ALLOW me to

introduce myself, my name is Martin Docking and I am the Clinical Dental Technician for Changing Faces Denture Clinic in Cornwall, situated in a beautiful, discreet location on the outskirts of St Agnes. Here is a brief insight into why visiting Changing Faces is a unique experience. At Changing Faces Cornwall we pride ourselves on making patients feel comfortable in our clinic. I offer all my patients a free initial consultation where, over a cup of tea or coffee, we discuss different treatments available for your individual situation, leaving you fully informed about your options and under no obligation. This is the first step towards a more confident smile. It often takes a lot of courage to make that initial ‘phone call to arrange an appointment, many patients are embarrassed about their current dental situation although there is no need

Thanks to your team for the lovely welcome each time I visited and you for understanding and caring chair side manner

Just a note to say how thrilled I am with my new dentures

My new teeth are so comfortable

to be, I see a lot of patients who have been wearing ill fitting, uncomfortable or unsightly dentures for years and are unaware that there is any alternative. I care and understand how this can affect lives, making it difficult to eat, speak and laugh usually resulting in low selfesteem. When patients decide to go ahead with treatment they are confident that I have listened to their individual needs and understand the treatment process and over a series of appointments I will make their bespoke dentures at the onsite laboratory. During the course of treatment I get to know my patient very well and I enjoy their growing anticipation as we near completion. My Job is so very rewarding when I see my patient leave on fit day full of confidence and wearing a huge smile, denture wearers who it is fantastic. are suffering with So if you are one of the problematic dentures many full or partial please call us to make

er body is not ruined by her stretchmark’s, she goddamm earnt those stripes. She is the inquisitive creature who is questioning how she is feeling. Her body is changing, not quite in teenage years but young enough to appreciate her body. She wants more knowledge about her health

because she can’t take it for granted anymore. Her recovery takes a little longer after a night out yet she still cracks on and runs her home. She is not a priority, everyone comes before her, and she gets tired, sometimes grumpy and will always be there for others. She is woman. No longer a teen and may be sprouting the odd grey hair but not a grandmother. This Phase of women is Goddess. Her time is precious and limited; she needs just a little time to recharge her batteries. Her happiness is essential to family happiness and wellbeing. The ability to switch off, recharge and re-energise is essential to her health and that of the family.

Have you seen the advert #thisgirlcan? It empowers women and demonstrates that

it is ok to be slightly wobbly, or really sweaty, as girls, leap, twist, dance, swim their way through a funky advert to the tunes of Missy Elliot “Get Your Freak on”. This empowers women to lose their inhibitions and be fabulous, to stop worrying and to start enjoying themselves for who they are. This powerful message demonstrates the shift in advertising and ease off the pressure to deliver high and compete on our shapes and sizes. It takes all colours to make a rainbow. The female revolution continues. Our role models are businesswomen and strong characters who stand up for change and have a strong voice. The Goddess has choices; she is strong and has a thirst for knowledge. Top Tips for The Goddess • Do something nice for yourself • Your body will be around a

lot longer than your expensive handbag (but a bag is always delightful) • Refuse just to be average • Be your own judge – things are not always what they seem from the eyes of others • Surround yourself with positive people • Your body, Your rules – don’t let society ruin this time for you • Appreciate all that your body can do • Laugh • Turn off the noise from the voices that stop us being negative about ourselves • True Beauty is within • Have fun • Work hard, play hard and give something back • Be Fabulous • Empower your best years The Goddess Phase starts around 30’s at a time when they are talking about female health and noticing changes I their bodies, paying attention to fads, trends, and diets. They also recognize that they simply can’t get away with the things used to or their methods are having a negative effect.

Goddesses are just women trying to change from within, evolve and improve their health. Your experts in fitness and wellness at The Core seek to create empathetic and effective programming for the Goddess. We understand Goddess health the joy of the hormone rollercoaster. Don’t miss it!

It is nice to finally feel the warm sunshine again. It feels like the new gardening season is with us at last. We are very busy on the nursery with loads of new fresh stock, much of which we have grown ourselves. The bare root season is now over but we have plenty of pot grown trees in stock, both fruit and ornamental.

DIARY FOR APRIL

• Apply a layer of mulch around your perennials, trees and shrubs to help slow down water evaporation when the weather gets hot. • Feed trees, shrubs and hedges with a fertilizer such as blood, fish and bone, Growmore or similar. Lightly fork in to the surface. • Roses are very greedy plants and would benefit from a feed with a good rose fertiliser. • Plant new plants. • Hardwood cuttings taken last year may now need to be planted out or potting on. • If you have plants that need support, get the supports in now, if you haven’t already done so. It is easier when there is less growth and they are supported from their first growth. • Tie in climbing plants and rambling roses. This is an on-going job all season. • Check tree ties firstly to weather they need replacing and secondly that they are not too tight and strangling the tree. • Prune Forsythia as soon as they have finished flowering. Cut back to strong young shoots. • Trim winter flowering Heathers. This will stop the plant from becoming leggy. • Dead head any daffodils and tulips as the flowers fade. Do not cut the foliage back.Allow the foliage to die back naturally so the energy goes back into the bulb for next year. • In any spells of warm weather check containers and new plants for drying out.The biggest killer of new plants is drying out. • If you haven’t already done so, think about getting your early potatoes in.

