What we do At Granite Planet we offer activities for

groups and individuals of all ages. Birthday parties are 1½ hours of climbing for group’s age 5 yrs and upwards, you can bring your own party food, just don’t forget the cake and candles! Taster sessions are just what they say, a chance for you to have a go and see if you enjoy the sport, up to four climbers working with an instructor for 1½ hours. Induction courses are designed to give you all the skills required to come and use the centre, they are 4 lessons totalling 6 hours of instruction to take you from beginner to a competent climber. Once you know how to climb and belay you could move onto an indoor lead course which is the next step on progressing with the sport.

Children’s clubs & NICAS For youngsters we run children’s clubs for those age 5 yrs and upwards, and from the age of 8 they can register for the NICAS scheme (National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme), this works through different levels to develop their climbing skills. We also run holiday clubs from Monday to Friday. Groups Schools,Youth Clubs, Cadets, Scouts, Beavers,

Hen & Stag parties whatever your group we can accommodate you and tailor a session to suit. New Bouldering Area How about trying out a session of bouldering on our new wall. Bouldering is a sport which does not require any equipment except rock shoes, which you can hire at the centre. A fantastic way to keep fit and burn calories and have fun at the same time, it is a big problem solving exercise. Who can boulder? It can be an individual or group activity, anyone can have a go. Our youngest boulderer is now 4, and started when she was 16 months, her two brothers at 6 and 8 years of age are competent boulderers and climbers. Our oldest climber here is now 83. If under 18 a parental consent form is required and they will need to be on one of our club sessions or accompanied by an adult. Over 18 can use the facilities whenever they wish, we open 10 – 10 Monday to Friday, and 10 - 6 Saturday & Sunday. We hope to see you soon

TO STERILISE JARS AND LIDS It’s important to sterilise all jars or bottles and their lids before filling them.Wash them in hot soapy water and rinse thoroughly, or put them through a hot dishwasher cycle. Leave to drain until nearly dry. Place upside down in a cold oven. Heat for 10-15 minutes at 150C/130C fan/300F/gas 2. Set jars top down and lids top uppermost on a clean cloth until you are ready to use them, so that dust or dirt, which could contaminate the contents, can’t be trapped inside. Or you can boil them in a large pan of water for 15 minutes, dry them with a clean cloth and reserve on another cloth, as before. For pickles and chutneys, use vinegar-proof (non-corrosive) lids.

Don’t get caught out this winter, have your car’s vital winter checks done at

Tregoniggie Industrial Estate, Falmouth. TR11 4SN

Winter Motoring Prepare for the worst and hope for the best Two out of the last three winters have seen widespread snow and ice for weeks on end with temperatures regularly falling below -10°C. You’re more likely to break down in a bad winter – Emergency breakdown services had its busiest day on Monday, January 4, 2010, and then again, less than 12 months later, on Monday, December 20, 2010 when patrols handled more than 28,000 breakdowns. There’s more risk of delays too but not necessarily in the way you’d expect. If vehicles ahead lose control – a jack-knifed lorry for example – you won’t be able to get through no matter how well-equipped your car is with winter tyres or chains. You could face a wait of several hours until the blockage and other traffic ahead has been cleared. Here’s what you need to do this winter to reduce the risk of a breakdown and make sure that you are equipped to deal with the conditions. Xpress Garage can check your car for you... Antifreeze – check coolant level regularly and, if required, top-up with a mixture of the correct type of antifreeze. Your garage should check concentration to ensure adequate cold temperature protection. Battery – the most common cause of winter

CHECKLIST

breakdowns. A battery more than five years old may struggle in the cold - get it checked and replaced if necessary to avoid the inconvenience of an unplanned failure. Xpress offers a comprehensive computerised battery check with print out. Fuel – keep at least a quarter of a tank in case of unexpected delay. Lights – check and clean all lights regularly to make sure you can see and be seen clearly. Carry spare bulbs. Tyres – should have at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring. Consider winter tyres for improved safety. Check pressures at least every fortnight. Windscreen – reduce dazzle from the low sun by keeping the screen clean inside and out. Now is a good time to renew worn wiper blades. Screen wash – use a 50% mix of a good quality screen wash to reduce the chance of freezing in frosty weather. Locks and door seals – stop doors freezing shut with a thin coat of polish or Vaseline on rubber door seals. A squirt of water dispersant (wD-40) in locks will help stop them freezing.

