e h t h it w e v lo in ll a 2015… F u o y g in lp e h is t a th s s e c o r p towards your goal… Helen Tite lly The results will come natura

Do you ever have one of those days where you sit down and think,“I haven’t got ANYTHING done today!” and feel like you’ve wasted a day? I do. On those days, time flies to the point where I can’t keep up.

from the truth!

Our wonderful Members were celebrated with The Core’s first Annual Member Achievement Awards in December and I was surprised on the night by a fantastic Video that How does that happen?! The one of the Members had taken length of a second, of a minute, the time and trouble to create of an hour never changes, just that took us back through the what we feel able to complete whole of 2014 month by within that time. So when I month. look around me and see my daughters growing up from Being reminded of all the girls to young women, see my fantastic memories and young staff go off and get achievements was not just married and have children of incredible and emotional, it their own it suddenly hits me made me feel proud about that with every year that what our Members and the passes, time seems to pass Core HAD achieved instead of more quickly. feeling frustrated about not having my hoped-for year of It’s been a funny old year. I consolidation. recall myself saying at the start of 2014 that this year would 2014 was a stressful year yet be one of consolidation and with reflection I see now that steady growth. Boy, that sometimes when things feel couldn’t have been further

like they are falling apart they may actually be falling into place. It’s great to have a Goal and to have a plan in place to help you achieve it. If that plan helps you see that every day you get a little better than the day before then it all adds up. Success isn’t usually achieved overnight. When someone joins The Core for the first time they will be asked to complete a Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire. One of the questions on this form is “What are your specific health and fitness goals?” What I often witness with people starting a health and fitness journey is that they are so fixated on the end result, often expecting a quick fix, that they see the time and effort they will need to put in as inconvenient or not worth it.And they give up. This is not the best way to reach a goal, especially if plans need to be changed, or life gets in the way.You need to fall in love with the process that is helping you towards your goal and the results will come naturally. This is why we try to put so much effort into creating a Core community so that you enjoy coming to the gym or classes and you fall in love with the process involving the other Members, the

Instructors and the whole Core vibe. I don’t think we have a single Member who has started their journey, maybe with a plan, usually with a Goal, but not had to make a change to that plan along the way, or even had their plans changed beyond their control. Time isn’t going to wait.We have to decide what we are going to do with the time that is given to us and only look backwards to see how far we’ve come. No day is ever a wasted day. If you’ve been derailed or given up, look back now in order to move forwards. If you’re ready to spend some time on feeling healthier, eating better, improving your fitness and making friends along the way then this may be the year to begin the process. We’re ready and we’re waiting. Welcome to The Core.

New Year, New Career! The Wave’s ‘How to win at the New Year jobs rush’

It’s 1:07am on New Year’s Day; the champagne’s been drunk, the party poppers have been popped and it’s time for that inevitable question: what are your New Year’s resolutions? According to a YouGov poll, ‘pursuing a career ambition’, as they put it, was on 22 per cent of the population’s list for 2014 and is bound to be on many lists for the coming year. This ‘ambition’ causes what some call the New Year jobs rush:

employers and employees full of good intentions. What’s more, as January is associated with fresh starts and clean slates, it’s also a popular time for people to consider a brand new career and take a bit of a leap.

Make a plan of action

To get the most out of this buoyant environment, it’s crucial to prepare in advance and make a plan of action. This plan should include taking time to really work out which roles you are interested in and which

getting that new job is to network. Doing this in advance of your actual job search is an exceptionally effective step. This doesn’t mean schmoozing with employers at Chamber of Commerce breakfast meetings, though by all means, do. Rather, you can network via social media, contributing to groups and forums, asking questions and tweeting about industry-specific news. Participate in discussions, comment on posts and listen to web casts. You may make some valuable connections along the way. All of this will increase your personal brand and get your name out there before everyone else jumps on the bandwagon; differentiating you from the rest.

