Thomas Bossard Ellie and Chris

T

he love of art should be simple, if you like it, you like it, irrespective of whether you can tell by whom and how it was painted. It is often the case that looking and understanding art can appear to place you in a certain elite class, often leaving many of us feeling a little bit like Bridget Jones at a society dinner party! That's how I used to think of it. So what a fantastic, refreshing experience it is, that anyone can visit and browse around Art World Gallery, free in the knowledge that Chris and Ellie, owners of the gallery, quickly dispel these fears. Having both studied and collected art for many years Chris and Ellie turned their passion into a business, 15 years ago. The concept for the gallery at that time, adjacent to their home in the Cotswolds, came about after attending many contemporary and fine art shows throughout the UK.

Gyorgy Gaspar The move to Cornwall was a natural progression for them as Chris’s grandparents were Cornish, meaning he spent many happy childhood holidays here. Chris and Ellie put a great deal of time and thought when selecting the location for their gallery; Falmouth’s cosmopolitan feel and energy convinced them this was the right place to be. The Gallery is home to an exciting mix of modern and contemporary French, British and Italian paintings and sculptures. If it’s an alternative to a painting you are looking for, they also have a lovely selection of ceramics and glass. Chris and Ellie take great pleasure in providing their customers with a relaxed and friendly environment where they can select art works to enrich their home. They have a personal connection

David Jamin

with most of the artists they display, as many of them have become personal friends and should you wish, they are happy to share this knowledge with you. All of this will reassure you that they fully understand the meaning and ethos behind every painting. They are friendly, approachable and will make you feel completely at ease as soon as you walk through the door and you will genuinely walk away feeling that you have quickly developed an expert’s eye for selecting art. As Chris says, “You don’t need to know anything about art, if it talks to you and gives you pleasure that’s all you should ask of it”. In mid-September the gallery will be extended upstairs, where you will find quirky and unusual items of furnishings along with further pieces of art. by Ashley Wall 62 Church Street, Falmouth TR11 3DS t +44 (0)1326 219323 m +44 (0)7913 848515 www.artworldltd.com

OBESITY!!

We hear all the time about getting overweight and the problems that the extra few pounds, and then a few pounds more, cause our bodies. And once acquired, this excess weight is difficult to shift, particularly when one reaches a certain age!

And it’s no different in cats: there are several clinical consequences of feline obesity, the chief ones of which are as follows:

1- Diabetes – just as in

people, overweight cats are at risk of developing diabetes, as the extra fat impairs the cat’s ability to produce insulin, which is the hormone which keeps the glucose levels in the blood under control. Treatment of it in cats is like in people, with injections of insulin, and with frequent blood tests to monitor progress, but weight loss is also an important part of the programme of care. The good news is that with weight loss, cats often go into remission by themselves, so that sometimes you can stop injecting insulin altogether.

2- Osteoarthritis – obese cats are almost five times as likely to require some form of treatment for arthritis, due to the extra stress put on joints by being overweight. In really fat cats the fat also actually infiltrates the joints themselves, causing more disruption to the way they work. Treatment using anti-inflammatory drugs can help, but these are not without risk in some cats and must be used carefully, because the fat reduces the ability of the liver and kidneys to work properly. 3- Bladder problems – obesity increases the risk of bladder stones forming, and apart from the discomfort these cause, there is a risk of blockage of the urethra (the tube from the bladder to the outside world), so the cat can’t pee. Also, if there is a risk of diabetes, with sugar in the urine, then the sugar helps bacteria grow in the bladder because it acts as a source of food, resulting in a painful cystitis. 4- Quality of life – there is a good deal of evidence to suggest that cats with an average weight (say, something below the 4kg mark) live longer and are generally ‘healthier’ than their fatter counterparts! They don’t develop anything like the chronic diseases that obese cats do; more to the point, obese cats are higher anaesthetic risks, they have increased medical costs, and drugs often have a narrower

margin of safety.

The moral of the tale is that it is easier to prevent weight gain than to try and diet a cat to reduce it, so if you have any concerns don’t hesitate to contact your vet. At Rosemullion we have a nursing team who are extremely pro-active on dietary advice, and will carefully monitor your cat’s weight: prevention is better than cure therefore!

