‘Get your self confidence back with Martin’s help’ Patient Comments I am thrilled with the result! You have given me my confidence back and I feel much better about myself
Thanks to your team for the lovely welcome each time I visited and you for understanding and caring chair side manner
AS summer approaches we start to think
about those long, warm nights, socialising with friends and family over a BBQ. Steaks, burgers and sausages served with crusty bread and salad sounds delicious doesn’t it? Unfortunately there will be many people who won’t be able to enjoy a BBQ like this. For those who have no teeth or have loose fitting dentures any meal can be a struggle, leaving them unable to chew their food, which can often result in heartburn or indigestion. Research also reveals that many of these people lack self-confidence and avoid every day activities such as eating out in public, being intimate and going out with family and friends. They are often reluctant to seek professional advice because of the stigma associated with dentures and the fear of having an oral examination. Existing denture wearers may wonder why they may need to change their denture. Dentures are custom made to fit your mouth and shouldn’t need any fixative, however over time the mouth changes shape and dentures may become loose and not fit well. A poorly fitting denture causes irritation and sores therefore leading to some considerable discomfort. The British Dental Health Foundation advises that replacing lost or missing teeth is very good for your health and appearance. Dentures replace your lost teeth, bone and gums and give support to your cheeks and lips.Without this support, sagging facial muscles can make a person look older and they will find it harder to eat and speak properly. A FREE one hour consultation at the discreet private clinic of Martin Docking will give you the opportunity to consider your options with no obligation. The clinic, set on the outskirts of St Agnes in a countryside location, has ample parking and a warm and relaxed greeting to all our visitors. The consultation is completely free and Martin’s role is primarily to put your mind at ease and show you how a denture can be made to give you a natural looking smile. If you decide to take treatment, Martin will carefully go through the entire treatment plan, explaining each stage of the pain-free procedure. Over a series of appointments Martin will make your bespoke denture that returns you confidence and your smile.
Just a note to say how thrilled I am with my new dentures
My new teeth are so comfortable
I am so pleased I was able to have such great care and attention to detail at Changing Faces

Walk 1 mullion cove to lizard point and village
• START: Mullion Cove TR12 7EP • FINISH: Lizard Village TR12 7NJ • LENGTH: 6.9 miles (11.1 km • DIFFICULTY: Moderate • TERRAIN: After a fairly steep climb from Mullion Cove
the walk is mainly along the cliff tops, but with descents and ascents where valleys meet the coast.
Walk 2 coverack and black Head • START: Coverack Car Park TR12 6TQ
• FINISH Coverack • LENGTH 5.0 miles (8.0 km) • DIFFICULTY: Moderate • TERRAIN: There are some steep stretches of ascent and descent and the path is narrow and rocky in places. Starting in the fishing village of Coverack, one of only three places in Britain where the junction of rocks between the Earth's crust and the mantle below it is on display, this invigorating coastal walk visits the crumbling ramparts of a prehistoric cliff castle. There is an optional detour through a sculpture park, and some stunning sea views from Black Head, as well as a wealth of wildflowers in spring and summer. A good walk for older children, especially if the sculpture garden is included.

Walk 3
porthallow
and nare point
• START: Porthallow Beach TR12 6PP • FINISH: Porthallow Beach • LENGTH: 4.4 miles (7.1 km) • DIFFICULTY: Moderate • TERRAIN: There is some ascent and descent, with steps, but nothing too strenuous. This walk starts in the fishing village of Porthallow (pronounced 'Prallow'), a cluster of whitewashed cottages with pilchard cellars and net lofts on the picture-postcard quayside. From here it follows the Coast Path over heathland and grassland and on around Nare Head, where elaborate stage sets lured enemy bombers away from Falmouth during the Second World War. Passing the remnants of a Bronze Age settlement on The Herra, a tiny headland guarding the mouth of the creek, the walk turns inland at the beach at Gillan, where boats are drawn up on the sand under a fringe of trees. This walk is particularly good for dog-walking as it passes beaches and a pub where dogs are welcome. Either at the beginning or the end of this walk be sure to visit The Fat Apple Café, a true delight!