Set yourself apart

where thousands upon thousands of people start hunting for a new role. With such competition, you need to make your application pretty special if you want to get noticed by your dream employer. Here’s how to win at the New Year jobs rush:

Understand what’s going on

January is always a busy time in the employment market. Lots of big companies receive their new annual budget and can therefore afford to hire again, creating new positions. Others might take the opportunity to launch an expansion scheme. Either way, there are likely to be more roles on offer. That’s in addition to the roles vacated by those moving on. It’s a long, exciting cycle with both

companies you would want to work for. It should also cover revising your CV and cover letter, updating your LinkedIn profile and checking your personal social media profiles are ‘safe’ or set to private (to prevent any untoward content appearing in recruiters’ searches – especially around Christmas party time). Next on the plan should be registering with some recruitment agencies. Working alongside an agency will give your job search a real boost; often they receive news of vacancies before the usual jobs boards, propelling you to the head of the application queue.

Start networking now One of the best tips for increasing your chances of

Naturally, you won’t be the only person searching for a new opportunity at this time of year, thus you need to take the right approach to ensure your CV is placed on the ‘next stage’ pile and not the ‘rejection’ one. The above will help, as will tailoring your CV specifically to the role in hand. Never, ever just send your CV to any hiring company in a 20 mile radius in a blanket approach. Go through the job advertisement and/or person specification and include examples that relate to the skills and experience required. You need to provide evidence that you are not just a match, but a better match than everyone else. A CV is fairly restrictive, of course and you can’t (and

shouldn’t) fit every single individual interesting fact about yourself on it. That’s what LinkedIn is for. Recruiters will check out your LinkedIn profile, chiefly for additional information. As such, it should not be a carbon copy of your CV but it can detail extra courses you’ve completed, other less-relevant achievements and extracurricular activities. If you don’t have one, then create one urgently.

Have the right attitude

We all know that New Year’s good intentions can fade – how many of us have joined the gym only to stop going in February? To ensure your ‘career ambitions’ don’t go the same way, you need to have the right attitude. Searching for a job can be a lengthy and disheartening process, so you need to be realistic, positive and develop a thick skin. There will be times when you don’t hear back, there will be times when you don’t get shortlisted and there will be times when you are pipped to the post. However, if you can accept all of this and learn from it, you’ll being able to get back on that proverbial horse and keep going. If you have the right attitude, these one or two disappointments shouldn’t discourage you for long. That’s it – The Wave’s how to win at the New Year jobs rush. Follow these tips and you could be with your new employer by mid-February. Good luck

and happy New Year!

Cornish Garden Nurseries is a family run business situated on the A39 between Truro and Falmouth at Perranarworthal.

We took over the nursery in March 2014 and have spent the last nine months bringing it back from a state of complete neglect, to a true plant nursery that we can be proud of. We have been propagating, taking cuttings and bringing our own plants as our aim is to sell good quality plants at a sensible price. We hold an extensive range of stock including trees, hedging, shrubs and perennial plants which are all available at the nursery or from our web site, a great selection of bare root traditional hedging whips as well as a wide range of pot grown hedging in a range of sizes, a range of bare root fruit trees including a big proportion of Cornish and South West varieties. With our landscaping and garden maintenance team we can offer services ranging from mowing the lawn right through to full landscaping and re-modelling of your garden.

Diary for January

1. Plant new fruit trees and bushes now. They are best planted in a frost free period, bare root and whilst the plant is still dormant. 2.Think about getting your apple and pear trees, blackcurrants, gooseberries and redcurrants pruned if you haven’t already done so.This job really should be done in the winter when the plants are dormant. 3. Do not prune plums, cherries and apricots until the summer. If these trees are pruned in the winter they can become susceptible to silver leaf infections. 4. Raspberry canes can be planted. They need a sunny, well drained spot. 5. Hedging and trees should be planted now.As with the fruit trees, plant in a frost free period, bare root or pot grown and whilst the plant is still

dormant 6. Prune Wisteria, cut back summer side shoots to 2or 3 buds 7. Cut back foliage on ornamental grasses before they start growing. Cut them down to within a couple of centimetres of the ground. 8. Cut down old stems of perennial plants being careful of any new growth 9.Try to avoid walking on the lawn if there is a frost, or more unlikely in Cornwall snow, because it can damage the grass beneath 10. Start planning your veggie plot for the coming year and order your seeds. Don’t forget to rotate the positions of your crops. Make sure that all your garden tools have been cleaned and are ready for the new season ahead and think about getting garden machinery serviced if you haven’t done so already.

