It never fails to amaze me just what dogs will consume – and exactly how they manage to swallow what they do! The range of things is quite startling: Lego bricks (despite the sharp corners), socks (preferably dirty) are a real favourite, balls, children’s toys, bits of children’s toys (when it was presumably one step too far to neck back the whole toy) – all these things (along with the odd tampon maybe) are things that you can’t possibly think would be attractive to a dog, other than they offer a certain challenge. Objects like bones (the more decayed the better), peach stones, corn on the cob, large bits of tree root – well, you can just imagine that apart from offering an equal challenge, they may also have a certain gastronomic reward!
DIAGNOSIS Sometimes an owner will bring in their dog asking us to check them out as they have seen them eating something they shouldn’t – this frequently goes for children’s toys – and / or a dog is presented to us that has been vomiting for a day or two, and a foreign body is suspected. Once the ‘thing’ has been swallowed, then very occasionally it can lodge in the gullet, but this is extremely uncomfortable for the dog, as you might think, and we see these cases very soon after the incident has happened. Much more often the foreign body goes into the stomach, and can either stay there, or else the powerful contractions of the stomach wall drive it further down the gut into the small intestine. In the meantime the dog appears
FOREIGN BODIES IN DOGS
relatively unconcerned, apart from the vomiting, and lack of anything coming through at the other end, although they will often carry on drinking OK and keeping fluids down. That’s the point when we tend to examine these cases, and because all too often an owner will not be aware that their dog has hoovered up a bit of bone discarded by a fox, say, as they tend to eat such things very quickly! They know they shouldn’t, but they can’t help themselves, you’re not looking, and down it goes… And then whatever seemed to be such a good idea at the time comes to a stop in the small intestine. Sometimes these blockages can be palpated when you feel the abdomen – yet they’re not painful generally. But in the case of socks, gloves, knickers and other such niceties, when the foreign body is quite soft, they’re much more difficult to palpate. X-rays are usually taken to identify whether there is anything there, if so what it might be, and whereabouts in the guts it is, sometimes with very helpful results:
As you can see from both of these radiographs, the foreign body is quite easy to spot – in the one case it was a marble, and in the other it was several pieces of chop bones blocking a lot of gas wanting to get through! Sometimes it’s not so easy to detect any obstruction, which is where ultrasound scans are useful, or also to give the dog some barium sulphate to swallow, as this is very easy to detect on x-rays and should go through the length of the gut OK unless there is an obstruction. If you take several x-rays over a few hours and find the barium is only getting to a certain point along the intestines and no further, you know there’s something blocking it. TREATMENT If the dog has been vomiting for a day or two and there definitely is something in the guts, the only thing to do is to remove it surgically. Before any surgery is performed, however, it’s best practice to do
some blood analyses to make sure that the electrolyte (sodium / potassium / chloride) balance is OK (and if not to correct it) and make good any dehydration with intravenous fluids. Then we can give a full general anaesthetic and do a laparotomy – opening up the abdomen – identifying the piece of gut where the obstruction is lodged, and then cutting into the gut to take out the offending article.Very occasionally the piece of bowel where the bone / Lego / marble has lodged is starting to decay, so that too has to be removed and the two ends of the gut sutured together. Once the obstruction is removed then everything else is stitched back together again and all, fingers crossed, will be well, as recovery is usually pretty quick. Which means that your pet will be on the lookout again for the smelly sock, the chewable ball, the delectable just-can’t-resist-it stone…

A little you time...
hen you next have a stressful w day, why not step into your own comforting and relaxing bathroom and let your body and mind take a breather.
We live in a relentless age where time just won’t stand still and often you barely have a moment to sit down and just be you for five minutes. It’s at times like these when you most need to relax, but popping out to the spa for a quick massage before tea is perhaps a flightof-fancy. Function first. The bathroom is a busy place and for larger households, keeping it shipshape is a never-ending battle in which you are always on the back foot. Space-saving storage is a must for smaller rooms, so you can hide away any clutter therefore opening out your bathroom space. A beautiful basin can act as a great focal point and with some stunning water-saving taps; you will also save money in the long run. Many of our customers are taking the popular choice of removing the bath and adding a walk in shower.