For full route description see www.falmouthwave.co.uk
This walk is from the picturesque Mullion Cove, along the wild and exposed cliffs of the west coast of the Lizard Peninsula. Pass beautiful sheltered coves, before reaching Lizard Point, the southernmost point of mainland Britain. This walk is particularly good for dogs as it passes beaches and pubs where dogs are welcome. There are many features to interest children as well as the beaches, including the Marconi monument, where the first transatlantic radio signal was sent, and the wartime airfield. It is a lovely walk in spring, when the banks of wildflowers are at their most lavish, and in autumn, when the flocks of migrant warblers and swallows sometimes draw the attention of a passing marsh harrier. It is also part of our "Summer Strolls". Use it (or part of it) to visit the sandy beach at Mullion Cove, the very pretty Kynance Cove, the pebble beach at Pentreath or the tiny beach at Polpear Cove.
For full route description see www.falmouthwave.co.uk
Mullion Cove, Kynance Cove and Lizard Point and Village. Near to the start of the walk in Mullion, the Old Inn and at the end of it the Tophouse and the Witchball are recommended by users.

That golden orb arrives in the sky and we are busy getting our boats on the water, prepping our gardens and furvishly springcleaning. Whilst we are organising our home lives, I am thinking about inspiring you in my club. What can I bring to you that feels as fresh as a sunny day in Falmouth? I have been in the fitness industry many years and seen so many fad and trends come and go. I remember when core stability was considered
All exercises performed today have great history and have been reinvented time and time again to give movement a fresh approach. In Pilates, the method was taken from Greek and Roman methods of training, yet there were only 34 exercises created. In 13 years I have reinvented the 34 exercises in every class. Giving it a fresh approach and as I learn more about the human body I can apply new findings to all movement patterns.

W ho’s got your vote on th M ay 7
?
Here at the Wave magazine we have been busy on the campaign trail.
All nine of the Truro and Falmouth parliamentary candidates have kindly sent in a brief article about themselves and a synopsis of their manifestos In order to win your vote
Stuart Roden The Labour Party
Simon Rix Liberal Democrats
"I have been a member of the local Labour party for 30 years. I have been a local councilor for 24 years, and was honored to serve as Mayor of Truro. I have extensive knowledge of the NHS, Local Government, Devon and central government. In my view the key issues for the election are
I’m a local dad and I am campaigning hard to protect our hospitals, schools, transport, environment and incomes here in Cornwall. I want put an end to the privatisation of our NHS services at Treliske and Falmouth hospitals, and an end to the under-funding of our schools in Cornwall. Our roads and buses also need improvement, as does our environment. And everyone knows that wages in Cornwall are already too low.
• The austerity policies of the current coalition have caused very real hardship in Cornwall. Families, earnings and spending power have declined, whilst the cost of living has risen year on year.Austerity hasn’t worked; we need a change of direction. We should not expect workers, students, the disabled the poor and unemployed to pick up the pieces. • The NHS is a crucial issue for Labour. We have recently seen the NHS in Cornwall in melt down. The “top down” reorganisation was a £3 billion waste of money. The NHS would be unrecognisable with further privatisation and cuts if Labour doesn’t win.The NHS must be a priority. • Housing is at a crisis point. Over 28,000 people are on Cornwall’ waiting lists. Most ordinary people have been priced out of the home owning market. We need to build houses to rent at realistically affordable rents. • High skilled, well paid and permanent jobs need to be created. We need to encourage apprenticeships and create opportunities to “up skill” our workforce. Jobs must pay at least the living wage.Working people should have decent employment rights and we should end Zero hours contracts and ensure either a paid job or training is available for everyone. • Education is under real threat. If the Tories are elected they would cut education spending. We cannot allow the austerity programme of the coalition to blight the next generation. We would cut class sizes and increase funding."
