fun in the sun
Here are some of the most frequently asked question to help you and your family stay safe in the sun and Enjoy the summer! What sun protection factor (SPF)
Don’t spend any longer in the sun than you would without sunscreen. Sunscreen should not be used as an excuse to stay out in the sun. Instead, it offers protection when exposure is unavoidable. The summer sun is most damaging to your skin in the middle of the day. Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm, under umbrellas, trees, canopies or indoors.
should I use? Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. The higher the SPF, the better. Go for broadspectrum sunscreens, which protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays. Make sure the product is not past its expiry date. Most sunscreens have a shelf life of two to three years. What is broad spectrum and the star-rating? Broad-spectrum products provide protection against the sun’s UVB and UVA rays. The sun protection factor, or SPF, is a measurement of the amount of UVB protection. The higher the number, the greater the protection. In the UK, UVA protection is measured with a star rating. Sunscreens has from 0 to 5 stars. The higher the number of stars, the greater the protection. How long can I stay in the sun?
Should I reapply sunscreen if I swim? Water washes off sunscreen and the cooling effect of the water can make you think you're not getting burned. Water also reflects UV rays, increasing your exposure. Even "waterproof" sunscreens should be reapplied after going in the water. What should I do if I get sunburn? Painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, will ease the pain by helping to reduce inflammation caused by sunburn. Sponge sore skin with cool water, then apply soothing after sun or calamine lotion. If you feel unwell or the skin swells badly or blisters, seek medical help. Stay out of the sun until all signs of redness have gone. Are children more at risk of sunburn? Young skin is delicate and very easily damaged by the sun. Use at least a factor 15 sunscreen and choose a broad-spectrum brand that has a four- or five-star rating. Apply it to areas not protected by clothing, such as the face, ears, feet and backs of hands. Choose sunscreens that are formulated for children and babies' skin, as these are less likely to irritate their skin. My child has eczema. What sunscreen should I use? Some sunscreens may aggravate eczema. Check the label for any ingredients that you know your child is allergic to. Test any new sunscreen on a small area before applying it to the whole body. Put on your child’s emollient and steroids first then put the sun protection cream on 30 minutes later. Remember to put more sun protection cream on regularly throughout the day and especially after swimming. What are the symptoms of heat exhaustion? Heat exhaustion occurs when the body cannot lose heat fast enough. If it's not treated quickly, it can lead to heat stroke, which is a much more dangerous condition. Signs of heat exhaustion include faintness, dizziness, palpitations, nausea, headaches, low blood pressure, tiredness, confusion, loss of appetite and hallucinations. Should I cover up my mole when I’m in the sun? If you have lots of moles or freckles, you're more likely to develop skin cancer, so you need to take extra care. Avoid getting caught out by sunburn. Use shade, clothing and sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 to protect yourself. Keep an eye out for changes to your skin and report these to your doctor without delay. Skin cancer is much easier to treat if it is found early. Use the mole self-assessment tool to see whether you could have a cancerous mole. Source of information www.nhs.uk

Femmes de la Mer
The first all female Shanty Group! As their name suggests they are a beautiful, lively bunch of women from Cornwall with a collective love of the sea and an intention to make magic music happen. They formed because they felt the Falmouth Shanty Festival would benefit from some female inspiration. Telling stories of the sea, old and new, with heartfelt passion and beautiful harmonies, their intention is to keep the tradition of shanties alive and kicking from a fresh female perspective. Their songs range from old traditional to contemporary shanties, as well as original compositions and they hope to give the men a run for their money! Phylicia Rashad‘when women come together with a collective intention, magic happens!’

