That’s the equivalent of 9 average size cars.

The members who attend the 3 groups at the Athenaeum Club every week, follow Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan created by the organisation’s team of expert nutritionists, which encourages them to fill up on satisfying foods such as pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish, pulses and fruit and veg. Pauline Chappell who runs the groups says” Filling up on lots of satisfying foods means that you are never hungry so it doesn’t feel like a diet. Many people think that weight loss is about counting calories, but its actually about making healthier choices about food and becoming a bit more active “ “Reaching this milestone as a group just proves the huge change that we’ve all made to our lives, some people who have lost big amounts of weight have probably even saved their lives. Its brilliant to celebrate together. Every week we support and encourage each other and share tips and recipes, and on top of that we have a lot of fun. One such member is Norman Burnett who has lost a staggering 9.5 stones says, “ I was killing myself because my weight was dangerously high and after having a heart attack I joined the Wednesday morning group. I still enjoyed my favourite roast dinners and curries whilst losing weight and in my first year I lost 8 stones. The health improvements have now meant that my diabetes is much improved, my blood pressure is normal and I am much more mobile as a result. In fact my weight loss and Slimming World has saved my life, and

more importantly I have maintained my weight loss as a target member for over a year.” Pauline says, “I’m delighted that my members have lost weight so beautifully. It has made a huge difference to their lives and to their families and all of them are happier and healthier now. Everyone is sure of a warm welcome each week and never has to be hungry again. I can promise that if people in Falmouth love food, they will love Slimming World approach.

REGAINING THE BODY BEAUTIFUL….

Reading this in January, I trust that like me, you’re making efforts – if only mentally! – to get over any undue excesses of the Christmas period. People always joke that health clubs get you to join in January when the memory of your New Year’s “get fit” resolution is fresh in your mind and you’re still in earnest about keeping that resolution. Well, your pet may need the same sort of attention, and it could help you: exercising them exercises you too!

An overweight pet is far more likely to have long term health problems, just like us. If you think your pet is a little more “cuddly” than usual the first thing you should do is call your vet to give them a thorough examination to check for medical conditions that may be causing the weight gain. In the majority of cases where there has been an increase in their weight there are usually no underlying medical causes – it’s just good living. So, if this really is the problem you should ask your vet about weight clinics. Most surgeries run them and they are often organised by the nurses for relatively little cost. These clinics will be able to advise you on diets and will be able to help and support you in monitoring and managing your pet’s weight.

DOGS.This is really a book in itself, suffice to say at least one daily walk is the best idea; it benefits both pet and owner. In essence your dog’s weight reflects the balance between daily intake of calories versus calories burnt by exercise. The more you exercise the more you can eat,

or the way I look at it, an hour in the gym buys 2 glasses of claret!

later life obese cats develop diabetes (as we can), with all the hassles and

Photo: ‘Beagle’ Wiki Commons, courtesy Jonasz

Of course you have to be careful if your pet has a clinical condition which might make it difficult to exercise them too much – e.g. arthritis or a cardiac condition – but then limitations like that make it even more crucial that you should keep an eye on their weight, or let the vet nurses do it for you.

CATS. Cats are natural hunters and many cats are only seen once or twice a day by their owners, as the rest of the time they are out and about, although it’s quite possible they are asleep outdoors somewhere. If they are active young cats then they are probably getting enough exercise by just being an outdoor cat. But indoor cats are a different matter. The cat that loves nothing more than to sit on the chair or windowsill all day watching the world go by is far more likely to suffer from increased weight gain. And it is a very real problem that in

costs involved in treating and monitoring the condition.

The simple answer is to indulge in regular play. Cats are naturally curious animals and small fastmoving objects will cause the innate chase response right from when they are kittens. Most mature cats will continue to show it, particularly when they have practised it all their lives. Try rolling small balls such as one of those practice golf balls which have holes in, or even easier, a scrunched up piece of paper tied to piece of string and pulled erratically will get their interest. Ping-pong balls are equally good! Furry, feathery or flapping things are particularly attractive to cats, but with kittens especially, although you should replace such toys as they start to get damaged in case parts get swallowed. Patches of bright light, such as the reflection from a watch face or mirror, often get cats chasing,

and laser lights are really good fun, both for the owner and the cat!

