Julian Power Garden Design Services

In the " Heartlands " of Cornwall, the traditional mining territory of Redruth, a small miracle has occurred!

On returning to her

hometown of Redruth, after sometime working in New Zealand, Mrs Tracy Homerston and her husband Neil, decided it was time to bring the garden at their formerly rented house " back to life."

By chance they visited Carnon Downs garden centre one Saturday afternoon and came across the garden designer, Julian Power who was sketching garden plans in the shop at the time.

Mrs Homerston said: "our specification was to create an atmosphere within the garden to reflect our travels and compliment the house.”

“The garden design process can be extremely emotional and to be able to see the plants in situ, at Carnon downs, with Julian’s help, was really helpful. There is such a variety to choose from”

The structure, in both planting and hard landscaping compliment the maturity of the Victorian town house beautifully and allowed our dream to come true.

For More information and a friendly chat please contact Julian Power on 07967 350558 or visit: www.julianpower.co.uk

Who are we? We are an indoor climbing wall situated on

Kernick Industrial Estate; we cater for all types of climber, from complete novices to those who use the centre to train themselves ready to climb outside on the local cliffs, climbers ages here range from 18 months up to 83 years of age

What can climbing do for you?

As a sport it is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK, it is very good for using most of your muscle groups, and is one of the best ways to keep yourself fit. There are several different ways of climbing indoors. It is not a sport which relies just on muscle power; it is problem solving and technique.

Bouldering

You do not require any equipment except a pair of rock shoes; you climb low level areas and complete climbing routes which are set by others. This can mean climbing on overhanging areas as well as vertical walls.

Top rope climbing

This is where you work as a pair on ropes which are already in place, one is the climber the other the belayer (they are the person who keeps the climber safe at all times) this time you are climbing to whatever height the route takes you. Either use any hold that is in front of you which is called rainbow climbing, or follow the route which will be a set by colour or shape of the holds. Grades of difficulty start at 3A, the higher the number and letter the harder the climb, the highest grade we have is 8A. Climbers are now achieving far higher

grades with the improvement in footwear and training, which has improved most sports over the last few years.

Lead climbing

This takes you to a whole new level, when top rope climbing you always have a rope above you so if you slip with your feet or let go with your fingers it is never very far until you are sitting in your harness. When you are lead climbing you use a different type of rope called a dynamic rope, which can stretch up to a third of its length. You start with the rope tied to you at the bottom of the climb, with your partner (the belayer) holding it with a belay plate attached to them. You climb the wall and clip the rope to karabiners (clips) every metre up the wall.

How do you start?

Come and have a go at bouldering or book a taster session, this will give you an insight into what is required regarding skills to be able to be safe when you come and use the centre. If you already know how to climb all you need to do is show us you can tie into a harness with a suitable knot and belay safely. There is no time limit when you come in on your own and are competent, you can stay all day or leave the centre and come back later the same day without having to pay again. Have a look at our website: www.graniteplanetclimbing.com to see the range of activities we provide from children’s clubs, taster sessions, birthday parties, induction courses, leading courses and climbing outside on local cliffs.

FILM REEL 1: Touch of Evil

REVIEW

In a seedy US-Mexican border town, detective Miguel Vargas (Charlton Heston) and his newly wed wife Susie (Janet Leigh) become embroiled in a deadly maelstrom of crime and corruption as Miguel's investigations into a narcotics rings bring him into conflict with local law-enforcer Hank Quinlan (Orson Welles). The last feature Welles made in Hollywood, Touch of Evil is a virtuoso foray into film noir, exhibiting his extraordinary sense of cinematic style, vivid characterisation and an almost Shakespearian flair for tragedy. Indeed, there are many who would argue that it rivals Citizen Kane as Welles' masterpiece.

FIRE SAFETY AND SECURITY IN - AROUND YOUR PREMISES

Do you have adequate arrangements in place to discourage an intruder from choosing your property to burgle? Burglars choose premises with no or little obvious security. Studies show that

Burglars are less likely to gain entry when a house has two or more security devices (including window locks, dead bolts, security lights, and alarms). Studies of offenders show that burglars may avoid houses with good locks, burglar bars or other security devices. The presence of an obvious alarm will immediately make a potential intruder think twice. This is important if you or family members are out and even more so if you are in the premises at the time: not all burglaries

occur when you and your family are out. Audacious

burglars will break in when you or your loved ones are inside asleep. Discovering a burglar inside your house in the middle of the night is a traumatic and dangerous experience.

