is a beautiful place btuhere! nothing ever grows I SHARE an office with a colleague who spends a lot of time on the phone to the elderly population and always explains our business name as “The Core, like the core of an apple”. Seeing the leaves start to change colour on the trees outside our window it got me thinking of the Harvest festivals I used to attend as a child through school. The celebration of the fruits of much labour in the fields and the wonderful colours and smells of the array of rosy apples and freshly baked Harvest loaves was wonderful. We chose the name The Core as it symbolizes so much of who we are, what we do and what we want to achieve. Let me explain. Think about what happens with the apples once the festival is over? Most will be eaten providing nutrition, taste and energy and at the heart of the apple lays the core from which it has developed and grown. As a Health and Fitness centre specializing in whole wellbeing, we aim to be the Core for you, helping you to develop and grow. Our fabulous Health Café Cwtch provides you with the tasty nutrition your body needs, from Green Power Smoothies to Beetroot brownies, Dippy eggs and Chicken and Mango Salads. Little point putting in the effort to exercise if you’re going to go straight from the Gym to a Fast Food outlet. The body’s cells renew themselves and need the nutrition you put in in order to do this so literally “You are what you eat!” Apples, like people, come in all shapes and sizes and you will not find one exactly the same as

another (I’m not getting into the GMO or cloning argument here, that’s for another day!) Different

varieties will grow at different rates, some will bear fruit, and some will flower. As with the warnings on all Home Hair dye products, Results will vary! Speaking to our members, one thing they all have in common is the same initial fear about walking through the door for the first time. As a wise man (George Addair) once said, “Everything you want is on the other side of fear”. If the Customer feedback forms for our Shortlisting for Best Customer Service in The National Fitness Awards (NFA) 2014 are anything to go by, they are all glad they went through that door. Our new ground floor premises on The Moor which opens into our Cwtch Café makes taking that first step so much easier as you can sit and have a coffee and a healthy snack and see what our vibe is about before you talk to us about starting your fitness journey. Just as an apple tree forms part of life’s rich tapestry, with roots to stabilize, branches to grow, flowers to blossom and fruit to bear, it is an essential part of an ecosystem. We, The Core, act as a critical part of the ecosystem in the heart of Falmouth and the Cornish community. Our roots provide stability and support for our Members who say we ”offer sociability, support and laughter and the staff take great pride in nurturing us as clients” (K Youngman). Reaching beyond our Core building on The Moor, we run classes in the Community for clients with issues with Balance and Stability and also for those with Long term Health Conditions. One of our fabulous members Judith Green, living with Parkinsons, who came to us in the Community as she couldn’t walk without crutches, has been shortlisted in the NFA in the Member Achievement Category above

hundreds of other nominated people nationwide, as she now attends regular classes such as Pilates and Zumba! Our shortlisting for the second year running as Best Rehab Facility in the UK highlights our passion for health and our aim to normalize fitness. We specialize in Rehab for Long Term Conditions and run Cancer Rehab, Pilates Rehab and are starting Workshops in Dance for Parkinsons clients. We train clients with Multiple Sclerosis who have blossomed from having to drive to a neighbours house 2 doors away to now having the strength to complete 60-minute Personal training sessions in the Gym! We have COPD Members who exercise with us 6 days a week in energetic classes such as Body Combat and Pump Fx, Stroke clients who personal train and we rehab Brain Injury clients to name but a few. We look forward to celebrating the success of our Member Achievements and the fruits of our labours including Best Regional Gym South at the Awards ceremony at the end of November (our Harvest in a Fitness Community sense) however, we celebrate each day with the Members who regard the Core as “so much more than a fitness club”…where “everyone who walks through the door is made to feel welcome and part of the Core family”. So, are you ready to add a new branch to your Family tree? We’re here to help you on your way. Come in for a “Catch” (Welsh word meaning hug and safe place) and see how we can support you on your way. From Bootcamp to Baby and Mum classes, from Pilates to Pump, from RIG to Relaxation, whatever you need, we are here for you. Call The Core on 01326 310760, go to www.thecore.uk.net or mail us on info@thecore.uk.net. Do it now, start growing.