Well it’s nearly the end of the year so November is a good time to finish a lot of the winter jobs before Christmas and the worst of any bad weather we may get. At the nursery we are preparing for one of the busiest times of year, Christmas Trees. There have been no price rises this year on trees under 10’ so we are pleased to say our prices are the same as last year.

Diary for November

• Now is the best time to plant tulip bulbs • It is not too late to plant out spring bedding as long as there is no frost on the ground • Now is a good time to plant Magnolias so you get the benefit of the beautiful spring flowers • Keep on gathering up rose leaves to help prevent infections like blackspot next year • If you haven’t already done so lift Gladiolus, Dahlia and Begonias. Remove dead foliage and store in a dry dark space ready for next year • Clear away old foliage from herbaceous perennials and lift and divide any overcrowded clumps. This helps to keep the plants vigour so giving a better display • Lift parsnips after they have had a frost so this helps the flavour • Divide Rhubarb once they are dormant • November is the best time to spread manure on the veggie plot to give

maximum time for it to rot down over the winter • Stake large cabbages, cauliflower etc. to prevent them rocking in the wind. It is also worth covering them with a net to prevent the birds from eating them • The bare root fruit season starts from mid –November and goes through to midMarch. This is by far the best time for planting fruit trees and bushes • Check stored fruit regularly and remove any bad ones straight away • Apple and Pear trees can be pruned from mid-November onwards but they must be fully dormant before pruning starts • Keep clearing fallen leaves off the lawn. I know it is a bit of a repetitive job but it is important to do to avoid dead spots on the lawn and to keep it healthy • Raise pot plants off the floor to prevent waterlogging • Clean your gardening tools and apply a wipe of linseed oil on them to prevent rust

Make someone's Christmas with a unique handmade gift. At Adore we offer the best of British contemporary craft including many local artists.

Bring this advert to the store to enjoy 15% off any purchase of £20 or more. Offer does not apply to commissions or special orders. Valid until 30th November 2015. You can find us at 31 Church Street, Falmouth TR11 3EQ Tel. 01326 619542 www.adorecontemporaryboutique.com Opening times: Monday - Saturday 10.00am - 5.00pm.

Paul’s Pet Page

tMB, PhD, MRCVS PAUL COCKERHAM MA, Ve ll animal and large animal veterinary h sma Has over 30 years’ experience in bot e eon at Rosemullion Veterinary Practic practice and is a senior veterinary surg

Tooth Ache - All you need to know – part 2

Last month I covered what happens in the course of your pet’s teeth degenerating as they get older, with all the hassles of plaque and tartar formation on the teeth themselves, slowly but surely leading to painful gum disease. And that’s often the point when owners start to realise that there’s something wrong: there may be some bleeding from the gums, pawing at the mouth, and most often of all, a pretty horrible smell! Just the job when your dog wants to give you a quick kiss of appreciation!!

If you are worried about such things and decide to take your pet to a vet for an assessment of their teeth, then it’ll probably be the case that they will suggest a dental operation. This will, most likely, be a ‘Scale and Polish’ similar to how a dental hygienist works on our teeth, but there may be the need for teeth to be extracted if they are beyond saving.

SO WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Your pet will be put under a full general anaesthetic – this is absolutely necessary to make sure the vet can see quite clearly inside the mouth, and is able to assess the state of individual teeth with gum and tooth probes, just like a

dentist does in your own mouth! If your pet is elderly then it is prudent to carry out a routine blood test prior to any sedative or anaesthetic drugs being given, to establish that liver and kidney functions are satisfactory, as these organs are crucial in getting rid of the anaesthetic from the body. If there are any issues with their functions then your vet will not only discuss these potential risks with you, but probably suggest that your pet is given intravenous fluids during the anaesthetic so as to help wash the drugs out of their body and secure a quick recovery. Sometimes as well, antibiotic treatments are given before a full dental prophylaxis is carried out, to make sure that any bacteria living on the gums and inside the tooth sockets, are pretty much killed before they are disturbed. Worst case scenario, for instance, might be that a rotten tooth whose root is hooching with bugs, is removed, liberating these bacteria directly into the blood system…. Not good.

GOING ON….