The problem with the Conservatives is, if they are allowed to rule alone, they would: - Allow more NHS privatisation - Cut funding for our schools in real terms - Introduce £50 billion of unnecessary cuts to other services like our roads, buses and the police - Damage our wages and our economy in Cornwall with their lower “regional pay” plans UKIP are no better.Their leader recently said he wants foreign workers to take up the better paid jobs - leaving local people to do the low paid work. And he still wants a US-style privatised NHS. No wonder more and more people are realising that UKIP are just too extreme. Cornwall is different in many ways. For a start the Lib Dems in Cornwall are up. In 2013 we became the largest party in Cornwall and in 2014 our vote went up 22% in the by-election between Truro and Falmouth - all the other parties saw their vote drop. I need just 435 more votes to win. That’s incredibly close. Labour and all the rest are all more than 15,000 votes behind here. They have never won from so far back, in any election, ever. So if you want a sensible balanced approach and a hard working local MP who will always put Cornwall first, then please lend me your vote.
Karen Westbrook Green Party I am Karen Westbrook and I’m seeking your vote in this election as the Green Party candidate. We need policies that meet the needs of the vast majority of people and not those of the minority. I want a fairer society and a sustainable world. Austerity has failed and is destructive. We will end austerity and restore public sector services. We will move from cuts to making investment in decent jobs and opportunities. Conservative; liberal Democrat and Labour policies will all continue to lead us further into an unequal and unfair society. I will actively support greater investment in Cornwall’s hospitals and will fight to have an NHS that will provide free high quality health care for all and oppose any moves to privatise the NHS. Cornwall’s environment must be protected from short term interests and over development. We need to protect Green Field areas from loss and ensure they are retained for the good of local people. Housing policy must be based on the needs of local people. The Green Party is committed to people having homes that they can afford to live in.There will be investment in social rented homes and reforms of the private rented sector to increase security of tenure. We want to see better policies for young people by scrapping university tuition fees and bringing back free schools and academies under Local Authority control to ensure high quality education for all and fair allocation of school funding to Cornwall.
Rik Evans National Health Action Party LETS END “BUGGINS TURN” IN TRURO & FALMOUTH TIME FOR A POSITIVE CHANGE. “In May I resigned from a job I loved , vice chairman and non-executive director of RCHT. I made a principled stand against the privatisation of cleaning and catering at the hospital trust. Experience tells us that the first major health service privatisation in Cornwall, the out of hours GP service run by private profit company Serco has failed. I alone voted against Serco receiving the contract ten years ago and I have been proved right to do so. Running private companies in Cornwall from the age of 21 I am certainly not anti business, but dislike private shareholders profiting from patient need. The company who won the cleaning and catering contract at RCHT had a deplorable employee record, strikes and employment tribunals, which RCHT doesn’t need.Although I tried to inform the RCHT board about this the chairman refused to let the board hear this important information and the board decided to grant Mitie the contract.Within weeks of the contract beginning in October there were numerous complaints being made about the cleaning and catering contracts they delivered. All polls are predicting another hung parliament with no party having overall control.A National Health Action Party MP in the next parliament could mean an end to the destruction of our NHS.
I ask you to vote for me and “The Common Good”.
My experience of over 30 years on health boards in Cornwall as well as running private businesses in the county give me unprecedented understanding of the needs of our community.Without great publicly provided health services and strong and confident private businesses we are a diminished society. For info on all our policies.” www.nhap.org and www.rikevansnha.wordpress.com
Stephen Richardson Mebyon Kernow
Stanley Guffogg The Principles of Politics
The Green Party has a manifesto commitment to the devolution of more power to Cornwall and the formation of a Cornish Assembly. Cornwall needs a better deal and decisions affecting us should be made locally and not far away in an out of touch Westminster.
