THE SUMMER ITCH!

It is routine in our practice to see a great many dogs which, for no obvious reason, start scratching in early summer, carry on doing it throughout, and then sort themselves out in the autumn. These cases are generally dogs with ‘atopic’ skin disease, the prime cause of which is some kind of environmental agent, like grass or tree pollen, which is of course far more of a problem in high summer than it is the rest of the year.

Progress of ‘The Itch’

While dogs can be perfectly happy in themselves, and show no signs of a respiratory problem, like people with hayfever, some affected animals can slowly but surely start to scratch – typically around the face, backs of the fore-legs, the fronts of the hind-legs, then the flanks, and finally, just about everywhere!

from them industriously nibbling at themselves, will start to heal of their own accord. Steroids are often used to do this – in a short, sharp, shock kind of rationale given by injection, which must give a blissful release to the itchy dog! – and then often treatment is continued with a course of tablets, which in many cases are more steroids. But we now have a new drug called Apoquel which is purpose-designed to relieve the scratching and appears to be well tolerated, so now your vet has a greater choice of treatments than before.

What else can be done?

Fleas, naturally, are one of the first things to eliminate as a cause of the scratching – and remember, a single flea can lay well over 1000 eggs, which is why they are persistent little critturs – but your vet will be able to rule these in or out, and may well diagnose an atopic dermatitis. First of all it’s important to break the “itch-scratch” cycle, so that if you stop the dog itching, they will stop scratching, and the sore patches of skin which have resulted

One of the best things you can do to help is frequent bathing / shampooing of your dog. This helps to remove the pollen granules, which can prevent the whole sensitization process from starting in the first place. Shampooing also helps to reduce the numbers of bacteria which colonise the dog’s skin, and which can obviously make the dog’s reddened and very inflamed skin much worse. Since frequent bathing can be helpful in most dogs you need to choose a shampoo that is mild without

ingredients that may cause drying of the skin or the coat, so a specific hypoallergenic shampoo can help "put the fire out." If you’re not sure, do go and seek advice from your vet, as they will be able to advise on the best shampoo for a particular situation. • Walking your dog in the early morning / late evening, when it’s generally cooler and not so dry as in the middle of the day, can also help reduce exposure to pollens. • Wiping off the feet, the belly, the insides of the ear flaps, and the nonhaired areas of the dog generally, so in the groin and the ‘armpits’, when dogs come in from outside will reduce the pollen load. Just use a damp cloth or antibacterial wipes. In severe cases clothing such as cotton T-shirts and even onesies can act as a physical barrier to contact of the pollen granules with the skin, apart from being a great fashion statement of course! • Some nutritional supplements also help, particularly the “essential fatty acids”, many of which are incorporated into some foods specifically produced with atopic dogs in mind. While these hints may not be quite sufficient to stop a flare-up of a skin condition in a very sensitive animal, at the very least they’ll help to bring a bit of relief to your itchy scratchy dog!

TRAVEL SICKNESS

It’s one of the great joys of dog ownership in taking them to new places where they can run and let off steam to their hearts’ content. You and they get some fresh air and exercise, your dog enjoys a great walk with splendid new smells, and everyone goes home happy. It’s particularly tough therefore if your dog is regularly travelsick – so what can you do? • Keep the windows slightly open so that your dog can get some fresh air during the journey. • Drive carefully and avoid any unnecessary braking or acceleration. • Make sure that it is not too warm or too cold in your car. • Take regular breaks so that your dog can walk around outside of the car and drink some water. • Avoid stress during your journey as much as possible.Your dog will remember positive experiences for a long time and will be excited to come along on future journeys! • Proper medication to prevent the symptoms. An excellent new medicine for the prevention of travel sickness in dogs is ‘Cerenia’. This has been specially developed for dogs, and rather than acting just by doping them up, it works directly on the vomiting centre within the brain. It’s reliable and long-lasting, and it means that you and your dog can travel and enjoy your trips out – and longer ones like holidays! – together. Again, ask your vet for advice, but if it means you can spend more time with your pet, what’s not to like!

