E H T L L E M S D N A P 'STO a r fo s p ti p to y M ' S ROSE healthier wellbeing

WELLBEING is the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy. My Core Fitness and Wellbeing Centre is a place of whole body, whole being wellness. Yes we love teaching fitness, yet we are SO MUCH MORE... It saddens me that I deal with so many people in Cornwall who are stressed, anxious, have stress related illnesses and it encourages me as there are very simple ways to start reducing stress and improving WELLBEING. This year as you know has been extremely stressful for me.As the year comes towards to a close so many wonderful things are happening to me, my family and My Core people, including National Awards,TV appearances and the completion of The NEW Core. I am humbled by the experiences in my work and grateful for the life I have. I am thankful for the journey I have chosen and blessed by the wonderful people in my life. Sometimes health comes at a cost and I have developed programs to help us all reduce stress in our lives. As we lead up to Christmas Carnage try using my top tips to keep us all on track and a little calmer. STRESS is a major contributor to health morbidities. I want to share my top tips with you as I believe we deserve a healthier Falmouth. You might just SURPRISE yourself! TOP TIPS FOR WELLBEING

just surprise yourself and others! 2 - STRESS LESS Easy to say I know, often there are factors in our lives that we have the power to change. Start by learning to say NO.Try to pace your days and not overdo it, especially this time of year ramping up into Christmas.A technique of squeezing and putting tension into the body and then letting it become slack and relaxed actually de-stresses your body.Try it! Take note of point 1 as it will also add to stress reduction. 3 - MOVE

I don't care how you move - just move.Walk a little more, stretch (stretching helps with breathing and de-stressing! BOOM!) Consider a Well-Being Class like Body Balance, Pilates or Yoga! Get outdoors and enjoy the scenery. If you fear moving because of illness, injury or stiffness then come and see me - I can give you confidence to move better. 4 - SMILE

1- BREATHE My Mum says (often) "stop and smell the roses", I hear my "oldies" in my balance and stability classes tell me "life is a blink of an eye".The reality is we live in a fast society and our home is in one the most beautiful places in the world (in my opinion!) STOP! Take it in. Breathe and enjoy the moment in time. Hear your breath, listen to the timing of your breathing as this will relax your

Have a conversation with your family, look them in the eyes. Beside the fact that looking into your smart phones is terrible for 3 x meals a day and preferably without salt or processed. Blah, Blah, posture, sometimes we need to take in our surroundings and simply Blah.Actually it IS a challenge to connect! make small tweaks to the way we eat.WE don't know the right thing 8 - SLEEP WELL to do anymore. New Lunch Menu at Amanzi Carolyn and Ian Turton at Amanzi have had a great year so far despite the storms at the beginning. The summer weather then made up for this, running right into October keeping everyone in a celebratory mood! During the year Carolyn and Ian came up with a new lunch menu featuring many firm favourites including boerewors (farmers sausage) rolls, boerie burgers and Cape Malay fish. However, what has proved the most popular has been the African tapas, if you can’t make up your mind on what to eat, you can choose a bunch of delights to sample Africa with your friends or colleagues. “A most enjoyable lunch” Reviewed Trip advisor August 2014

“My partner and I, called in for lunch yesterday. One of the best burgers I have ever eaten. My partner had the fish and chips, the fish being cooked with an African mildly spiced twist. It was delicious and would go for that next time. Fresh, moist well cooked and presented. I highly recommend Amanzi if you are in the area.”

'and enjoy the festive season with confidence'

Patient Comments I am thrilled with the result! You have given me my confidence back and I feel much better about myself

AS WE ENTER the month of November a lot of us will begin to turn out attention to Christmas. Sending cards, buying presents and planning a beautiful Christmas meal with our family.Turkey with all the trimmings, crispy roast potatoes, chestnut stuffing, carrots, sprouts and honey roasted parsnips. Sounds delicious doesn’t it? Unfortunately, however, there will be many people who won’t be able to enjoy a Christmas lunch like this. For those who have no teeth or have loose fitting dentures their festive meals will be a struggle, unable to chew their food which can often result in heartburn or indigestion. Research also reveals that many of these people will lack self-confidence and avoid everyday activities such as eating out in a public, being intimate and going out with family and friends. They are also often reluctant to seek professional advice because of the stigma associated with dentures and the fear of having an oral examination. Existing denture wearers may wonder why they may need to change their dentures. Dentures are custom made to fit your mouth and should not require fixative. However, over time, the mouth changes shape and the dentures may become loose and not fit well.A poorly fitting denture causes irritation and sores therefore leading to considerable discomfort or even for it to break. The British Dental Health

foundation advices that replacing lost or missing teeth is very good for your health and appearance. Dentures replace your lost teeth and give support to your cheeks and lips. Without this support, sagging facial muscles can make a person look older and they will find it hard to eat and speak properly. A Free one hour consultation at the discreet, private denture clinic of Martin Docking Dip CDT RCS (Eng), will give you the opportunity to consider your options with no obligation. The clinic set in the outskirts of St Agnes in a countryside location, has ample parking and a warm and relaxed greeting to all visitors. This consultation is completely free and Martin’s role is primarily to put your mind at ease and show you how a denture can be made to give you a natural looking appearance. If you do decide to take up the option of a denture, Martin will carefully go through the entire treatment plan, explaining each stage of the pain free procedure very carefully. You will always be seen by Martin he will make the fittings and ultimately create the denture that returns your confidence and your smile. SIOBHAN BARSBY Her achievement At the age of 29 walking to the top of the stairs should