• Don’t forget to keep a rotation of salad crops going so you have home grown available all season. • Plant out strawberry beds making sure that you enrich the soil with very well-rotted manure or homemade compost. If you cover your plants with a cloche, it will encourage an earlier crop. • Mulch fruit trees with well-rotted manure or compost making sure it is not against the trunk. • Apply a slow release fertiliser around the bottom of raspberry canes to encourage a good crop. • Apply a high nitrogen feed to your lawn to give it a boost.A good method is to apply a combined fertiliser, weed killer and moss killer.Three jobs done in one! • Now is a good time to be repairing or replacing tired old lawns but if you re-seed or turf, make sure the soil is kept moist. • Before mowing the lawn, brush of any worm castings to avoid leaving small muddy patches. • Mow the lawn once a week but not to lower setting at first. Lower the blade nearer to the end of the month. • Re-cut the edges of the lawn if they have become untidy or broken down. • Top dress containers with new compost. Remove the top couple of inches of soil, moss and weeds and replace with fresh. This is also a good opportunity to top dress with a slow release granular fertiliser. • Keep an eye out for pests and diseases. They creep up on you and surprise you when you’re not looking!

1. You will need a deep, round, 20cm/8 inch cake tin. Lightly grease the cake tin and line the base with a circle of nonstick baking parchment. Pre-heat the oven to fan 160C/325F/ gas mark 3. Put all the ingredients for the cake except the pecan nuts into a large mixing bowl and mix well until evenly blended; an electric mixer is best for this but, of course, you can also beat by hand with a wooden spoon. Stir in the chopped pecan nuts. 2. Spoon the mixture into the prepared

cake tin and level the surface. Bake for 111/2 hours, until well risen, golden and springy to the touch. Allow to cool slightly, then turn the cake out onto a wire rack, peel off the lining paper and leave to cool completely. 3. Whip the cream until it just holds its shape and then fold in the maple syrup. 4. Split the cake horizontally into three and fill and cover with the cream, using a small palette knife to smooth it evenly over

Bery’s Top Tip! Getting it right.

If your cake cracks on top, it usually means the over was too hot, or the cake was placed too high on the shelf (although this doesn't apply if you've got a fan oven. If your cake sinks, it could be for a number of reasons, usually that the cake was taken out of the oven too early, the oven door was opened before the cake was set, or too much baking powder was used.

GAMES REVIEW

Battlefield: Hardline – All Formats

Out on March 19th is the next instalment in EA first person shooter series. However for the first time ever the series does not place you in a military role. It shifts focus to Law Enforcement. Placing you in the LAPD it focuses on the war on crime but also crucially offers you another role in playing as the criminal which will definitely appeal to GTA fans. It’s a bold and smart move by EA with the market being saturated with FPS. I think fans of the long running series will love it, especially with the new story and different modes on offer. Excitement meter: 10/10

Bloodborne – Playstation 4

From the makers of Demon Soul’s and Dark Souls comes the all new action adventure RPG Bloodborne. Regarded as possibly the best game to come out this year which is no mean feat considering the rest of the 2015 release slate. The same was said about Demon Souls and Dark Souls in the past and general opinion confirms this. The graphics look amazing which is great to finally see more games pushing the PS4 to fulfil its graphics potential. The setting of a Goth Victorian time was inspired by Bram Stokers Dracula novel. New players to the series will find this challenging but in a good way as the Souls games are notorious for their difficulty.

Mortal Kombat X – All Formats

The king of beat em ups returns for its tenth incarnation. Packed full with classic, new and surprise characters. This looks like an enormous amount of fun with its usual brutal gameplay and well-timed humour. That said they have yet to show anything that says or shows anything new. The problem with these games is they can get very repetitive fast but some do get around and Mortal Kombat has shown in the past that they have been able to reinvent the games. I hope the same goes for X. Loyal MK fans will certainly love them the game and I expect it to be a hit. Excitement meter 9/10

WARNING TO DOG OWNERS WALKING THEIR DOGS ON LIVESTOCK-GRAZED LANDS!

This month I’m writing about a condition which has recently come to the attention of me and my colleagues at Rosemullion, and which deserves a much wider appreciation by the general dog-owning public. It’s potentially quite serious, so pay attention! The gist of what I’m going to say has already appeared on the Rosemullion Facebook site, and was posted there by our Clinical Lead vet in Helston, Siobhàn McInerney, as we think we’ve seen the problem initially appearing in dogs on The Lizard.

SETTING THE SCENE

The first thing to realise is that farmers and horse-owners regularly worm their animals with what are known as “Ivermectin-based products”. They’re cheapish, do a very good job, are pretty safe in the main to handle, and can be applied in a pour-on form, just like the equivalent ‘spot-on’ products for dogs and cats.