PET PASSPORTS

You may have heard of the Pet Passport or Pet Travel Scheme (PETS), which was introduced into the UK some years ago now, as part of an EEC wide system to facilitate the transport of pets in and out of the UK, while maintaining our rabies-free status. It’s useful when people want to take their dogs on holiday with them, and generally speaking it works pretty well. However, recent reports in the veterinary press have highlighted some interesting problems with it, brought to light as a result of an influx of illegally-landed

puppies in the UK, coming in from Eastern Europe. Puppies entering the country under PETS must not be for sale, they need to be at least 15 weeks old, microchipped, vaccinated against rabies, treated for tapeworm, and have a pet passport. A Dogs Trust investigation found evidence that underage puppies are regularly being brought into Great Britain, in the majority of cases with falsified data on their passports, by commercial dealers from Eastern Europe who were using PETS as a cover. These puppies are too young to travel, meaning their vaccinations are invalid - if they even have them at all. They are then being sold to unsuspecting families in this country, who often have no idea that they have a pet from abroad until their vet finds a foreign microchip, meaning that the puppy at risk of being seized and quarantined. To highlight the deficiencies in the system, volunteers from the Dogs Trust apparently smuggled into the UK a stuffed toy dog, carried in a travelling cage, without any of the enforcement authorities identifying it as a fake! The report on their website makes interesting reading: https://www.dogstrust.org.uk/p uppysmuggling/

TRY BEFORE YOU BUY! Step into the world of Water Luxury Those of you who know me will know that I can’t resist a little bit of pampering and luxury! So when I received a call from OC Spas inviting me to try out their range of Artesian luxury hot tubs and spas, it was simple, YES PLEASE!

By Ashley Wall

OC Spas is run by Jonny and Lucy Bottrell and was born from their desire to work together and build a family business. You wont find any hard sell here! The whole experience is one of peace and tranquility; a glass of Processco and a few locally made chocolates was certainly very welcome. Buying a spa can be a big investment; it is a time consuming process, as there are so many factors to take into consideration. The aim of Jonny and Lucy is to streamline this process for all their clients, creating an enjoyable and informed buying experience. Their product knowledge is very extensive, outlining the sheer joy of the spa experience to the many health benefits, not forgetting the all-

important family time that can bring everyone together without a mobile phone in sight, (unless you want to bluetooth your play list into the spa sound system!) In their extensive showroom you can try out one their Artesian Spas. These spas have won recognition throughout the industry and come in four distinct styles, from a single person spa, all the way up to the large ten person spa which cover many options and varying prices to suit all budgets.

The ‘try before you buy’ ethos is paramount here, with such an important decision to make you will be encouraged to try as many of their display spas as you

wish, this can be done by appointment to ensure you have the privacy and full attention you deserve. As Jonny explains, “We want our clients to be wowed by our showroom but for it to still feel accessible to them whether they’re buying from our introductory range or our high end products. Having ourselves felt uncomfortable in the past, we want our customers to feel safe buying from us, knowing that they can trust and rely on us”

I came away feeling relaxed, revigorated and just like I had enjoyed a full body massage, bliss and of course, desperately longing Call: 01872 575333 for one of my own! Unit 4, Goonhavern Garden Centre, Goonhavern, Truro TR4 9QQ

Artists' love story has a Cornish happy ending North 55 is one

of those galleries that you just can’t walk past without being lured in. Once in you can’t help but explore its vibrant array of mixed media paintings, jewellery and unusual collectables. When you meet Jack and Inga, the couple responsible for setting up the gallery, you fully understand the enthusiasm behind every piece of art and how each item has been carefully chosen to provoke thought, imagination and creativity. To understand how they manage to encapsulate the passion and commitment to art, that embraces this amazing little gallery, you just have to dig a little bit deeper into the story that is Jack and Inga.

Inga, originally from Northern Ireland, was newly divorced with two

little girls, then a toddler and a baby, when she met Jack in Hampshire. They were both lapsed artists, painting a little in their spare time while holding down other jobs to pay the bills.

"I had gradually moved down the country from Sunderland, painting as I went," says Jack. "I met Inga in Portsmouth and we just clicked. We knew instantly." There were no doubts for the couple, and Jack moved in with Inga, becoming a father to her two girls Cora and Indigo before they made the decision to start a new life in Cornwall.