YOU may ask how it is possible to make that traditional old British favourite, the sausage, so different from one place to another. Well, add a touch of quality service, product pride, local flavourings and vibrant surroundings and you have your answer and not just that, it can be experienced locally at the newly opened Bangers with a Twist. They don’t just stop at sausages, they offer a wide range of Gourmet Hotdogs, Handcrafted (and they are truly crafted) Burgers, Slow Cooked Pulled Pork and a selection of lite bites and salads. Their range of handmade sausages includes the many variety sharing platter or, ‘The Goodfella’, a sumptuous Italian style lamb sausage and ‘The Snoopy Dog’, a vegetarian delight. Burgers include, ‘The Gringo Burger’ with chilli con carne, nachos and jalapeños and for those with a big appetite, the Big Kahuna Burger, which has 2 huge 7oz all beef patties, bacon, fried egg, cheese and pickle!!! A more extensive list can be found on their menu, along with suggestions for a number of different toppings. Unlike many places, Bangers with a Twist is fully licensed and sticking to its local produce mantra, offers a range of local beers, wine, Cornish ciders, lagers, ginger beer and a range of Cornish Orchard soft drinks and let’s not forget the traditional cup of tea or coffee. 3. When choosing colours, consider how much natural daylight the room gets as this will have an impact on which tone would suit your room best… Pale wood planks, beige carpets and light coloured stone tiles bring a fresh, spacious feel to living spaces and can help brighten up the darker areas of your home, while blonde (oak, pine, birch ash, maple effect) wood planks match neutral color schemes and add warmth. If you want to add rich depth and luxury to your home, darker wood tones (eg. walnut and mahogany) will help you create a more traditional and opulent effect.

5. In terms of comfort, nothing compares to the soft, luxurious feeling of carpet under your feet. However, don't be tempted to skimp on carpet underlay to save a few pounds. Carpet underlay gives you extra cushioning and comfort, conceals subfloor imperfections to improve the appearance of the carpet and acts as room insulation – plus it absorbs sound to eliminate neighbour noise.

choice that is required. Anything from printing a CV or dissertation – either from a USB stick or an emailed file – through to binding and supplying files, folders, and art products. They are also able to split packs so that individual items can be purchased instead of the expensive multipacks that many larger outlets offer. Pam and Dave take great pride in supplying and delivering to local businesses with a wide range of stationery and office equipment, and rising to the many challenges that involves. They are happy to discuss any creative requirements and enjoy collaborating with the customer to produce menus, flyers, letterheads, and invoices etc that reflect the right image at affordable prices. The personal touch is at the heart of their approach and is reflected in the new layout of the shop, with a more open and accessible appearance, and in the friendly, helpful staff, Caroline and Linda, who will go out of their way to find what you need. Since moving here, Pam and Dave have fallen in love with Falmouth and how welcome they have been made to feel. Pam recalls going out for a meal in a local restaurant and realising that she had produced the menus. It made her feel part of the town and proud to be part of the busy and thriving culture of Falmouth. Dave’s proudest moment was when a customer recognised him and called him Mr Octopus! Fit N Fun Kids are already celebrating the start of the new term by being recognised nationally for their high quality childcare provisions throughout the county and are also celebrating some new members to the team. It was great to catch up with Rachel Jones again to find out what’s been happening down at Falmouth’s favourite childcare provider.

“We are really excited to be attending the National Nursery World Awards for the fifth year running, having this year being shortlisted for the Nursery Chain of the Year Award, Supporting Parents Award (recognition for their work with Young Mums Will Achieve in particular) and for a Community Award for their charity work, their work for Leading Women UK supporting women in business and the Enterprise Foundation, supporting young people with enterprise and employability.” Rachel Jones CEO .

This term they have three new apprentices, a new full time Early Years Teacher for their PreSchool, a new Chef and a Volunteer Parent Liaison! Apprentices, Sam and Henrietta ,are working in Falmouth with their qualified staff. Amy Jones is busy working on her own concept ‘Stay Strong’ an anti-bullying organiation which is fully supported by Fit N Fun Kids. Schools and groups can now book Amy to visit them.