Clear space, clear mind. Bathrooms have been fashionable since the third century and yet can be neglected or overlooked in many homes, leaving you with a dark and damp room with mould creeping up the walls. So it’s time to take a sponge out of the Greek, Roman, Turkish and
Japanese baths and make your bathroom the place to be. A revamped bathroom is not only good for the soul, but also great for the value of your house with up to a 20% value increase in some cases.
Colours and lighting. Colours and motif are essential for creating a calming environment. The right lighting can accent the mood, from dim and relaxing for you to bright and vibrant for the kids. A relaxing bath or maybe a large walk in shower, with time honoured tradition of tiles, or a modern twist with grout free panels. February is such a busy month for us at the nursery trying to get all the new stock ready for the coming season. It is also very satisfying see the plants that were small cutting and seeds not that long ago thriving, healthy and ready for sale. Hopefully February will be a lot drier than December and January so we can get back on the garden and catch up the jobs that need doing.
Diary for January
• Pot on rooted cuttings of tender perennial plants that were taken last summer • Plant deciduous trees and fruit trees now is a good time so long as the ground is neither frozen or waterlogged • Lift and divide Snowdrops while they are still green if you want to move them or create more plants • Remove faded flower heads from pansies and other winter bedding to prevent them setting seed and to encourage a further flush of flowers. • Prune Winter Jasmine after flowering has finished to encourage new growth for next years flowers. Cut back the previous years growth to 5cm from the old wood. • Prune overwintering Fuchsias back to one or two buds on each shoot • Mulch fruit trees with well-rotted straw such as Strulch, or well-rotted garden compost but take care to keep the mulch back from the trunk • Prune blackcurrants, redcurrants and gooseberries. • If you haven’t already done so prune your
Apple and Pear trees but don’t prune Plum’s, Cherries, Peaches and Apricots until the summer • Raspberry canes can still be planted • Start chitting your early seed potatoes • Plant Rhubarb crowns • Keep off the lawn until it has chance to dry out a bit. Going on to or trying to work on the lawn, unless you have very good drainage, may well do more harm than good
Plant of the month Camellia
Possibly a bit of an obvious choice as we are lucky enough to see them so often in Cornwall but they are a beautiful plant with their shear variety of types, sizes and colours. They provide a vivid splash of colour when there is little else in bloom. Easy to look after, they just require acidic soil, preferably some light shade the occasional feed and water and repay us with a great display in late winter.

people all over the world love British films and films made in Britain. According to Amanda Nevill, CEO of the British Film Institute (BFI) the government’s film tax relief generates almost £12.50 for every £1 spent and provides crucial support for UK films and filmmakers – it is a shrewd investment for the UK. Britain’s film and creative industries give us much to be proud of, with British stories as diverse as Spectre and Suffragette winning the hearts and minds of audiences across the world while creating jobs and investment at home. The creative sector tax reliefs, alongside lottery funding through the BFI, are a catalyst for creativity and innovation in storytelling in UK independent film, and are a key ingredient in the UK’s winning combination of outstanding talent and skills, world-leading studios and facilities, and iconic locations like Cornwall, which attracts film production from around the world. The Chancellor hailed 2015 as a ground-breaking year for independent and big budget international films, as he has recently confirmed government support for the UK film industry through film tax relief had reached £251 million, generating over £1 billion worth of direct investment in the UK in the last year alone. This is the most generous support ever provided by the government. The official statistics recently released by HMRC also confirmed that £1.5 billion was secured by the UK film industry through the government’s film tax relief and led to over £6.9 billion investment from the film industry across the UK since 2007. This investment has led to 260,000 full-time creative sector jobs in the UK and critical acclaim for the movies made here. Six British films were nominated for Oscars® in 2015, and almost 20% of the industry’s major film festival and industry awards for the whole 2014 to 2015 season were for British-made films, the highest since records began. In 2014 to 2015, a record 220 films made in the UK claimed this relief. Large scale international films such as Avengers: The Age of Ultron and home grown independent productions, such as The Imitation Game and Suffragette would have been eligible. The boost international film makers give our domestic screen industries is crucial, since the money generated by major inward investment titles helps create further training and business opportunities which allow our own independent productions to thrive, thus maintaining the UK’s status as a cultural powerhouse that is both creative and highly profitable. Independent UK productions of all budgets have benefited from the film tax relief, receiving a third of total
