Paul’s Pet Page PAUL COCKERHAM MA, VetMB, PhD, MRCVS
Has over 30 years’ experience in both small animal and large animal veterinary practice and is a senior veterinary surgeon at Rosemullion Veterinary Practice
“ALABAMA ROT” Some of you may have heard about this condition as it has off and on been the subject of articles in newspapers, as well as on the BBC Local TV News as being of concern to dog owners in the south-west. It was first noted in the 1980s in the USA in Greyhounds, but there have been some cases found in the UK from around 2012, especially in and around the New Forest area. Several cases occurred last year, and although the number of cases overall remains low, it’s still a very frightening disease.
of the skin – these things range in size from 0.5 cms to 5 cms in diameter, so they can be quite large. So, initially, you may just notice your dog licking at their foot or leg and it may not be clear what the problem is underneath the fur.
Numerous tests have been done on affected animals looking at blood analyses, tissue samples, bacteriology, virology, toxicology and so on, but nothing has been consistently found in all the cases so far examined as to suggest what it is that’s producing this condition. So we still don’t know.
HOW IT MIGHT AFFECT YOUR DOG AND WHAT YOU SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR
Right at the start, affected dogs typically have some kind of damage to the skin of the end of a limb (below the elbow and stifle) although lesions have also been seen on the face and underneath the dog – the chest and belly. The skin damage may start off as areas of reddened skin, or mild blisters, but they go on to form deep ulcers going through the entire thickness
www.falmouthwave.co.uk
WHAT’S TO BE DONE?
First of all, this disease is still very rare. On the other hand, skin damage / grazes / cuts / ulcerations on the legs and feet of dogs are very common, and only to be expected when dogs run at full pelt across rough ground! This traumatic kind of skin damage tends to get better quickly though, whereas the lesions typical of Alabama Rot tend to get worse. Secondly, however, If you are a dog owner and are concerned about your pet, please speak to your local vet in the first instance. If they are particularly worried then there is a specialist referral centre in Hampshire which is currently gathering evidence on this condition, and advice can easily be sought from them.
WHAT IS IT?
Well, the truth is, nobody’s that sure, though it is known by a much more scientific name of “Cutaneous or Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy” (or CRGV). Whatever the cause is, it produces tiny blood clots in the blood vessels which block them and this lack of blood damages the affected tissues. In the skin, this causes ulceration; but in the kidney it can lead to severe organ malfunction – commonly kidney failure.
but nothing more than that recently. So far.
Other than that, dogs are typically otherwise feeling very well and full of it, but over the subsequent one to nine days they develop the clinical signs of acute kidney injury. These signs may include being very thirsty, depressed, off their food or vomiting. Some dogs will have both skin problems AND be showing the signs of the kidney disease at the same time, but only very rarely do the kidney symptoms flare up before the skin ones. Essentially, the kidneys progressively shut down so the dog goes into an almost irreversible metabolic collapse. There is no apparent breed, age or sex predilection. Over a hundred cases are thought to have been seen in the UK over the past five years, coming from all parts of the UK. To start with there were clusters of cases from the New Forest area, but now that the disease is becoming better known, affected dogs are being diagnosed over a wider area. There was a proven case in Launceston in 2013, and several very suspicious ones around Penzance in 2014,
Initial investigations of a suspicious case would include blood and urine tests to monitor for the development of the kidney stages of this disease, and any potentially affected dog would be hospitalised with intravenous fluids and other supportive treatment administered to try and maintain kidney function. Although some dogs have survived, the overall prognosis, sadly, is poor.