JAson Ling Tattoo Artist

set to hit the States in 2015

In the December edition of Wave you met Jason Ling, award winning tattooist who has recently opened up

Ship to Shore Tattoo Studio in Falmouth. 2015 is set to be a very busy year for this talented artist. Having previously worked in Miami for three months Jason heads back there in 2015 for the Miami Convention together with stopping on the way in New York for an invitation only event in Times Square. Here at the Wave we love to get to the bottom of what makes our local businessmen tick! So by popular demand here is the Wave style Q & A to get to know Jason a little better! What did you want to be when you were younger? Astronaut or a cowboy

What drives you to succeed?

Being able to put a roof over my head

What are your best qualities? I’m very generous

What are your worse qualities? Moody!

What’s your favourite decade and why?

The 90’s, I was still in my twenty’s and the music was better

Who is your celebrity crush?

Scarlet Johansson and Kelly Brook

Which three people would you invite to your ideal dinner party, dead or alive?

My dad, Ayrton Senna and Roy Chubby Brown, good old fashion comedy, he says what we’re all thinking, no skating around the edges!

What’s the most dangerous thing you’ve ever done? I use to race bikes

What chore do you absolutely hate doing? Painting and decorating

Who is the sexiest woman on earth?

Better answer this one carefully! If I was really smart and cute I would say my girlfriend, but no one wants cute, I’m a tattooist I can’t be cute! This is tough; I can’t think of one, mmmmmm I’ve got one, Salma Hayek, a proper good woman with curves, not some stick insect….. Moving swiftly on

What was the last movie, TV show or sporting event that made you cry?

Click, with Adam Sandler. It was at the end when he was fat and had lost all life; he had just waited his life because he was just too impatient. Am I the only one that has cried at this?

If you had a genie in a lamp and they could grant you three wishes what would they be?

A cure for Cancer, the government starting spending their money looking after their own people and stop spending it on everyone else’s problems, an finally I would love a proper coffee machine like in Café Nero, a real big flashy coffee machine installed in my studio with a Barista to serve my coffee on tap all day, I love my coffee! So basically no one will be dying of cancer, no one would be homeless

Who do you look up to most in your life?

Lewis Hamilton, because I started off in karting when I was younger and Lewis Hamilton was 8 when I was karting, we use to be at the same track together. He gave up everything just to be there, his family gave every penny they had, and look where he is today!

What’s the most expensive thing you’ve ever bought and now regret buying? NOTHING! At the time it was a good idea

What’s your favourite car?

What’s your favourite thing to do on a day off?

Shop, I love shopping, I love going out clothes shopping, I love clothes!

And finally… what does 2015 hold for you?

Cycle yourself

fitter & healthier in 2015! There are many health

benefits that are associated with cycling. Let's look at a few of the major benefits:

Cycling is one of the easiest ways to exercise

You can ride a bicycle almost anywhere, at any time of the year, and without spending a fortune. Many people are put off doing certain sports because of the high level of skill that seems to be required, or perhaps because they can’t commit to a team sport due to time pressures. Most of us know how to cycle and once you have learned you don’t forget. All you need is a bike, a half an hour here or there when it suits, and a bit of confidence.

because people enjoy cycling and they wouldn’t really notice that they have gone further than the last time they went cycling.

Cycling improves cardio-vascular fitness

Cycling makes the heart pound in a steady manner and helps improve cardio-vascular fitness. Studies have shown that cycling to work will increase cardiovascular fitness by 3-7%. Cycling uses the largest muscle groups the legs, raising heart rate to benefit stamina and fitness.

Cycling eats up calories

Cycling is a good way to lose those unwanted pounds. Steady cycling burns approximately 300 calories per hour. If you cycle for 30 minutes every day you would burn 11 pounds of fat in a year. Since it helps build muscle, cycling will also boost your metabolic rate long after you’ve finished your ride. Cycling improves heart health According to the British Medical Association, cycling just 20 miles a week can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by 50%.A major study of 10,000 civil servants suggested that those who cycled 20 miles over the period of a week were half as likely to suffer

heart disease as their non-cycling colleagues.

Cycling improves coordination

Cycling is an activity that involves the whole body. Therefore, armto-leg, feet-to-hands and body-toeye coordination are improved.

