Newton’s News
May has always been a special month for me, as towards the end of the month, I celebrate the anniversary of my marriage at St Budock Church. While its almost impossible to say when Cornwall looks at its best, weather depending, I think May might just achieve that accolade. Thanks to the great efforts of hundreds of local people both Falmouth and Penryn are looking good after the various ‘Spring Clean’ activities. I believe anyone living here is more aware than most of the natural environment, as a source of inspiration, wellbeing and employment.
Elections play a big part in my life and this May, like most years, brings elections. I am proud of one of our most important manifesto commitments: to work hard to ensure that we leave our natural environment in better shape than when we took office in 2010. Being custodians of the environment for our children and generations to come involves making difficult choices. While each of us has a responsibility to think about the choices we make and their impact on our environment, elected representatives have particular responsibilities. So one of our important choices is deciding who to vote for in elections. Balancing the need to grow more of our own food, generate more of our own energy and build more homes and work spaces for a growing local population while protecting our environment is challenging. Ensuring the necessary infrastructure investment is secured is essential too. The planning system has been reformed by the Government to enable smarter and more local decisions to made about how we use our land and work with our natural environment. Through the Local Plan, people have been enabled to have more control over shaping communities. The LibDems lead Cornwall Council with ‘Independents’ and they have developed a Local Plan that is currently operating.

The next Council, that will be elected this month, will have the vitally important job of evaluating the Local Plan and updating it. Making sure it is delivering for local communities, particularly genuinely affordable homes for local people. The evolution of the Local Plan should take account of the aspirations of the local community as reflected in the Neighbourhood Plans being developed in both Falmouth and Penryn. With such important opportunities to shape our communities, protect and enhance our precious natural

environment and also support the local economy, we need to elect councillors who have the motivation, skills and ability to make the best decisions for Falmouth and Penryn. Cornwall faces many challenges and significant opportunities. We will soon be marking the anniversary of the date the majority of people in our country decided our future lay outside the European Union. Whatever our feelings about that milestone in our history, I am confident that we can make a success of what lies ahead. We are a strong country with great values including, freedom, tolerance, compassion, respect for the rule of law and characteristics such as creativity and enterprise; all have served us well and I believe will for centuries to come. We are leaving the EU not Europe and I am determined to ensure we remain an outward facing global nation with excellent relationships with our neighbours and allies across Europe. Right now, I believe Cornwall needs all its elected representatives looking confidently to the future, not lamenting the decision to leave the EU. People with a positive attitude to work constructively with the Government, united in a shared ambition to get the best possible outcome for our Duchy and our country. It’s really important that you vote not only for the person that you think will be a strong local champion for the immediate area where you live but also someone who is part of a team of people from across Cornwall who have a positive, shared vision for the common good. People who are able to deliver the changes we need to see in Cornwall, particularly working more effectively in partnership to tackle the challenges facing our local NHS. As a result of devolution of power from Westminster to Cornwall Council, these local elections really matter to you so please do vote. I want to see a double devolution of power from Cornwall Councillors to local councillors so please make sure you vote in both elections. The next few years will shape the destiny of our Duchy and country for years to come, your vote really does count and will make a real difference.