Art definitely runs in the family, as adorning the walls of the gallery are several watercolours painted by Inga's mother, Ruth. She has also moved to Cornwall from Northern

Ireland and helps look after the girls. "My mum has painted ever since we were little and she used to paint and used the money from selling her work to take us on travels all over the world," says Inga. "I was brought up on my mum's painting money."

Both Inga and Jack grew up on the coast – Inga near the spectacular Giant's Causeway on the wild north coast of Northern Ireland and Jack beside the wide sands of the resort of Roker in Sunderland. In what Inga and Jack describe as "one of many coincidences", both places are on the same latitude, 55 degrees north – which gave them the name for their gallery, North 55. At their family home in Redruth, where Inga and Jack live with their girls, Inga and Jack share many happy hours working alongside each other in their studio. "We learn from each other," says Jack. "I think we value each other's input – Inga will gently tell me if something is rubbish!" Evidence of the success of this recipe can be seen on

the walls of the Greenbank hotel where some of their paintings hang. It doesn’t stop there, as their work is now getting interest from many other hotels from around the globe.

Jack proposed to Inga at the official opening of their gallery, in August last year, so entwined is the gallery – and their art – in their love story and this is clearly reflected in everything they do and produce. So you know that when you visit this gorgeous little gallery, every item comes with the added value of having this heartwarming story attached. I can picture it now (excuse the pun!), someone questioning the history behind a piece of art purchased at this little store and recounting this lovely little story as part of the beauty associated with that item. by Ashley Wall Visit

A new £5.5 million University of Exeter development at the Penryn Campus opens this month. The impressive new building will provide another home for the University of Exeter Business School which is expanding into Cornwall in 2015 as well as providing space for the University’s existing Marine Renewables team, and growing Centre for Ecology and Conservation (CEC). Currently named the Science and Engineering Research Support Facility (SERSF), the building will also feature a specially designed area for business engagement called ‘The Collaboratory’ from which dedicated staff, along with the University’s Knowledge Exchange team, will lead a number of long-term research projects with selected local business partners. Laboratories for offshore renewables and biosciences will enable an expansion of the research led by the Marine Renewables team and CEC. Additional offices will provide flexible space for those engaged in both research and teaching across the disciplines housed within the building. As with previous investments at the campus, the aim is to provide more opportunities for local people, to grow the economy of Cornwall, creating jobs and wealth by building on existing education and research assets, and supporting the development of high-value businesses, people, knowledge, investment and research. The SERSF has been enabled by investment from the European Regional Development Fund Convergence Programme (£3.9M) and £1.6M from the University of Exeter. This is another great example of how businesses and universities across the region are coming together to power innovation and growth. The Prime Minister and Chancellor have been clear that this is a ‘One Nation Government’, that is supporting ‘One Nation Science’. That means 2 things: upholding the very best in British science and research. We should be proud of our science base – it’s one of our country’s great success stories. With less than 1% of the world’s population, the UK produces 16% of top quality published research it also means developing that excellence for the whole country, making sure all areas and all groups of people can reach their full potential One Nation Science is bold and ambitious. And that’s why in our manifesto, we set a clear goal: for Britain to be the best place in Europe to innovate, patent new ideas and set up and expand a business. That mission extends to all parts of the UK. Public investment in science delivers strong returns to the economy of at least 20% per annum, and leverages in private investment. Recent research that shows that every pound of UK public funding for research generates

between £1.13 and £1.60 of private investment and we know that private investment generates further returns to the UK economy of up to 50%. We protected the science budget in cash terms throughout the last Parliament. This is why UK taxpayers invest £10 billion a year in research and innovation. Our universities are successfully engaging with industry and the returns from collaborations are now greater than ever before. HEFCE’s latest report on business-university interaction shows the value of these partnerships has reached record levels. Our Productivity Plan set out our ambition for universities to continue to increase their collaborations to £5 billion per annum by 2025. One Nation Science is about more than place and our economic geography. If UK research is to reach its full potential, we must also make best use of all the tremendous talent we have here in the UK. The last government was determined to improve diversity and this government will keep up that momentum. We need to take a holistic approach, looking at the whole talent pipeline, from STEM teaching in schools through to research grants and the diversity of leadership. For our schools, we have announced £67 million for the next 5 years to recruit and train an extra 2,500 maths and physics teachers and upskill 15,000 existing maths and physics teachers. Our STEM Ambassadors programme is doing important work to inspire more young people into science, and especially girls. We must push for faster progress. Only one in ten Computing students is female. And only 19% of girls who achieved the top grade in GCSE physics go on to study physics at A-Level, compared to 49% of boys. And last year we initiated the Your Life campaign which aims to increase participation in maths and science studies at age 16 and beyond, with an ambitious target to increase the number of students taking maths and physics at A level by 50% in 3 years. This is just as important for young people considering Apprenticeships as Higher Education. I am delighted that Exeter University has recently achieved Silver level of the Athena Swan charter, which recognises employers’ commitment to advancing the careers of women in higher education.