Cycling reduces stress

Any regular exercise can reduce stress and depression and improve well being and self esteem. Cycling outdoors is also a good way to be one with nature and to feel the breath of the earth. It takes one’s mind out of everydaylife stress and rejuvenates his soul.

Cycling builds strength and muscle tone

Contrary to normal perceptions, cycling is not a fitness activity that solely involves the legs. Cycling builds strength in a holistic manner since every single part of the body is involved in cycling.

Cycling increases muscle tone

Cycling improves general muscle function gradually, with little risk of over exercise or strain. Regular cycling strengthens leg muscles and is great for the mobility of hip and knee joints. You will gradually begin to see an improvement in the muscle tone of your legs, thighs, rear end and hips.

Cycling builds stamina

Cycling is a good way to build stamina. It is very effective in doing so,

to the rescue! A1 Appliances have

been trading in Falmouth for the last Fifteen years. Starting initially in the old Indoor Market and now located in Kimberley Park Road opposite the top Park entrance. There has been a number of changes over the years but by far the biggest was when DAR closed their doors just over eighteen months ago. Chris, then owner of DAR and the rest of his team found employment with A1. Simon, the Director of A1 has been in the industry for over thirty years. Chris and his staff also have many years of experience in the appliance trade. Between them all they can pretty much meet with any demands for repair, spares and sales that you may have. A good range of the more popular new freestanding and built-in appliances are held in stock. Virtually anything else

can be supplied pretty promptly

as they have weekly regular deliveries from their suppliers. Where possible they also offer a range of refurbished, guaranteed appliances that have been professionally reworked and safety tested.

If you simply require belts, bags or bulbs, they are usually available from stock. For anyone wishing to carry out their own repairs, more specific parts are available to order, whilst many are held in stock. A workshop repair service is offered for smaller appliances but should you require a home visit, they offer a very rapid, inexpensive call-out service. To compliment this, they also offer a Pat Testing Service. With the recent addition of a new engineer and an expansion to their fleet, the service really is very efficient. What ever your appliance needs are you can be assured that you will receive a professional, courteous service and that their knowledge of white

goods really is second to none. In this day of the internet and the domination of the larger retailers, it is reassuring to know that old fashioned service is still available. So next time you need either a new appliance, a repair or simply a new bulb, visit A1, you will not be disappointed!

TMB PHD MRCVS PAUL COCKERHAM MA VE all animal and large animal

in both sm Has more than 30 years’ experienceof Rosemullion Veterinary Practice Ltd veterinary practice and is a director POST-CHRISTMAS BLUES – AND THE JOYS OF HOSPITALISATION! Presuming that everyone has enjoyed themselves, human, canine and feline – though cats always enjoy themselves as they are so much in control! – then it’s always timely to think about those pets who may not have had such a good ‘festive’ season. Many conditions that we come across in day-to-day general practice start off with an animal presented to us with only vague signs, ranging from:“He’s off his food and doesn’t want to go for a walk” (quite scary symptoms for a 3 year-old Labrador); to “She’s very dull and won’t eat her sausage treat” (equally serious – and illustrated, just to make sure you know what it is I’m talking about); to “I’m not sure that there’s anything wrong with him but to me he’s not quite right”.

Now I take my hat off to pet owners for the level of care and attention that they devote to their pets, and, from my point of view as a vet, your hugely gifted ability to spot signs of ill-health almost before they occur. So it is that we regularly see pets before us which are in the first stages of actually quite serious conditions, but because we see them early on, we are able to do something about them with a reasonable degree of success. Many of these “vague illnesses” are to do with the onset of metabolic conditions – which are situations where the body’s own

organs are starting not to work very well: the onset of kidney disease, liver failure, and diabetes, are among the most common that we encounter. Frequently dogs and cats like this are dehydrated, maybe anaemic, sometimes running high fevers, and while not generally in any pain as such, they’re just very poorly.Think ‘man-flu’ and then some – they can be that bad! One of the earliest things we can constructively do is to hospitalise cats and dogs presented like this, who are obviously feeling just rotten but are giving us little real clue as to why. And at Rosemullion Veterinary Hospital we are equipped to do just that – it’s in the name! The benefits are immense. Blood samples can be taken and analysed on the spot at any time of the day or night, giving us information as to how the kidneys / liver / pancreas might be functioning, how the blood cells are responding, and how your pet is coping with the disease / treatment. Are they anaemic – are there lots of white blood cells fighting off an infection – is there a lungworm problem – is the blood clotting properly? Yet chiefly, most of these cats and dogs will be dehydrated, which is a situation which quickly brings about its own problems. Any dehydrated animal will become quite depressed and tired, and therefore not want to eat.We can assess the state of dehydration by interpreting the information from blood samples and use intravenous drips to slowly but surely reverse this slide into what might be a