be easy right? Not for me, my knees hurt and crunched, I was short of breath and my feet hurt. That’s it I thought, I couldn’t bury my head in the sand any longer, I had to sort myself out especially as I had a very young child to look after as well. I am however very lucky that I have a fantastic husband who tells me I am beautiful no matter what my weight, but realistically that didn’t help. Bravely I took the step to go to Slimming World on my own. The group on Wednesday morning and consultant Pauline Chappell were so welcoming, friendly, there was no humiliation and I felt really comfortable. Following the Slimming World plan is easy, with so many choices available, I don’t think I have ever eaten as much in my life and then to see the weight coming off week by week is amazing. My first week I lost 7lbs and then an average of 2 -3 lbs every week since, and here I am 4 stone 8lbs lighter and almost at my target weight.Along the way I have still enjoyed holidays and night s out. As I started loosing weight I started exercise classes as well and took up Kettlecise and Zumba which have really helped my fitness and I have toned up.The confidence I have gained has spurred me on to train as a Zumba Instructor and now I co – teach a zumba class. Slimming World is now a way of life for me, it is NOT a diet, it is healthy living and it works! The whole family have enjoyed the food because it is suitable for everyone. My 2 year old loves the chips, pasta dishes and even curry. My husband loves everything and he too has lost over 3 stones as well. If like me you have tried every faddy diet under the sun hoping for a quick result STOP NOW and do something that really works

and eat your self slim. The groups are fun and full of help and encouragement from everyone there. I love my group , and I was voted Woman of the Year by all the members in September. My future is looking lighter, brighter and longer thanks to Slimming World it has literally changed my life and I can be proud of how I look and feel, so what are you waiting for ? What have you got to lose, join now.

Christmas Chutney

Cooking time Takes about 2½ hours Skill level Moderately easy Servings Makes about 2.5kg/6lb A perfect match for cheese and cold meats, and delicious in turkey sandwiches Ingredients 900g tomatoes 3 red peppers, 1 large aubergine and 1 green pepper (total weight of about 900g/2lb) 700g onions, peeled and fairly finely chopped, by hand or in a food processor 4 fat cloves garlic, crushed 350g granulated sugar 300ml/½pint white wine vinegar or distilled malt vinegar 1 tbsp salt 1 tbsp coriander seeds, crushed 1 tbsp paprika 2 tsp cayenne pepper

Method 1. Peel the tomatoes - prick them with a sharp knife, place in a bowl and cover with boiling water. Leave for a few seconds then drain and cover with cold water. The skins will now come away easily. 2. Chop the tomatoes and aubergine and seed and chop the peppers. Put in a large heavy-based pan with the onions and garlic and bring to the boil. Cover with a lid,

lower the heat and gently simmer for about one hour, stirring occasionally, until tender. 3. Tip the sugar, vinegar, salt, coriander, paprika and cayenne into the pan and bring to the boil over a medium heat, stirring, until the sugar has dissolved. Continue to boil for 30 minutes or so, until the mixture achieves a chunky chutney consistency and the surplus watery liquid has evaporated.Take care towards the end of the cooking time to continue stirring so that the chutney doesn't catch on the bottom of the pan. 4. Ladle the chutney into sterilised or dishwasher-clean jars (Kilner jars are ideal) and top with paper jam covers. Seal the jars while still hot. Leave to mature for at least a month in a cool dark place.

TMB PHD MRCVS PAUL COCKERHAM MA VE all animal and large animal

in both sm Has more than 30 years’ experienceof Rosemullion Veterinary Practice Ltd veterinary practice and is a director POISONING CASES!! I don’t know whether it’s me, and I’ve been unfortunate recently in seeing more than my fair share of cases of poisonings, but these seem for some reason to be on the increase. It may just be that the pet-owning public are far more likely than ever before to look something up on Google – and then what they find scares the living daylights out of them – so they quickly ring us up for advice! Anyway, I thought it would be topical in this issue to cover a few things ‘out there’ which are well known as being potentially toxic to dogs, and maybe a few which you’d never appreciated as may cause harm. ONIONS Hot dogs and burgers are often on sale at events in the autumn but the onions which go with them are potentially toxic to dogs. In fact all vegetables like this – onions, spring onions, leeks, garlic and chives – and it doesn’t matter if they are cooked or raw (and let’s face it, your average Labrador isn’t that bothered either way) contain a chemical which causes anemia by destroying large numbers of red blood cells. So, along with the vomiting and diarrhea you get the signs of anaemia as well: depression, weakness, pale membranes and rapid shallow breathing. Treatment is generally to support the body systems while the anaemia improves: fluids via a drip line, and activated charcoal into the guts to mop up any remaining irritant chemicals. The trouble with diagnosing and treating this condition is that the

raisins and grapes produce these effects isn’t known, so again, intensive supportive treatment with fluids is the only option sometimes.