Stephen, a Bachelor of Laws, now runs his own business near Illogan and lives in the heart of the village. His earlier career has provided him with a broad range and depth of business, legal and practical experience. He has enjoyed twenty years as a business manager, run property development projects and acted as a legal consultant. However, he describes his greatest achievements as:“being fortunate enough to have married his wife Mandy and introducing three wonderful children Rebecca, Sam and Jack to the world.” As well as working hard Stephen plays hard. He has been a bass guitarist in a ‘new romantic’ rock band. He also spent a summer touring the United States in a drum corps consisting of 128 members - playing in a horn line of 64. It has also been known for Stephen to turn out as the bugler of the 3/95th Rifles re-enactment society! Gwella
The Principles of Politics (PoP) Party is an effort to get people to think again, and at a more general level, about economics and politics. The typical trend in thinking, what with the accumulation of so much public debt, has been that austerity must be a good idea (or at least not necessarily a bad one). For, like all good responsible households, when one has so much debt, it must be time to cut back on our expenses. But of course the economy taken as a whole is not at all like a household with the consequence that none of the above reasoning applies. Briefly, here’s how it works: Since every act of spending is someone else’s income, if everyone were to attempt to cut back on their spending at the same time, total income would shrink along with expenditure, and we should end up in no better position to be able to resolve our original debt problem (check out our website, principlesofpolitics.com, for a fuller explanation of this phenomenon) and this is more or less the present situation we find ourselves in with our economy. We argue that it is time for a re-think and that: • It’s time to curb the excessive power of corporations. • It’s time to revitalise public services and stop running them as businesses. • It’s time to create careers that provide security and a decent wage. • It’s time for a tax system which is progressive and not open to abuse by those most able to pay. • It’s time to stop demonising sections of the population and deal with the real causes of our problems. • It’s time to stop equating economic growth will wellbeing. • It’s time to take real action to prevent ecological disasters.
John Hyslop UKIP
Sarah Newton The Conservative Party
I’ve lived and worked in Truro and Falmouth for thirty years and thoroughly enjoyed it. My wife and I brought up our children here and I’ve spent the vast majority of my career serving the Royal Cornwall Hospital as a Consultant Radiologist. One of my proudest achievements was the setting up of the scanning and ultrasound service for Cornwall, from scratch, in 1985, and equally I am honoured to have worked alongside the incredible nurses, doctors, porters, paramedics and other staff who provide care for Cornwall.
Sarah Newton, 53, married Alan, 26 years ago at St Budock Church, they have three children and live in Mylor Bridge. Sarah was educated at Marlborough Infants, Clare Terrace and Falmouth Schools before reading History at Kings College London and representing Cornwall as a Rotary International Postgraduate Scholar in the USA.
I didn't find politics - rather it found me, the lack of trust in the established parties and their broken promises made my decision to stand for me. I want to give you the chance to be represented by a good candidate, supporting sound policies, in the knowledge that a vote for UKIP gets you a UKIP member of parliament. Local issues should be decided by local people. UKIP's offer a policy of local referendums, directly giving people a say in how their community is run. This means we can decide on issues such as major planning decisions, allowing the people to decide directly what is best for our communities, businesses and landscape. Direct democracy can go further, we should be able to make politicians more accountable, and I will campaign to give you the right to recall your MP. I have seen many changes in the National Health Service, and believe our NHS must be protected from external pressures, EU regulations and corporate interference. UKIP are against further use of private finance initiatives and we guarantee health care, which is free at point of delivery. As an MP I will use my experience to work with professionals, patients, local government to ensure first class medical services for all of Cornwall’s residents.
Loic Rich Independent Candidate Born in Treliske, Cornwall, Loic was brought up in St Agnes, went to Richard Lander School, and Falmouth University. He lives and works in Truro. With previous employment in catering, medical administration, and retail, Loic works as copywriter and as a singer songwriter performing around Cornwall at various music venues. Loic’s hobbies are kitesurfing, hiking, and short mat bowls. Loic is fighting for more investment into Cornwall, to ensure everyone has the opportunity to share in a growing economy, for higher wages and security in retirement. Loic says:‘Local families and workers must be prioritised for genuinely affordable or social housing in residential areas - not government targets for developing greenfield countryside.’ Loic has fought for major new Cornish rail and road projects, helped improve health and elderly care services, as well as worked to deliver on UK wide issues. Mayor of Truro, Chair of the Cornwall Council Harbours Board, Loic is an experienced campaigner and local councillor. Loic says:‘I believe it is very important to have someone who is local and committed, and understands the needs of our area – to stand up for our community.’