Sheepdog, Shetland Sheepdog, McNab, German Shepherd, Australian Shepherd, English Shepherd, Long-Haired Whippet, or a Silken Windhound – now there’s a breed to Google!), there is a possibility – repeat POSSIBILITY, not probability – that that they may carry a gene in them that makes them susceptible to these ivermectinbased products, along with some other drugs. This is called the MDR-1 gene. Ivermectin -type drugs are used in commonly prescribed spot-on medications in our practice, as well as in oral wormers, but the data sheets for these drugs state that these products have been tested at up to ten times the recommended dose – repeat ten times overdose! – in proven ivermectin-sensitive Collies WITHOUT any adverse sideeffects.

THE POTENTIAL PROBLEM

Where a problem may arise is when ivermectin-sensitive dogs accidentally consume a large amount of ivermectin-based products. Now this can be something quite uncommon, like

more common, in eating horse manure (or possibly sheep/cow manure) and the amount of the drug taken in like this is potentially poisonous. Some dogs, after all, do like a nice appetiser of fresh horse dung, and if that horse has recently been treated with one of these wormers, there may well be enough of the drug coming through its guts and being concentrated in the dung.

The effects of a toxic dose are usually on the nervous system, so you may get twitching, dilated pupils, unsteadiness of gait, confusion, disorientation, drooling, and possibly these signs progress to seizures or a coma if the dose is high enough. Treatment is symptomatic – intravenous fluids, sedatives to relieve any convulsions, and drugs to support the dog’s metabolism while it gets rid of the poison.

THE SOLUTION

If your dog is a Collie, or a Collie-type, or another herding breed (particularly Old English

hovering up discarded horse worming syringes, or maybe

Be reassured right at the start that this is not an issue at all for most dogs. The risk is only there if your dog is one of the likely breeds to possess the MDR-1 gene, making it supersensitive to the effects of these drugs,AND is likely to eat enough faeces of a large animal that has been recently wormed with an ivermectin-based product. But there are several things you can do. Firstly, if you’re concerned, avoid walking your

dogs over fields that have had horses or sheep in them in the last 2-3 weeks, 4 weeks in cattle, especially if your dog is very much into eating faeces.

Secondly though, if your dog is one of the breeds I’ve mentioned, or a crossbred “with some Collie in him somewhere along the line”, we can do gene testing at any branch of Rosemullion, to see if they possess the gene which makes them susceptible to these agricultural wormers. The process is very simple.Your dog needs to be over 12 weeks old, and have had no food for 2 hours beforehand. A simple cheek swab can be taken by a nurse or vet (CSI style), and sent off to the lab that we use, and then we usually get the results within three weeks. We’ve recently performed a few of these tests on Collie pups and so far all have tested negative .... so that’s something to consider for peace of mind!

keep your eyes on the prize

The Next Step… Enjoy that ‘oh so stressful’ dissertation because in a few

months you will be unemployed and no longer able to hide behind the infamous student label. Say goodbye to student discounts, sleeping in till 11 and going out on a Wednesday, your life will soon revolve around online math’s tests, cover letters and questioning parents.

First things first, if you’re feeling a little bit lost and don’t know where to start, book a meeting with your university’s career advisors. They will be able to help you with CV/cover letters, interviews, career paths/decisions and how to network. Remember you are paying £9,000 a year, use all the resources available! Next up, make sure your online profile and CV is up to date and looking sharp. Tailor your CV depending on the job you apply for, employers will want to see that you are relevant and interested in the role from previous work experience. To be honest by this point you should already have some work experience under your belt, but if you have been hardly working instead of working hard this is the time to act. Believe it or not

placements and internships are very hard to come by. It is an incredibly competitive world out there filled with 100’s of students competing for that same Heat magazine junior fashion assistant position - its time to get real. Apply to local businesses in your area, or in locations you have somewhere to stay, internships are usually unpaid. Relevant work experience on your CV will be what separates you from the other 200 applicants. Also in the world we live in sometimes it’s not what you know but who you know, use your connections wisely especially your lecturers, ask them if there is anyone they could put you in touch with. Unfortunately, companies take their graduate recruitment very seriously so could often mean you attending two or more interviews. Not only do you

have the worry/stress of exams you now also have to make yourself available at the drop of a hat for interviews. This is not the time for so many reasons to go on holiday or disappear for a few weeks, graduate interview days can often be organised on very short notice. If this is your first ‘real world’ interview seek advice/ help with interviews this could be through your recruiter (if using one), a university advisor or lets face it how much would your parents love to help you out with this one! Oh and dress the part, if nothing else its fun to wear a suit for the day whilst humming The Apprentice theme tune. However, not all companies like this corporate approach so find out the dress code before going to the interview. At the end of the day it is all about being active and

constantly looking for your next opportunity. The best place to look is often company websites, find out about their graduate recruitment and how to apply. Also get in touch with recruiters who specialise in entry level or graduate schemes they will be able to guide and consult you on different roles and companies. This is now a make or break time for you in so many ways, don’t fall at the last hurdlealthough exams come first at the moment, don’t take your eyes off the prize and forget about the future!
