We are now selling National Garden Gift Vouchers a great present this Christmas. As this is the last “In the Garden” for 2015 we would like to take the opportunity to wish all of our customers past, present and future a very happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

Diary for December • Climbing roses can now be pruned. Cut

out diseased or damaged growth, tie in any new shoots and cut back old flowering side shoots to about one third of their length. • Leave old flower heads on Hydrangeas. They will help to protect the new buds from frost damage • Collect up any remaining fallen leaves • Check climber supports are sound and that the plants are tied in properly to help prevent wind damage • Plant some winter flowering shrubs to give some colour and fragrance to the garden Sarcoccoca confusa, Lonicera Fragrantissima and Winter Jasmine to name a few • Remove yellow leaves from winter brassicas. They are no help to the plant but may harbour diseases • Dig a bean trench ready for next year’s Runner Beans. Line the trench with newspaper, this helps to retain moisture

and will rot away, and throw in all your compostable kitchen waste (not cooked food) over the next month or so. Cover it over with the soil you dug out. Put a marker cane in each corner so you know exactly where the trench is. Beans are hungry and thirsty plants so this will help them along. • Apple and Pear trees need pruning in the winter so this job can be done. Don’t prune Plum’s Cherries, Apricots, and Peaches until the summer • Plant Raspberry canes • Prune grape vines • Strawberry plants should be replaced every 3 years. They start to lose their vigour and can harbour pests and diseases. Now is a good time to clear old Strawberry plants and prepare the ground for new plants • The bare root fruit season is now in full swing so now is the time for buying and planting your new fruit trees and bushes.

If you can remember last month’s article where I discussed the problems of dental disease in cats and dogs and then went on about how to spot it and the benefits of treating early I thought that I would use this month’s article, as I am clearly on a roll, to expand this topic into the problems associated with rabbits and their teeth and what you can do about that.

As with cats and dogs dental disease in rabbits is one of the most frequent ailments seen in practice. However, unlike cats and dogs, this is not always a problem of older animals; the problems can start at a relatively early age, as rabbit’s (and other small furries) teeth grow in a different way. Problems usually develop due to a misalignment of the teeth in the upper and lower jaws. Whilst it is almost certainly as painful for your pet as it would be for you, your pet lacks the same powers of communication (for the most part) and so are unable to let you know they are in pain.

SO LET’S TALK MORE SPECIFICALLY ABOUT RABBITS?

The classic picture of a rabbit for most people is the goofy bucktoothed Bugs Bunny of Disney fame or Dylan from the Magic Roundabout. While these seem healthy cartoon characters, rabbits with teeth which do not meet or which have poor enamel, are in a dangerous state. Rabbit's teeth grow throughout life and so incisor (front) teeth that do not wear each other down will grow until the upper ones bury themselves in the lower jaw gums and the lower ones poke way out of the mouth. A

rabbit like this cannot eat or groom. If the molars or cheek teeth do not meet properly they wear unevenly, causing sharp spikes to form. These erode at the gums causing painful ulcers, again stopping the animal from feeding or grooming. The importance of continual food intake in rabbits is central to health, while grooming is essential to prevent problems like fly strike. Thus wellfunctioning teeth are absolutely essential to a rabbit's continuing well-being.

WHY DO THESE TEETH GROW ABNORMALLY?

One of the main reasons is that the bones of the jaw do not form properly due to deficiencies in calcium and other minerals. But, you say, I give my rabbit all the food he could possibly want, and a wide variety of different food.

HOW CAN HE HAVE A DIETARY DEFICIENCY?

The problem is that, by giving your rabbit a big bowl of different foodstuffs, he can chose to eat only what he finds tasty. It is the less appetising items which often contain the minerals he needs. So give a small amount of rabbit mix or pellets as well as some greens and plenty of good-quality (ideally Timothy) hay so that he has eaten all the dry food by the time he has his next feed. Overgrown incisors should be shortened but this needs to be done regularly since the teeth keep growing.

Vets used to clip rabbits' teeth with nail clippers but occasionally this damaged the teeth or gums. These days most vets seeing a large number of rabbits use dental burrs to file down the incisors. Treating poorly-aligned molar teeth is more difficult but burring away the sharp spurs on the molar teeth under general anaesthesia is considered the optimal treatment today. If the incisors alone are causing the problems then one long-term solution is to remove upper and lower incisors, a relatively simple operation. Although this sounds drastic it is without doubt the best long term solution to the problem. In the picture you can see the extent of the root of the incisor which must be removed to prevent re-growth – it is amazing how long they really are! You may worry that without these trademark teeth your bunny will have difficulty eating grasses when out grazing, actually they will be fine as they use their lips to gather the grass in and effectively rip the grass rather than cut it. It takes them no time at all to make the change and their health will be fine as long as you maintain a balanced diet.

HOW CAN YOU TELL IF YOUR BUNNY IS IN DIFFICULTY?

As you are handling your rabbit every day one of the first things you may notice is weight loss but there are others:• It may not be eating as much • The fur round its mouth may be wet as it is salivating more • It may have diarrhoea • Matted fur due to lack of grooming • They may just not be themselves – apathetic – standing at the back of the cage

If you are worried – ring your veterinary practice and see if there is a nurse free to give your bunny the once over – or book yourself an appointment with a vet.