Sarah's family have played an active role in our community for generations. Her ancestors were tin miners and latterly shop keepers in High Street, Falmouth. One grandfather worked in the Docks, while the other played a significant role in developing Falmouth Football Club. Sarah's first job was while she was at school, helping in the family business, cleaning caravans and serving in the campsite shop. Following university, Sarah had a successful career serving as directors of American Express Europe,Age Concern England and the International Longevity Centre - UK. In 2007 she decided to put something back into the community that raised her, applied for only one parliamentary seat and was elected as our local MP in 2010. Since then, Sarah has worked hard representing her constituents on a wide range of issues and her work here and in Parliament reflects local priorities. Ensuring that while the nation's finances are being sorted, local people with low incomes are protected, with tax cuts and increases to the state pension. Campaigning for Cornwall to get at least it's fair share of public funding for our vitally important public services and schools. Securing investment for Cornwall's infrastructure, supporting local businesses to set-up and grow, employ more people, improve skills and increase wages. In 2012 she was elected onto the Science & Technology Select Committee, and strongly supports Falmouth and Exeter Universities and the Marine College. Sarah has a track record of getting things done, visit www:sarahnewton.org.uk and see for yourself.

The bare root season is finally over.
It has been a great to see so many Cornish Apple varieties to sell. It is so important to preserve them as they are different from the usual supermarket types. We also grow a lot of our plants ourselves or use Cornish and South West growers whenever possible to keep it local rather than using massive national companies.
DIARY FOR MAY
• Start to harden off half hardy annuals, Dahlias and Cannas before planting out after (hopefully) the last frost! Trim back spreading plants like Aubrieta when they have finished flowering. This will encourage fresh new growth and more flowers. • Allow spring bulb foliage to die back naturally to rejuvenate the bulb for next spring. • Tie in climbing and rambling roses. By laying the stems horizontally will encourage more flowers. • Tie sweet peas to plant supports to encourage them to climb • Prune spring flowering shrubs after flowering • Feed and water containers and remember to keep doing them throughout the summer.A liquid feed every 2-4 weeks will promote healthy growth and healthy plants are less susceptible to diseases • Water all young fruit trees and bushes. The main reason for losing new fruit trees and bushes is lack of water. Keep the soil moist. This applies equally to young ornamental trees • Harvest Rhubarb but only ever pick a third of the amount of stems • Harden off tomatoes, courgettes and pumpkins ready for planting out later this month • Pinch out the growing tip of Broad Beans as soon as the beans start to appear at the base of the plant. This should help to reduce the risk of
black fly attack • Keep up the rotation of salad crops so you don’t run out • Keep on top of the weeding throughout the garden. Why waste water and nutrients on weeds • Hang pheromone traps in plum trees and apple trees to help prevent codling moth attacks and to monitor plum fruit moth • Remove fruits from trees in their first year. The tree needs the energy to develop into a good healthy strong tree and not to produce one or two low quality fruits • Regularly check your gooseberries for Saw Fly Caterpillars. It is amazing how quickly they will decimate gooseberry bush leaves • Net soft fruits to prevent the birds from enjoying your fruits • Lay straw under strawberry plants to keep the fruits clean and off the ground and cover with a net to keep the birds off • Feed the lawn with a high nitrogen fertilizer to promote healthy green growth • Increase humidity in the greenhouse on hot days by damping it down. This may deter red spider mite • Don’t forget to ventilate the greenhouse on warm days • Finally, keep your eyes open for pests and diseases; you know they creep up on you if you’re not looking!!

BEWARE – ADDERS!!