RABBITS. Rabbits can be good pets and nowadays are the third most widely kept small animal. However, many people continue to keep their pet in a small hutch, perhaps sited at the bottom of the garden, and maybe just a bit isolated. Such rabbits can live rather a miserable existence in cramped and uncomfortable conditions, with no area provided for exercise, so inadequate housing like this is one of the main reasons for ill health in rabbits. Rabbits need to be outside for a while every day. They need sunlight to produce vitamin D. Whatever the size of the hutch, rabbits need exercise and the safest way to achieve this is by using a run. However, the run must be escapeand predator-proof and provide shelter. The run should be moved daily so that the rabbit has fresh grass to nibble. Make sure that the grass has not been treated with weed-killer or any other harmful substance. The run should only be used for day time exercise and the rabbit placed back into its hutch at night. Ensure that other pets are not able to frighten the rabbit – this is particularly the case when you have a cat, as cats appear to love to use runs as a resting place and are greatly entertained by the stress of the occupant!

In summary therefore, the benefits of pet ownership have been known for a long time so let’s look after them as well!

I have been writing this article and diary for a year now and I hope you have found it helpful and informative. A new feature this year will be Plant of the Month to give an idea of something that might be of interest in that month. At the nursery we are looking forward to another busy year with lots more home grown stock being available at sensible prices. We are a local family run business and your support is always appreciated

Diary for January

• Prune roses whilst they are dormant. Remove any crossing or dead branches then prune back the stems (normally by one third to a half) to an outward facing bud. Slope the cut away from the bud and no more than 6-8mm above the bud. • If the garden is looking a bit bare, try adding some winter colour such as Winter Jasmine or Sarcococca confusa • Clear away any old stems of perennials. • Apple and Pear trees can now be pruned. This should be done when the trees are dormant. Don’t prune Cherries, Plums, Peach and Apricots until summer. • Now is also a good time to prune blackcurrants, gooseberries and redcurrants. • Winter is the time for planting bare root fruit trees and bushes, bare root ornamental trees and hedging • Keep a regular check on any stored fruit.

Discard any bad ones straight away • Think about planning your veggie plot making sure the crops are rotated so the same crops are not grown in the same place as last year. Ordering new seed • For early peas, place a cloche over the growing area now. This will give the soil chance to warm up over the next few weeks

Plant of the month

Sarcococca confusa (sweet box)

A bushy evergreen shrub which can grow to about 2metres. Glossy deep green leaves 3-5cm in length and in winter small creamy white very sweetly scented flowers followed by glossy black berries which can stay on the plant until the following winter. To fully appreciate the beautiful scent Sarcococca confusa is best grown in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade, close to a path or entrance. Any moist but well-drained soil and is hardy.

Many local people have asked me about my predictions for the New Year. While it remains the case that as a community we face many challenges, I am hopeful about the year ahead in Falmouth and Penryn. Why? Because there are so many great people here who work hard with ambition, unity and perseverance to improve our community for everyone.

Safety is paramount to all our customers; a legal tyre also has the potential to be a lethal tyre!

conditions. In terms of braking distance this represents an extra 8 metres (25ft). In one test, where a new tyre with a tread depth of 8mm was compared to one with only 1.6mm the braking distance increased by 13 metres (42.25ft) – the equivalent to double the length of a typical living room. On the back of this research, the road safety organisation Roadsafe has launched a campaign to educate motorists on tyre safety and encourage more frequent tyre replacement.

Independent research performed by the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) has provided convincing new evidence that worn tyres significantly increase the chances of having an accident on wet roads by increasing the braking distance.

For an expert and professional service every time pop along to Xpress Garage to have your tyres checked.

The test results showed that significant increases in braking distance began to appear when the tyre was worn down to 3mm. Although the legal minimum UK tread depth is only 1.6mm, this new research showed that tyres with a 3mm tread had a 25% better performance than those at 1.6mm in wet