IN THE FUTURE
We need more evidence to try and find a cause – as despite the hundred or so cases so far we don’t appear to be any nearer to finding anything out. Whatever it is though, remember that cases are VERY rare – but if you are concerned, get your dog checked over by your vet and let them decide! Spring into Easter! Check out our
high street’s ‘new season’ treats
Put a Spring in your step! Spring and “springtime” generates ideas of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal, resurrection, regrowth and the return of CHOCOLATE EASTER EGGS! After the melancholy endured from a dark, cold and gloomy winter, comes the season of longer and brighter days. Sunlight triggers our body to produce the vitamin D3, increasing hormone serotonin in our brain, making us feel happier, strengthening the bones and boosting energy levels. With more hours in the day we tend to become more active and accomplish past dreaded activities (like cleaning, DIY or gardening), thus making us feel rewarded and prepared to enjoy some well-deserved free time in the fresh air. With Easter bank holiday on 14th April, now is a good time to plan some outdoor walks, to witness the flower bloom, breath in the fresh Spring air and organise an Easter hunt treat on the way? Okay, we have to admit that some years, despite our excitement, the glorious sunshine can be obstructed by some rainy clouds! However even with the uncertainties of the weather, Wave team has found loads of suggestions from our local shops, to treat our loved ones and ourselves and celebrate the beginning of the brighter season.

FILMREVIEW REEL 1: The Boss Baby REEL 2: Going in Style DreamWorks Animation and the director of Madagascar invite you to meet a most unusual baby. He wears a suit, speaks with the voice and wit of Alec Baldwin, and stars in the animated comedy, DreamWorks’ The Boss Baby. The Boss Baby is a hilariously universal story about how a new baby’s arrival impacts a family, told from the point of view of a delightfully unreliable narrator, a wildly imaginative 7 year old named Tim. With a sly, heart-filled message about the importance of family, DreamWorks‘ The Boss Baby is an authentic and broadly appealing original comedy for all ages. Release date - 7th April
Oscar winners Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby), Michael Caine (The Cider House Rules, Hannah and Her Sisters) and Alan Arkin (Little Miss Sunshine) team up as lifelong buddies Willie, Joe and Al, who decide to buck retirement and step off the straight-and-narrow for the first time in their lives when their pension fund becomes a corporate casualty, in director Zach Braff’s comedy Going in Style. Garden
InInthe theGarden Garden
It is nice to finally feel the warm sunshine again. It feels like the new gardening season is with us at last. We are very busy on the nursery with loads of new fresh stock, much of which we have grown ourselves. The bare root season is now over but we have plenty of pot grown trees in stock, including large ornamentals.
Diary for APRIL
• Apply a layer of mulch around your perennials, trees and shrubs to help slow down water evaporation when the weather gets hot. • Feed trees, shrubs and hedges with a fertilizer such as blood, fish and bone, Growmore or similar. Lightly fork in to the surface. • Roses are very greedy plants and would benefit from a feed with a good rose fertiliser. • Plant new plants. • If you have plants that need support, get the supports in now, if you haven’t already done so. It is easier when there is less growth and they are supported from their first growth. • Tie in climbing plants and
rambling roses. This is an on-going job all season. • Check tree ties firstly to weather they need replacing and secondly that they are not too tight and strangling the tree. • Prune Forsythia as soon as they have finished flowering. Cut back to strong young shoots. • Trim winter flowering Heathers. This will stop the plant from becoming leggy. • Dead head any daffodils and tulips as the flowers fade. Do not cut the foliage back. Allow the foliage to die back naturally so the energy goes back into the bulb for next year. • If you haven’t already done so, think about getting your early potatoes in. • Don’t forget to keep a rotation of salad crops going so you have home
grown available all season. • Plant out strawberry beds making sure that you enrich the soil with very well-rotted manure or homemade compost. If you cover your plants with a cloche, it will encourage an earlier crop. • Mulch fruit trees with wellrotted manure or compost making sure it is not against the trunk. • Apply a slow release fertiliser around the bottom of raspberry canes to encourage a good crop. • Apply a high nitrogen feed to your lawn to give it a boost. A good method is to apply a combined fertiliser, weed killer and moss killer. Three jobs done in one! • Now is a good time to be repairing or replacing tired old lawns but if you re-seed or turf, make sure the soil is kept moist.