Intruder Alarms are much more affordable now. You

can have just an audible system – one that activates a sounder on the outside of the house and relies on the racket to scare off any opportunistic burglar. These start from as little as £99.00 for a basic system. Or you can have a monitored system that will dial out to a central station when the alarm

left for years without being checked. PIR detectors degrade and backup batteries fail. You service your car because you don’t want it to let you down when you most need it. Isn’t that also true of a burglar alarm? Imagine, there is suddenly a spate of breakins in your area, you decide to use the security system for the first time for ages, then discover is won’t work.

CCTV: Nowadays, a decent

quality CCTV system costs only a few hundred pounds to install. More and more households and other premises are choosing to monitor their immediate s u rro u n d i n g s using this t e c h n o l o g y, which can be recorded on very high capacity hard disk recorders over a cycle of several days or weeks. But BEWARE. You cannot monitor outside your own premises or point your cameras down the street as this may violate the privacy of your neighbours and passers by. And by law, you need a warning notice – which is a good thing as it helps keep the criminals away. CCTV cameras are nowadays tiny and discreet with economy LED illumination. Combined with a bright LED IR activated security light, your perimeter is both monitored and visible. Walk around you house or business premises and add up what a serious burglary or arson attack

requirement to register them with the local authority varies according to the area where they are located. However, they are still bound to abide by the RRO, registered or not, and take precautions to protect occupants from fire according to the policy of the local authority. Most landlords are only too aware of the law, and also take their responsibility with regard to fire very seriously, taking all necessary precautions. But suitable digs are not always easy to find. The reality is that no-one is going to turn down that sweet location just because all the smoke alarms are hanging off the ceilings, or the doors onto the escape route don’t seem fire proof, or they are the one with the room at the top of the house. The prospect of death or injury from fire is simply not in the equation when the hustings for accommodation is underway.

What can you do in such a situation? What are you looking

for? If you insist on going ahead, if you really need to live there, then the only solution, is to take your own precautions. The landlord must have had any gas appliances serviced annually. Do not fail to ask for the certificate and don’t live there if it cannot be provided. Death from carbon monoxide poisoning is all too

Use your head with fire.

Don’t burn candles and incense in open containers- ensure the rising heat from the flame cannot start a fire, especially if forgotten. Make sure the cooker is switched off after you use it. Close doors at night. Don’t leave electrical equipment on standby, or overload sockets with trailing extensions. Make sure that you and your cohabitees have all got an alternative fire escape plan, depending on where your room is in the building.

Now that the cold weather is approaching it is time to start thinking about those winter jobs. At the nursery we are preparing for the arrival of this seasons bare root fruit trees and bushes. We are really keen to be known as the place for fruit and ornamental trees with many native trees already in stock.

Diary for October

• There is still time to plant daffodil and other spring flowering bulbs to give an early splash of colour next year. • If your pots and containers are looking past their best refresh them with some autumn bedding • October is a great month for planting new hedging • Prune climbing and rambling Roses and tie in the stems to prevent wind damage over the next few months • Keep on top of clearing leaves. This will help to prevent diseases like black spot on Roses and dead patches on lawns • Harvest Squash’s and Pumpkins before the first frost • Harvest Apples and Pears. You can tell when they are ready by lifting them in the palm of your hand, a slight twist and a gentle pull and they should come away easily • Any diseased fruit should be removed from the tree and the ground to help prevent disease next year • Wrap glue bands around the trunks of

Apple trees to trap winter moth females whose caterpillars shred the spring blossom • Where possible apply winter wash to the trunks and branches of fruit trees to kill off over-wintering pests • If your greenhouse is empty, now is a very good time to clean and disinfect it. • Remove any greenhouse shading to allow maximum light in for the plants you have in it • Try to give the lawn a final mow, trim the edges and a light rake to ease the thatch from the surface. • New turf can still be laid before the first frost as autumn rain will help to settle the turf in • Collect up fallen leaves and compost in a leaf bin to create leaf mulch. Leaf mulch is a great soil conditioner • The bare root season is nearly here, normally mid-November to mid-March so it is worth planning any new Fruit Trees or Bushes and Ornamental Trees

Tooth Ache - All you need to know – part 1

I thought that I would use this month’s article to explain what it is about and why the care of your pet’s teeth is so important. All I’m going to write about now is what dental disease is, and how it affects your pet – and then over the next two months I’ll tackle how to treat it at home and how we treat cases in the practice, whether your pet is a dog, cat or rabbit!