David’s story

Hi my name is David Parry and I would like to share with you my experience and story at Slimming World in Falmouth. I joined about 24 months ago, I am disabled through chronic Osteoarthritis in all my joints and wheelchair bound for 95% of the time and unable to exercise, which most people take for granted. I survived a heart attack in 2002 and was left with unstable angina and had 2 stents

fitted. I was visiting the hospital as an emergency admission once every few months which was a great worry to my family especially as it was often in the early hours of the morning and then having to wait to know whether it was another heart attack or an angina attack. Looking in the mirror one day, which I rarely did, I realised that I needed help and quickly, otherwise I was going to be in serious trouble with my heart condition. I chose Slimming World, although I was dubious that any diet would help me. On my first visit I was surprised that Pauline the Consultant sat and listened to what I had to say and felt immediately relaxed and at ease. Here seemed to be the plan for me with lots of unlimited foods including meat, chicken, rice, pasta, fruit and veg as well as loads more and NO WEIGHING OR MEASURING. In my first week I lost 3 ½ lbs I was amazed because I ate so much and was never hungry. We all eat the same as a family and I can still enjoy my favourite curries and roast dinners. I am now 4 stones 1.5 lbs lighter and have lost 10 inches from my waist and my wheelchair is so much more comfortable as I now have space in which to sit. The groups are so friendly and amiable which is down to Pauline’s

ability to work with people of all ages. Since joining I have made many new friends in the group and we all share recipes and support each other. February 2014 was my last emergency admission to hospital; Slimming World has not only changed my life but also probably saved my life. I still have more weight to lose so the journey carries on with my amazing friends from the group. If this letter inspires only 1 person to join Slimming World , the time it has taken me to put this letter together through the pain and the use of 1 finger to type, it has been worth every minute and every second that it has taken me. Thank you Slimming World and my friends and family David.

W

e have started the next phase of improvements at the nursery, building up the ground levels at the far end of the land to put in another polytunnel. This will allow the growth for more Herbaceous Perennials next year. We already grow a lot of our own shrubs. September is a very good time to be planting Shrubs and Perennials. Many people only plant in the spring but the advantage to planting now is that the soil is warm and the plant has time to start establishing itself before winter sets in so that as soon as we start getting some warm early spring days the plant is ready to grow so giving a big advantage over spring plantings. Here is a reminder of jobs for September.

Diary for September

• It is now the best time to plant your Daffodils, Tulips and other spring flowering bulbs. • Autumn bedding such as Pansy,Violas, Bellis and Primroses are now ready for planting. • Think about ordering new fruit and ornamental trees. Autumn/winter is the best time for planting. • Order your soft fruit bushes such as Raspberries, Blackcurrants, Gooseberries etc. ready for autumn/winter planting. • Keep pruning your Roses as the flowers fade, if we have a long mild autumn like last year you might possibly get another flush of bloom. • Keep Camellias and Rhododendrons wellwatered at this time of year to ensure that next year’s buds develop well. • Pull or cut off the foliage of main crop

potatoes 3 weeks before harvesting. This will protect your crop from any blight spores infecting the tubers as they are lifted. Lay out the potatoes for a couple of hours to dry then store in paper or hessian sacks in a cool dry dark place. • Help your Pumpkins to ripen ready for Halloween by removing any leaves that are shading the fruit. • When Beans and Peas have finished cut them off at ground level but leave the roots in the ground. These crops are nitrogen fixing so the nitrogen is released back into the ground as the roots decay. • To test when Apples are ripen gently take them in the palm of your hand and give them a gentle pull, they should come away easily. •Cut back the fruited canes of your summer Raspberries leaving the new green canes for next year’s crop. Tie in the new canes to the support wires.