Some insurance policies will cover your rabbit’s dental treatment or elements of it so you should check the small print or ring the insurance company prior to booking treatment with the vet. For example some policies will only cover you if your pet has had a dental check in the preceding 12 months. Rabbits make wonderful pets and companions whether you have then as house rabbits or outdoor pets, but they are not without their problems and as long as you are aware of these problems and happy to deal with them you rabbit will provide you years of pleasure.

Sarah

newton’s news

Like many readers of this great magazine, I will be making preparations for celebrating Christmas and New Year with my family. I consider myself a very fortunate person to have a large, close family that like to get together for festive occasions. I really enjoy shopping for the excellent range of locally produced food and drink and finally getting some time in the kitchen!

DECEMBER RELEASES

Just Cause 3

But as we approach the coldest time of the year, I am very well aware that for some of my constituents Christmas is not such a happy time. There are many lonely and isolated people of all ages that need our support. I encourage you to think about how you might support the many local organisations that do so much to ensure as many people as possible will have a happy Christmas.

I personally can't think of anything worse than not having a home, so for much of my adult life I have volunteered and supported organisations providing shelter and help for homeless people to enable them back onto their feet.

St Petroc’s is making plans to run a Winter Night Shelter at its Centre in Truro during December and January. Churches are working in partnership with St Petroc’s to open an additional temporary shelter in Camborne. This ambitious and worthy project is going to need a lot of volunteers. All volunteers will be offered full training and support by St Petroc’s staff and travel expenses will be provided. Last winter a similar project in Cornwall accommodated 104 rough sleepers and 75% of these were helped into permanent accommodation as a result of their contact with the service. So this really is an opportunity to make a positive difference.

Any support you can give to this work will be gratefully received and if you need any further information please contact Corinna Langford at St Petroc’s 01872 264153 corinna.langford@stpetrocs.org.uk.

The Community Café is open on Wednesday from 9.30 am - 12.30 pm at the Dracaena Centre, Dracaena Avenue, Falmouth. They serve cooked breakfast, tea/coffee, cakes and provide access to showers & washing facilities as well as access to housing, alcohol and drug advice.

The Penryn/Falmouth Foodbank based at the Highway Community Centre, Church Road, Penryn TR10 8DX offers a warm friendly environment for advice, coffee, tea and cakes as well as emergency food and other supplies. Please contact Sarah on 01326 378433 or email foodbank@highwaychurch.co.uk While the number of people who

don't have a home at all is very small, I am also aware that there are too many people living in poor quality homes, struggling to keep warm. While there is a great deal of work being undertaken in Cornwall to tackle this, as I switched on the central heating system in my home, I know that some of my constituents will be worried about the cost of doing so in their own homes. Every year I work with the Winter Wellness campaign to ensure people can stay warm and well. If you or someone you know are elderly, or a person with underlying health issues, caring for a vulnerable person or young children, and are worried about fuel bills, debts, keeping warm or your home being cold or damp and this is effecting your health, then the Winter Wellbeing campaign can help.

For advice and access to services provided by the programme’s 30 partner organisations, call the award winning Cornish charity Community Energy Plus on Freephone 0800 954 1956.

The Winter Wellbeing programme is open to anyone and offers access to a range of services including independent energy advice tailored to your individual needs, including home visits and follow-up support, access to heating and insulation grants, providing practical advice on understanding and reducing your energy bills and combatting condensation and damp, support for families with children if they have additional needs, debt advice, benefits advice and health information. Winter Wellness is funded by Public Health, Inclusion Cornwall, Council of the Isles of Scilly, NHS Kernow and Cornwall Community Foundation (CCF). Over 30 partners work together to deliver common outcomes of reducing fuel poverty, improving health and progress to work. Since 2011/12, Winter Wellness has helped nearly 4,500 Cornish households to stay warm and well during the winter. With your assistance in spreading the word about the help that is available more people will be warm and well this winter. I very much hope you have a Happy Christmas and I look forward to seeing you during the New Year.

Don’t chance it. Check your tread Here at Xpress Garage we take your safety very seriously! Tregoniggie Industrial Estate, Falmouth. TR11 4SN

Safety is paramount to all our customers; a legal tyre also has the potential to be a lethal tyre!

where a new tyre with a tread depth of 8mm was compared to one with only 1.6mm the braking distance increased by 13 metres (42.25ft) – the equivalent to double the length of a typical living room. On the back of this research, the road safety organisation Roadsafe has launched a campaign to educate motorists on tyre safety and encourage more frequent tyre replacement.

Independent research performed by the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) has provided convincing new evidence that worn tyres significantly increase the chances of having an accident on wet roads by increasing the braking distance.

The test results showed that significant increases in braking distance began to appear when the tyre was worn down to 3mm. Although the legal minimum UK tread depth is only 1.6mm, this new research showed that tyres with a 3mm tread had a 25% better performance than those at 1.6mm in wet conditions. In terms of braking distance this represents an extra 8 metres (25ft). In one test,