government support. The UK film industry’s cutting edge skills in the fields of visual effects, sound production and world-class studios are making the UK an even more attractive place to make films. For example, the UK is home to many of the world’s leading VFX companies including those behind award-winning films such as Gravity. Falmouth University students are learning the skills to join these expanding companies. As well as its creative and technology companies, the film industry relies upon a variety of sectors from catering to security, who have also felt the positive effects of the tax relief. BFI figures show that film production supports around 40,000 full-time jobs in the UK, which is a 22% increase from 2009. Introduced in 2007, the film tax relief was extended to 25% for films of all budget levels on 1 April 2015 to support UK film making. The relief is available to films which qualify as British productions through a cultural test or via an official UK coproduction treaty. Other upcoming inward investment releases will include Eddie Redmayne’s venture into JK Rowling world of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the live action version of Beauty and the Beast and Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur. Plus Star Wars: Episode VIII, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Untitled Matt Damon/Bourne Sequel, The Jungle Book, The Lost City of Z, The Huntsman: Winter’s War. The billion dollar Star Wars franchise is committed to making the new trilogy here in the UK and in addition to filming has set up a new Visual FX facility house. I understand that credits introduced by the government to encourage programme-makers to choose the UK has been worth more than £2 million to Mammoth Screen, the production company behind Poldark. I have been told that without the incentive, it would have been filmed in Ireland. Instead, it is coming back to Cornwall for a second series. Poldark has attracted as many as seven million viewers, helping BBC1 to its highest ratings share for the first quarter of a year in a decade. I am confident that 2016 will be another great year for filmmaking in Cornwall and look forward to seeing our beautiful Duchy featured on screens large and small around the world.

FROM WHEEL ALIGNMENT AND BALANCING TO SERVICING AND MOT’S, XPRESS GARAGE & TYRES OFFER A QUALITY SERVICE AT HIGHLY COMPETITIVE RATES.
A
lt hough owner and Managing Director, Peter Adams insists Xpress Garage & Tyres doesn’t put much weight on titles, saying: “Everyone is hands on; we’re all in the workshop getting it done for the customer. We have a ‘can do’ attitude and it’s not about making money, it’s about offering customers a good level of service they don’t usually get elsewhere.” It’s an attitude that’s carried the company from being a specialist tyre business to one that now provides vehicle recovery, car and commercial servicing, MOTs, specialist alignment and other services. At the core of everything, however, remains a commitment to exceptional service. “It’s less about money and more about trust and care,” states HGV Recovery Specialist Andy Crawford. “We have nine courtesy cars we give out to customers and every vehicle that comes in is washed as a free courtesy using recycled rainwater.”
COMMERCIAL CUSTOMERS The company remains on the industrial estate where it started in 2003 but set up an MOT and service centre in a separate unit in 2007 and in 2012 expanded into a third unit for commercial vehicle service, repair and recovery. It now has a host of commercial customers, undertaking repairs and servicing for major supermarkets in Cornwall and carrying out recovery work for such as Lanterns Recovery Specialists. The recovery element, as Peter explains, continues to grow: “In the last year, we have expanded from two to nine vehicles. The breakdown recovery and fleet side of the company is relocating to another building, kitted out with ramps and everything else to
take it to the next level where we’re going to deal with HGVs.” “We have ADR and can recover anything up to 9.5 tonnes, with a service van for roadside repairs,” adds Andy.“For supermarket artics, we provide fleet support and fleet rescue. Recoverywise, we cover anywhere within Cornwall although we have recovered vehicles to London and Manchester. If they break down in our area, we recover them to wherever they need to go.” Providing both recovery and servicing means the company can repair
vehicles it recovers rather than taking them elsewhere. That was illustrated recently with the recovery of a removals lorry, working on it until 10 o’clock at night to replace the clutch and gearbox because it was quicker and cheaper than recovering the vehicle to Edinburgh. It also enabled the vehicle to deliver the remainder of its load the following morning.