GAMES REVIEW
Review of the month Project: CARS - PS4, XBOX ONE
Recommendation by Stan and written by Kristian Greet
Bandai Namcos new racing simulation is a welcome breath of fresh air in the crowded race genre. The attention to detail is there to see from tyre wear, mechanical failure and damage to the cars. The graphics are superb and also make it more of a challenge game for instance when you head down a straight part of the race track with the blinding sun bearing down on the track. It’s make you almost guess where you have to break. It’s these small details which make a great game. It also certainly makes a case for being the definitive racing simulation, with a Franchise Mode that allows you to carve out a personalised career starting in the Karting world and then progressing on to whichever motorsport specialisation you prefer including Rally, Touring Cars, Open-Wheel, GT, Le Mans. It’s unfortunate that the game has no official licence for F1 but that can be over looked when the game is this good. Stan’s Rating: 9/10
Previews The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - PS4, XBOX ONE
The Witcher franchise finally makes it next gen debut. The long delayed game is already carrying a lot of Buzz surrounding it. With some reputable websites calling the game that realizes the full potential of the next gen consoles. My observations of the trailers and footage from the game are right in line with the above statement. The graphics and the combat are easily the most impressive from the footage. Combat seamlessly flows whether you are using the magic abilities or melee attack. The facial animation along with the voice acting are very good. The Witcher has the possibly to certainly be the breakout game of 2015. Excitement Meter 10/10
Farming Simulator 15 - PS4, PS3, XBOX ONE, Xbox 360
Now comes a surprising inclusion on our list, Developer Giants Software latest instalment in their Farming Simulator franchise. The Farming Simulator have gained somewhat of a cult following the release of the first game back in 2013. It sells surprisingly well. Obviously the game is aimed at budding young farmers and simulation game fans but having briefly playing the first one I was surprised by how accessible it was to pick up and play having never played before. So this might be good game to try if you are tired of sports, shooter and rpg games and want to play something different. Excitement Meter 7/10 If you agree with any the games that we have reviewed and previewed then please come on down to the shop and buy! CALL STAN NOW ON:

Some of you may have heard about this condition as it has been the subject of articles in newspapers, and it also recently got a mention on the BBC Local TV News as being of concern to dog owners in the south-west. It was first noted in the 1980s in the USA in Greyhounds, but there have been some cases found in the UK from around 2012.
W HATI SI T?
Well, the truth is, nobody is that sure, though it is known by a much more scientific name of “Cutaneous or Renal Glomerular Vasculopathy” (or CRGV) as it affects the skin and kidneys in particular. Numerous tests have been done on affected animals looking at blood analyses, tissue samples, bacteriology, virology, toxicology and so on, but nothing has been consistently found in all the cases so far examined as to suggest what it is that’s producing this condition.
HOW I TMI GHT AFF ECTYOURDOG ANDW HATYOU SHOULDLOOK OUTFOR
been seen on the face and underneath of the dog – the chest and belly. The skin lesions may initially appear as areas of reddened skin, or mild blisters, but they go on to form deep ulcers going through the entire thickness of the skin – these things range in size from 0.5 cms to 5 cms in diameter, so they can be quite large. So, initially, you may just notice your dog licking at their foot or leg and it may not be clear what the problem is underneath the fur.
Other than that, dogs are typically otherwise feeling very well and full of it, but over the subsequent one to nine days they develop the clinical signs of acute kidney injury. These signs may include being very thirsty, depressed, off their food or vomiting. Some dogs will have both skin problems AND be showing the signs of the kidney disease at the same time, but
Right at the start, affected dogs typically have some kind of damage to the skin of the end of a limb (below the elbow and stifle) although lesions have also
only very rarely do the kidney symptoms flare up before the skin ones. Essentially, the kidneys progressively shut down so the dog goes into an almost irreversible metabolic collapse. There is no apparent breed, age or sex predilection. Over a hundred cases are thought to have been seen in the UK over the past three years, coming from all parts of the UK. To start with there were clusters of cases from the New Forest area, but now that the disease is becoming better known, affected dogs are being found from all over. There has been a case in Launceston, but nothing further west than that. So far.
W HAT’ STO BE DONE?