terminal state. This isn’t something that can be rushed – fluids have to be carefully controlled and regularly monitored with simple blood tests – and cats and dogs are often resident with us in the Falmouth Veterinary Hospital for several days whilst slowly starting to improve. Also in Falmouth we have a full

complement of highly trained Veterinary Nurses, themselves completely competent at things like blood sampling and fluid assessment – BUT, equally keen on just bonding with a cat or a dog, and trying to suss out just what might work for that particular case. Is it handfeeding a particular diet / treat? Is it a shampoo and a bit of a massage? Is it just talking to them and stroking? It all sounds so straightforward, yet it’s only possible when a pet is resident in the hospital. What’s crucial, absolutely so, to my mind, is the continuity of care. While vet practices all over offer first class treatments during the working day, it’s often a different story out of hours. Even if your dog or cat is hospitalised during the day, then maybe after the doors are shut there is nobody to monitor that drip, check the patient is neither too

hot nor too cold, administer drugs at midnight or through the night… Or maybe you, the owner, have to take your pet to the out-ofhours veterinary service used by that practice when they shut in the evening, taking them, perhaps including an attached intravenous line – to somewhere else where they are safely monitored – and then having to take them back to the day-time practice to carry on the treatment once the night-care practice shuts its doors! While the quality of care I’m sure is first class in all events, the lack of continuity is questionable: where is the nurse bonding with your pet, for instance? Just to be humorous for a moment, how would you like it if you were rooted out from a bed in, say, Falmouth Hospital, transported by a relative to Treliske for an overnight stay, and then driven back to Falmouth the following morning, again by your longsuffering relative, just as you were about to tuck into your breakfast, and all with a drip stuck in your arm? And for several days on the trot??? At Rosemullion Veterinary Hospital we are very proud of our Hospital status and our ability to offer 24/7 access to vets and 24/7 resident nursing care for our patients. It’s not just the patients who are resident, the nurses are as well. Come and see us and / or look at our Facebook site. But in the meantime the staff at Rosemullion wish you all a very Happy New Year – and be utterly reassured, if your pet is ill, we WILL look after them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

GAMES REVIEW

Tomb Raider: Temple Of Osiris (PS4, XBOX 1) - Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris is a four-player co-operative adventure that aims to give players a taste of the “fan favorite”, old-school Tomb Raider. This game offers something a little different for PS4 and Xbox one players with four player co-op mode. Classic Die Hard Tomb Raider fans will love this and it’s also pretty easy to pick up and play for new fans. At £25 pound this game offers great value for money. 7/10 Little Big Planet 3 (PS4, PS3) - This latest installment in Sony’s Little Big Planet franchise is a thing of beauty from a design point of view. The graphics and new power up character abilities give something new to the franchise but its biggest flaw are the lack of co-operative game play. This should be a must for a game that is essentially made for kids and should give the opportunity to play with friends. 7/10 The Crew (PS4, XBOX 1, XBOX 360) - If you are a fan of the Need For Speed series, then you will like The Crew. It’s a proper arcade racing game, the co-op aspect will give you and your friends hours of playtime. The biggest problems come with the graphics. They are simply not up to scratch for the next gen and barely make the grade for current gen. But looking past those flaws you do have a fun and pleasing game. 7/10 Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire (3DS) - One of the most enduring game franchises returns with a re-mastered and 3D edition of 2002 Ruby and Sapphire. The game does fantastic job of reintroducing itself and the region of Hoenn to a new generation. It’s a game that will give you hours of fun as you try to “catch em all”. The 3D does add a beauty to the game. There a few issues with the game that you thought they would have ironed out but it doesn’t do enough to distract you from the game. 8/10