Early Years Teacher Sarah will be enhancing their child learning, particularly focusing on early child development with their younger children and numeracy and literacy with their pre-school children. With greater focus being placed on healthy eating and nutrition, I was keen to learn about new developments in this area “Mark, our new Chef, has already enhanced our children's

received outstanding feedback following our recent Nippers Nutrition assessment, taking us to the highest level. Mark, a qualified Chef, sources fresh local produce daily and cooks all the children's meals fresh in the morning to ensure they are getting the best nutritional diet throughout their day with us. Feedback from parents, children and staff has been amazing!

We are delighted to have one of our parents, Bridget, join us as a Volunteer Parent Liaison. Bridget will be working closely with the Senior Management Team and will primarily focus on our new Parent Carer Networks which will take place monthly; supporting our families; helping with our charity work and community events. We feel very lucky to have Bridget supporting us and she is already making a positive impact!

ddheavily on reflective practice to ensure we are supporting each child's individual needs. Having a new team join us as well as seeing some of our longest serving members of the team promoted to more senior positions can only help us towards achieving another great year".

This term they are very busy with their younger children but are pleased to announce that they currently have spaces available for FREE childcare in the 2, 3 and 4 year old rooms. Pre-school is open all year round but parents only wishing to access their fifteen hours funded childcare can also attend term time only. It is the same for those families who are eligible for 2 year old funding, again children can attend term time only but they also offer

Our Room Managers have also been busy studying Level 4 Leadership & Management with Cornwall College, again to improve their skills in developing themselves and their team.”

It's so easy to be caught up in the excitement and enthusiasm radiating from Rachel as she reflects on the amazing start of the new term, "Well, what a start, but I am not surprised, we have an outstanding team here at Fit N Fun Kids, all of whom are really passionate about giving children in Cornwall the best start in life. For us it is all about what is it like for a child here? We focus

Anyone who says there is no such thing as a bad day just hasn’t had one.

Mad Men – The Final Season Part 1

Mad Men is about people who work in Manhattan advertising in the 1960s. The show uses the broad metaphor of selling lies to the public as a statement about how everyone lives. Though the narrative features several men and women at the fictional Sterling Cooper agency, the story focuses most frequently on Don Draper. Don left his troubled past behind by stealing someone else's identity, which makes him the perfect person to tell others what they want to hear. He is often cruel and dishonest toward the people he is supposed to care about the most. For a while these traits help him succeed, but by the end of the fifth season, his habits have started to catch up to him. The series uses real historical events to illustrate what the characters are experiencing.

Amy Jones... her story continues

Seventeen year old UK Antibullying Ambassador, Amy Jones of Falmouth, has recently been awarded the Inspiring Young Person Award at the Cornwall Inspiring Human Potential Awards held earlier in September.

We last spoke to Amy just under two years ago, when at the age of fifteen she posted a video of her story on the internet that went viral. What happened next was the start of Amy's campaign to help others suffering from bullying whilst at the same time helping to change the mindsets of those who choose to bully. Amy told us that she was shocked by the statistics of those impacted by bullying, in particular young people aged between 11 and 17 years of age.

In 2011/2012 an astonishing 31,599 children called Childline because of bullying; 46% of children say they have been bullied at school at some stage of their lives; 38% of children have suffered from cyber bullying; 28% of children chose not to tell anyone that they are suffering from bullying.

Amy slowed down her work for a while whilst she sat her GCSEs and as soon as they were finished, the real work started she told us, "having suffered from bullying myself when I was younger, I not only had to change schools but actually re-take the year group again which meant I was a year late in finishing my education, however I was delighted to achieve 11 GCSE passes! As soon

as I finished my last exam I started my Apprenticeship with Fit N Fun Kids, studying Business Administration and Events Management whilst working on the next steps for Stay Strong, however, within 8 weeks, I have had to go full time on the Stay Strong initiative, having been booked for 14 Schools/Groups in October alone.”