First of all, this disease is still very rare. On the other hand, skin damage / grazes / cuts / ulcerations on the legs and feet of dogs are very common, and only to be expected when dogs run at full pelt across rough ground! This traumatic kind of skin damage tends to get better quickly though, whereas the lesions typical of Alabama Rot tend to get worse. Secondly, however, If you are a dog owner and are concerned
about your pet, please speak to your local vet in the first instance. If they are particularly worried then there is a specialist referral centre in Hampshire which is currently co-ordinating the gathering of evidence on this condition, and advice can easily be sought from them. Initial investigations of a suspicious case would include blood and urine tests to monitor for the development of the kidney stages of this disease, and any potentially affected dog would be hospitalised with intravenous fluids and other supportive treatment administered to try and maintain kidney function. Although some dogs have survived, the overall prognosis, sadly, is poor.
I NTHEFUTURE
We need more evidence to try and find a cause – but despite the hundred or so cases so far we don’t appear to be any nearer to finding anything out. Whatever it is though, remember that cases are VERY rare – but if you are concerned, get your dog checked over by your vet and let them decide! A Family Business Through History
Seven Stars today
1368 a grain store
Written by Amy Bennetts Landlady and 7th Generation of The Seven Stars Falmouth The balcony was kept but the decorative part was taken away and used for ammunition in the war. The bar hasn’t been decorated since the 1950s due to its heritage listing. The wooden panels that make up the walls and ceilings are from shipyards over the duck egg blue are very much now a traditional nicotine stained. There are quirky points to the pub, the remnants of a smuggling hatch in the bar, a coffin hatch in the back saloon bar. Mobile phones with 6 inch nails through them due to our dislike with them. Traditional pub means traditional ways of communication, talking face to face. An amazing collection of key rings can be found in the bar, which started back in 1953 with my great grandmother. We still find ourselves being handed key rings from eager customers & travellers. CAMRA a national institute for all things wonderful about beer and pubs listed us on The National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors which landed us a fantastic article in the telegraph, it later got published in The Great British Pubs Guide. 1973 saw our first listing in the now extensive Good Beer Guide and we have proudly been in every edition except the very first. The pub has seen seven generations of the same
for the mill next door is where the history of a building that has stood strong for 647 years begins. The Moor is historically know as being reclaimed land, where water came all the way up to where is now the Asha restaurant. Boats would ‘moor’ up to collect the produce or deliver to the mill and store. It would then be transported back up the creek to Penryn. The building has witnessed some monumental events through its vast history; environment changes, the world at war, Royal Charters, Royal Visits, births, deaths and marriages. The Seven Stars was granted its licence in 1660, a year before Falmouth was given its Royal Charter and the licensee at the time was one Henry Penial and his spouse Mary-Jane! It has seen many changes around Falmouth and has also encountered many characters, from salty old sea dogs to royalty. Many of the characters worked on the water or for the water, on working boats or down in the shipyard. All of them had fascinating stories to tell. Time has stood still in this much loved and respected establishment. It is a Grade II listed building its original layout out was a three storey building with a stable to the right hand side you can still see the original stable doors as you go into the gent’s loos. 1912 saw the stable taken down and an extension was added. The frontage adorned a beautiful ornate decorative display attached to the still existing balcony; it had a circular Amy’s Great Great Great Great Step display of 7 stars Grandfather with his family back in 1915 and the word hotel.