When you pet is under anaesthetic the tartar that is visible, and that which is underneath the gum line, will be removed using hand tools and water-cooled ultrasonic cleaning equipment. Any teeth that are obviously causing problems will be carefully examined, and frequently the decision is made to extract them. The vet has to take the practical view that unlike our own teeth (which a dentist can have

another look at in 4, 5 or 6 months’ time), then because of the risks – and expense! – of an anaesthetic, they have to be fairly judgemental in what teeth are worth saving and what aren’t. If your dog is 13 years old for instance, the vet has to take the long view that they are probably not going to have another dental procedure in their life. The vet has to make sure therefore that by the end of the procedure, whatever teeth are in the mouth are healthy and are not going to cause any problems in the future. All that done, the teeth are then polished to smooth the enamel and help slow the future build-up of plaque; the mouth is washed out; and – particularly when extractions are done – some

drinking water. However, while all of these things will help, nothing is as good as actually cleaning your pet’s teeth regularly with special pastes and brushes that are designed for your pet.

To start with you should get your pet used to the taste of the toothpaste by letting your pet lick some off your finger, and it’s best to start this training at the time you usually feed your pet as this is the most pleasurable time for them. Give them lots of praise when they start to lick the paste. When they are used to the taste, try putting it on a brush. Then – and this is the big one – hold your pet’s jaws closed and gently brush the bristles against the teeth at an angle of about 45 degrees to the teeth. The outer surfaces of the teeth are by far the more important. And if you’ve got this

painkillers are injected.

HOW CAN I PREVENT TARTAR BUILD UP?

Some cats or dogs mineralise plaque more quickly than others – each animal is an individual. If you start at the beginning, specialist dental foods will help, and dry foods are good because they reduce tartar build up. Also, dogs can play with special chew toys – though that sort of thing is way below the dignity of cats! – and you can also add special antiplaque mouthwash to your pet’s

far, quit whilst you’re ahead! But if you don’t get this far don’t worry or get despondent, you can still use the special foods, toys, mouthwashes and gels that can be applied on a daily basis. But best of luck and remember if you are worried about your pet’s teeth there is no time like the present to start finding out about the free dental nurse clinics your local vets may be running!

newton’s news

The recent harvest moon was

beautiful to see and along with the alignment of the sun and moon, it brought unusually high tides. Fortunately, the high tides caused only minor flooding locally. Had the wind been stronger or the high tides been accompanied with heavy rain we might have experienced dreadful flooding as seen in the recent past.

As a result of climate change, we know we will be experiencing more erratic weather, so it is vitally important that we all take precautions to prevent flooding. Understanding our homes and businesses' flood risks needs to become a normal activity that we all do. Taking sensible precautions too. Just as we take precautions to reduce the risk of burglary or fire or carbon monoxide poisoning in our homes and work places, we need to do the same for flooding.

But where to go for impartial advice and information? I recently joined the annual Cornwall Community Flood Forum with Lucy Isaacson and Martin Alvey. They were joined by experts from The Environment Agency, Department for the Environment and Rural Affairs and Cornwall Council. By calling the Cornwall Community Flood Forum on 07581 736347 you can obtain useful information for you and your community on what steps you can take to avoid flooding. Cornwall Flood Forum is a pioneering community led flood prevention scheme, with taxpayer funding, to enable partnerships in communities to work together to prevent flooding. From alerting neighbours to the possibility of flooding and helping elderly residents to fit flood gates, to working on community flood prevention schemes such as creating ponds and wetland areas.

The Government has given South West Water new tools to help it do a good job upgrading and maintaining the sewerage management systems. Building on legislation that secured a yearly £50 rebate for all South West Water customers, the Water Act helps water companies manage the challenges of increased population and a changing climate. Water quality in Falmouth, Penryn and the Helford is being improved as part of a £1 billion investment from South West Water from this year until 2020. Industry regulator Ofwat has given its backing to the works that will include improving the quality of water produced at College Water Treatment Works, thanks to a new "granular activated" carbon filtration system. Water quality will also improve as a result of a project being undertaken by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust for South West Water on better managing the catchment area of the Argal and College reservoirs.

Money is also being spent on upgrading sewage treatment works around the Fal estuary to protect and improve the quality of water around our shores and beaches. Improvements to the quality of the water in the Fal estuary is essential for our local fisheries too, especially our native oyster.