• Before mowing the lawn, brush of any worm castings to avoid leaving small muddy patches. • Mow the lawn once a week but not to lower setting at first. Lower the blade nearer to the end of the month. • Re-cut the edges of the lawn if they have become untidy or broken down. • Top dress containers with new compost. Remove the top couple of inches of soil, moss and weeds and replace with fresh. This is also a good opportunity to top dress with a slow release granular fertiliser.

Local businesses and employers have had a tough time through the recession and have worked hard to secure jobs and grow their enterprises, creating new apprenticeship and employment opportunities for more people. Latest information shows that there are record levels of people in employment here. It’s well worth noting the record levels of young people and women in employment. Of the jobs created since 2010 75% were full time jobs and over the last year average wages have risen above inflation. Recent changes to apprenticeships mean that people of nearly all ages can get into work or change direction by becoming an apprentice. There are a number of free services that help people of a wide range of abilities to develop their employability skills, secure qualifications to enable them to get into work and generally support people into employment. Our local Job Center work coaches can provide more information about these services or please contact me. Local businesses are the backbone of the community, providing not only employment opportunities but contributing taxes to fund our vitally important public and armed services. I am determined that local businesses get the support they need to thrive. I am pleased that in the recent Budget the Chancellor made changes to Business Rates so more businesses will not see a rise. Also the money given to councils to make discretionary Business Rate reductions is being doubled. I am working with a number of local businesses to help them get the support they are entitled to so please be in touch if you feel that I can help you. I am also continuing my campaign to persuade Cornwall Council to stop charging our town and parish councils Business Rates on our public toilets. It good to see a significant rise in people setting up their own businesses. There is a great deal of support to enable people to both set up and grow their business here. All the information about the support that is available can be found by accessing the Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Growth Hub. This is a free service that provides a one stop shop of advice and navigation to organisations that can help. Details of the European Funding that continues to be available to Cornwall as well as a wide range of grant schemes from the UK government can all be found by contacting the Growth Hub. A significant trend over the past few years has been the growing number of people becoming selfemployed. For years, the self-employed have paid less in tax – yet got less in workplace support. The Budget brought the
to advertise call ashley on 07800986216
taxation of self-employed people into sharp focus. I think it’s time for a new and fairer deal for the self-employed. One of the first acts of our new Prime Minister was to commission Matthew Taylor of the RSA to undertake a review into modern patterns of employment, often referred to as the “gig” economy. Like the Prime Minister, I am concerned about the insecurity and lack of support that can come with some types of selfemployment. A new deal for the self-employed would offer better ways of dealing with five key issues facing the selfemployed – sickness insurance, injury insurance, parental leave, tax payments and pensions. People in work should be treated equally and fairly – be they employed or selfemployed. Employed workers get sick pay and better injury cover that the self-employed. Insurance policies are expensive and often the cover isn’t very good. That’s why any new deal should cover sickness payments and injuries so that the employed and selfemployed are treated the same way. Allowance for parental leave paid to the self-employed is £139.58 a week. Far less than the minimum wage of £260 for a 35 hour week. Employed workers get a much better deal. That’s unfair – and the playing field should be levelled up so that workers and the self-employed are treated the same. Self-employed people historically received less pension support than employees from the state. Welfare benefits and statutory payments, particularly the State Pension, were lower. The self-employed now have access to the same State Pension as employees. Yet employees now have a system of auto-enrolment – extending ease of access to the system to the self Commented [1]: employed and making it easier for self-employed people to have access to simpler pensions would help self-employed workers to save for retirement. I think that if these benefits were introduced for self-employed people they could be paid for by National Insurance Contributions as people in employment pay. A level playing field with a fairer National Insurance system that works for everyone. Finally, like many readers I am preparing for family and friends coming to stay over Easter. I am looking forward to sharing with them the wide range of delicious, locally grown and produced food and drink - a great way we can all do our bit to support our great local food producers and retailers. Happy Easter