Amy went on to say “I am really excited to be in a position now to go into Schools and Groups to start the real work. Bullying affects lives not only whilst we are young, but from those I have interviewed it has stayed with them way into their careers. A high proportion of these people are not in employment, education or training and this has been due to experiencing bullying at a young age

I have been very fortunate to be supported by celebrities such as Tom Daley, Michelle Mone, Gareth Gates as well as the local business community and Cornwall College. Stay Strong is a not for profit organisation and we rely on sponsorship to enable us to deliver the anti-bullying message. I am currently recruiting a volunteer network of young people to help me deliver in schools, colleges, groups and networks. Anti-bullying week takes place from November 17th and I am currently working on several events for that week, as well as touring Schools across Cornwall. Anyone wishing me to visit them can email amy@staystrong.co.uk” Anyone wanting to support Stay Strong can contact Amy on the above email or if you wish to keep up to date of her activities, you can follow her on Twitter StayStrongUK, Facebook Stay Strong and via her website

THINGS THAT JUMP OR MAKE YOU JUMP…. FLEAS AND FIREWORKS!

FLEAS – we’ve all seen them (and I’ve probably seen more than most of you!) on cats, dogs, rabbits and hedgehogs… and this year has been a particularly bad year for them. They’ve really been jumping – and when you

look at the size of the legs on the flea pictured above, you can see why they’re so mobile. Why it’s been so bad is difficult to say, yet we had a comparatively warm winter with only a very few frosts, a nice early spring, and then a hottish summer which has gone on and on – well for Cornwall anyway. So, the environmental conditions for fleas have been just ab fab. But, more to the point, when you consider that a single flea lays around 1200-1300 eggs, most of which mature in your home, going from egg to larva to young flea, you can appreciate that the increase in fleas during the summer is always a given. Just 5 fleas lay 6000 eggs

therefore … do the math! More than that though, fleas get more numerous as the year goes on, so with the current Indian summer than we’re enjoying (as I write this) you will appreciate that the risk of flea infestations of your pet are not going to die away but instead are only going to get worse. What to do about it therefore? First of all, you need to realize there is a problem and treat it aggressively. Fleas are like head lice on children: they’re great survivors. Second: treat your home. Vacuum everywhere your pet(s) go and then some, and then either fumigate with a smoke bomb or just run riot in your home squirting an aerosol spray around the place – a spray like Acclaim, RIP Flea, or Indorex. Our nurses will guide you here. Thirdly: treat your pets. All of them. Don’t ignore your cat(s) just because it’s the dog who is scratching, Cat fleas are the predominant type of flea now, and they live happily on cats and dogs, and will even take a bite out of you, though they won’t come back for more. The best treatments are those which not only kill fleas on your pet but also make sure that the eggs they lay are killed. That means that eggs don’t hatch into adult fleas, so even if one flea does manage to churn out its 1200 or so eggs, none make it to the jumping and feeding stage. The treatments I recommend in particular are

‘Advocate’ and ‘Stronghold’, both of which are ‘spot-on’ preparations, put on the back of your pet’s neck. Lastly: DON’T SLACK OFF!! Keep going with the treatments on your cats / dogs through the autumn and winter, otherwise you’ll get a few eggs surviving in your home, which will hatch, and the young fleas will jump onto your pet for a feed ... and so the problem begins all over again. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED…..KEEP TREATING AGAINST FLEAS!

FIREWORKS If your dog has an aversion to fireworks, then don’t leave it until November 4th to do something about it, but start acting NOW! Using DVDs with sounds of fireworks on them, played all the time, quietly at first and then slowly increasing to full volume, gets your dog adjusted to the

sounds – but of course this takes time! And you can also use a variety of pheromone compounds. What are pheromones? These are ‘smelly hormones’ released by dogs and cats when they’re happy, but also when they’re stressed. (Only they can smell them, not us, thankfully.) The good news is that we can artificially release “happy hormones” into the dog’s environment, so they feel blissfully chilled, and don’t get uptight with the sounds of fireworks going off whenever! This is done via a ‘DAP’ collar impregnated with the pheromone, or via ‘plug-in’ adapters – but again, they need time to work. Don’t hesitate to discuss potential firework problems with one of our veterinary nurses: they’ll be very pleased to advise you. But DO IT NOW, not on the afternoon of a Bonfire Night Party!