Dental disease is one of the most frequent ailments seen by veterinary surgeons and can be found in the majority of cats over 2 years of age and most dogs over 3. It is almost certainly as painful for your pet as it would be for you but your pet lacks the same powers of communication as us so are unable to let you know they are in pain. As a result of this it is only relatively recently that these problems have not been overlooked.

Let’s start with cats and dogs

Cat’s and dog’s mouths are naturally very unhygienic environments, teeming with bacteria. It is these bacteria that are the root cause of most of your pet’s potential problems.

What are the most common dental diseases to be aware of?

not removed quickly it can become mineralised and this becomes TARTAR (often also called calculus just to confuse people). It is the bacterial products and decaying food that stick to the tartar that is one of the major causes of bad breath. Tartar is easily recognisable by its brown colour. You can normally first see this tartar at the join between the gum and the tooth and is most usually first found on the back teeth – the molars and pre-molars as well as the long canine teeth.

Sooner or later the accumulation of tartar on the surface of the tooth will lead to GINGIVITIS this is an inflammation of the gum – you can see how the gum is reddened and sore. If untreated it will result in the gums receding and this will create further problems. If gingivitis is caught at an early enough stage then it is possible through professional veterinary treatment to achieve a full recovery.

It all starts with PLAQUE. As in humans, bacterial plaque can accumulate on the surface of the tooth, it is almost impossible to see as it forms a virtually invisible layer over the tooth and if this is

But if nothing is done, eventually the gums will recede far enough to expose the root of the tooth. PERIDONTAL DISEASE is irreversible. When the root becomes exposed the cavity can then become infected which will lead to the bone and ligaments that support the tooth being destroyed. This in turn leads to excessively wobbly teeth and eventually tooth loss. To cap it all, infections may spread into and around the socket that cause the formation of pus and a foul odour, this can then spread deep into the socket and create an abscess or an even more severe problem.

Once periodontal disease starts the degenerative changes cannot be reversed. The changes then make it easier for more plaque to accumulate so more tartar will collect and finally further disease.

So what signs should I look out for?

There are a number of common signs that could alert you to the possibility of dental problems with your pet: • If your pet goes off its food suddenly - your pet may approach the food bowl and then back away or be reluctant to eat

• Chewing with obvious discomfort • Food dropping from the mouth when eating • Difficulty swallowing • Persistent dribbling possibly sometimes with blood • Very bad breath • Head shaking • Marked weight loss

What next?

What do I do if my pet has any of the things mentioned above? Before I cover what can be done as treatment and or prevention I really want to stress what you should not do. Never try to remove the tartar yourself with a metal instrument! Potentially you could harm your pet’s mouth. Equally importantly you will realise that you have now got your hand inside the mouth of a scared pet – I’d have a small bet that the next thing that happens is you get bitten! What will also happen is you’ll probably damage the surface of the tooth by creating microscopic scratches on it and this will encourage a more rapid formation of plaque that will cause further disease. Never try to use human toothpaste to brush your pet’s teeth. Human toothpaste is designed to foam and not be swallowed. Dogs universally hate the taste and cats can become ill if they regularly swallow it. I suppose it should come as no surprise but the honest advice is take it to your vet – and that’s what I’ll cover next month.

STAN’S REVIEWS AND PREVIEWS Suggestions by Stan and written by Kristian Greet Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom - Pain All Formats The fifth (and quite possibly

the last) instalment of the franchise that started back in the 80s makes it full debut on next generation after Ground Zeroes brief cameo last year. Placing you in the role of Big Boss, the stealth series makes a

triumphant return to the gaming world. Giving you the option of playing with a classic control mode or a shooter mode designed for players of Call of Duty and Battlefield, it certainly caters to the general public. The emphasis on the gameplay is stealth as always. It’s no good to go in all guns blazing as you will likely end up not getting past the first level. The games graphics are probably the best available today. Hollywood star Kiefer Sutherland brings something special to the role of Big Boss and is more than an adequate replacement for series stalwart David Hayter. The introduction of classic characters from previous games gives it a very good feeling of Nostalgia. Stan’s rating: 10/10

Mad Max – PS4, XB1

The long time film franchise make it’s long awaited introduction into the world of games. Warner Brothers do a fine job utilising its experiences with Batman: Arkham Knight and Shadow of Mordor to create a nice blend of combat and driving set in it a post apocalyptic world. The open world sandbox setting is a smart move by WB to give the player a lot to do. The ability to upgrade your weapons and car opens more story options. One key storyline is a quest for fuel, so you must manage the fuel in your vehicle wisely or you could end up stuck out in the sands among the ruins of ships and submarines. Overall it’s a very fun game with a lot of replay value. Stan’s rating 8.5/10