signs only come on several days after the onions were eaten, so it’s not always easy to make the connection. GRAPES / RAISINS ETC There is a pretty high public awareness of the poisonous effects of these on dogs, again whether cooked in fruit cakes, or raw, as in a bag of raisins that a Labrador just happens to have found in a kitchen cupboard… The signs of abdominal discomfort / colic are seen pretty quickly, and in dogs that are brought to us promptly we can easily make them vomit and bring up all the fruit. Using a drug called ‘apomorphine’ which has a spectacular vomiting effect on dogs, once this has kicked in pretty much everything the dog has eaten over the past hour reappears, and so it is stopped from being absorbed by the gut. Not particularly pleasant for the dog admittedly, but much better than suffering the effects of raisin poisoning – acute gastro-enteritis, followed by the strong possibility of kidney failure. The way in which

CHOCOLATE This is a well known risk, and we see many cases of this throughout the year, particularly at Christmas, for obvious reasons! Prising the lid off a tin of Quality Street, for instance, is the work of an idle moment for some dogs, and they’re not over fussy about whether there are soft centres, nuts or toffees, the lot gets eaten, wrappers and all! Again, fortunately, owners are primed to act if and when this happens, and one of the first things we do is to use apomorphine to make the contents of the tin reappear – though rather less than palatable than the first time round! The worst cases of poisoning involve eating either milk or plain chocolate, particularly whole bars of the stuff, as these contain the greatest amounts of cocoa powder. And it’s that which causes the theobromine poisoning – the substance in the cocoa that dogs can’t handle – resulting in an absolutely massive overstimulation of the heart,

together with seizures and kidney problems. Of course those dogs which are really out to cause themselves problems pick chocolate raisins as the food of choice – a doubly toxic whammy! UNUSUAL POISONINGS Firework – dogs will sometimes eat spent fireworks, which still contain some sodium chlorate, and that can cause irritation to the guts Light sticks / luminous necklaces – dogs will sometimes bite into these if they are discarded on the floor and absorb the chemicals which produce the light. Nothing much to worry about generally, though again there is colicky discomfort and lots of drooling. Mushrooms – beware these, as the same effects occur in dogs as can in people. That applies to the magic variety as well! Antifreeze – now is the season when people drain their car radiators and refill with antifreeze solution. Dogs find this quite sweet and will happily drink the stuff, even when it’s diluted with water. Fortunately, this is one poison where there is a definite antidote: intravenous alcohol!! The best advice is that if ever you are in any doubt about whether your dog has eaten something potentially poisonous, ring the surgery pronto – remember, we have one of our own nurses answering the phone 24/7, you’re not put through to some out-of-hours answering service.

Winter Motoring

CHECKLIST

Prepare for the worst and hope for the best Two out of the last three winters have seen widespread snow and ice for weeks on end with temperatures regularly falling below -10°C. You’re more likely to break down in a bad winter – Emergency breakdown services had its busiest day on Monday, January 4, 2010, and then again, less than 12 months later, on Monday, December 20, 2010 when patrols handled more than 28,000 breakdowns. There’s more risk of delays too but not necessarily in the way you’d expect. If vehicles ahead lose control – a jack-knifed lorry for example – you won’t be able to get through no matter how well-equipped your car is with winter tyres or chains. You could face a wait of several hours until the blockage and other traffic ahead has been cleared. Here’s what you need to do this winter to reduce the risk of a breakdown and make sure that you are equipped to deal with the conditions.

Xpress Garage can check your car for you...

If your battery looks like this it’s time to get it checked

Antifreeze – check coolant level regularly and, if required, top-up with a mixture of the correct type of antifreeze. Your garage should check concentration to ensure adequate cold temperature protection. Battery – the most common cause of winter breakdowns. A battery more than five years old may struggle in the cold - get it checked and replaced if necessary to avoid the inconvenience of an unplanned failure. Xpress offers a comprehensive computerised battery check with print out. Fuel – keep at least a quarter of a tank in case of unexpected delay. Lights – check and clean all lights regularly to make sure you can see and be seen clearly. Carry spare bulbs. Tyres – should have at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring. Consider winter tyres for improved safety.

Check pressures at least every fortnight. Windscreen – reduce dazzle from the low sun by keeping the screen clean inside and out. Now is a good time to renew worn wiper blades. Screen wash – use a 50% mix of a good quality screen wash to reduce the chance of freezing in frosty weather. Locks and door seals – stop doors freezing shut with a thin coat of polish or Vaseline on rubber door seals. A squirt of water dispersant (wD-40) in locks will help stop them freezing.

You and your passengers

Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. As well as the things you should be carrying on every journey regardless of the weather, you should make up a winter emergency kit to keep in the boot – hopefully you won’t need it but you will be very glad it’s there if you do. Year-round essentials: • Fully-charged mobile phone and in-car charger • Sunglasses – to deal with glare from the sun or snow • Personal medication • warning triangle • Spare bulbs • First aid kit