F1 2015 – PS4, XB1

GAMES REVIEW

Suggestions by Stan and written by Kristian Greet

Codemasters latest instalment in the F1 franchise finally makes its way to the current gen consoles. This game feels like a back to basics of the game with many of its features stripped down and retooled to other modes. Gone are the classic cars and career modes, instead of creating your own driver and taking him from one of the back marker teams to a world champion team. You now can pick any driver from any team and start from there, so if you want to take a Marussia or Lotus team to the top or start at Ferrari or Mercedes, the option is there. The handling takes a while to get used to but it’s all part of the learning curve with this game. The graphics are decent enough but are out a little outdated in some places. The addition of being able to get feedback from your race engineer is pretty cool. This is certainly a good launching point for future games on current gen, the only main complaint is lack of features but it is something that certainly can be addressed. Excitement meter 7/10

God Of War 3: Remastered Edition – PS4

One of the best games on the PS3 graphically and gameplay wise is remastered completely for the Playstation 4. The original game was stunning on the PS3 originally so taking advantage of the PS4’s graphic capability is a smart move by Sony but whether there will be any tweaks to the game mechanics remains to be seen. It doesn’t really need it though fans of the series will be essentially be playing the same game they played five years ago. Little is offered in terms of extra content but again when a game is this good, it’s not really needed. New players will certainly enjoy this game, it gives a great recap of previous games and it’s very quick to pick up the controls. The combat and puzzle solving aspects of the game certainly give this game an extra dimension. Overall this is great game and smart choice to bring to the PS4. Excitement meter: 9/10 Also this month Sony has launched a new version of the PS4, adding in a lot more storage and a new slimmed down chassis. The new system’s hard drive is now 1TB which is twice as much as before and the chassis of the 500GB model has been slimmed down by 10% lighter and 8% more power efficient. The price of the machine will be £350, So come on down and get one while stocks last!

Love from Me has been trading now

for one whole year!! We had our first birthday last month and are extremely happy how the first year has gone. It has come with challenges but most of the time it has been a smooth ride. Meeting new people and making friends along the way has made the past year and absolute joy!

We have just been nominated for 'Stars' Underline Magazines Best Shop Awards in the 'Best Newcomer' category in the UK and Ireland. We are absolutely thrilled with this! It would be fantastic to be shortlisted and attend the red carpet

ceremony in London- as they class this as the 'Oscars' of the Retail Industry! We would like to thank all of my customers - because without them I wouldn't be here. Love from Me x

Sarah

newton’s news

What does the Summer Budget mean for people in Falmouth & Penryn?

When the Government was formed in 2010 we inherited a low wage, high tax, high welfare economy. The UK has 1% of the world’s population, it generates 4% of the world’s income but it is responsible for 7% of the world’s welfare spending. As Conservatives, we want to move to a country where people are paid more, the Government takes less of their money and we therefore have to spend less on welfare. Much of the welfare budget goes to the elderly and the disabled. The Chancellor made it clear in the Summer Budget that he won’t be cutting that. The state pension will continue to be increased in line with prices, wages or 2.5% whichever is higher, other pensioner benefits will be protected and he will not be cutting, taxing or means testing disability benefits. But some of the welfare budget goes to people who are unemployed and some of it goes to people who are in work but relatively lowly paid and therefore need help in the form of housing benefit and/or tax credits. In 1980, working age welfare accounted for 8% of government spending; today it accounts for 13%. It is this that we want to reduce. Rather than take money from people in tax and then give it back in tax credits, the simplest way to help working people is to let them keep more of the money they work hard to earn. At the Election, we promised to increase the personal allowance the amount of money you can earn before you start paying income tax to £12,500 and the threshold at which people start paying the 40p rate to £50,000. The Chancellor made a start on delivering both of those promises, raising the personal allowance to £11,000 and the 40p threshold to £43,000. As a result, 29 million people will pay less in income tax. Tax credits are subsidising lower wages in a way that was never intended. Employers can get away with paying their staff less than they need to live on because they know the Government will top those salaries up. That can’t be right. People who work hard in low paid jobs deserve a pay rise and that’s

