susceptible to silver leaf planted in a frost free period, bare root and whilst the plant is infections. • Raspberry canes can be still dormant. • Think about getting your apple planted. They need a sunny, well drained spot. and pear trees, blackcurrants, • Hedging and trees should gooseberries and redcurrants be planted now. As with the pruned if you haven’t already done so. This job really should fruit trees, plant in a frost free be done in the winter when the period, bare root or pot grown and whilst the plant is still plants are dormant.

dormant • Prune Wisteria, cut back summer side shoots to 2or 3 buds • Cut back foliage on ornamental grasses before they start growing. Cut them down to within a couple of centimetres of the ground. • Cut down old stems of perennial plants being careful of any new growth • Try to avoid walking on the lawn if there is a frost, or more

unlikely in Cornwall snow, on it because it can damage the grass beneath • Start planning your veggie plot for the coming year and order your seeds. Don’t forget to rotate the positions of your crops. • Make sure that all your garden tools have been cleaned and are ready for the new season ahead and think about getting garden machinery serviced if you haven’t done so already.

Here at Xpress Garage we take your safety very seriously! Safety is paramount to all our customers; a legal tyre also has the potential to be a lethal tyre!

New Year

giveaway

Everyone who comes to for a Car Wash,Tyre inspection or a wheel alignment check in December,

Check your tread

Independent research performed by the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) has provided convincing new evidence that worn tyres significantly increase the chances of having an accident on wet roads by increasing the braking distance.

The test results showed that significant increases in braking distance began to appear when the tyre was worn down to 3mm. Although the legal minimum UK tread depth is only 1.6mm, this new research showed that tyres with a 3mm tread had a 25% better performance than those at 1.6mm in wet conditions. In terms of braking distance this represents an extra 8 metres (25ft). In one test, where a new tyre with a tread depth of 8mm was compared to one with only 1.6mm the braking distance increased by 13 metres (42.25ft) – the equivalent to double the length of a typical living room. On the back of this research, the road safety organisation Roadsafe has launched a campaign to educate motorists on tyre safety and encourage more frequent tyre replacement.