family as landlords and landlady’s, dating from 1873. Hugh Dunstan Richards started up the oyster bar where he would shuck and serve on the marble bar; you can still see this beautiful piece of marble. He also exported Falmouth oyster further up the line. I reinstated the oyster bar back in 2013 where we shucked and served just as my great-greatgreat-great step grandfather once done. The most famous being Rev John Barrington Bennetts my grandfather. He served as landlord for nearly 60 years
spent hours watching my grandfather, learning the trade how he poured the beer. I collected glasses, I helped make my grans legendry ham & cheese rolls and then it came the time I could serve and that was me well and truly hooked. Most people think running a pub is just having to smile and serve the drinks its sooo much more than that. The 90 hour weeks can be laborious but when I think back on all the history and how it has moved on with all the new events like the venue for the sea shanty festival and the

while also serving his congregation at the Parish Church, before his passing back in 2011. I remember as a little girl aged 4 peering through the bar hatch way seeing all the regulars in ‘Rogues’ corner laughing (not all mind) and always cheering when they saw me and shouting “alright maid” and “ere Barrington get the maid a pineapple juice”. All the stories they used to tell me I was intrigued! At 4 years old I knew I wanted to be behind the bar. The excitement that ran through me was incredible it still to this day does. Growing up in a family business as unique as this one always gives me a sense of pride. I
working boat do’s we have it just makes the long days and sleepless nights oh so worth it. Small businesses are a tough place to be in, the pub trade can be a worrying place to. With of 1 in 8 pubs closing each week to 1-4 expected to close at the end of 2016. The traditional spit and saw dust pubs are a dying breed, the world we live in now sees a growing majority of chain pubs who follow a strict décor and design protocol tradition soon slips away. I’m very proud to be part of this wonderful establishment and I’m very proud to be part of a unique family business set in my beautiful home town Falmouth!

The importance of tyres THE importance of tyres – they’re not just black and round. New research has found more than 10 million tyres used by British motorists could be past their safe lifespan. The study discovered that 59 per cent of those surveyed didn’t know their tyre displayed information about its age, with many being used after their recommended limit had been exceeded. In total only 17 per cent of UK motorists and car insurance policy holders could accurately assess how old their car’s tyres were. Roger Griggs, communications director at Kwik Fit, has spoken about the dangers of old tyres, saying: ‘We would recommend drivers consider changing a tyre that’s more than five years old, even if it’s not down to the legal tread limit. ‘At a glance it may well look like the tread is in top condition, but the structure of the tyre may have decayed over time – check for tell-tale signs of cracking on the sidewall. And we would remind drivers to include the spare, which sometimes lays forgotten
and unchecked. If drivers have a puncture, a perished spare will obviously be of no help at all.’ Wheel Alignment Xpress Garage and Tyre Centre, has been awarded ISO 9001 along with PAS43 certificates. Sarah
newton’s news
I hugely appreciate the increased support I received from my constituents in last month’s election.
It is a great honour and a privilege to represent the people of Falmouth & Penryn. I equally appreciate that those who voted for a different candidate or political party will be disappointed and some worried about what the future may hold.
I see this new Parliament as a real opportunity not only to deliver the specific pledges for Cornwall that I made to you, but to build a more secure and prosperous future for all the nations and all the people of the United Kingdom. Like many of you, I have been increasingly concerned by the rise of nationalism and extremism, the loud talk of what divides us rather than what unites us. It is ironic that, as we commemorate the achievements of our parents and grandparents in the Second World War, whose united sacrifice secured our freedom, that we are also facing a challenge to the United Kingdom as we know it. I believe it is vitally important to continue to protect and promote the Union. The need for some constitutional change to preserve that unity is now accepted and reform is necessary to ensure a fairer economic settlement for the different parts of the United Kingdom. My work as your local MP, taking up and trying to resolve individual problems of all my constituents, will continue to be my top priority and the foundation of everything I do. Working with the many 'can do' people here who are as determined as I am to ensure that everyone has the opportunity of building for themselves and for our community a brighter future. I see my work as continuing a long tradition of progressive Conservatives. Setting people free from the chains of persecution, poverty and prejudice are threads running through Conservative political history. From Pitt the Younger and William Wilberforce who led the campaign to abolish slavery, to Benjamin Disraeli who banned children from working in mines and sent them to school instead, to the first minority Prime Minister and first female Member of Parliament to take up her seat, to Winston Churchill who inspired the international community to create the European Convention on Human Rights and in the last Parliament, the Modern Day Slavery Act, One Nation Conservative politicians have long led progressive change for the benefit of everyone in society.