I wrote about adder bites around a year ago, but I make no apologies at all for reproducing pretty much the same article again now, as we have already seen our first cases of adder bites in dogs. See also our Facebook site: www.facebook.com/rosemullionvets where there is also a piece on adder bites. More importantly, the weather has warmed up – and as I write we’re in the middle of a lovely spell of spring weather, with wall to wall sunshine and temperatures around 15 degrees and more! Now, not only do we like that sort of weather, especially the sun, but adders like to bask in it as well. Also, adders are just coming out of hibernation, so are still generally a bit dozy; and their venom is also fairly concentrated compared to later on in the year. We commonly see cases in dogs walked on the Towans at Hayle, on the Goonhilly Downs, areas of the coastal path, and – a new one this year – around Stithians lake. However, before you start panicking, bites are still quite rare, as snakes will hear and / or sense dogs in their vicinity, so will retreat into their nests. Also, the most important thing to remember is that treated promptly and appropriately, approximately 97% of cases make a full recovery. The following information will help to answer some of your questions regarding adder bites:
1.What do adders look like?
Most adders are distinctively marked with a dark zig-zag running down the length of the spine, and an inverted ‘V’ or ‘X’ shape on the neck. Adults are 50-60cms long, and their colour ranges from light grey/brown to almost black.
2.When should I start to worry about my dog being bitten on a walk?
Most adder bite cases occur between April and July. The snakes generally hibernate from October to March, but if the weather is warm enough they can be seen as early as February and as late as November. Most bites tend to occur in the afternoon when adders are more active and when the heat from the sun is at its maximum – they love to sunbathe!
3.Where are adders found?
Their habitats include sand dunes, moorland, heathland, rocky hillsides and the edges of moorland – well, that’s pretty much the whole of the county! Particularly favourite spots seem to be the Towans around Hayle, and Goonhilly Downs, but they’re also about on the coastal paths too.
4.What are the signs that my dog has been bitten?
Most bites occur on the face, inside the mouth, or the front legs – and sometimes you will hear your dog yelp or cry when an adder has struck. Bites will cause swelling of the affected area within two hours, and it’s often dark-coloured and can become quite severe and painful. Sometimes you will also see two puncture marks in the centre of the swelling. Your dog may be lame or seemingly just ‘below par’, but in more serious cases they may have pale gums, bruising, drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea, and be quite lethargic. Worst case scenario is that they collapse, have breathing difficulties, start having tremors, and may deteriorate into convulsions.
5.What should I do if I think my dog has been bitten?
If possible try to carry your dog to your car to try and reduce the
spread of the venom via their circulation. Keep him quiet and warm while contacting your vet. Using a cold water compress on the affected area may help to limit some of the swelling.
6.What will my vet do to treat my dog and how will he respond to the treatment?
Treatment for adder bites involves pain relief, intravenous fluids to support the circulation, specific “European Adder anti-venom” given intravenously in some (but not all) cases, antibiotics, and they will be hospitalised for monitoring. We don’t use the anti-venom on all cases as there is a risk of an allergic reaction of the dog to it (which could be worse than the bite), but in a lot of cases there’s no choice. The severity of the bite, and therefore the treatment that your dog will get, depends on - The location of the bite: face and mouth are worst as the venom quickly gets into the circulation from the hefty blood supply to the face - The size of dog: most commonly it’s terriers who are affected, but the bigger the dog the bigger their circulation and the more dilute the venom - The amount of venom injected by the snake, thought to be worst early in the season - The amount the patient moves post-bite, hence why we advise carrying the dog to a car - Any pre-existing disease your dog may have, such as kidney or liver problems (which would reduce the dog’s ability to detoxify the venom), or heart disease (which might intensify clotting problems and circulation failure due to shock). However, these serious effects only occur in around 5% of cases, so don’t panic!!
Pictured is “Harry” who was bitten on the face whilst walking on The Lizard last year. He was promptly treated with intravenous fluids, European Adder anti-venom, and pain relief, and recovered sufficiently to be discharged in 24 hours!
One last thing to add to all our cat owners out there … it is possible for your cat to be bitten by an adder as well, though MUCH less likely!!