Preview of the month FIFA 16 – All Formats – Out 24th September EA sports yearly

instalment of their FIFA series makes it bow on 24th September. The addition of women’s national football teams after the success of the Women’s World Cup is a bold move by EA and one that’s been with a lot of kudos. The career mode has been revamped with the ability to play preseason tournaments allowing you to develop the team and find out your best first team 11 before the season starts. Prize money from the tournaments will be added to your transfer budgets as well. The hugely popular Ultimate team has been tweaked to focus more on building the team chemistry. With Pro Evolution Soccer upping it’s game this year, it still remains to be seen if they can topple EA’s long time franchise king. I think FIFA will still be the better of two but maybe Pro Evolution Soccer can pull of a giantkilling of their own. Excitement meter: 10/10

Like many local people I love this time of the year here. Harvest festivals and local food festivals are great opportunities to reflect on the abundance of great local food we grow and make here. They are also a great opportunity to thank our farmers, fishermen and local food producers for all they do to provide us with such a magnificent choice of high quality and delicious food. Food and drinks manufacturing in Cornwall has been growing over the last ten years it has been estimated that a third of all jobs in Cornwall are now involved with our growing food and drinks related industries. Not surprisingly, our Local Enterprise Partnership, working with local businesses have recognised this vibrant sector as an important sector to support. Over the next five years, Cornwall is receiving hundreds of millions of pounds of tax payer’s money to support businesses to grow here. There is a lot of information about the supporter for all types of businesses on the Cornwall & Isles of Scilly website. Farmers around Falmouth & Penryn not only playing a vital role in our local economy but also a vital role in our natural environment too. I am really pleased that financial support is available to them to support them in this vitally important role. A good example are the Countryside Stewardship grants that will help pay for thousands of individual agreements across the country with a special focus on four priorities: Wildlife and nature: restoring habitats, providing food and nesting places for birds, insects and other animals, creating areas for rare flowering plants and managing hedges. Pollinators: providing pollen and nectar sources and nesting places and ensuring the right resources for wild pollinators where they are most needed. Woodland: funding the creation of new woodland and supporting the management of existing woodlands. Water/flooding: making water cleaner and reducing risk of flooding by encouraging changes to farming practice (such as crop management), improving farm infrastructure and establishing woodland. This scheme is just one part within the wider Rural Development Programme, set to benefit many different aspects of rural life. Not only improving the environment, RDPE will also help make UK food and farming the best in the world, protect against animal and plant disease, create jobs and grow the rural economy in a wide range of ways from helping with access to Superfast broadband and supporting renewable energy. Investing at least £3.5 billion into our rural economies

by 2020, the Programme will continue to be rolled out throughout the next year. Over the next few months, I will be working hard with our inspiring local food producers and even more inspiring Ruth Huxley from Cornwall Food and Drink to make sure we are making the most of the new Great British Food Unit that will help trademark and promote local foods around the world and back British food at home, by guaranteeing that all central government departments purchase food to British standards of production by the end of the Parliament. We will also help consumers to buy British by pushing for country of origin labelling in Europe, particularly for dairy products. As the evening are beginning to draw in, I have been enjoying watching the Great British Bake-off and as it looks at Victorian cooking, I am planning on having a go to try and recreate recipes from this iconic era at home by drawing on uniquely British ingredients which have been awarded protected food name status. From Yorkshire Rhubarb to Fenland Celery, Traditional Bramley Apple Pie Filling to Jersey Royals, many of the 64 UK protected food names were popularised by the Victorians. Traditional pastry dishes such as Melton Mowbray Pork Pies and our own very special Cornish Pasties were a staple of the Victorian diet for many. This summer Traditional Bramley Apple Pie Filling became the latest UK product to be recognised under the EU scheme. I am working locally with a number of food producers to make sure they can benefit from the advantages of this scheme. Businesses awarded with Protected Food Name status have reported a boost in sales, helping power local economies, increase employment and drive up tourism. These are estimated to have already contributed more than £900 million to the European economy. We can all do our bit to support our local farmers, fishermen and food and drink manufacturers by buying their products. Not only will this help our local economy but will reduce air pollution and reduce carbon emissions too.