fun on the beach
When you’re heading to a beach, the RNLI urge you to respect the water and visit a lifeguarded beach. On a lifeguarded beach there are trained professionals to help keep you safe – they’ll be on hand if something goes wrong, in or out of the water. It’s easy to search for lifeguarded beaches with the free RNLI Beach Finder app, to make sure you and your family has a safe and fun trip.
Getting beach fit Before you get in the water it’s important to consider your personal fitness as the sea can be a very demanding environment. Swimming is one of the best year-round activities to help prepare your body so it’s recommend you get in the pool and start practicing now! Just be aware that sea swimming can be more challenging than the pool so before you start a watersport it’s worth jumping in between the red and yellow flags and familiarising yourself with the conditions. Understand the sea Understand rips Rips are strong currents running out to sea, which can quickly take you from the shallows out of your depth. Rips are especially powerful in larger surf, but are also found around river mouths, estuaries and man-made structures like piers and groynes. They can catch even the most experienced beachgoers out; so don’t be afraid to ask lifeguards for advice. They will show you how you can avoid rips, but if you do get caught in one: • Stay calm – don’t panic • If you can stand, wade don’t swim • Keep hold of your board or inflatable to help you float • Raise your hand and shout for help • Never try to swim directly against the rip or you’ll get exhausted • Swim parallel to the beach until free of the rip, then make for shore
If you see anyone else in trouble, alert the lifeguards or call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. Understand tides A beach can seem like a vast playground but the tide can come in surprisingly quickly. As the tide moves up and down the beach, the depth of water changes throughout the day, sometimes by as much as 10 metres. Many lifeboat and lifeguard rescues are of people getting cut off by the rising water. To prevent this happening to you, get local tidal information from the Harbour Master, the tourist information centre and some retail outlets. Inflatables and bodyboards Inflatables Blow-up toys and airbeds are designed for pools, not the sea where they can easily be swept out. If you do use them at the beach, then: • Ensure children are closely supervised • Keep near the shore • Only use between the red and yellow flags • Follow the lifeguard’s advice • Do not take out in big waves Never use them when orange windsock is flying, as this indicates offshore winds which will blow inflatables further out to sea. Bodyboards Bodyboarding is fun for all the family, but every year the lifeguards rescue thousands of people who get caught out. The most important advice is to always stay with your board, it will keep you above the water, even if you feel you are drifting out to sea. Your board will keep you afloat and make you much easier to spot if the lifeguards need to rescue you.

Missing children Children are safest when supervised. As soon as you get to the beach, agree a meeting point in case of separation. If the beach runs a children’s safety scheme, using wristbands or tickets, take part. They’re free and they work. If you are on an RNLI-lifeguarded beach, visit the lifeguard hut on arrival and they can give you special wristbands to put your contact details on. If a child does go missing: • Calmly check your surroundings first, ensuring other children remain supervised • Contact the lifeguards or police and keep them informed Let all searchers know once the child is found. Signs and flags When you arrive at the beach the first thing you might see is a sign giving you all the information about the beach you’re visiting. This includes important safety info on the hazards specific to the area. If the beach you’re at is not lifeguarded, please take extra care if you are going into the water. If lifeguards are on patrol, then you’ll need to know your flags: Red and white prohibition sign This is a prohibition sign – don’t do it! Red and yellow flags Lifeguarded area. Safest area to swim, bodyboard and use inflatables.
FALMOUTH
Black and white chequered flags For surfboards, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and other nonpowered craft. Launch and recovery area for kite surfers and windsurfers. Never swim or bodyboard here. Red flag Danger! Never go in the water under any circumstances when the red flag is flying. Orange windsock Indicates offshore or strong wind conditions. Never use inflatables when the windsock is flying.