what they’re going to get. The Chancellor announced that he is introducing a new compulsory National Living Wage for everyone aged 25 and over. It will start next April at £7.20 an hour - a significant increase on the current minimum wage - and it will increase to £9 an hour by 2020. I’m absolutely delighted by this announcement. It’s something I have long campaigned for as too many people in Falmouth and Penryn have low paid employment. Two and a half million people will benefit with those on the minimum wage seeing their pay rise by a third or over £5,000 a year over this Parliament. And to ensure businesses can afford to pay low-paid staff more, the Chancellor is cutting corporation tax to 19% in 2017 and to 18% by 2020. This won’t only help existing business in the UK, it sends out a message around the world that this country is a great place to base your business. He’s also increasing the Employment Allowance - which reduces the National Insurance Contributions businesses have to pay - to £3,000 in 2016. This Budget tells you two important things about today’s Conservative Party. First, we mean to keep the promises we made - to take the tough decisions necessary to get Britain back in the black, to tackle tax avoidance, to cut income tax for millions of people, to create 3 million new apprenticeships, to give our precious NHS the funds it needs and to take the family home out of inheritance tax. But second and equally importantly, we will deal with the deficit in a way that is fair with those with the broadest shoulders bearing the greatest burden. The richest are paying a greater share of tax than they were in 2010. And as a result of this Budget, someone in low paid work will get paid more and pay less tax - and be confident that they will be better off than someone who chooses not to work.

We are as always busy on the nursery. Watering seems to be our version of painting the Forth Bridge, never ending!! A necessary chore of course and it gives us the chance to, at least once a day, look at every plant to make sure they are at their best. At least at this time of year we can enjoy the fruits of our labours and sit in the garden, relax and admire the results of our hard work, whilst planning the next big project!!!

Diary for August

• Camellias, Rhododendrons and Azaleas must be kept well-watered at this time of year to ensure that next year’s buds develop • Keep all pots, containers and baskets wellwatered and feed them. A liquid feed once a fortnight should be sufficient • Keep dead heading bedding and perennial plants. It can be a bit of a chore but it does encourage more flowers • Trim Lavender plants once they have finished flowering. This will help to keep them compact • Cut back Herbs to encourage a fresh growth of young leaves • Prune summer flowering shrubs once they have finished flowering • Dead head Roses to encourage more flowers • Keep on top of the watering on the veggie plot • Tomato food is a wonderful thing. Because it is high in potash it is good for many plants other than Tomatoes (Sweet corn, Peppers, Cucumbers, Chilli’s and Roses to name a few) • Continue to feed Tomato plants.Trim off those lower leaves and pinch out the top of the plants when there are 5-6 trusses of fruit • Pinch out the growing tips of Runner Beans to

encourage more side shoots and therefore more beans. Once they start producing beans they are best harvested regularly to prevent the beans going tough and stringy • Check for Cabbage White butterfly eggs under the Cabbage leaves. If you find any squash them with your fingers • Clear away any diseased or old foliage laying around • Keep on top of the weeding they compete with your plants for food, water and light • If you have fruit trees or bushes in containers, give them a high potash feed (Tomato food) to keep them healthy and productive • Plant out Strawberry plant rooted runners ready for next years harvest • Keep an eye on the fruit trees such as Plums, Cherries and Apricots. There fruits should be ready this month. • Clean up around Strawberry plants. Get rid of any old straw from around the plants and trim them back to increase ventilation around them. This will help to prevent disease • Prune Blackcurrant bushes after harvesting • Watch your greenhouse. Good ventilation and watering are vital • Give hedges a final trim before they stop growing

Strawberry and Peanut Crunch Pie

Ingredients for the base

60g butter, melted, plus extra for greasing 15 digestive biscuits 85g crunchy peanut butter

For the filling

200g crème fraîche 200g full-fat cream cheese 25g icing sugar, sifted ½ tsp vanilla paste, or seeds from ½ vanilla pod

For the sauce and topping

450g ripe strawberries (smaller sized ones are best) 2 tbsp icing sugar, plus extra for dusting peanut brittle bar, crushed

Method

1. Generously grease a 20cm round sandwich tin and line the base with parchment. Finely crush the biscuits, either in a processor or by putting them into a food bag, squeezing out the air, then bashing with a rolling pin. 2. Work the butter and peanut butter into the biscuits until the mix looks like wet sand. Using the

back of a cutlery spoon, press the mix evenly over the base and up the sides of the tin. Once even, go over the crumbs again, pressing and firming to a smooth crust. Chill in the freezer for 30 mins. 3. Beat the filling ingredients together with electric hand beaters until thick. Spoon carefully into the biscuit case, then top with about 25 strawberries. Chill for at least 2

hrs. For the sauce, use a hand blender or processor to purée 200g strawberries with the icing sugar until smooth. 4.When ready to serve, carefully push the very cold pie up out of the tin (standing it on something like an upturned mug will help). Sprinkle over the peanut brittle and extra icing sugar. Serve with the sauce.