BEWARE – ADDERS!! I wrote about adder bites around two years ago, but I make no apologies at all for reproducing pretty much the same article again now, as I’m sure with the sunny weather we’ve been having we will see our first cases of adder bites in dogs. See also our Facebook site: www.facebook.com/ rosemullionvets where there is also a piece on adder bites. More importantly, the weather has warmed up after the winter chill, the hedgerows are greening up and the swallows are back! Now, not only do we like that sort of weather, especially the sun, but adders like to bask in it as well. Also, adders are just coming out of hibernation, so are still generally a bit dozy; and their venom is also fairly concentrated compared to later on in the year. We commonly see cases in dogs walked on the Towans at Hayle, on the Goonhilly Downs, areas of the coastal path, and last year we had a new location, around Stithians lake. However, before you start panicking, bites are still quite rare, as usually snakes will hear and / or sense dogs in their vicinity, so will retreat into their nests. Also, the most important thing to remember is that treated promptly and appropriately, approximately 97% of cases make a full recovery. The following information will help to answer some of your questions regarding adder bites:
1. What do adders look like? Most adders are distinctively marked with a dark zig-zag running down the length of the spine, and an inverted ‘V’ or ‘X’ shape on the neck. Adults are 50-60cms long, and their colour ranges from light grey/brown to almost black.
2. When should I start to worry about my dog being bitten on a walk? Most adder bite cases occur between April and July. The snakes generally hibernate from October to March, but if the weather is warm enough they can be seen as early as February and as late as November. Most bites tend to occur in the afternoon when adders are more active and when the heat from the sun is at its maximum – they love to sunbathe!
08| FALMOUTH
Wave
3. Where are adders found? Their habitats include sand dunes, moorland, heathland, rocky hillsides and the edges of moorland – well, that’s pretty much the whole of the county! Particularly favourite spots seem to be the Hayle Towans and Goonhilly Downs, but they’re also about on the coastal paths too. They do seem to be on the increase, I think chiefly because they have very few or no predators.
4. What are the signs that my dog has been bitten? Most bites occur on the face, inside the mouth, or the front legs – and sometimes you will hear your dog yelp or cry when an adder has struck. Bites will cause swelling of the affected area within two hours, and it’s often dark-coloured and can become quite severe and painful. Sometimes you will also see two puncture marks in the centre of the swelling. Your dog may be lame or seemingly just ‘below par’, but in more serious cases they may have pale gums, bruising, drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea, and be quite lethargic. Worst case scenario is that they collapse, have breathing difficulties, start having tremors, and may deteriorate into convulsions.
treatment that your dog will get, depends on - The location of the bite: face and mouth are worst as the venom quickly gets into the circulation from the hefty blood supply to the face - The size of dog: most commonly it’s terriers who are affected, but the bigger the dog the bigger their circulation and the more dilute the venom - The amount of venom injected by the snake, thought to be worst early in the season - The amount the patient moves post-bite, hence why we advise carrying the dog to a car - Any pre-existing disease your dog may have, such as kidney or liver problems (which would reduce the dog’s ability to detoxify the venom), or heart disease (which might intensify clotting problems and circulation failure due to shock). However, these serious effects only occur in around 5% of cases, so don’t panic!! Pictured is “Harry” who was bitten on the face whilst walking on The Lizard a couple of years ago. He was promptly treated with intravenous fluids, European Adder anti-venom, and pain relief, and recovered sufficiently to be discharged in 24 hours!
5. What should I do if I think my dog has been bitten? If possible try to carry your dog to your car to try and reduce the spread of the venom via their circulation. Keep him quiet and warm while contacting your vet. Using a cold water compress on the affected area may help to limit some of the swelling.
6. What will my vet do to treat my dog and how will he respond to the treatment? Treatment for adder bites involves pain relief, intravenous fluids to support the circulation, specific “European Adder anti-venom” given intravenously in some (but not all) cases, antibiotics, and they will be hospitalised for monitoring. We don’t use the anti-venom on all cases as there is a risk of an allergic reaction of the dog to it (which could be worse than the bite), but in a lot of cases there’s no choice. The severity of the bite, and therefore the
One last thing to add to all our cat owners out there … it is possible for your cat to be bitten by an adder as well, though MUCH less likely!!

Beryl’s Bites
INGREDIENTS
50g butter 2 tsp mustard powder 600ml milk 200g mature cheddar, grated 2 large potatoes, sliced into rounds 1 head broccoli, cut into florets 200g frozen peas small bunch chives, snipped 50g flour 1 head cauliflower, cut into little florets
Green Garden Veg Pie
METHOD 1 Melt the butter in a saucepan, then stir in the flour and mustard powder and cook for 1 min. Gradually stir in the milk until smooth with no lumps, then keep stirring until the mixture begins to bubble and thickens to a creamy sauce. Remove from the heat, then stir in all but a handful of the grated cheese. 2. Heat oven to 220C/fan 200C/gas 7 and bring a large pan of water to the boil. Cook the potato slices for 5 mins, tip in the broccoli and cauliflower for another 3 mins, then finally add the peas for 1
more min. Drain all the veg and pat dry. Reserve enough potato slices to cover the top of the finished dish, then gently stir the rest of the vegetables into the sauce with the chives. 3. Tip into a deep ovenproof dish, arrange over the reserved potato slices, then sprinkle with remaining cheddar. Bake for 20-25 mins until the topping is golden and crisp, then serve straight from the dish.
Serve with a crisp green salad and a few cherry tomatoes.
